[Q] can i replace my g2x? - Dell Streak 7

hey guys! so i know that there has been chatter about the streak 7 having a dialer built in. however it doesnt work. i do currently have a g2x and love it BUT if i can get the streak 7 to have a reliable dialer and phone features id part with the g2x.
my g2x is rooted and running swift star 2.3.3 so i have no issue with rooting the dell when it arrives.
any feedback would be awesome!!!

anyone? 26 views and no response...

Well the s7 cant make calls at all, unless you want to count voip type calls, there's some work on attempting to get normal cellular calling on it, but do not buy it with the expectation of that ever working.
If it does who knows how long it will take, it could be a day, it could be a year. If you need a phone this isnt one, treat it as a tablet as that's exactly what it's ment to do.

so is it safe to say that there is an active forum member working on the phone functionality for this device? Or is this dead in the water? like i said i do have my g2x and love it but it would be so nice just to use one item.
id be willing to donate to the member that get the phone function working and is stable!

dj_steve and chrisrotolo are looking into it, but they have not made much progress in a while because it's not exactly an easy thing to do.
if it's even possible with the hardware, I cant really expect it to every be fully stable as it's essentially a hack. Just the way it works

i know its no easy thing to get done on this device. i just hope that it can be done. thats all. i will keep my fingers crossed and hopefully something will happen. lol
till then ill enjoy it as a tablet and nothing more...

.. Is the milestone ... Outdated ?

i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!

Dell just told me Honeycomb is on hold due to issues with the 2.2.2 OS.

Hey all just wanted to relay what Dell just told me in regards to honeycomb. Seems when they were testing it or so, customers had device freezes and issues due to the upgrade process and so. Thus Honeycomb seems to be on hold. Not sure if it will happen at all now. Issue was for Streak 5 and 7 she said.
Kinda sucks in a way... just waiting for the custom hc rom to be fully set. =D

So, because there might be issues with 2.2.2, they won't upgrade to 3.1/3.2?
Sense. Dell makes none.
Yea basically, seems people upgrading had issues that caused so many streaks to be sent back in. Also we already know from the honeystreak rom that it changes the bootloaders and so differently then how 2.2.2 runs. (And not like the Honeycomb rom is fully complete, think about it, orig it had sleep issues)
Now if they would only release a sdk and let ppl here at xda get it working, problem would be solved. Either way it sucks that for us EARLY adopters with a promise of honeycomb, are getting screwed.
honeystreak
well i have browsing these forums for a little while and i love all the info available to every one now that thats out the way has ever officialy anouced honeycomb for the streak 7 ?
The worst part is that, if this is true, we are using a ported version (Honeystreak) when there is a version designed for us, already made, sitting around on some computer at Dell because of flash issues. They should just release it, and let XDA-developers members figure out how to get it on.
I am considering buying Streak 7, and just called Dell CS. I was told that upgrade is scheduled for the end of next month, although the rep would not tell me exactly what version is going to come out (if at all). Take this for what it is worth. Just another rumor.
End of the month would be awesome... but honestly, I really dont see them doing it. I mean we have waited for so long. WOULD be nice.. Im just gonna keep supporting and soon maybe donate a lil to Steve for his efforts to get it working perfectly.
That change of bootloaders shouldn't have any effect. Come on I've flashed over a dozen ROM and kermal combinations on my phone. Its just a matter of getting the stuff to the folks here on xda to get it of work.
I enjoy my DS7 and with some of the tweaks of performs pretty well but an upgrade shouldn't be rocket science..oh wait we're talking about Dell
Sent from my Dell Streak 7 using XDA Premium App
One difference, for the MOST part, us XDA Regulars who have been on more then one section of the forums for devices. "WE" know how to do things. We know also how to recover from a failure, or least understand the restore process from guides we read. Its always a risk what we do to our devices.
Now take the avg joe.. one wrong thing, every device gets sent back in to be fixed. That seems to be the issue here.
nice
for the 5and 7?
i just talked with some people from dell and they said that it would come "soon"
which mean they probably have no idea but soon is good enough i guess^_^
Well considering how long Dell is dragging their asses, I'm quite glad DJ steve is working so vigorously on things. I'd hate to wait on them for too long. I really don't have to, now that the sleep of death and app drawer problems are fixed, I'm quite happy with my streak 7 running RC3. I don't really use bluetooth now, but I plan to in the future. Hopefully that will be working soon too eh? If Dell does actually release a version (ever) I hope it will boost DJ steve's project ten fold!
bluetooth works fine over here on rc3- just doesn support handsfree profile probably due to the lack of phone support.
Yea Streak 5 and 7, thats what she said. I was thinking the same thing since 5 isnt dual core.. I do believe her on that dell has too many returns tho.. Almost feels like they want the streak to die quietly... =/
I don't know what is going on. It worked 2.2.2. But everytime I go to turn it on it just unchecks the box like it did nothing.

[DEV][WIP] CyanogenMod 7 for the LG Revolution (working 2d/3d acceleration!)

No, it's not out yet-- but I do have it booting, and with working touchscreen support
Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnRlyMZzdT0
New video:: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d4pZXyayts
That's about it right now.
Things left:
Mobile Voice
3G Data
4G Data / Voice
Audio
Front Camera
Back Camera
GPS
Bluetooth
Wifi
DSP support for video encode/decode
Vibrate/Notification LED
As I get things working, I'll update this list.
My first priority is wifi, then mobile voice, then 3g data, then vibrate/notification LED.
After that, I'll get GPS working (not hard) then rear camera.
Things that'll probably not happen in CM7 for a while:
Front camera
4G Voice
4G Data
Anything to do with 4G will be VERY tough, since I don't have LG's kernel sources, and I'm no RIL reverse engineer... Any help in this matter is appreciated!
You are the man!
Anxiously awaiting!

So, does the release of the kernel change your thoughts on 4G? What about the issues with 3G data lag? Not pressing, just curious. I know with the release of the kernel you aren't going to have a lot of time on your hands to get sidetracked

We were on IRC before when I posted that link. He said 4G data/voice shouldn't be a problem now.
The kernel gives the information on how to communicate with the radio
Pretty much, from what I understand, all of those "not for a while" items. Are now going to be in the first build of CM7 for the REVOLUTIOnnnnn-tionn-tion-tion

Hey Thecubed, is there a particular reason you went with ADW Launcher as the... er... Launcher? What would keep you from using HeLauncher as the default? Any chance of getting a Samsung style launcher and icons?
And I think its almost been a week, and the phone is still running smooth. I did the stat bar cleaner, thanks MT. And the battery life is stellar.\
Thanks again. I am working overtime so I can get you a sizeable dony.

The kingpins of CM7 decided to use ADW.Launcher since its dev open-sourced the launcher. It makes customizations very easy to make. You can always pull it out with TB once you've got your launcher of choice up and running.
Cubed - I was so excited when I saw this thread pop up the other day. I have my Revolution coming in the mail hopefully sometime this afternoon, and I will definitely be on the IRC once it gets in. I won it in a contest, so I won't feel bad if I end up bricking it, especially because I have an upgrade in September.
And as soon as my finances allow, I will most certainly be submitting a donation. Thank you for your support!
I will say though, I just switched to this Fascinate I'm using currently a month ago, and our CM7 code finally got merged upstream, so I'm definitely gonna miss fully-functional GB, but I'm sure you'll have it running smoothly in no time!
Totally double-posting here, but I have my phone activated and running. 4G is friggin' SWEET!
Anywho, if you need any logcats or anything at all that's within my practical ability (I'm willing to flash just about anything since I didn't pay a dime for this phone, and can do any number of logcats/dmesg you need), just let me know. I'll pop onto the IRC from time to time just to check, but if you ever need someone in a hot moment, direct message me and I'll be glad help!
any chance we will see a alpha release to test out for you? would be ballin!

I suspect another reason ADW was incorporated is because it's one of the only open source launchers. That comes without the possible legal ramifications of packaging someone elses work in your creation.
I also wouldn't mind being a testcase, if there is a use for another one.
Right now I'm reworking all the init scripts that LG has written and consolidating them into the cyanogenmod style of a single "init.bryce.rc" initscript.
As I'm doing that, I'm looking for referenced binaries and crossreferencing that list with the list of binaries that cyanogenmod builds (to see what binaries are LG-specific and what are stock Android). After I find the binaries, I am hexdumping each one to find out which libraries they import, and adding those to the cyanogenmod build directory also.
LG really really really needs to write better scripts. Their init process is all over the map, and half of the stuff in the init script isn't even for our device! It references dev platforms and other stuff that really should be trimmed before releasing to the public.
Anyway, in regards to testers, I actually have a device now (my very own device! but no service haha) so I'm able to do testing on my own for intermediate builds. When I release a milestone build (I'd consider wifi and 3d accelerator a milestone build) I'll release it via PM.
I don't want to make the test builds public because I worry that it'd cause problems with people not reading the "WARNING! THIS DOESNT WORK RIGHT!" and coming back saying they bricked their phones.
However, as soon as I have something to show, I'll make a video
Woohoo! That's exciting. I miss stable CM7 so much. It was flawlesson my trusty Incredible, just getting to stable on the Fascinate, and now being started from scratch here.
If you ever need any help, Cubed, I'm game. I would have no qualms with it. I'm available at nearly any moment and always have a computer nearby for logcats and d/kmesg dumps. Plus, I have full services 3/4G and wifi all around me at almost all times.
I'd love to be able to help the community out, even if it's only by flashing and giving error logs.
I noticed when peeking around in the system that things were a little messy too. The build.prop is kinda iffy and their lack of an organized boot animation is annoying. It's like being neat wasn't a concern at all. Seems like they were in a hurry.

Any new ROMS

Any new ROMS in the works besides what we have on here on the Dev Forum? Ive tried them all i like them all just asking if we have more coming?
Lmao really? Do you even realize how lucky we are to have what we have already for this extremely outdated phone? No we probably wont have any new roms to try. Sorry.

Matt,
Are you ok? Is this the real MattCrystal? I was expecting something a little different from you considering how big of a no-no it is to ask about ETA's. I guess it's not an ETA question though, just a "is anyone going to get off of their lazy butts and create something new for free because I'm bored with all of the choices we do have". You must be taking an anger management class. Let me guess, you were finally able to flash WildHeroc.
I'm really amazed at what we do have considering this is a legacy device and most of the people creating these roms don't even have their heroes activated, they do it out of their love for the hero, technology, and the challenge. We are limited due to our arm6 processor and our low memory. But we have everything but MIUI.
Im very excited and pleased that we have any ROMS for our Hero i was just wondering if anything else is cooking. Im sure there is trust me

Matt,

Yup its still me and your thoughts were correct. I didn't jump at him because its not eta related. I completely could've though since its a step sister to eta comments but I haven't seen his name here before and noobs need a little break.... (don't tell anyone) but he didnt demand anything so I gave just a little sarcasm in my post.
No WildHeroc is still a no go. The new boot.img flash created wont even install. I have some ideas though but not enough time to type it all out, or have time to try. Kids just started school and busy work life. Plus I don't want noobs to try what I do out of curiosity and mess up their hero. I'm too experienced with mine. Trust me when I move to the 3d forums the good ole times will be back again. Nothing will be like this forum though.
Some of these ROMS are probably only good for wifi google voice voip. Thats all i can do since im in a rural area and have no service but all of Wild Hero updated roms have worked for me no problem. Except the 2.2 su binary update all the time.

What do you mean only good for WiFi, Google Voice, and VoIP?
What i meant by that is all the ROMS ive used seem to work fine including yours. I dont have service since im in a rural area. It just seems those with service sometimes the part of the different roms dont work. I wouldnt know since i dont have service. I have everything including incoming outgoing calls but only thru wifi

But the way you said it "made it seem all these roms are good for"..... see what I mean? Dastin ported the excellent iHero from tazz and its fantastic. Him and jaybob are true heros here keeping up the development. Huge breakthrough was fine tuning the .35 kernel. Been waiting months for an update to it since s0bes departure.
I know. These roms are grt i even got close to flashing a Droid rom that hasnt even been done yet and it starting to upload but it aborted half way in between. I dont think you can really brick these phones that easy. But i am careful i just like to try different things, I appreciate what every dev is doing for us. Im just looking for something different. Plus im new at flashing since June this yr. But its like clockwork now its easy
Easy to brick too man. Especially if your this flash hungry. Just be careful

The future of the Dell Streak 7

Okay, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the development for our device.
Recently CM decided to no longer support Tegra 2 devices as they are starting to get dated. So basically that boils down to the fact that the CM10.1 will be the last one for our device that I do.
Currently I'm trying to jump start the process of putting out our updated kernel from 2.6.36.4 -> 3.1. This will hopefully put our device at a point where everything should work.
DerArtem is the lead developer on the kernel, but has been busy because he just got married and works a full time job, which puts a damper on his time (which is understandable).
I am putting in an 1-2 hours every morning on this, trying to fix those bugs and was just tipped on a possible way to minimize the overload of the log with the USB error. This will be a hold off till we get the kernel done as these issues should go away after the update.
I am sad to see this tablet come to an end (though not yet). We all have to admit that its time we all start moving on. I am going to push to get these last bit done and call it quits. This can take anywhere from 2-5 months to finish up, maybe a bit longer and then our device will be done.
I have had an amazing time learning about Android under DJ_Steve and DerArtem, and thank them for taking the time to teach me.
I thank you what you done so far and in the future. Can blame you one bit for your decisions.
I think setting an "end game" is respectable, and is a good goal. The kernel work is the key to smoothing things over on what has been wonderful development thus far.
The fact you've taken us this far sir is very commendable and you and the crew deserve many thanks. For your time and efforts, you have my gratitude, and my tablet serves as a hobby rather than a shelved device.
4.2.x has been flawed since release by Google, and with the way android has evolved, future versions will undoubtedly require more current hardware and OEM support. The latest tablet releases have as much computing power as a 2 year old laptop! Thanks to you, we've managed to play with JB, and I look forward to what comes before a final release.

Wow, I hate doing this, but I may have to close up shop on all this. Severe lack of any real work is getting done as I am looking for jobs and trying to have some game time as well.
The time to do this isn't worth it. I may ask for payments for my next ROM ($1 per download). Seriously, I hate doing it but this just isn't worth it anymore. Currently working on a AOKP release, to see if this may resolve any bugs I am having.
Hi giveen,
first of all thank you for all the time you spent on our old device. I already donated you some time ago and always had an eye on your progesses. I really understand your decision to ask for some payment for all the work and that is absolutely ok for me.
I use my DS7 (wifi only) on a daily base to check my mails, surf the net and stream some TV and video from my HTPC. Until now I use a HC 3.2 mod (514 mod by dreamer) together with V6 Supercharger script and am so far quite ok with that. So far I see no need to buy me a new tablet as long as the DS7 fits my few needs
But before I collect all my courage and update my DS7 in the near future to your CM10 build I want to ask a few things:
1. Is your build already stable and usable enough for the things I do with my device?
2. Any news from DerArtem about the kernel work? Will there be a new kernel for our device in the future?
THX,
Michael

If its from your HTPC, I honestly don't know as I have never tried it before. This latest build is much more stable, though it still has the gmail keyboard crash that I am tracking down. If you are happy with what you have, don't do anything. I would hate for you to make a purchase and not be happy.
I haven't heard from DerArtem in several weeks because he is in another country (Russia) doing a job. (He lives in Germany). To be honest, I don't think a new kernel is going to happen and I'm really upset by it.

One issue I see here is that when you start charging, a person paying for it like a app from the Play Store, they expect things to work. This "might" cause you to spend more time than you have been on it. Just my $0.02!
Didn't somebody donate an unused DS7 for DerArtem for this kernel project?

They can contact me if they are having an issue. I appreciate the concern though.
Yes, someone did give their DS7 to him.

I'll be downloading it later after some usage and a charge.
I'm working on sensors now. The old sensor drivers we used were for something we dont even have. I found the correct Android drivers but they are for qualcomm devices, so I need to modify them to work.
