WEP Encryption for WiFi Hotspot - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to ask if there's a way to enable WEP for the portable hotspot feature on the tab. Currently the only options are either open or WPA2. I'm planning to use my tab as an access point for my DSi. I'm looking for a solution that at most would not require me to root my tab. Thanks!

I literally have the exact same problem. I am running the Neutrino ROM ver. 2.2GT on my Atrix 4G, and the only option for security in Portable Hotspot is for WPA2-PSK. Very annoying, because my PSP and my DSi both do not support this standard.
So, is there any way to add in WEP support? I really don't want to go unsecured, because there is a risk of someone connecting and tearing through my paltry 2GB data cap

I apologize for reviving such an old thread, but I suppose it's better than creating a new one with the same topic instead, eh?
Also, just to add: Yes, I am aware that I could just use something like Barnacle Tether (which DOES support WEP), but it uses AD-HOC, which the DS and PSP do not support. I presume that the default Portable Hotspot option in the Neutrino ROM I am using does not use AD-HOC, as I AM able to connect with my DS and PSP when it is unsecured.

Why is my phone doing AD-HOC?

I'm tring to run WiFi tethering software so I can get internet access on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I have an original Motorola Droid phone. I rooted the phone and when I run any WiFi tethering software it's broadcasting in Ad-Hoc mode. For some reason my Tablet can't see any Ad-Hoc networks. So, this is a big problem for me.
My friend has a Droid Incredible and he has a custom ROM installed on his phone and his phone doesn't broadcast in Ad-Hoc mode, his phone broadcasts with a regular WiFi connection. Why does his work that way and mine only works in Ad-Hoc? Do I have to install a custom ROM to get mine to work in regular WiFi mode? If so, which ROM is recommended?
Another solution is to get my Tablet to recognize Ad-Hoc networks. Is there some way to do that also?
Thanks so much for all your help and time!
Which tethering app are you using?
Both Wireless Tether and the 2.2 default 3G Hotspot app are broadcasting in infrastructure mode.
I remember my Wii not being able to connect to a hotspot created via Wireless Tether - did'nt try 3G Hotspot yet...
Well, I've tried different Hot Spot Apps and they are all the same. I used the same app on both my Droid phone and my friends Incredible phone. His phone worked in Infrustructure and mine worked as Ad-Hoc. I don't know what default 3G Hostspot app you are talking about. My phone didn't come with any. From what I was reading it has to do with the hardware of the phone. Since my phone is so old it only supports Ad-Hoc and the newer phones support Infrustructure. I think that's what people are saying.
I've been reading there is a way to make Tablets see Ad-Hoc but I can't find any information on how to do it with the Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I guess there are different patches and you need to find the right version that's compatible with your Tablet.
So, the only solutions I can see is get a newer phone that supports Infrustructure or to find the patch that works with my Tablet and lets it see Ad-Hoc.
Thanks!

[Q] Secured WIFI Issues?

Does anyone else have problems getting their D3 to connect to a wifi network secured with wpa/ wpa2 psk? Mine absolutely refuses to, I've never gotten past obtaining an IP address, which is odd because my asus transformer and my laptop have no problem connecting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
bump... please someone help lol
No issues here.
Don't mean to state the obvious, but are you sure you have the correct password/phrase? Try deleting the connection on one of your other devices and then re-establish it to make sure you have it right. Also, which the password/phrase entry box on the D3 as you put each character in to make sure it's going in correctly.

Hi there,
The XT860 version connects to WPA/WPA2 PSK no problem at all and has been generally supported in linux-based systems for quite some time. I imagine if this is your problem, it's related to a network setting more so than your phone.
1) Check the SSID -- they are case sensitive
2) Check if there's a MAC ID filter, if so, you need to add your phone
3) Make sure DHCP is enabled on your router (should be by default)
4) Make sure your passcode is set properly, again case sensitive.
If your problem is with WPA2 Enterprise, that's a different issue and I can explain to you how to fix that.
Cheers,
Justin
I appreciate the responses.
1. SSID is correct.
2. No Mac ID filter.
3. DHCP is enabled.
4. Passcode is set properly.
Still wont connect for some reason with this type of security. Im pretty certain that it connected when it was unsecured btw and when I set a WEP, but for some reason it wont connect with WPA.
Any other ideas/ advice would be appreciated. Thanks Again.
Here's a much more thorough guide:
http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com.au/articles/41635-How-to-fix-Android-Wi-Fi-problems
One thing not in the guide is also the ensure the encryption type matches up -- there are both TKIP and AES; make sure the Router is set to AES (it's a superior encryption method, and I can confirm that it works).
I can confirm that WPA2 works on the Droid 3, XT860 and I'll assume it works in general since there are very few posts on a Google search. If this were a phone issue, it would be a widely cited concern given the prevalence of WPA networks.
Might just be a problem with the wifi chip in your D3. I use a DGL-4500 router and my D3 connects to it just fine, using WPA2 AES. If you get the same issues with other routers I would take the phone in for a replacement.
I noticed on my netgear router that the mode was set to 300mbps for n wireless. Dropped it down to 180 or whatever the next lowest srtting was and a)solved the same problem and b)no longer drops the wifi broadcast.
Huzzah!

its not the wifi chip because it connects to other networks, tomorrow morning im gunna try changing the security type tomorrow and see what happens... this is really weird because my asus transformer connects just fine, any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, so i tried changing the settings to wep, couldnt connect... I turned security off, and it connects just fine... this leads me to believe its gotta be something with the encryption method. anyone have any ideas? Any advice would be appreciated.

extremely weird, after messing with every possible security setting.. it finally worked.

Ad hoc support for ics?

Hi,
Is there any sulotions for ICS to support ad hoc? I have searched alot and I need to connect my Note to my PC's internet. The problem is that my pc is to old to support connectify etc...
Reverse tethering app uses my data plan in order to appear the connection as 3G. And it uses cable. Not good enough.
Ad hoc would be best option.
Thank you

If you ever heard of an application for Nokia called JOIKU HOTSPOT you will be interested on this topic. I use joiku hotspot on my nokia phone to enable to connect to multiple devices at home. I don't have wired internet. Since this is an ahhoc wifi hotspot I am not updating to ICS unless a hack is available to enable wpa supplicant to "see" the joiku adhoc signal. On gingerbread I had to download and install a modified wpa supplicant file to connect to joiku .

I have used joiku on my nokia
exactly i still dont understand wat exact you want.
You saying reverse tethering have some issue - Now reverse tether application using your wired Internet of your PC for your android device
While Joiku spot is for sharing your device network to PC
So question is you want to share net from your device to PC
OR
want to share PC internet to device?
Edit :wat i understand now is
You dont have wifi router, but just you have created wireless netwok (virtual) and you want to share your device net to PC wirelessly
if yes
try this, it have ad hoc support if i remember correctly, since long i have not used it.

I don't know. It is strange. If i have no credits in my sim card, and I connect to internet via the app, it goes fine. But I can't see connection as 3G and some apps don't work due to this.
Then when I put credits to my sim card, the connection appears as 3G. And the data plan button turns green whenb checking in setings. If i turn of I lose coonection as 3G. Some times it doesn't use data plan, but often it does.
BTW, I never use data plan for anything it is always disabled, but the reverse tether app turns on.
No idea what is wrong.

I never asked for anything else than a solution for ad hoc support for ICS for galaxy note.
And u shoud had started ur own post with ur nokia. U ruined the thread too

[Q] wifi hotspot connecting though not working

Hi!
I´m using a moto x with stock kitkat 4.4.4
Today I tried using the hotspot tool for the first time. It does spread a wifi signal, and my notebook and tablet, they both connect. The problem is I can not surf the web. It´s like there is no data transfer, though my moto x can surf the web perfectly.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
First thought change frequency band to 2.4Ghz under, setup Wi-Fi hotspot.

It is set on 2.4ghz. If I change it to 5ghz the notebook doesn't see the hotspot.

Hi! Thanks but I have not got to that point yet.I would rather claim the warranty if I can t solve it easyly.
I did reboot phone and tablet. Still not working. By the way, the notebook/tablet stays 1 minute or so trying to surf the web before chrome says there is a problem with the connection.

Disable carrier check with T-Mobile changed with marshmallow?

Has anyone found a reliable method to disable the carrier check on marshmallow? I recently went over and they throttled me after hitting the 7gb mark. I made the dun change in my apn but it still is over.
Thanks!
I've been wondering the same thing. Since updating to 6.0, no setting or app has helped out. I've been using WiFi router app forever and it's worked flawlessly before updating to 6.0.

well, tmobile did start a campaign about a month ago to stop all people that are tethering illegally. they have stated that they know everyone who is tethering illegally now.
---------- Post added at 11:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:36 AM ----------
anyways, nothing to do with your question, but http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/attention-questions-t3228454
I also realized that I had the tethering no provision set to True, just switched to false and will see
So all the prior stuff stopped working. I can't get wireless to stop counting, but if you download foxfi, buy the key for it or pdanet, install the pdanet client on your computer, you can wired USB tether without it counting against mobile Hotspot. You have to use their option to hide tether from carrier but I can confirm that this works without it counting against Hotspot usage
