Im looking to buy a new gaming computer because my mac is really not built for it. It runs some games pretty well under windows but not as good as i would like. i have a quote for 1000$ for it atm (2.54Ghz MBP 2009 model) and i have 600$ of extra cash im willing to put into a new computer.
my basic question: What is the best gaming computer i can get in the price range of 1400-1600$?

In all seriousness, you are better off building your own because it will be cheaper. If you go that route, the only things that will be expensive are the CPU, GPU and motherboard.
Now if you don't know what processor to go with, I suggest you check out Intel's 2600K. It is Intel's new Sandy Bridge processor and it is FRICKING awesome for its price. Easily overclockable up to 4Ghz on air.

1600$ Max? I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Alienware's m11x and m15x are solid laptops with a good price. You can also check out HP also or Dells XPS series which are pretty noteworthy.
Take a look at asus laptops. They have the best price for what you get.

wow....no
i definetly am looking at Asus and Alienware atm.
do you guys have any specific models that i should take a look at? maybe a config that has worked well?
Just go for Alienware if you 100 % wants gaming laptop
If you only wants a gaming laptop then go after processor and Graphics card because RAM And hard drive you can upgrade that later , You need solid Nvidia GTX Series for good gaming
I know Lenovo's aren't technicaly gaming PC's but they have some great specs for the price there
I'm in the Alienware camp as well. My brother has one and he can multi-box WoW (5 account bot team lol) with no lag whatsoever.
But it runs any game he wants to on it with no lag and its pretty slick looking.
ive heard alienwares are a bit overpriced for what they are worth, however i like the power they put into those computers. I will definetly check that out. also, should i go for a custom built comp or just one pre-configed?
Well you cant cave in so you'll have to get atm a good solid computer thatll last you the next 10 years

joke aside best bang for the buck (or should i say fps for the buck) is the sager brand , go ahead , compare the specs and price with alienware , or anything ya want
they look more solid too (which is a huge plus compared to the childish green alien faces imo)

Well, the MacBook Pro is on eBay, and I'm in need of a replacement. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I'm just done with Apple.
Anywho, I'm in the market for a reliable, fast, and new computer (PC, no mac )
The minimum specs I'm looking for:
* Intel i5 or i7
* At LEAST 4 gigs of RAM
* Less than 2 inches thick
* At least a 15" screen
I'm also open to suggestions, so let me know.
Do you guys have any personal preferences/experiences? Best place to buy?
Sony Vaio (of some kind) or..
Alienware Laptop?
Or Dell?
Iam a dell fan even though i haven't bought any of their equipment.
Try this: http://laptoplogic.com/laptop-finder/advanced
Any price range?
by the MacBook pro I'm guessing 800 1000 is close?
I bought a Msi a6200 at electronic express for $549 on no tax weekend here. Core i5 430m, 4gb ddr3, 500 gb hdd, Bluetooth, wireless n card, and HDMI out. I'm loving it. Asus laptops are also nice.

Alienware is definitely one of my prospects...Haven't really seen any that I would consider "thin"...But I'm used to the mac of course lol.
@Max I was just thinking that I should have posted a price range. Anything from $800- ~$1100 (US)

Ive been considering getting one. I think they look really cool. Anybody have any experience with them? Or does anyone suggest something comparable?
Alienware is good.. but overpriced. IMO I wanted a nice mobo gaming device and i settled with the Lenovo Y550 ($600) about 2 years ago and it has held up fine it still able to play some of the newer games but not on high though. Gets the job done.
Same goes for all technology once you purchase something there is already something better out there for the $.
Or you can wait till thanksgiving area. Thats when they really start rolling out the good deals ( not only because of BF) Check slickdeals often they have some nicely priced gaming laptops.
Alienware laptops are overpriced and a battery drainer (the dual graphics one), but on some models you can get a high quality gaming with excellent battery power.
And they're not really overpriced, considering the hardware and production costs needed to build a SINGLE machine. I choose the upcoming MSI laptop. it's cheap
choose wisely
and thank me. be grateful.

If you're on a budget, don't bother. Gaming notebooks are never worth the money coz you can pour so much more into a PC and get much better specs.
Also, here's my favourite laptop site comparing graphics cards. Just click into the card name and then you scroll to the bottom to see what laptop has that GPU. Their review are VERY thorough.

I was more talking about cost/benefit ratios than customizability. Simple example is that my single GPU usually beats an SLI/xfire setup on a notebook, using lower costs.
Get that straight.

Agreed. Say if you buy a 1,000 dollar gaming laptop you can probably get the same/better specs for probably half the price. Plus if you have a desktop you can always upgrade while laptops its pretty pricey.
Whatever you end up getting, I strongly suggest actually trying one out in person.
Get a feel for the keyboard, and don't judge screen resolutions/picture quality by reviews or opinions from other forum members (not that they don't provide useful information). Audition the laptop you intend on purchasing. That's the only way you'll see which screen is easiest on your eye's. I made the mistake of not doing this. Never again.

Hey guys! So I'm trying to look for a good laptop, but I'm on a tight budget right now. I just want to get the best laptop out of my money which is $700. I'm not really expert when it comes to buying computers.
I prefer 14" screen because I'm going to bring it everyday to school, so portability is really important. I might do a little gaming on it but I'm going to use it mostly for programming.
Here is an HP laptop that I've seen with good reviews. It has an I5 processor which I believe is good, and it also has 6GB of ram. But what about the graphics?

Noooo! Not the pavilon! Dx They NEVER agree with Linux. Or at least my friend's laptop did.
With $700 you could get an awfully decent laptop. I suggest searching new egg for some good deals.
Edit: That Samsung is kinda sexy...I would read into it and see what people think. Also, I have a gateway and it works fine for all my computer related coding needs! And school stuff!

Whatever you do, get an HP laptop. They are the best. My extensive experience has shown that. I've had more trouble with Acer, Toshiba and others than I ever had with HP laptops. Right now I'm up to my 3rd HP laptop. My first one was a WinXP, which still is usable but need a new power socket. Number 2 is a Vista, which I am writing this on and number 3 is my newest Win7, which I reserve for coffee and breakfast in the morning at the table.
On a forum I used to frequent back in my tech support days we had a thread called "Show us yer Rig"......

An aging P4 3.2Ghz, Asus motherboard, XFX 9500GT, couple Tb drives, Win7 & Ubuntu 12.04 (Pangolin AFAIK) dual boot.
Plus, when I'm at home my A500 has a home on the desk as an aWARemote tool for Winamp etc...
Dont mind the mess, its the only place in the house I'm 'allowed' to be messy (damn these wifey characters!).

You're more showing pics of your desk rather than your PC
So here:

Thanks! That's Octocore! I can run Minecraft on full settings and explode things in-game without any lag

Yes there is, but I tried and failed. I can't find it. If anyone finds it then a link here would be great, but until then it's a valid thread.
And to stay on-topic (which pains me to do so), you REALLY don't want to know my PC setup! Seriously
Show it! Is it a notebook or something like that? If so, don't be embarrassed, the only thing i have is a crappy laptop, but i don't need anything else. I don't play games, so i don't need a lot of power. SHOW IT, or tell us what you have
Lulz^^
This is why I love forums. I only use my desktop as a permanent media server, which it does just fine...
I posted in the other thread too

Since you asked so nicely
It's an "e-machine" custom built thing with a dual core 2.4GHz CPU (of some make or other - I think it's an AMD) and 4GB of RAM. I pretty much use it for browsing, DLNA streaming, software development and writing music. It doesn't need massive specs as I don't game on it that much. I've got a couple of Star Wars games, but they happily run at decent res as they're years old.
It suits my needs, but is by no means a powerhouse. I'm a console gamer, but if I wasn't then my PC would be pimped to the max as I'd game on that instead. I needs my games!
Same here, got a 360 but dont bother with that all the time either. Nice media extender though...
Thanks! Now, was that so hard? It's still better than my laptop. I have a Compaq Presario CQ62 with 2GB RAM. Not sure on the rest of the specs, but it's not fast at all. But it's OK for doing daily tasks like reading news and streaming/downloading things. If i want to game i'll power up the good ol' PS3.
Some of you have already seen these, but since it applies, here's my PC. I call her Cocaine.
I hope you like white haha.

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l
ha ha ha! way to be productive bro.
Some people here judge everyone by their own standards
yeah... just go ahead and delete the thread im sure everyone is gonna bypass it anyway

I'd say wait for surface. It's worth the wait. Even I'm ditching Android as a tablet OS for that device.

^^^ that.
Unless there's a specific reason for wanting W7 on it (maybe you just want it now, rather than waiting), go for W8 - looks much better.

I'll close it if you really want me to, but not everyone in here's a troll. Some will actually read your post and answer constructively.

i know i probably should but im not looking to spend a ton of money on this thing as i already have a $2300-something sager gaming rig (the one good thing about deploying: the redonk amount of cash you make). i just wanted this as a small cheap portable solution.and plus i can jusp upgrade when w8 is released if i wanted.

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.
