WiFi and Battery & Speedtest - LG Revolution

Let me preface this with saying that I almost always have a WAP available between work and home and I have 4g turned off
A couple weeks ago I left my WIFI on. I kept it off religiously because on my last phone if it was on my battery life sucked. I took the phone off of charge about 6:30 that morning and my daughter turned wifi on the night before to stream netflix or something and i overlooked it. At about 4 i noticed it was on and looked at my battery and i had used very little battery so i kept it on. I let it go and when i had finally left work at about 7:30 that night i was down only 30%. I use my phone quite a bit, mostly talk time not much data.
I have been leaving it on since and been getting great life out of my battery.
Just wanted to pass this along.
Also 4g speeds are stupid fast where I live since ginger upgrade. Did some tests 26meg down and 21meg up. That is sic. Never got anything like that before.

To my understanding, this is as expected. I know that with wifi if you do data over wifi vs 3g/4g then it takes much less power, and wifi only takes more power as necessary if its on and scanning alot, while doing data over 3g/4g. And afaik the scan interval is turned down on revolution Tom's or the revolution in general so that doesn't take up much power anyway. I just mainly use 4g between it being the fastest internet I have anyway, wifi or not, and the wifi I'm around is bottom of the barrel either way.

Amen brother. Around here, I was getting 5-6 megs down and 2 up, in St. Louis, and yesterday I GBed, and speed tested it!!!! 25 down 20 up. I messed myself in excitement (I will not deny it!!) Battery life has been amazing. Listening to Pandora, I would burn 15 percent in an hour and a half, now it takes at least twice that time. I am giddy.

Which part of St. Louis? Up in NOCO I haven't seen much improvement. I may have to go and try speed tests in a different part of town.

If you really want to improve your battery life, download JuiceDefender Ultimate and invest the 20 minutes it takes to properly tweak all the settings.
If I don't use my phone much, I won't drop below 80% after a whole day. With heavy prolonged use I still usually get home at the end of the day with >40%.

Ok, so you aren't too far from me so the tests should be about the same, but the best I've gotten was a 6288 down and 6907 up. That's a bit better than it was but still no where near where it should be.

Speedtest
I notice that the server used can greatly affect your speeds. Houston is 70 mi from me but the Oklahoma servers actually meter faster speeds so go figure. Try switching servers and remeasure.

I'm wonder how much my speeds will jump when i GB it, or if they will. I'm on ZV4 still and regularly hit 28mb/s. I'm in the Seattle area.

I tried changing servers, I find that the Chicago or the Oklahoma servers do give me better results. And just to see, I drove over to the general area markapowell said he did his tests. I got 7.98 down and 2.76 pulling from Chicago. So I'm kind of consistent, but they are low speeds. What app does everyone use for testing? I'm using the speedtest.net app.
I'm just curious. While I get ok speeds, it seems its slower than the norm. Even my wife on her Charge (and now Bionic) was pulling faster speeds. Phone issue maybe?

It's known that different phones get different 4G speeds, even if they're on the same network, using same server, and sitting next to each other.
Theories explaining this are dime a dozen, antennas, differing hardware, different basebands, etc.
Whether one can consider this an "issue" is probably debatable... I'm sure Verizon doesn't consider it one.

Anyone in LA?

I've noticed DRAMATIC worsened signal and slower data speeds since HSPA+ got turned on. The whole reason I switched to T-mobile has turned against me, I now experience the connectivity issues from holding the phone that were previously non existent to me and I'm almost always on EDGE. If it does connect to HSPA its unusably slow whereas it used to be close to 2mb speeds prior to their "upgrade" anyone else experiencing this?

Yes I was near Beverly hills today off the 10 and I particularly had zero 3g, lost service completely, then it stayed on edge. This area never did this before. I bet they are doing network maintenance or something. Which area are you having problems?
Hopefully that's what the issue is, maintenance. I'm in downtown-hollywood most of the time and have always had great service, until the pay few days, always dropping calls, slow data, etc...

YES same exact thing with my buddy's t-mo N1 when we were downtown.
Compared each others device (got an att vers.) he didnt even have access to maps. But he's been crying about it for a while now, even in Santa Monica he would have some reception trouble and connecting to EDGE.
Last time he told me he found a work-around and got a widget turning the thing on and off to reset but I honestly don't believe that's a workaround..
maintenance, yeah better chance. found an article stating t-mo working on 4G, hopefully itll make you feel better. Try and keep your phone nice and clean b/c hopefully the N1 is rockin by then.
t-mo to 4g maintenance.
Other cities have reported similar issues while upgrading to hspa + so I'm confident it'll get better, i mean before this is was fantastic for meso I don't really see how it would get worse

[Q] Is my phone really defective

im gonna take my thrill back today and get a new one! I am having trouble with the battery as many people are but I dont know if it is worse than others. I unhooked it a few minutes ago and it went from 99 percent down to 90 in about 3-4 minutes and down to 80 in another 10 minutes and im not even sure what is running in the background because I thought I had an app killer installed. anyway the other problem is that I cannot get an internet connection at all unless I am on wifi. I have unlimited data and should be able to use programs like facebook even at the university but I cannot. Does anyone think I am doing the right thing by returning the phone? sorry about the long rant
Sounds like you have a bad battery. When I first got my Nexus S I had the same problem replaced that battery through att and it has been fine ever since. Also I have noticed that some task killers cant remember witch ones in specific hurt battery life. I would take it back for a new one may as well replace the whole device if you can.

The data thing definitely sounds like a bug. The battery on the other hand is normal on some new Thrills. After a week or so it should settle in and battery life gets better over time.

Yeah, if you first got the phone it takes a few cycles before battery starts to improve. But it seems pretty bad, i would return it since you have the oppurtunity.

Thank you for the replies, I have had this phone for about 3 weeks and I keep it plugged in at night through usb but I also have to connect it for a few hours in the daytime as well. I havent had a chance to return it but I may do so today although the wifi issue seems to be working now. maybe the At&t Network was down?

A note on the battery issue? What's the signal strength like where you live? The data signal in my house is so bad that if I forget to turn wifi on after getting home from work my battery will drain close to 40% over night. My wife's Captivate does the same thing. If the signal is weak the phone will constantly poll for a stronger signal.
All that aside I would definitely still take advantage and seek a replacement while its free. If you still have issues atleadt you'll know its something correctable and not the phone.

The 4G bug

I've heard of this and it finally hit me about two weeks ago. After about a week of being on unofficial .905 with a motofail root my 4G stopped. I tried progressive measures until finally just doing a factory reset and flashing stock .902. After that still no 4G. Then I let the phone stock update to .905, still no 4G (i mean literally never and I live right next to a strong Verizon 4G tower.
After the .905 update i tried pulling the sim and then rebooting, changing Android ID with Titanium, then reinstalling sim while subsequent reboot was ongoing. After doing this twice I got 4G with full bars for about ten minutes before going back to 3G. After that I could never get 4G again no matter what.
So last night I updated to the ICS 33 build hoping for a change. Nothing. I did a clear data and change Android ID, pulled sim a million different ways. It's just not going to happen for me. This phone has never been wet, abused, or had a custom ROM, btw.
So i called Verizon this morning and here is where my question comes in. I was honest with then on all that I've done to the phone and their basic response was: "we know the Bionic has an LTE issue and will send you another free at no cost right now." That's pretty awesome, but I'm now worrying about protecting the phone from losing LTE ability again. I really like the ICS leak and want to install it as soon as I get the new phone, but I don't want anymore LTE problems.
Are there any strong theories on why this happens? Anything to avoid? I'm leaning toward thinking it may be a hardware thing affecting a certain batch and then convoluted by the refurb tendencies of the day. Does that sound logical?
On a side note, if anyone has something they want tested let me know. I can do it to the 4G crapped phone before returning.
I had an issue with one Bionic where the 4G drivers kept disappearing, and then finally one day never came back. They replaced my phone. It happened once on my new phone when I first had it, but hasn't occurred since. I personally think the 4G radio gets burned out and shuts down, but have no way of proving it.
Insane! Just got done doing done housework and now i have LTE; the usual 4-5 bars.
I am now thoroughly confused. It hasn't worked once in over a week.
So now i get to see how the battery on 2233 holds up with LTE. Running 905 with 3G only was a treat in that one respect. I was getting 33 hours typically. That's with checking news and Facebook like 30 times a day, at least a call an hour, steady Wordfued games, Bluetooth/GPS on all the time.

on the phone he didnt know anything about known issues.. but.. he thought my area had a saturation issue.
I hadnt seen this thread before just now. All the pieces come together.
Im itching to move to ICS but am concerned about GPS reliability as i use mine for geocaching.
Im running the .230 leak still and have no issues at all. I havent moved to any newer leak for that reason. Im stable and everything seems to work.

4G is not a Bionic issue
Verizon can say what they want - but the 4G issue is localized.
I travel a lot - from VA to PA frequently, and out to Denver regularly. A couple months ago 4G just went away (note that Richmond and Denver both have extensive 4G coverage).
I can get 4G in Newport News, VA, but not in Richmond, Denver, or anwhere between Richmond and PA (like DC or any of Eastern MD, or Delware). These are all places where I used to get 4G consistently.
I've tried multiple reboots. Nope - only place I now get 4G is Newport News. I also have firends/coworkers on Verizon (my company uses it), and NO ONE can get 4G in Richmond any more, on any phone.
My 4G cut out this morning in a certain area...I typically get 4G in that area and it is on an extended 4G coverage area. I noticed my phone lost 4G rather than switch over to 3G. I saw it go from blank to 1X to 3G and never recovered to 4G. I am currently in a 3G area atm and won't know if something's changed til i go home where I will pass thru the extended 4g then 4g.
In Boston I frequent a few areas and for over 2 WEEKS 4G would not function near one of my haunts. It used to be 4 bars and had decent speeds, then all of a sudden whenever I was in the area my phone would keep switching from 4G to 3G, but if I walked a couple blocks down the street I had a full 4G signal again and data worked perfectly. After the first week the problem became even worse, the phone would get stuck with a white 4G symbol and would keep toggling from white to blue but never got a connection and thus the only way I could use data in the area was to use wireless. Again if I walked a couple blocks down the street I had a full 4G signal and perfect data. Then one day the problem just went away.
I've heard similar stories from others around the country so it appears Verizon is having serious localized issues with some of the LTE towers. This happened in late June through the first week of July and I haven't experienced the problem since.
I should note I also did have the issue where 4G stopped working completely when I installed one of the leaked GB builds and the solution in that case was pulling the SIM card, rebooting, then replacing the SIM card and all worked again after about 10 minutes.
currently in middle of Fresno, CA and no 4g...
I had major 4G issues with my Thunderbolt.... I just bought a Bionic and now I am having the same issues.
Luke
I rebooted my phone in a 4G area this morning. The 4G icon popped up briefly and then quickly disappeared to the 3G icon. I never had 4G problems before and now this is happening. I am annoyed but not to the point where I need to switch phones.

ahaha me too, I can pull about 10 1/2 hours with 4 hours screen time and that's about as good as it gets, but that's with playing music and web browsing a bit as well.
If my phone can last me from the time I take it off the charger in the morning to the time I put it back on when I go to bed, which it usually does, I'm content. And that's with me messing with it all day, and at least 6 hours of streaming music.
I can get a day and a half out of mine. That being said the half day part doesn't do me a lick of good so he gets charged every night regardless.

I just posted this because I found it a bit weird, she has been using it quite a bit, she has used 93 minutes off our plan as of this morning and that is in just a week.
EDIT: She is CONSTANTLY deleting running apps so that is probably a good portion of it.
Also, one more thing, in her settings under about it says "Hardware Version 0004" what is this and does any of your devices say different?
Thanks,

YAY! Screenshots!
Here you go!
3 days is far from the norm, and the battery monitor is EASILY fooled, all it takes is a partial charge. My girlfriend's mom just got the galaxy the other day and I went over to help her with her car BT, took a quick glance at the battery monitor for kicks and it said she was on something absurd like 5 days and I knew something was off. Turns out she didn't charge her phone at night, just sporadically during the day, and it had never charged to 100%.
I'm getting around 14 hours until I hit 20%, and this is with HEAVY usage...taking pictures, using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blinkfeed, playing games, etc, all on 4G. So the battery life IS pretty nice.
good here

I charge my phone every night so I don't know exactly how long it'll go, but I think I've only ever dropped below 50% once, and that was the first day, and HTC Connect was acting all screwy. Had used over 60% in the monitor. Love it!

The two things the One needs

1) a microsd slot, because what happens if your phone craps? BOOM everything lost right there. Its happened to my sisters iphone. "Blahblahblah just back it up everyday blablahblah" be realistic bro. BUT!!!! The fact that its otg capable is a good thing because that means we can use usb sticks right? Idk, I'm coming from the samsung epic 4g
2) A CHIN!! I can't be the only one who thinks this phone should've been the return of the chin? It looks so sexy, like an upgraded hero, a chin would've made it even sexier imo!
What do y'all think about the chin?

Hey Brian, just as an FYI, I called Sprint yesterday to complain about the lack of anything in Central Florida, and two things came up. First, I received a $15.00 credit, and second, they're saying that (this is obvious) they're working on LTE in the area. Taken with a grain of salt, they said they're anticipating a release this summer for LTE in our area. Fingers crossed.

I hear what you're saying. They told me there is work being done on the towers out off Sandpiper and that could be reason I'm having problems, but I'm all the way over by Home Depot and Lowe's. I can sit in my house on Lake Anne and get an LTE signal, but it bounces in and out. So, pointless pretty much. They had no response for when I'm at my office in South Orlando.

I can sit in my house on Lake Anne and get an LTE signal, but it bounces in and out. So, pointless pretty much. They had no response for when I'm at my office in South Orlando.

There is no offical LTE in Orlando and that they are doing full network upgrades... This requires them to screw with the towers for some time.
As for the comment about "I don't see any tower work"... Most of the tower work is done at the base. The only tower upgrade is when they install Network Vision (replace the copper up to the cell with fiber and replace the base modules). So even when they are doing a network vision, the only "visible" upgrade is when they are replacing the copper. http://newsroom.sprint.com/press_kits.cfm?presskit_id=19
Just be happy you can get LTE anywhere in an unofficial market... I am in Tallahassee and we still barely have 3g eventho we are on the LTE rollout list.

That's all fine and dandy that they're working on the upgrades now and that's why the speeds are slow. But for as long as I can remember, I've never had a good speed with Sprint. I'd hit a spot once in a while that would put me close or over 1mbps, but every other time, it's literally below .5mbps. It's ridiculous.

That is about standard for half max distance from the tower... The theoretical Rev. A high is based upon a high SNR (that was never really achievable at distance with copper).
really? before they started working on lte I always got fantastic speeds. When I got my OG Evo I pulled 2-3 mbps on 3g, and 5-20 on wimax. I really only get pissed when they are working on towers in my area, then my connection drops to .2-.5mbps, but I stay because after its done Im back to the good old 3g speeds, and 10-30 mbps on LTE. I love sprint, and most of all I love my unlimited data. I know youve heard it 1000 times, but hold on, its getting a lot better.

That is max burst (not sustainable). There is a lot to it, but one of the main things is degredation of the SNR (which is why they switched from copper to fiber). Also channel interference. Most users will experience between 500 - 1000 kbit sustained speeds. You are also limited by the reverse link when submitted requests.
All I got to say is if the reason my speeds are so bad is because they are working on towers in my area. Then it's been one hell of a process upgrading 1 single tower for over 3 years.
