[Q] stuck at X - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I'm a noob and I tried to root my phone. However, I messed it up and I'm not sure how.
I successfully unlocked the bootloader.
I then flashed the recovery with Amon_RA's image. All is still good.
I attempted to root installing from zip using this step "Use trackball -> "Flash zip from from sdcard" -> nexus-addon-0.1-signed.zip"
I then rebooted and now I'm stuck at X. It won't boot past that.
I can access the bootloader and all that other crap. I'm a noob so type slow and in small words to I can fix this. Until I see a reply, i'll play around with it to see if I can return the image to stock.

Where did you get that ROM from and did you check md5sum before flashing?

I got the ROM from the link at the top of this page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
It's nexus-addon-0.1-signed.zip is the file.

Also, how do I check md5sum before flashing?

oh that's not even a rom.
if you have successfully install Amon Ra, just put the ROM of your liking on the sd card and flash.

All I'm trying to do is root the phone using these instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795
I don't really want or need a new ROM. Stock is fine for me. Just want root access. Any clue how I get out of this mess?

Ok, I might have just found my problem. The instructions say to use that addon if I don't have superboot installed. I do have superboot installed. How do I reverse it?

Maybe passimage method back to stock than try again

I can only access bootloader and recovery at this point. How do I push a file to the sdcard so I can install from ZIP?

just take the sd card out and use card reader or use custom recovery then mount sdcard

what file do I put on the sdcard?

If you want to go back to stock search for passimg.zip or you can use any ROM you like.

my adb isn't recognizing my device. Fastboot is but not adb. This is why I can't push anything to the phone at the moment. This is getting frustrating.

take the sd card out and put the passimg.zip file on it

I did that and nothing happened. Is there something special I need to do in order for it to take?

It was working just fine until I installed the google addon zip described above from the sdcard. Is there any way to uninstall the addon from recovery?

The PASSIMG.zip method doesn't work for me. It briefly says it can't find image or something like that. It flashes on the screen very fast so I can't get the details. Any other suggestions for me to try? Like I said, I can boot to recovery just fine. I can even install from zip through recovery. I should have backed up that image before I started messing around with it. I'm learning as I go though.

Phew!!! Back in business with the passimg method. My mistake was adding another .zip when I renamed the file. so to the phone it looked like PASSIMG.zip.zip and wasn't recognizing it. Once I got that fixed it updated just fine. I'm booted now. I'll update then try and root once again.

Good to hear.

we used to have the tmobile mytouch and at the time i had found a .zip file that i flashed and it gave us Hebrew support so i tried it on the incredible and it worked, so i thought i would share it with everyone.
i dont know who to give credit for this, and i dont remember where i got the .zip file.

afaik you need to be rooted,
1. move .zip folder to root of your sdcard
2. boot phone into recovery
3. apply .zip form sdcard
4. reboot phone and your done!
its possible that if you name it update.zip you can do it from the stock recovery but i did not try that and seem to remember reading somewhere that you needed to be rooted.

Could you please provide more details? Did you try this on an Incredible?
I booted into recovery mode, then selected the "apply sdcard:update.zip" option, but at the end, I keep getting "E:signature veriifcation failed" and "Installation aborted"

I have installed this on two incredibles and it worked fine for me, both were rooted and I was using the unrevoked recovery. I think what you are doing is making the phone look for a file named " update.Zip"
in unrevoked recovery there is another option to select which file you want to flash, you then select the Hebrew.Zip folder. Try that and let me know what happens.
Thanks again for the explanation. I am using the plain recovery mode, so I think that is my problem.
How did you install the unrevoked recovery tool? Hopefully this is something that I can do with the rooted phone without having to get back to the "start adb in recovery race condition". I barely made it the first time (with luck) and I don't think that I can hit the same luck again...

if you rooted the phone properly the first time and have the superuser app installed it is really easy, just download the unrevoked recovery flash tool and then run it on your pc, it will give you instructions to connect the phone with debugging mode, and then you will allow the superuser app permissions when it asks you and thats about it, should only take five min.
I have a problem I'm trying to use unrevoked flash tool and I get no farther then pushing recovery. I really need help I have rooted my and installed the proper drivers but can't get past pushing recovery please help.
Thanks for this....
Finally rooted and added this, nice little tweak, and an easy thing thing I can answer when someone says, what does rooting allow your phone to do?

[Q] Need help with ROM Manager

Ok so I'm new to flashing a ROM, and Im having a little problem with ROM Manager. Ive been trying to make a backup of my current ROM prior to flashing to a new ROM. However when I choose the option to backup current ROM it shows me the name of the backup and then reboots my device (Samsung Captivate) into recovery mode. Not really sure what it wants me to do there so I choose to reboot the device, I then check to see if it made the backup and nothing??? Im not sure what it is that Im doing wrong but Im sure I must be missing a step. The phone is rooted, running 2.2 other than that nothing else has been moded. If any of you can help me I would appreciate it, I just dont want to move forward with flashing a ROM before Ive backed up the current ROM. I have made a backup of all apps and data using Titanium.

When it goes into recovery, is it the ClockWorkMod recovery menu? Green text? If it isn't getting there you need to install it from ROM manager first or just install it off an update.zip file that is floating around XDA and other sites. Once that is setup, you can run the backup through ROM Manager. It should boot into a recovery mode and then start doing a lot of writing of files to your new backup directory.
Post back if you are still having problems.
I did select the option for flashing ClockWorkMod recovery and chose the Captivate as my device. It did say that it sucessfully downloaded the file and Im assuming that it meant it installed it. And to answer your question I think I can safely say that no its not clockwork recovery when it reboots as it does say at the top of the screen "Android Recovery" so Im pretty sure that ClockWork is not installed. But I will look for that update.zip file and try to install it that way...

I'm sorry, you are looking for recovery-update.zip. I would try to run the ROM Manager install again and see what happens. I haven't had to play with the Android Recovery in quite some time but if the recovery-update.zip file is in the root of your sd card, you should be able to install it through the Android recovery. I'll keep looking. If I can find the file on my phone, i'll post it. Good luck.
If this is your first time booting into CWM recovery it will go to the base recovery first. Then you need to "reinstall packages". That will replace the recovery file with the CWM recovery file and return to the main menu. Then choose reintall packages one more time and it should bring you to CWM recovery instead of the base one. From then on it should bring you directly to the CWM recovery.
As for the backup it's done from CWM recovery. So once you get thru the steps above you will see backup and restore options on the recovery menu and you can go thru that process.
There may be some help in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163
First try to flash it again through ROM Manager.

That update.zip should have been placed there by ROM Manager. Possibly try uninstalling & reinstalling ROM manager. Else, that update.zip should be somewhere. I'd grab the one off my phone but I'm not entirely sure which one it is. My ROM already had CWM with it. I'll try to look for a correct update.zip but I'm at work so I'm not going through XDA all day.

I missed it too. The above post regarding 3e recovery is what you need to do, one of the phones I have I need to do the same process after flashing back to stock. Sorry for the confusion.
Been having a similar issue when it takes you to stock recovery, I hold down both volume buttons and power until I see AT&T let go of power it usually takes me to clockwork recovery menu, I then select whatever I want to do backup, recover, or install from sd.
I don't know why it started doing that but that's what I found works. Hope it helps.

[Q] Root on Stock Gingerbread

Tried SuperOneClick using both methods and it didn't work. Any suggestions?
I also would like to know this before I update.
Sent from my Nexus One
I couldn't get it to work either... had to revert back to 2.2 and root using Super One Click from there to restore back to my CM7 backup.
I would suggest waiting for superoneclick to be updated to support gingerbread.
Yep, that's what I was going to do but was hoping someone had a way beforehand so I could my backups going again
Install the Gingerbread update using a custom recovery, then install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 BEFORE rebooting.
Or if you want to root manually, follow the instructions for rageagainsthecage in my signature.

Tried to root manually with your instructions w/ rageagainstthecage but its not cooperating... Once I run rageagainstthecage, it will exit out of shell, then USB bugging dissapears on the N1 notification bar, and can't get it back without rebooting the N1, also it won't show up in windows device manager until N1 is rebooted...
Did you use this method to root your phone with 2.3.3 or did you flash the update then flash the other update to get root?
Thanks,
How did you revert back to 2.2? What Passimg.zip did you use? Or are you unlocked?

It comes up with the message "Main Version is Older!" "Update Fail!"
My phone is not rooted and on official 2.3.3 flashed through stock recovery via update.zip
EDIT: Used first method, reflashed with passimg.zip (frg33) then updated one by one back to fgr83g, rooted (superoneclick) installed amon_ra, recovery via rom manager, put 2.3.3 gingerbread update on SD as update.zip, also put the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on SD.
Flashed 2.3.3 update via amon_ra recovery (had to turn off signature verification), once it reset (not rebooted) back to recovery picked to flash zip, picked su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, (had to turn off signature verification again), rebooted, and now have root!! Now i can finally restore my apps

Great, thanks alot for the help
im also rooting but grj22 build, what do i need to download to my sd before i unlock my boot loader?
To unlock your bootloader, you don't need anything on the sdcard. To continue with rooting, you would need to have a custom recovery on your computer and use fastboot to install it after you unlock it, then flash the zip that was mentioned above (which would need to be on the sdcard) to actually root your phone from the custom recovery.

ok col, now heres the kicker...i flashed recovery-RA-nexus-v2.1.1.img as my recovery , and im pretty sure i put cryogen 7 on the sd so i fudged it up pretty good.whats the best recovery to flash i, if had gingerbread 2.3.4 which came ota au natural? also im finding the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file either, anyone have a proper link to it?
If you're going to flash cm7 or ANY pre-rooted rom you do not need to bother with the su.zip. Just flash the rom from custom recovery.
i keep getting the no img wrong img message in fastboot when i try to hboot?
Fastboot is used to flash the custom recovery. The recovery flashes the rom.

[Q] Cant Flash Bootloader

Hello,
I got a A853 Milestone.
I would like to have miuiandroid on it.
I already rooted my phone (I got Superuser.)
In next step i tried to flash my boot loader (90.78).
I made it with rsd lite 4.6 -> Success.
So i tried to install an unsigned update.zip (miuiandroid ->For Milestone)
It wont work my loader tells mit it is an unsigned rom so he wont be able to install it.
i flashed my bootloader again with an .sbf from an different source. same result. rsd told me that he flashed it but i cant instal miui.
i tried it with an third loader. same result.
now i cant even press start in rsd lite. and i don't know why. he is recognizing my phone but i am not getting any file properties.
what am i doing wrong?
i am looking forward to your answers.

The greyed out start button in RSD is because the filename is too long. Try renaming the sbf to a.sbf or something.
Have you flashed the Vulnerable Recovery for Milestone? After that you need to install OpenRecovery then you can try applying MIUI.

Alright, flash the VR from android.doshaska.net/rootable
Make sure to backup everythng you want to save (apps, etc)
Then get OR, place MIUI in OpenRecovery/updates, enter OR, do a Nandroid, full wipe of data and both caches, apply MIUI, wipe caches, apply baseband and reboot.

You can't flash the bootloader because it's locked.
How are you trying to flash the ROM?

hmm i am not really getting it.
i thought with rsd i am replacing the bootloader with a vulnerable bootloader.
i am trying to flash the the rom with OpenRecovery wich i copied to my root folder of the sd card. also i copied the update.zip to the root folder of my sd card.
by holdin on and the camera button and the sound buttons i am trying to install it.
is maybe this my failure?

Once the VR is installed, you just go into OR by turning the phone off, holding Power+x and then camera+ vol up when you see the Motorola Logo.

-Put Phone into bootloader mode(turn off, power button+d-pad up)
-Launch RSD Lite
-Rename SBF file to some one letter name.
-Browse to SBF
-Plug phone into computer
-Click start.
-If you get errors, look at this thread: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...hing-process-0x7100-rsd-lite.html#post1274587
-Phone should reboot automatically, if not reboot into bootloader mode.
-Now take the OpenRecovery and update.zip from AOR 3.3 and put them on root of SD Card
-Place zip file of that ROM in OpenRecovery/updates on SD Card
-Boot into recovery mode (Power button+x/power+camera, camera+volUp)
-Use D-Pad to select apply update.zip
That gets you straight into AOR or OpenRecovery, with VR installed.
You made my day!
Thank u very much!
Its working finally!
Thank you
