OTA 5.5.893 Released! - Motorola Droid Bionic

I just got a notice on my phone to update to 5.5.893. I should wait to apply forever root first, right?

If you want root!

Hmmm, I just checked & didn't have an option to update. "Your device is up to date."

Same here no update

Just checked, no update available for me. I have been keeping stock so far. If i get to .893, I can SBF back and then do the foreverroot technique, correct?

you can but it is easier if you do the foreverroot first then install the update

This for real? Anyone else see this update? I can't believe that there would not be more press on this if was actually rolling out.

No. We would see documentation from vzw. The op is either confused or lying.

It's Real!
The screen capture of the dialog is at:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HU4aB6YX0F-9C2zqoRBSRA?feat=directlink
Funny thing when I did:
find /cache -mmin -5
I found the files were actually named:
/cache/Blur_Version.5.5.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip
/cache/Blur_Version.5.5.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US.crc
I have copied these files to my sdcard, if anyone has a place to host them let me know!

From my logcat
10-30 17:59:19.468 757 1867 I WSBase : doRequest(): url: http://ws-cloud2-sdc100.blurdev.com....5.5.886.XT875.Verizon.en.US:-143928019&ssl=0

Interesting. Perhaps a vzw push mistake? Usually we see documentation before these go out.

I've tried to install twice and failed
Just to let you know, I have downloaded and attempted to install the update twice.
Once, foolishly hoping I could just update R3Blur3d, and again from close to stock.
This last time, I attempted the update from within Clockwork Recovery, and it gave me some details, the automatic update didn't:
assert failed for the file /system/build.prop, rebuild.fingerprint.
To me, it looks like, if the /system/build.prop file is modified, then this OTA won't go through.
I'm going to make sure, I'm as close to stock as possible and try again!

You would have to flash these in stock recovery on a forever rooted stock phone. Don't use clockwork.

Very Interesting
Once my phone was set totally back to stock, my phone said that there is no update available. It still says that it will not install the update zip file I have due to a problem with the build.prop file.
Originally, I was running R3Blur3rd, which had system files based upon 5.5.893. So, I'm not sure what this update notification meant.

OTA 5.5 Update is being rolled out in batches in an attempt to prevent another data outage like they had when the iPhone 4s rolled out. Fyi

When you get this flashed, please post a screen shot of your about phone settings. The 5.5 file is much larger than 5.6. The 5.6 file has a new LTE radio and webtop app nothing more. So technically, you should receive both 5.5 & 5.6 OTA.
Thanks

HOW TO: Sideloading with OTA 1.5.7 update

1) Flash the phone with the stock ULYFR_U4_1.2.6 SBF file
2) Obtain root and sideloading via aRoot
3) Update phone with the OTA OLYFR_U4_1.5.7
Once OLYFR_U4_1.5.7 is installed, you will NOT be rooted, but you will have sideloading. This should suffice for some users until root is achieved.
I personally think the OLYFR_U4_1.5.7 is worth losing root for a bit. In my own experience, the update has smoothed out the Atrix noticeably. Only time will tell.
If this helps anyone, please let me know.

My question is will the update still be there today if we flash back to 1.2.6 and reroot with aroot to get the update because I'd hate to not be able to get the update again. Like you stated, it seems to be more stable as well running a lot smoother.

I flashed back to 1.2.6 after upgrading and don't get it anymore (not even through "System updates" through Settings). So idk, wait til someone's able to extract it out of the update.zip or something I guess.
EDIT: Nvm, just tried it again and got the message (through Settings)
I got it a few times. Haven't needed to try again.

This is entirely unnecessary, as you can just install apps through adb still on 1.5.7.
Just run:
Code:
adb.exe install <package>.apk
Where <package> is the name of the app you want to install. Reflashing back to stock to install the apps is a waste of time.
You are absolutely right, if someone wants to use ADB.
Sideloading independent of a computer is important to me personally.

is there a way to sideload the apps from amazon appstore?
Haven't used Amazon. Does it have it's own installer or do you just download .apk files to you phone/sd card?

Not sure if you would receive the update via OTA with that. If you were to flash that SBF followed by aRoot, would you receive the update? If you can confirm anyone receiving the update on 1.5.2, then you SHOULD be golden.

Wrote a simple BAT file to automate to process a little...
Basically...
1) Extract the files to a directory and put the apk(s) that you wish to install/sideload in that same directory.
2) Connect your device and make sure usb debugging is enabled and all usb drivers are installed.
3) Drap and drop an APK file onto the BAT file, and it should install sucessfully onto your device. Command window will return "Sucess" if all goes well.
This is a really simple BAT file, i'm not all that great at coding or writing bat files, but I hope this helps some people. The devs might be able to write a better script. Hopefully someone will crack this update soon and figure out how to root!
Right on man! This will be great for folks when they are installing .apk files through ADB.

hmm, we were discussing it with dark. Maybe it would work if somone woudl flash a fresh 1.8.3, than skip motoblur with that combination: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027994
than obtain root, go to system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.blur.service.blur/ opean defaults.xml and edit the <string name="blur.service.ws.masterCloud">master-blur.svcmot.com</string> line to this <string name="blur.service.ws.masterCloud">master-sdc1.svcmot.com</string> than reboot, than go into gallery or something from motoblur, than click sign into motoblur and create a new account there. if it works, try going to settings -> about phone -> system updates. if it gets you the update, try clicking download, if it will download (unfortunately dark got an error), try to copy the update.zip file to your sdcard, probably you could use this way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041572
People will say why dont i do that, well the thing is im on 1.8.3 gingerblur with already signed it motoblur, which it makes kinda impossible for me to do that, i would have to sbf flash in order to do that, but than i woudl have to fix my wifi again, which would kind of take ages....
This could mean the update is coming early July, perhaps.
Doesnt this mean the update was downloaded onto your phone?
unfortunately no, the update wouldn't download due to unspecified error.
I noticed this yesterday but couldn't figure out where to change the address at. The stock rom definitely points to a different ip address than the HKTW does.
That's probably the dev server.

adb shell to your phone and run logcat or just run "adb logcat" then try to the update. i don't think it'll show you any urls or anything, but give some insight into why it's failing.

I do have some stock apps frozen. That'll screw it up?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
Unfreeze all your stock apps. You can not have stock apps frozen.
Yep, the update checks for that stuff and aborts if it finds apps missing. It also checks for changes to the build.prop file and some other things.
Interesting, this is why xda is the best, thanks

When my wife gets home I need to nano restore her stock version and take update to. 902 and hope the 4ever root works.
If it doesn't, there's already an exploit available that will let you root .902 -- Motofail. It says Droid 4 but it works for the Bionic, RAZR and Droid 3 as well.
Great thanks I am still new to the bionic. My wife did not want a custom rom so I just removed all the Verizon crap. But I did make a nano backup first. I should be good on root though used the 4ever root by dhacker29 I believe.
A small percentage of people with Forever Root still lost root in the .902 update for some reason ... no idea why. My friend at work was one of them, and I know he was Forever Rooted because I helped him do it. My Bionic kept root.

How did you go about that? Just do the OTA?
When I rooted I used dhacker root and 4ever root. Made back up and debloated my wife's phone. Today I restored her stock restore and just took the ota. After it was done I still have root. This is what I used
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825
I was having trouble getting it to take, as well. I had frozen "Music" and was having trouble getting it unfrozen. I did more than one thing at a time (not ideal for troubleshooting) so I'm not sure which fixed it.
Uninstalled Google Music, defrosted Music, froze Music, defrosted Music.
Used CWM to go into Advanced Restore and restored only a System from an older 901 backup
Now I'm on 902 and kept root (I had previously ForeverRooted).
Just another note - it took my phone about twice as long as normal to boot up after the update (it's encrypted, so it took about 4 maybe 5 minutes).
That is why personally I make a backup as soon as I am on a stock rooted rom. Then I delete instead of freezing. Then when I need to go back to stock say to flash the ota I then just restore it from recovery.

As Sam said, you're going to have to either do a full wipe and Odin back to stock or wait and update through flashing fire. Also root may not work after the update so you may want to hold off if you want to keep it, unless you're cool with being a guinnie pig [emoji4]
Good luck with root also if this is 5.1.1 update you know they probably patched the exploit.
Pull the downloaded file and upload a link so everyone has it please.
How is this being pushed out by AT&T? No release news or info from them yet from what I've been able to determine. Would be great if you could grab the files and share so DEV's could pull it apart for us.
What software version are you on now? I doubt that it's 5.1.1.

I'm on the OCE 5.0.2 build
If you guys let me know how to pull the OTA file I'll try and upload it after work.

I believe the OTA files are stored on /Cache section in the phone. You will need root access and something like File Explorer to access /Cache partition. You should be able to copy and move it to SD card so you can plug in a USB and download to a computer, then to dropbox or fileshare.
I dont know if it told you the file name, but you are looking for the 235.96MB file in that folder.

There's no large files in /cache. The fota folder is there, but just a text file in it.

Ahhh....yeah....AOE2 is the latest firmware. It's just the recent update as darrycowl suggested.

Okay. Thanks for the clarification. Any good reason to update from my current version?

If you're not having issues with what your on I personally wouldn't bother. It still has all the same issues.
Well, I set the date to December and I got this:
I also got it to trigger the arrows in upper left, with a toast message saying connecting to 'DM Server"
