hello, i was wandering

This is that kind of question that comes to every XDA member's mind sooner or later (including me ). The thing is that, making a ROM requires special knowledge, e.g. you must know the Java programming language, XML, and some other stuff. So before you make your ROM, you should learn those things first. Making apps is good start.

ahhhhh... so like for eg. an app made by myself to do with music player or calender.
hmmmm i will also have to do some research on java script programming too.
(i hit the thanks button)
okay i will look into that first. once tht has been researched on and all the rest i will look for a god program that i can make the update.zip with
I don't think you will need to know JavaScript, although I'm not 100% sure. It's entirely different from Java.
Any app will do. I made my first app some days ago, the ICS simple clock.
If you have no experience with the Java language, I think it's a little too early to mess around with update.zips, just sayin'

Haven't seen many updates, feel like the devs are finally moving on.
Is this really the end ?
Of course not!
I remember when I started web devving. I was faced with a problem: I wanted a website, but couldn't find anyone who would do what I wanted. So I learnt myself, and now I own a successful web design business.
The moral of this story is: If you think there is a need for it, just teach yourself some java, c++, etc and you're good to go!
As you can see on git, scooter is doing a lot of work but also:

I've been making some slow progress as well. Granted it's very time consuming.
But yah, I'm still going too!

OK, since you have no programming skills then you won't be able to even attempt. I would teach you but I'm too lazy and I have enough on my plate already
I suggest you look at YouTube for tutorials.
If you have any problems feel free to drop me a PM

I think that won't work.
I really want to help, but what do I need to read up on? I've already read up about Java and some Android development, but I want to know what else I need to familiarise myself with before I begin. I think it will add to my academic pursuits.
Any help appreciated.
If I were you I would start by using a GNU/Linux distro if you don't already, and getting familiar with using the terminal and building software manually. Then I'd learn C. x86 assembly can come in handy too, but it's not a must.
Java is mostly irrelevant, unless you want to develop features on the OS/Apps and not just port.

As a first distro you will want to check out Ubuntu.
Best way to learn anything about this kind of stuff: Google. Google. Google. and Google some more.

Download one (eg. Ubuntu) and install it on a virtual machine or computer and use it.
Once you've browsed around the graphical OS enough and are familiar with basic usage (shouldn't take you long at all) use your google fu and learn basic commands, for example the ones listed here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal
If you want a book reference, you might like "Linux in a Nutshell", but it's probably overkill

You're welcome
As for GIMP, I learned GIMP by myself, watching only a few tutorials, took me a long time, but now I know GIMP as the palm of my hand
But there is a great Youtube channel I'd like to give you with some awesome GIMP tutorials.
Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/user/GimpedTutorials
May I ask why you use GIMP and not photoshop? As I'm a graphic designer I just don't understand why people use software like that. Same with software as Sony Vegas.
Sent from my GT-I9070 using xda app-developers app
First of all, GIMP is (legally) free.
Secondly, GIMP has a more user friendly interface, and I have found it over all, on par with Photoshop in terms of features, and much easier to use.

Seems legit
But I think if you want to do something with your creative mind for business purposes, you should definitely step off and go on Adobe

No doubt
GIMP...
Actually I love to respect the efforts which was made by the people of an open community to develop GIMP which is an open source software.
In the case of business, small shops which want a legal software for creating the simple stuff like logos only can't afford legally!
What most people do is that they just simply download it from torrent, I have also downloaded but that don't give the feeling of original software as it is not right if we further think about this topic...
Adobe is best in it's place & GIMP is best in the open source world
That's why I like to use GIMP instead of using pirated & cracked Adobe Photoshop.
One more thing, Adobe Photoshop is costly if I just want to create fun things at my home

You could try to get in contact with the developers of this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462783
They made an app to help create a second partion on external SD and if you have a modified kernel you can choose between 2 ROMS Read about it in there.
