Power button failed? This is a work around - Captivate Themes and Apps

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
enjoy, works for me thank god
I used odin to flash to stock then I used darky rom tool to flash a rom of my choice then I used sgs kernel flasher to flash my kernel and then I mapped my down volume button to the power button and the phone works well again.

3 button quesion

hello all,
question about the 3 button fix for the captivate. I just got the captivate a few months back and before i decided to rom it i investigated all the recovery tools i would need just in case.
I found 2 different variants of Odin3 one that needed a pit file and PDA file and another that had just one click restore to 2.1.
I tried the pit / PDA first if i recall it appeared to lock up, not sure on what part but i got it back in DL mode and then tried the one click which worked.
now let me preface this with before i tried anything i ensured the 3 button combo for download mode worked, and it did. I flashed Apex 5.2 and ever since then the 3 button combo ceased to work. I recently flashed to Firefly 3.0 and still the 3 button doesnt work, it would also appear the recovery mode does not work as well.
I have been getting to these modes using ADB, which works fine, but I would love to get 3 button back... but if its a risky procedure i will live with it, i do have a jig on the way, which just in case i can use to get back. but that leaves recovery mode not really accessable unless i use ADB?
any how thoughts comments suggestions are all welcome and thanks for being such an awesome site!
On a custom rom, hold the power button. Extended power menu has recovery and download right there.
How have you not seen it??
also SEARCH there is an odin that fixes the 3 button combo...
download mode is 2 button combo and no way to loose it.
hold both volumes + then plug in usb (keep held til screen comes on)
recovery mode is 3 button combo..
hold both volumes + then hold power (keep ALL held til screen comes on for 3 seconds)
studacris,
Yes i have seen the reboot into recovery, which is great the only issue i have is when flashing a different rom i want a back out solution. I also have found the fix, but was wondering how risky is it to apply this fix, and will it stay fixed? i would rather live with a minor inconvenience then a hard brick situation. thanks for the info=)
edit: this is the thread i was reading for the fix is this the most up to date one? also the attachment is missing the PIT file, is it needed anymore?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
TRusselo,
yeah i cant do either of those, which is my concern
odin one click flashes both bootloaders but sometimes, in later build phones the one click sbl.bin will, lose it's combo. The fix flashes the secondary bootloader, that is known to always work.
It's about as risky to flash as odin one click if not safer because it's only flashing one bootloader instead of both.
The pit file isn't needed you are not messing with the partitioning table in the least. Just put the .tar in the pda slot.
Just note, if you go to gingerbread, go back to stock with the one click. If you use the 3 button fix version you will guaranteed brick your phone.
Important to note that if you've flashed an I9000 based ROM your 3 button may have changed to vol up-home-power. If that doesn't work and you're on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM then you've probably just lost the sbl for 3 button and need to reflash it.
You should always be able to get into download mode via hold down vol up and vol down and plugging in the USB cable, I've never lost that.
awesome thank you for putting my mind at ease,
if i flash the fix will i need to flash the fix every time i flash to a new froyo based rom?
hmm odd cause i seem to have lost download mode.
what i have been doing to get into DL mode is;
turn off the phone,
pull battery and sim (i dont have an external SD),
put battery back
hold vol up and vol down then plug in usb cable that is connected to a PC i will get a battery charging display on screen
once you flash it you should be good to flash whatever else on top of it.
one last thing,
in that thread i linked with the fix, the instructions say to take a PDA.tar file and a pit file which was added with the odin download, but the odin download is by itself no pit file, opening the PDA.tar file i can see the SBL.bin file so i am assuming that we may not need the pit file?
you dont need the pit. it is fine.
thank you, i'll give it a try next time a flash a new rom =)
i appreciate all the info guys =)

LEarned a lesson today cognition ->eclair ->apex

Learned a lesson today. I been trying to flash back to my stock 2.1 eclair to go from cognition to apex7. But with my version of the phone I loose that "3 button " feature.
I kinda got the download mode to work last night, then I got a soft brick. I fixed it with odin and was happy.
Built a jig today with 302 ohms of resistance and no luck. (still powered on and all but no download mode).
Got it into download mode one time (with the 3 button fix through clockwork recovery), loaded "galaxys-bootloader-JVB.tar.md5" and it went through, rebooted and it went to the standard screen. I didnt want that, so I shut her down and went back into download mode so I can load the second boot loader for apex. Wouldnt go.
I ran the "3 button" fix again. But at the menu of clockwork mod in recovery mod when it said it was done, I took out the battery instead of resetting...brick. Phone doesnt respond.
Damn, lesson learned, always restart phone LOL. All this for a damn netflix app. Now I have no phone, and im going to try to find the guy who does JTAG. I have warrenty but its like 120 bucks to send it for a new one, screw that.
When I did apex7 the first step, after the phone started it said samsung i9000....does that mean I have the wrong rom on my i897? it started and booted and went to the home screen...?

there you go buddy he will set you straight. check your pm
it wasnt the not turning the phone on that bricked you. you had gingerbread I9000 bootloaders and flashing the 3 button fix replaced the secondary bootloader with a froyo one. so your primary and secondary now don't match. and you didnt need to flash the fix anyway the gingerbread bootloaders have their own combo and it hasnt been lost by anyone that ive heard of.
it is vol down+ power for download
and vol up+power for recovery.

So was it wrong to have the i9000 bootloaders? All I did was follow the instructions on what to do. Did I do that wrong?
Installation Instructions: (Thanks to Connexion2005 & ICezar for easy instructions)
1.Download ODIN 1.82: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7qta8hmcd880zth
2.Download the GB Bootloaders: http://code.google.com/p/project-con...ar.md5&can=2&q
3.Download the Talon Kernel: http://berryfx.com/RobBeane/Kernel/i...nDEV-0.1.6.tar
4.Flashback to stock JF6 for clean install.
5.Place the ApeX GB ROM package in your SD card.
6.Open Odin 1.82 and select GB bootloader package in PDA option, Put your phone in download mode using regular key combo and connect to PC. Once ODIN recognizes your phone hit START button. You may have bootloops if you try to boot your phone here. Pull the battery out and then put it back and follow step 7.
7.Open Odin 1.82 again and select TalonDev kernel in PDA option, Put your phone in download mode using 'Volume down + Power' key combo and connect to PC. Once ODIN recognizes your phone hit START button.

yeah. From day one the download mode never worked.
Battery pull, holding power and the volume up and down and whatever. Every possibility.

I meant after step 6 you should have tried this button combo, you shouldnt have flashed 3 button fix and doing this mismatched your bootloaders
If you're simply trying to get your netflix rocks off, go back to stock eclair and flash DG's GB 2.3.3 Cognition 5 ROM. It's packaged very nicely into it's own Odin1Click.
It's so easy, even a caveman(noob) can do it.

[Q] Flash FastyIII without cwm?

I am starting to experiment with GB ROMs, namely FastyIII, on my testing Captivate. This phone does not have a working power button, it's an eBay special. I was able to flash back to stock (Eclair) with no problems. I then found out how to reassign the power button to the volume up button. Worked fine. Problem is I lost that ability when I started flashing bootloaders and Boog Kernel. Is there a way to flash ROMs without using CWM? If not, I may have to get a second testing cappy and make one good one. This one has a good screen, just needs a power button. Thanks in advance for any replies.
On boogs kernel you can use the capacitive buttons in cwm.
Menu = up
Home = down
Search = select
Great to hear. Gave it a try, it works. Will proceed with flashing ROM tomorrow.

Second, how can i check the button, like before boot
victorlht88 said:

you can try flashing another rom via odin, i've faced the same issue before when i removed certain apks in custom roms before flashing.
else boot into recovery mode and see if your home button can function when you make the selections.

the phone is not rooted
Stock Recovery !
The G-Note has a stock recovery function as well. Just turn off your phone and hold the volume-up + Home + Power to enter into recovery. if this is successful then your home button functionality is good.

[Q] Soft Brick with broken VOL+ button

Hi there. I've got a problem. I have just formatted in CWM my sdcard(internal) and some others options which were there.
And now I am stuck onto Samsung Logo. The problem is that i would flash new Jelly Bean but I've got broken Vol Up button.
Is there any option to flash Jelly bean without using Vol+ button? Probably a little bit of tea got to the button and it stopped working.
I wanted to send my Advance on warranty and I wanted to make it free of any traces of using not original rom( I had CM, PAC and some others).

Download stock firmware, go to download mode and flash it with Odin.
If you're not using volup then use voldown (LOL) and flash a firmware with odin.
Ye... When i press Vol- Home Power, then big warning screen shows before my eyes and to continue to download mode i have to press vol+ button. But I somehow made it(one on thousand clicks vol+ works) and i flashed fresh jb firmware and it's still bricked on samsung's logo!
****... I accidently flashed GB firmware XXKL2 instead of LQE... Holy crap. If i somehow manage to go into download mode can i still flash JB and it will work? Or there is no chance anymore...? (hell what an idiot of me)
YEAH! I have been clicking Vol+ key for about 20 minutes and it worked once(warning screen changed to download) and I flashed LQE this time and it worked. Uf. Now I am relieved. Thank you guys for your efforts. Now i will go to service and see if they repair this key. I'm curious if they do. It's hard to live without it

You misunderstood. He used vol down key to enter download mode interface. The one it asked vol up to continue and vol down to cancel. Then, he tried pressing vol up for about 20 mins to get it work once to continue with download mode to flash the firmware using odin.
