Advice for a laptop - Off-topic

Hey guys! So I'm trying to look for a good laptop, but I'm on a tight budget right now. I just want to get the best laptop out of my money which is $700. I'm not really expert when it comes to buying computers.
I prefer 14" screen because I'm going to bring it everyday to school, so portability is really important. I might do a little gaming on it but I'm going to use it mostly for programming.
Here is an HP laptop that I've seen with good reviews. It has an I5 processor which I believe is good, and it also has 6GB of ram. But what about the graphics?
http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-d...ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1319610557&sr=1-1
This one is from Samsung's website, it's a little more expensive.
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/laptops/NP300V4A-A02US
Any other suggestions?

Noooo! Not the pavilon! Dx They NEVER agree with Linux. Or at least my friend's laptop did.
With $700 you could get an awfully decent laptop. I suggest searching new egg for some good deals.
Edit: That Samsung is kinda sexy...I would read into it and see what people think. Also, I have a gateway and it works fine for all my computer related coding needs! And school stuff!

No hp laptops!!!!!
i do like there laptops but recently they are stop supporting them... i personally not sure about a samsung... i would go with a dell...

Ok I'll remove HP from my options. I'll look at dell laptops right now.

This one I think is the best I can get but it's almost $800 if I want it to be intel I5.

The best place to check would definitely be newegg, they have such a huge selection and you can narrow it down to exactly what you want then find the best prices and read the reviews.

Do you think choosing i5 over i3 will be worth the money? I might not play games anyway.

he asked for a laptop that can handle everything, not a UMPC that can't even do programming and gaming.
Still, your choice is tempting. I might even buy one for my brother

Best Buy has HP's and Asus laptops for about $700 that will meet your needs.
You just have to catch them on sale. Check the Sunday flyer's often.

Whatever you do, get an HP laptop. They are the best. My extensive experience has shown that. I've had more trouble with Acer, Toshiba and others than I ever had with HP laptops. Right now I'm up to my 3rd HP laptop. My first one was a WinXP, which still is usable but need a new power socket. Number 2 is a Vista, which I am writing this on and number 3 is my newest Win7, which I reserve for coffee and breakfast in the morning at the table.

Looking for a new laptop...Suggestions?

Well, the MacBook Pro is on eBay, and I'm in need of a replacement. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I'm just done with Apple.
Anywho, I'm in the market for a reliable, fast, and new computer (PC, no mac )
The minimum specs I'm looking for:
* Intel i5 or i7
* At LEAST 4 gigs of RAM
* Less than 2 inches thick
* At least a 15" screen
I'm also open to suggestions, so let me know.
Do you guys have any personal preferences/experiences? Best place to buy?
Sony Vaio (of some kind) or..
Alienware Laptop?
Or Dell?
Iam a dell fan even though i haven't bought any of their equipment.
Try this: http://laptoplogic.com/laptop-finder/advanced
Any price range?
by the MacBook pro I'm guessing 800 1000 is close?
I bought a Msi a6200 at electronic express for $549 on no tax weekend here. Core i5 430m, 4gb ddr3, 500 gb hdd, Bluetooth, wireless n card, and HDMI out. I'm loving it. Asus laptops are also nice.

Thanks for the link flyboy.
My family has had some bad experiences with dell in the past. I used to love their commercials though lol. "DUDE, you're gettin' a DELL!"
Alienware is definitely one of my prospects...Haven't really seen any that I would consider "thin"...But I'm used to the mac of course lol.
@Max I was just thinking that I should have posted a price range. Anything from $800- ~$1100 (US)

Not necessarily "thin", just something thinner than two inches that I can lug around school without breaking my back, or backpack.

Yep. I don't think an alienware is really worth it unless it's a desktop anyways. Some of em look really sick though.

You cant disagree that this one looks lush (The gold one) but shame it's only got an 11" screen

My old Sony laptop was more better built than my new one, so I mean the new vaio seem not as solid as before ones.

Gaming Comp

Im looking to buy a new gaming computer because my mac is really not built for it. It runs some games pretty well under windows but not as good as i would like. i have a quote for 1000$ for it atm (2.54Ghz MBP 2009 model) and i have 600$ of extra cash im willing to put into a new computer.
my basic question: What is the best gaming computer i can get in the price range of 1400-1600$?

In all seriousness, you are better off building your own because it will be cheaper. If you go that route, the only things that will be expensive are the CPU, GPU and motherboard.
Now if you don't know what processor to go with, I suggest you check out Intel's 2600K. It is Intel's new Sandy Bridge processor and it is FRICKING awesome for its price. Easily overclockable up to 4Ghz on air.

1600$ Max? I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Alienware's m11x and m15x are solid laptops with a good price. You can also check out HP also or Dells XPS series which are pretty noteworthy.
Take a look at asus laptops. They have the best price for what you get.

wow....no
i definetly am looking at Asus and Alienware atm.
do you guys have any specific models that i should take a look at? maybe a config that has worked well?
Just go for Alienware if you 100 % wants gaming laptop
If you only wants a gaming laptop then go after processor and Graphics card because RAM And hard drive you can upgrade that later , You need solid Nvidia GTX Series for good gaming
I know Lenovo's aren't technicaly gaming PC's but they have some great specs for the price there
I'm in the Alienware camp as well. My brother has one and he can multi-box WoW (5 account bot team lol) with no lag whatsoever.
But it runs any game he wants to on it with no lag and its pretty slick looking.
ive heard alienwares are a bit overpriced for what they are worth, however i like the power they put into those computers. I will definetly check that out. also, should i go for a custom built comp or just one pre-configed?
Well you cant cave in so you'll have to get atm a good solid computer thatll last you the next 10 years

[Q] Really urgent and help needed from you guys :D

My cousin is over in the USA, where electronics are cheap and the women are cheaper (if not free), and he's getting some gear for me. Question now is, should I buy the Nook tablet or the Transformer pad? Also, I'm pretty much planning on spending like USD250, so any other suggestions are welcome.
Also, this is purely a new toy, and he has back problems, so don't suggest something heavy.
Go for the transformer Especially since it's going on sale black Friday!

It makes a lot of since to have have both apple or both android. You can use your purchased apps on both devices from the same company. But you can't use your ios apps on your android and your android apps on ios. You would have to buy them all over again.
That display is really something to behold. Never seen anything like it before. Would I buy one? Nope. Would I buy an Android tablet? Nope. I have 0 use for both of them at this point.

The retina-ish display was too tempting
And I kinda wish it was an android tab but the display was cool

not sure if there is a jailbreak for the new ipad but i know you can make it look like an android tablet.
There's a nice little video about how "awesome" the new ipad is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YWWQ_Hfk68
(ps, if you respond with pointing out how that video is "wrong for this and that and the other thing, and btw what about this"....
You've been trolled.)

Nothing wrong with that, looks like a decent machine. I am waiting out for a decent and decently priced quad core Android tablet. Sticking with one library of apps rather than investing in two. But some of the serious apps I wish to have on android might be awhile.

Better choice, as long as it was a PC.

Have fun with the rest of the sheep.
And why is that high of screen resolution needed on a 10" screen?
Just like the rest of the iDrones, ooh look it is shiny, look at the pretty colors and lights, and I only have to sign my bank account, soul, and first born child over to crapple? Sign me up! Morons!
Give crapple 500+ dollars,
Get higher screen res than is actually needed,
Tablet overheats and shuts down,
Firmware fix will just slow down CPU reducing performance,
Pay crapple hundreds more dollars for apps that aren't actually worth it,
PRICELESS!

lol
I have five of these selling on Ebay right now. They are going for 700 each. I tried for one hour and I was done with it and android has so much more to do than ios 5.1.
I like super amoled better than retina display.

I'm holding out for the new transformer prime/infinity 700 series. Hopefully it is released in the next month or so.

I unfortunately can't justify buying a tab. I want one. I bought my girlfriend the Nook Tablet and her roommate uses it more than she does. I think I'm gonna take it and put CM7 on it.

Show Us Your Rig....

On a forum I used to frequent back in my tech support days we had a thread called "Show us yer Rig"......

An aging P4 3.2Ghz, Asus motherboard, XFX 9500GT, couple Tb drives, Win7 & Ubuntu 12.04 (Pangolin AFAIK) dual boot.
Plus, when I'm at home my A500 has a home on the desk as an aWARemote tool for Winamp etc...
Dont mind the mess, its the only place in the house I'm 'allowed' to be messy (damn these wifey characters!).

You're more showing pics of your desk rather than your PC
So here:

Thanks! That's Octocore! I can run Minecraft on full settings and explode things in-game without any lag

Yes there is, but I tried and failed. I can't find it. If anyone finds it then a link here would be great, but until then it's a valid thread.
And to stay on-topic (which pains me to do so), you REALLY don't want to know my PC setup! Seriously
Show it! Is it a notebook or something like that? If so, don't be embarrassed, the only thing i have is a crappy laptop, but i don't need anything else. I don't play games, so i don't need a lot of power. SHOW IT, or tell us what you have
Lulz^^
This is why I love forums. I only use my desktop as a permanent media server, which it does just fine...
I posted in the other thread too

Since you asked so nicely
It's an "e-machine" custom built thing with a dual core 2.4GHz CPU (of some make or other - I think it's an AMD) and 4GB of RAM. I pretty much use it for browsing, DLNA streaming, software development and writing music. It doesn't need massive specs as I don't game on it that much. I've got a couple of Star Wars games, but they happily run at decent res as they're years old.
It suits my needs, but is by no means a powerhouse. I'm a console gamer, but if I wasn't then my PC would be pimped to the max as I'd game on that instead. I needs my games!
Same here, got a 360 but dont bother with that all the time either. Nice media extender though...
Thanks! Now, was that so hard? It's still better than my laptop. I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 with 2GB RAM. Not sure on the rest of the specs, but it's not fast at all. But it's OK for doing daily tasks like reading news and streaming/downloading things. If i want to game i'll power up the good ol' PS3.
Some of you have already seen these, but since it applies, here's my PC. I call her Cocaine.
I hope you like white haha.
And a cellphone pic to show s different color light behind the mobo.
