[Q] MCR script missing

hey guys, just rooted my Samsung Captivate. Everything has been going great till now. i Downloaded a lagfix, which is honestly the main reason i rooted my phone. however after everything (yes, i did everyting right) i didnt have the app that was included in the .zip file iput in my phone. the app is called MCR scripts.
i did some reseach and i found this key line
"*** If MCR Scripts DOES NOT show up, its probably because you don't have the non market install hack on your phone. In the update.zip you can find the apk and install via ADB, but I didn't do it this way. ******"

so how do i just get the MCR scripts? i downloaded tayutama's zip file and i found the folder named "scripts" with the 3 files in there but they are .sh files.
so what do i do here? do i need to convert then to apk or something? please help!!!

forgot to mention...because i have a captivate i can not just go to setting/applications/ and choose for any app to be allowed or what not. i simply do not have that option. i use android central to get my apk files working on my phone. I have tried to run a zip file that will just let me install the apk file on my phone with no need for a computer. But that was to no avail.

right, i didn't notice that...wow. either way that new thread the link is dead. and for me to run that packaged zip file i would need to completely set my phone to stock, nor do i know how to do that. Im simply asking for just the MCR files in apk format if that is possible at all. If not then can you please point me in the right direction? Thank you for all the help so far, i truly do appreciate it.

i guess the real question here is what is your ultimate goal?
you want froyo? install a rom (most everything on the dev forum will install a lagfix for you, click on the link in my sig)
you just want a 'lagfix' on stock eclair? install a 2.1 kernel with voodoo

rom would be customizing the android correct? like a new home layout and what not? That would be cool but im happy with what i have...i would just like to be able to download any app for free. and get the lag fix. i got the first part down (apps for free) by rooting the phone, all i have to do is get the apk downloaded on my comp then run android central to install it on my phone.
so i download kernel with voodoo, is it just a drop into internal sd...same as when i rooted my phone? then go into recovery and choose reinstall packages?

i downloaded the lag fix for my phone which is like near the bottom of the page. i renamed it to lag fix zip file tp "update" but since i have the other files that are also renamed to "update" like for my rooting and stuff the file ended up being update(3) idk if that makes a difference but when i booted my phone from recovery mode after choosing resinstall pacakges, the phone boots up normally no long pause durgin the at&t screen or anything so i know the lag fix didnt work...also because the phone is still...slow. helllp! please.

you need to remove ANY other update.zip files from your phone and rename THAT file to update.zip
then reinstall packages
once you have installed an update.zip it is no longer required on your sdcard

[Q] Questions from someone on the verge of Flashing (Cognition 3.02)

Hey all,
So I'm am effing fed UP with Samsung. My Captivate is a hardware powerhouse, and with the stock Eclair firmware and all their bloatware, it's laggy, bogged down, and just not the device I wish it was. And with the talks that the Galaxy S phones are virtually unbrickable, I have decided to seriously consider ROOTing my phone and flashing the Cognition 3.02 ROM. I have watched a lot of videos, done my research, but I still have a few lingering questions for those of you out there who have recently flashed this ROM, preferably for those of you that this is the first or near-first ROM you've flashed. I know how the process works, but some specifics are bugging me and holding me back.
Ok, so I've listed some of my major questions below. Feel free to answer some or all of them if you've got the time, or DM me if that's easier. lf I think of any other Qs I have I'll post them in subsequent replies.
1. First and foremost, what process did you use to root and flash cognition on your Captivate? I've been looking at the MobileTechVideos three part tutorial on youtube which most people seem to recommend. Is this what you used? Was it as easy as simply following the instructions word-for-word? Did you run into any problems along the way?
2. I know to use Titanium Backup to backup my apps and stuff, but I've read a lot of places that I should only use it to restore those apps, and not to backup and restore user data like settings and contacts. How did you do it? My major concerns are about my contacts/phone book, which I have synced to my google account, but I also have syncs to my facebook and twitter accounts, and my phonebook is nicely linked and everything across all three. I'm afraid to forfeit this organization, so I just want to know that I'll be able to get everything back the way it was without too much trouble. I know you can export your contacts to your SD cards, and I could presumably import them from their after flashing, but I just want to be clear on how that all works.
3. Do you use your phone as a digital music player? I do, and I use iSyncr to sync it to my iTunes. If you do as well, did flashing screw any of this up? Playlists, etc? Will I need to re-sync or will it all be there once the phone scans my external SD (which wont be wiped since I'll remove it beforehand)?
4. In your first few days of use, what are the biggest improvements you see in the Cognition ROM as far as daily use is concerned over the stock firmware? Any problems you've come across? What's the selling points here, in layman's terms.
5. Do you have any regrets about flashing?

1. manually rooting is overrated. most, if not all, custom roms automatically root your phone for you, so there really is no need for you to do it yourself. except the first time: root your phone using the one click since it's simple, grab rom manager from the market and use it to download an update.zip containing clockworkmod recovery for the captivate and leave that update.zip on your phone and never change it or delete it. it makes flashing new roms so much easier and there is really no need to ever remove or change it. boot into recovery, reinstall packages twice, install zip from sd card, and pick your rom. also, you will never need to use rom manager again unless you lose that update.zip.
2. I use titanium backup in batch mode (hit the menu softkey and hit batch). click backup all user apps and system data, but uncheck everything that is in red text, therefore backing up only things in green text (useful system settings, contacts, calendar, messages, etc) and white text (user installed apps). then run batch operation. install new rom, use batch to restore all missing apps and system data. to re-backup newer settings, app data, or updated apps, use backup all new apps and newer versions, and then either redo old backups or forced redo of all backups.
3. yes, but I just copy and paste my music files over instead of syncing them. also your internal sd is never wiped unless you use master clear on odin, which I have never done, nor do i ever wish to, because in my opinion there is no reason to. therefore both your playlists and your music would not be wiped whether you put them on the internal or external sd. (unless of course, you decide to use master clear)
4 & 5. I agree with faroid.

Be sure you have the correct odin set up and recognizing your phone on your pc. Eventually you will need to use it for one reason or another. The most common is the odin3 one click jf6 but some newer builds cannot be flashed to firmware older than jh2.

1. To root i use one click root/ unroot vary simple plug in and press root then install clockwork recovery from the market its free with clockwork recovery you can flash your cognition

Did you use the full MobileTechVideos method when your phone got bricked? Or did you flash without reflashing to stock and wiping everything?

So how do I know which one I should use? Is it based on the ROM I flash, or my hardware (Captivate)?

Which odin stock firmware is based on the build (four digit number under battery such as 1006) and what version your phone came with when new, such as jf6 or jh7.

Do you by chance know which one I'd need off hand? I'm at work and don't feel like pulling my phone apart, but I can tell you that I bought my Captivate the day it came out, so presumably it came with the oldest firmware the Captivate ever came packaged with.

1. No need to root. That's an extra step you don't need. My method, get the update.zip for clockwork mod, just search the Dev section, no need to even install Rom Manager or anything. Take that update.zip and put it on the root of your internal SDcard (just the normal phone storage, not an external SD. Then using adb or button method reboot into recovery, choose reinstall packages. The phone reboots into stock recovery. Choose reinstall packages again and this time you get Clockwork. Wipe data, install zip from SD, choose zip file, pick Cog, install and done.
2. I use titanium for user apps only, ie, things I got from market. All my contacts are synced with google, so once I add my google info under accounts they are back. Sorry, i don't mess with facebook or twitter so i can't answer that. As far as settings, you just have to manually do that, ie, ringtones, wireless networks, etc.
3. Yes I do. And I also use iSyncr. No problems whatsoever. As long as you don't do a MasterClear. That option under Odin will wipe your internal SDcard also. The Wipe Data under Clockwork recovery just wipes out installed apps and settings but leaves your internal SD intact.
4. Honestly, it's just a much better experience overall. The phone is faster, smoother, and more responsive. Plus DG has taken the liberty of removing all the ATT crap and un-needed apps.

My only advice would be to "be prepared". My sure you have button recovery available ahead of time. Check your Rev version of phone, ie, the date under the battery. It seems newer Revs require a different version of stock Odin One-click. Some people have had issues running the original One-click. If you have any doubts about your phones ability to go to download mode, in case you need to go back to stock, spend the $1 on building a USB Jig.
You will find that flashing is easy. Recovering from unexpected errors can be easy if you are prepared.

So do I not need to be rooted to use Ti-BU? I thought I saw that under the product description in the marketplace.
Also, under #1, when you say "Wipe Data" you are referring to an option in the Clockwork Recovery menu, not an Odin MasterClear, right? Will this wipe my internal SD?

If you got the phone on release you likely have a 1006 build with working 3 button recovery and can safely use the odin3 one click jf6.

TiBu needs root. I rooted using one click, then backed up user apps and data (used built in contact export to save contacts and smsbackup for texts).
Then I just ran the update.zip for CWR and flashed Cog - was my first flash too and pretty painless. TiBu returns your apps as if you never changed them.
Make sure you can access recovery and dl mode though.

Sorry, forgot you would want to backup before installing a new ROM. Yes, to use Tibu on your current ROM you will need root.
As for wipe data, yes it's a clockwork option. Like I said in #3 wipe data just removes user installed apps, and changes all settings to stock, but all data on your internal store will stay there, pics, music, etc.
Master Clear is the Odin option, which I never use by the way, that will completely delete everything on your internal SD, bye bye music, pics, etc.

This is all EXTREMELY helpful by the way.
Quick question about USB Jigs--is it easy to build one myself or should I splurge on the ~$15 one MobileTechVideos sells? There's seems pretty fancy, and I can't afford to be phoneless as I putz around trying to jimmy myself a jig.

I can't speak from experience but there's a thread here in QA that makes it seem easy. Just get 3 x 100kohm resistors, wire them in series, twist it to look like a horseshoe, there you go. If you have a radioshack or other electronics store near you it's worth a shot. Like I said, I think all 3 resistors cost may $1 total. You can also test it on your phone to make sure. Touch the jig to the 2 leads, if it goes into download mode instantly you did it right. Pull battery and reboot and all is well.

Ok, so, the plan = build working jig and DL proper Odin just in case, one-click root, Ti-BU, move clockwork update.zip and cognition zips to my root folder, reboot in recovery, reinstall packages/flash clockwork, then wipe and flash cognition. This sound correct?

That sounds about right. Really the only thing different i do is on the root of my storage I create folders for ROMs. So I have a Cog folder with the rom in it. Once you have Clockwork installed and you are choosing to flash, it will let you navigate to different folders. That's just my preference because I don't like to have too many individual files on my SD. Minor thing, just thought I would mention it.

Haha, appreciate the advice; I like a little organization in my life as well.
Sounds like you've flashed a few different ROMs. Have you ever bricked your phone to the point where you needed a jig? Or has it always been smooth sailing?
I guess I'm just trying to figure out why one person's phone would brick and anothers wouldnt. It kind of makes me assume that if you brick your phone, you've done something wrong, and if you just do the process right, everything should go smoothly. But maybe that's naive of me.

[Q] Rooting my captivate, can't copy root file to phone

Hey folks. I'm bailing on Gingerbread because it was causing me too many problems. I'm trying to get back on Firefly 3.0 and I'm stuck at getting the phone rooted.
Whenever I try to copy the Root.zip from the AIO folder over to the phone's root folder, I get an error about the parameter being incorrect. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Use Fugu root? Easier.... Also depending on what Gingerbread you are on there are kernels that have the root scrip baked in them.

^ you misread he's not on gingerbread, he wants to flash firefly.
You don't need root to flash a ROM. Odin a kernel that has cwm baked in. boot into recovery and flash the ROM.

Thought he was on GB trying to get on... you know what ya I missread. @OP do what Studa said xD. Wonder why people think they need root to flash roms..... I blame Rom Manager.

I know I don't need to root the phone, but in order to get certain things done on the phone, it's necessary.
I'm actually at a wall right now. I used SamsungCaptivate-SGHi897-UCKB2-Rooted-One-Click which successfully booted my phone to ATT 2.2 firmware, but I can't get any Odin to pick up on it now. I've tried five different Odins.
At this point, I think once I get the phone up and running on Firefly, I'll be walking away from flashing until I get another phone. Then I can use this for testing, etc.
On a side note, before I started this project yesterday, my modem was messed up. Now it would seem I have a successful connection to wifi, which I couldn't get.
As great as that is, I still can't get Odin to pick up my phone. Any thoughts?

Was that kb2 package heimdall?
If so you have to uninstall the heimdall driver and reinstall the Samsung driver.
Either way I would reinstall the Samsung drivers but it is a must if you used heimdall add the drivers conflict.

Alright. That's done, but I'm on I896UXJL1-stock now, and I'm pretty sure in doing that through Odin 1.85 I unrooted the phone. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's why I used the ATT stuff, because it auto-rooted the phone.
So it would seem I have some issues to work through. I can either root my phone and be stuck with ATT firmware that I don't want, or I can unroot the phone and use Rogers stock and hope for the best with Firefly.
This is by far the most confusing computer-related issue I've ever worked with. There's too many options to play with and they all work differently.

Why would you be stuck on at&t firmware? Why do you need to root before flashing firefly? Why don't you root Rogers stock?

Okay, so maybe I'm a little in the dark on the rooting issue. Basically, I'm going back to Firefly because I thought it was amazing. Fast, responsive, and no issues I can think of on my phone.
I'm rooting the phone because it's my understanding that in order to spoof my location in order to get certain apps (Google Music), I'd need to be rooted.
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this done, and my biggest problem, to reiterate, is that I have about fifteen different Roms, all either ATT or Rogers, three different Pit files, and so, so many Odin programs.
I'm now on 2.1 with that Toronto stock firmware, in order to work around the 3e error in recovery mode when trying to put on Clockwork. Unfortunately, now I'm getting some other error in regards to the Update.Zip file, Status 7.
I apologize for confusing people, but I promise I've read as much as I can about the tools I'm using, but I'm running in circles, flashing back and forth trying to find solutions.

you do not need to root before flashing the rom. it will be rooted after and then you can do what you need to do to get your apps working if you need to (firefly contains canadian locale cause its based off of rogers froyo firmware) changing stuff before you flash so apps can work is a waste of time as the flash will overwrite the firmware you just tweaked.
now, since your on eclair i'm attaching an update.zip that contains cwm, put it in the root folder of your sdcard boot into recovery select reinstall packages twice and it should boot into cwm where you can then flash firefly.

You're a frickin' genius, Studa. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I've got Firefly on thanks to that Update file, and I'm getting the ball rolling on everything else. If I wasn't so broke, I'd donate, but I hope my thanks is good enough. I really appreciate the help. It cut through twelve hours of stupid.

Some Pointers Please on Flashing Original VZW MotoDroid?

Okay ... I have the Samsung Droid Charge and I'm quite comfortable flashing ROMS/Kernels/CWM Odin etc.
My wife has my old original Verizon Moto Droid (stock) and it is starting to act up a little. I'm thinking of flashing a ROM onto it to update things and see if it acts any better.
Like I said; I am comfortable using Odin and CWM on my Charge. What's different with the Droid? What will I need to accomplish the tasks? Is there an Original stock ROM available I can revert back to if things don't work out or she doesn't like it?
It looks like there's a Windows based app instead of Odin? I am running Win7-64 bit on my desktop.
Any pointers getting me headed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

You could use superoneclick v 1.7 to root it, you can install cwm recovery on it and flash a rom, I would reccomend project elite for its great stability. If anything ever goes wrong you can sbf back to stock

I just Flashed Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0 on my stock OG droid and it rocks. Some pointers that I couldn't find in the rest of the forums:
Like mentioned above, you have to use superoneclick 1.7 (or revert back to 1.6 if the frk76 -the latest update- has put it self on the phone)
I used "mybackup root" (free in the market) to back up my apps and data (messages, call logs, pictures, and music). Worked great.
I logged into my google account to back up contacts, calendar, etc. Also worked great.
Here is the part that everyone has a problem with: Rom Manager.
The stock ClockworkMod Recovery (2.5.0.1) in Rom Manager does not work for the OG Droid. I was able to get it to work though by going to "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" at the bottom on the Rom Manager screen and flash ClockworkMod Recovery (3.1.0.2).
After that it was smooth sailing. Remember to perform a Nandroid Back up, do a factory reset/wipe data, and what ever else the ROM you are installing suggests you do. I had to do a recovery a couple of times figuring out that SPRecovery won't work for Flashing new ROMS.

sbf back to stock ... could you expand on that? I don't know what it is. The Motorolas are obviously quite different than the samsungs when doing this stuff ...
Edit: I am having trouble finding the links for downloading the superoneclick, CWM and the ROM. Odin isn't used on this phone? What will I use to install CWM? Project Elite sounds like the one I would want. Stability is key above advanced tools and eye candy. It's for my wife and it will be used as a phone and messaging only pretty much. Maybe a few pictures. I would want the market and all apps she might want to be still accessible.

No I haven't used nandroid even though some on Charges do. Odin isn't something you install on your phone. It is a computer based program that you use as an interface between the computer and phone to flash 'tar' files to your phone. ROMS will come in a file format with a .tar.md5 file extension and you use Odin to flash them. There are complete stock 'Odin' ROMS out there that you can use to flash your phone back to stock. This is the fail-safe route I have used when learning to flash that saved me from a few bricked phones. I am leery of flashing her Droid without having the same abilities available to me. A nandroid backup isn't going to do any good if the phone pukes half way through a flash and gets bricked. Or am I incorrect in that statement?
I've seen mention of a windows based app here that I assumed was something akin to Odin. Is there a fail-safe fall back to a stock rom for this phone should you need to recover from a bricked state? I'd hate to flash the wife's phone without knowing going in that I have the ability to recover from a bad flash.
CWM is stand alone on the Charge. You can install it with Odin or other methods such as adb (which I am not familiar with). But getting it through an app is fine too. I would assume there are then zip files available for updating to a more recent version of cwm after a version is on the phone. CWM is also embedded into many ROMs available so that when you flash a ROM via Odin, CWM is on the phone when you boot.
What is the button sequence for entering recovery on the Droid?

Don't let these guys scare you off. If you can flash your charge then you should have no problem with an og Droid . I just fixed my sister inlaws the other day . it took me 20 min. Here's a guide anyone could follow . Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version (driod forums . net ) (I'm not allowed to post the link for some reason) And also I would recommend project elite or cyan 7, both work great.

im on 2.3.6 now and fancy a change because when i click phone or messages it keeps closing and its starting to do my head in.
which rom should i go for?
could you guys point me in the direction of a good guide were i can flash with odin.

CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.

I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.

i flashed my phone with another rom but didnt like it so i flashed it back to the value pack 2.3.6 jvu and then rooted it with this http://www.androidauthority.com/root-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-android-2-3-6-xxjvu-48441/
but i cant uninstall all the stock apps with super manager app. last time i flashed it i could do it. but didnt use that guild and cant find it now.
so as its not rooted i cant flash with the one you have mentioned

I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.

i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them

I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash

Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.

ye i did a full wipe.
i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah

MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.
