[Q] No USB connectivity, is SPH-P100 recoverable? [Sprint][CDMA][bricked][noob] - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Back-story: A few days ago (okay, maybe two weeks, I've been lazy), I put my Tab into my backpack after using it all day at work. Everything was fine. The following morning, I pulled it out, and noticed something weird. The YouTube icon had removed itself from the homescreen, and almost everything I tried was simply unresponsive, or crashed instantly.
I rebooted the Tab, and then realized that it wasn't online either, claiming that it was in airplane mode. Couldn't seem to change that. Searching for "stuck in airplane mode" revealed a few threads saying to remove the SD card and reboot, which did nothing for me, and a few threads saying to reflash the modem.
So, I followed the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275031 and it hung up on the modem step. For like an hour. I finally gave up, rebooted the phone, and tried again. This time, it hung up at Modem again, I walked away after half an hour, and when I came back, it was sitting at the phone-exclamation-point-computer display on the phone, and the computer indicating failure.
Ever since then, no matter what buttons I mash, I can't make it enumerate as a USB device of any sort. Half the time I can't even make it turn on; it'll show the exclamation-point display only when plugged into the charger.
EXCEPT ONCE. Odin saw it, I smacked "Start", and Odin immediately failed. If I can get it to do that again, I'll jot down the exact error message.
So, right now: It's got enough sense to show the phone-exclamation-point-computer (does this string of hieroglyphs have a name?), but it won't show up on USB. What next?

[Q] Broken SDcard [help] Only Download mode?

Edit: So further research has led me to the conclusion that my internal sdcard is dead.
I've got what seems to be an odd issue, did some searching, can't find anything similar.
I've been playing with JPK for the last week or so. Tonight, answered a call, put my phone down for... ~5 min, came back it was stuck with the screen off and the capacitive buttons lit up. Poked at it, messed around with all the buttons for about 5 min, gave up, pulled the battery.
Tried booting, It would go past the initial Galaxy S screen and then black. Tried that a couple more times, then tried clearing cache and factory reset from Recovery mode. Still no dice.
Ok, go on computer, grab JM8 (first firmware thread at the time), flash, wait, boots, gives me an error about unaccessible SD card. Change a few settings, sign into Gmail, pull/insert the SD card a couple times. Give up, try rebooting.
Since then I haven't gotten past the initial loading screen again.
I've now tried flashing JM6 (used for almost a month before JPK), JM8, JM9, JPK. All with the same results. The only thing I haven't tried is getting a new 512 pit on the off chance mine is corrupt.
The odd part is that I ONLY have download mode. I can't get into recovery, or all the way into Android (or even the animated S screen).
Also odd, if i plug it in while off, the battery icon never fully boots. It shows up (empty, just the shape, no green even though the phone should have at least 50% battery), gives me the little fan symbol, then vanishes, repeat.
So I'm pretty much out of ideas. I might try flashing from an 803 pit tomorrow, on the off chance that will fix it.
Either way, I'm confused. Suggestions?
Try returning the phone to samsung
Sent from my GT-I9000
I had the same problem with my i9000m... Looks like the only option right now is to send it back through Bell. Took a couple of weeks for mine to get repaired.

[Q] Woke up to a less functional Captivate..

Long time lurker, first time poster.
I woke up today to see my captivate screen showing blank screen (active black screen with buttons lighted up) being unresponsive. It was on it's charger from the night.
I pulled the battery to shut it down. It rebooted. I thought nothing about it until I tried to use it about an hour later.
I have had it on stock Froyo, with no root. Never have flashed any other ROM besides updates through kies.
Problems and things I've noticed so far:
No puzzle lock screen. Can't find it under "set screen lock". Only None, Pattern, PIN, Password available.
Home button and search button do not function(they light up like they are pressed, but not action occurs in any apps or home screen).
No data. Usually i'd see edge or 3g, but I have no data connection.
Text messages wiped. None available through "Messages"(though call log shows history of messages).
Keyboard was on stock android rather than swype(since changed back to swype).
Holding power button only shows "Power off" option. Before there was at least Airplane mode.
GPS was on(I hardly ever use it).
Location settings seemed to be default("use wireless networks" was unclicked)
Most other settings/app data seems fine.
About phone info:
Model Number: SAMSUNG-SGH-i897
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: I897UCKB1
Kerner version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.UCKB1

Other related things:
Day or two before I received a text message from AT&T to download Kies and use Froyo(Don't remember exact wording, lost the text message, but something to the effect it looked like a mass mailing text to update to Froyo using Kies). I was already on Froyo(flashed as soon as I found out it was available few months back).
I also got a text message about downloading their at&t app to manage my minutes and pay my bill(also already had that app).
My Captivate would randomly freeze/unresponsive a few times, but I didn't think much of it.
Google Music app seemed to randomly start playing the audio file i paused(just in my pocket, or once when i put headphones in to make a call).
Searching the forums, haven't found too much related.
One thread suggested using "home switcher", which I have tried(both Froyo and regular versions, though can't press home button for Froyo version). Neither seems to know what my default Home App is, but it only sees TwLaucher(I only have TouchWiz).
Tried installing an alternative launcher(ADW,LauncherPro), still no home/search button.
I'm without my computer for the weekend, so I can't backup my files and reset to factory just yet.
Anyone have any thoughts to fix this or know what may have went wrong?
I might finally make the jump to a Custom ROM if it'll fix this.
Yes, you should either flash a custom rom or do a factory reset. I will say an event similar to this, also involving text messaging, is what made me make the leap to Assonance, and then Serendipity, and I haven't looked back.
Sent from a state of Serendipity
At the least, try a master reset.
You're not alone....
Two Saturdays ago, I woke up, grabbed my phone to see what time it was and my phone was going haywire. It as blinking, flickering and rebooted on its own a couple of times...without me touching it.
When I DID manage to access the phone after a reboot there was no connection. I couldn't call, send/receive texts, nor could I access most of the features (during one of the haywire moments, the phone popped open my "Gallery" folder and started running a slideshow and then shut down. Again, all without me touching it!) There was a distinct blue circle with a slash where the 3G bars used to be on the top right corner of the phone.
I did a factory reset and didn't help. Wiped everything off the phone, but the device was still going nuts.
I got the phone in mid-December and have absolutely pampered that thing. Never dropped, never scratched, never abused. So I was surprised when I took it into the AT&T replacement center that the lady told me that my battery was wet! Not the phone, but the battery. Those two white-that-turn-pink indicators are so close to each other on the phone that I can't see how one gets wet while the other doesn't.
So they give me a new phone. One thing I noticed right away was that my data usage went WAY UP with the new device. To put it in perspective, I used 100 mb of data in 29 days and 64mb IN ONE DAY with my new phone. I thought it may be a one-time fluke, but it's not. I am only 10 days into my new month and am already at 164mb out of 200mb in my plan. I have NEVER used 164 mb in the 6 months previous, let alone in 10 days.
Fun's not over yet. I noticed a lot of crashes and "Force Closes" with the new phone too. I didn't even have any apps downloaded yet and things were still crashing. Last night I pull my phone out to take a picture and...nope. Screen was all kinds of whacked out and it crashed. And still does now every time I open the camera function. I managed to get in camera mode fast enough to do a reset, but didn't work. The screen is fine otherwise. So looks like I'm back to A&T tomorrow for another round.
I'm glad you posted this, cause the same morning all this happened -- literally, within 10 mins of me waking up -- my computer (brand new - 2 days old) went berserk and shut off and my stereo started flipping channels, turning the volume, treble, bass up and down..BY ITSELF without me touching ANYTHING! It was pretty freaky. I wondered if I was struck by lightning the night before.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
I was finally able to get back home today and do a factory reset. This (somewhat) solved the problem. Everything is mostly back to normal(home button and search button work on home screen, lock screen is there).
Lost a couple of game saves as I had no method to pull a save file(was doing adb pull on some known file locations).
I did run adb logcat before resetting, and home button and search button seemed to trigger something, just not follow through(Search button did work in a card game as a forward button and home button worked in the kies app to exit, just never as a return to home button in apps).
I'll be looking to root and flash a custom ROM, especially root so I can do a proper backup in case anything like this happens again.
I just want to say thank you posting in q&a and doing research before and after your flashing started. Then searched after your problem. You're a new member of a breed that are few and far between. I will hit your thanks when I get on my computer, app doesn't have it. You will go far here.

[Q] Is my motherboard done, and am I screwed?

Two hours spent scouring the Net has produced no satisfactory answers. To summarize: my phone is unresponsive, and I assume it's because I've dropped it too many times.
I (and my two small children) have, admittedly, been pretty rough on my Captivate. Last night, after (accidentally) dropping it for the 37824962nd time, I picked it up and plugged it in to speakers. The song played for 2 seconds before the phone cut off. I tried to start it up. The AT&T screen flashed, and then it went black again. I did this a couple times before finally assuming my phone was dead. I plugged it in, and the charging screen came up. It most certainly was not dead. I tried to start it again. Same thing. Except this time, instead of going back to the charging screen, it went black again.
Vol up/down and power does nothing.
Vol up/down and plug into USB does nothing.
My computer does not recognize the existence of my phone. At all. My phone will not turn on. I've taken the battery out a million times, let it sit all day -- no dice. Yes, I've already downloaded Kies and updated my phone a few months ago. (Since then, nothing but HEADACHES.)
Question 1: Is my motherboard, as I suspect, crap?
Question 2: Is there any way to save my music, my pictures, etc etc that I hadn't yet transferred to my SD card?
Warning: I'm computer literate, but I have hardly any experience with smartphones beyond texting, surfing, listening to music, and fooling with apps, but I pick things up quick.
Also: My phone has been taking longer to start up since the update. The speakerphone goes out constantly but comes back on if you tap the phone. It immediately closes the dialer and messaging upon opening the majority of the time. I'm so exhausted, and I've got a month left on this stupid contract (after this, I quit AT&T), and I seriously just want the pics of my kids that I hadn't had a chance to save.
Check my sig link for Linux mode detector. Idk if the link is still good, as I've not checked them lately. It well require Linux, but will tell you if your hard bricked

[Q] My Rogers Captivate only boots to Download Mode.

Alright, day 10 of my epic tale...
Handset: Samsung Captivate SGH-I896 (Rogers)
Computer: (MacBook Pro, WinXP 32bit, Win7 64bit)
Really the story starts about 10 months ago. Captivate boots up one day after a night of charging only to display "Downloading Do Not Turn of Target!!!". No matter what boot method of key combos will change this. Well the phone found its way into the junk drawer and forgotten about. Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago, my current fruit based named device type 4 receives a large blow from my 2 year old causing its all glass front and back to be unusable, parts are now on order. I look into the junk drawer to find a suitable interim replacement. I find my 'ol Samsung Captivate, put the battery in, plug it in and BOOM, it boots just the first day out of the box. Two days later, back to "Downloading Do Not Turn of Target!!!"... Damn. Everything I have tried from my 96+ hours of trial and error has led me here to post. ODIN, Heimdall, Kies, OneClick this, and OneClick that, nothing.
I have had the phone boot up properly twice in ~10 days, the back to Download Mode.
[TL;DR] I'm a n00b, every attempt that you can image and a few you can't. Samsung Captivate will NOT exit from Download Mode.
Thank you for your time,
Nate.

I really don't know that I have a good answer for you but first of all since you've indicated that you've tried several methods including one-clicks... did anything that you tried to flash show in the program you were using that the time that it went through and flashed?

No program was able to detect the phone, only one PC was able to detect that something was pluged in (WinXP 32bit), all attempts with various drivers did not change this. However once in a blue moon the phone boots just fine, battery charges I can sync with Mac & PC. This tells me that the general condition of the hardware is good.

So when the phone is in download mode and you plug it in via usb the computer doesn't recognize it at all? It's not listed on device manager as it should be or unknown?
I could be way off base but it almost sounds to me like your usb port is going bad. If it's shorting out in there it could explain why it's constantly going into download mode. And why every once in a while it actually boots and functions as normal.

The USB on the phone does charge the batter, if I leave it plugged in and unplug it, it will sit in download mode until the battery runs dry.

[Q] Hard briked S3 mini out of nowhere

I have the feeling I'm going to get repetitive here guys, but I've been reading the troubleshooting threads for over an hour and couldn't find an answer to help me.
Last saturday I was to lazy to move from the couch, so I watched as my S3 Mini ran out of battery. I got the "phone is turning off" screen as usual. Later I went to bed, but as I needed my alarm to go off in the morning I tried turning it on again, and nothing* happened. Plugged it on the wall, nothing*. Replaced the battery, nothing*. Gave it a good half hour plugged, and as you can guess, nothing*.
* when I say nothing, I mean it won't light up, won't vibrate, won't wink for me, won't load any kind of error, it's actually just like if you were trying to turn on a phone without any battery connected, no grasp of life comes from its poor soul.
The only moment I could see some action on the device is when I tried connecting it on the PC a few hours ago, as it installed drivers to Windows. Right after installing the drivers however, it won't show in the file explorer. I've tried to detect it with a few development tools such as ORT and Odin and there was no sucess either. Download or Recover mode will not work as well.
One thing I think worth mentioning, is that ever since I rooted it a couple of years ago, whenever I tried to recharge it while it was off, the standard "green charging battery" would never appear. What would appear on the screen was a freezed loading icon (the one that keeps roling again and again, but frozen). This particular issue never came off, even reseting it or installing new ROMs.
I always used Maclaw's, some of the latest 4.x, because I tought the 5.x was to heavy for the s3 minis.
I've read some about USB JIGs and stuff, but what makes me very curious is what the heck?! The phone was working just fine, the battery runs out and I have a brick? Is this possible? Can anyone tell me any work around?
I apologize for possible grammar mistakes.

try to plug in the phone into charger & leave it there like 20 mins or more. battery loads then.
then try access samsung download mode, if you cant the phone is probably useless (brick for ever) because itslike mthe last standing thing.
& sorry i say that but thats typically samsung behaviuor. there allways this kind of threads in the samsung forums of xda... other manufacturer can mostly be restored or atleast you know what make it dead.
Exactly the same problems happening to me.
This is my thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-mini/help/sgs3-mini-dead-t3085031
Can you try to follow what appears on this link? (I can't by now because my PC is broken)
I think won't do nothing because you won't be able to access to the recovery mode on android, as me, but to try...

Hi there,
Thank you for your interest but I have passed this point already. Tried a brand new battery I had laying down in the drawer (which was fully charged with an universal charger) and there is no answer to any attempt of turning it on. Via recovery, download or normal boot.

Hello there,
I'm sorry to hear I'm not the only one affected by this bug (lets call it a bug). This shows there is a lack of concern from Samsung on dealing with this issues, and thus we see that old programmed obsolescence.
I will try that later on the weekend, and I come back here with an report.
Cheers

this guide useless for you. how u want flash things with odin if u cant enter download mode at all??
im really sorry for you that this phone is dead. just can give you 1 advice, dont buy samsung in future.
I have been repaired my phone successfully!!!
I just needed to change two capacitors on its motherboard, and that's it.
Here the video where I have found the info and how to do that. It's in Spanish but easy to understand for you I think. But if you need some help, send me a PM.
can you take a picture from the location of the 2 capasitors and the types of it
Hi everyone.
I have some news. It took me a while but I followed CrashOverride93's advice on that video. It actually solved one issue, as I now can turn it on, but now I have a second problem, I'm stuck on a boot loop, with acess to Download mode ONLY. No recovery.
Considering where my issue started, and where I am now, I have tried the following:
- Flashed via Odin stock ROM, kernel;
- flashed Wipe;
- flashed PARAM;
- three button combo.
So far I couldn't get it pass the boot loop. Any thoughts?
