A few thoughts on the Verizon Revo GB update - LG Revolution

I updated yesterday, used to watch streaming movies and shows on Netflix and Tube Plus, but now a 6 min. vid. on youtube app. loads like I'm on my old Eris before Tazz helped that out. Seriously my 4G LTE is weak as hell, I'm about to Occupy Verizon if they don't make it better,........ all else is cool though. I like the 1 click root after the update, worked like a charm,.......now if my signal would go back to being awesome I would be very happy. Let me throw some knowledge out after my opinion and before my question,....... the wifi tether v.3.1 beta 6 works great after going through tether now, easy tether, pda net, the thing I did was change the profile to the LG optimus, and enable routing fix, that's all i did,.......now the question, if Verizon doesn't fix this connectivity problem, is there a way to revert back to vz6 and still have root?....... share your thoughts on this update,..... I personally am not impressed,.... except i got root immediately.

Yes you.com flash the v6 tot than root

this is what i notice of difference between my rooted VZ4 revolt 1.5 w v6 supercharger VS rooted VZ7 GingerVolt 1.0-1.2 w v6 supercharger
tested on Speedtest app
vz4 revolt 1.5
1 bar avg 5.7 dn 1.2 up
2 bar avg 7.5 dn 3.5 up
3 bar avg 9.8 dn 6.8 up
4 bar avg 12.7 dn 9.6 up
vz7 GingerVolt 1.0-1.2
1 bar 6.3 dn 5.3 up
2 bar 8.7 dn 3.5 up
3 bar 12.3 dn 7.9 up
4 bar 16.3 dn 10.5 up
i did notice the difference in speed once i updated to GB and a few times i did get into 22+
also the speed do vary depending on the time you run it because when it's during peak hrs it get bogged down alot
i get those results when i use wifi tether 3.1 p100 but not the easytether avg 8.9 even on full bar

Here's some screen shots I took recently

I love gingerbread. Especially after I went Gingervolt (1.2) My phone has been what seems like a 100 times faster. Then again I was still V4 with revolt 1.5.
Kudos again to MT for the Gingervolt
Just a thought, Have you tried dialing *228 and hitting option 2 to update your service? I might be wrong about the process, but i thought it updated information about the towers in your area for where you live. Either way, it fixes my bars when ever I have occasional problems.

Just tried the 228 thing, it says a Sim card had updated my phone

Don't use the *228 thing on a 4g phone with SIM Card. That is what I was told from the tech's at Verizon.
With a 4g phone/SIM card, you want to pull the sim card out, let sit for 10+ seconds (I recommend 30 seconds) and then reinsert and boot up.
The 4g phones do NOT update roaming/data services via *228. You need to use this method..
Try that and see if it helps.

When I had first gotten my phone, I had to downgrade it to V4 from V6 to get it rooted. (OneClick had surprisingly failed to root it at V6 at the time.)
Verizon tried to force a V6 upgrade to get the phone ready for GB.
It naturally failed because I had rooted the phone.
I manually used a tot to go to V6, then the same to V7 and GB.
Then through some jiggery pokery and head scratching, I figured out how to get GingerVolt on, and it's been working like a dream since.
I've got some battery issues, but I will see how things work after a battery calibration.
The immediate layout of GB/GV seems to be a bit more intuitive than I had previously had. I don't know whether I have GB or GV to thank for keeping my apps in alphabetical order, and the horizontal scrolling as well.
The V7 upgrade also flew through OneClick with flying colours, and rooting was not an issue.
I've only had GB/GV for less than 24 hours, but I like it a lot more than what I had previously, so that's a start.

The order and scrolling are more due to the launcher (such as ADW) than the mod or the GB update. in fact, my phone looked and felt pretty close to Froyo Stock when I updated to GB. Of course, with MT's quickness and the Esteem root method that worked, I didn't have a stock GB for much more than a few hours, so I can't really remember much of the stock GB feel, LoL.
There are other launchers available via the market. Although I feel ADW is the better of the ones I've tried, there might be something better you like such as the GO Launcher that others seem to like. I originally chose ADW because of the themes that were available. There are two I really like and one that I've stuck with.

Cybie, thnx that helped, m my experience with adw was a lot of force closes, I'm using go now but I a switch a lot

Were you able to still use the phone?
Yea, Sucks.
Holy Cow Dude that looks terrible. I've not had an epic fail yet but I've overdone it recently. my Rooted HTC HD2 seems to have a habit of failing, freezing or rebooting right when I need it. I'm on my way home, i need to make multiple calls back to back and what happens friggin android phone freezes. I kill all tasks try to bring it back up, crashes again then instantly into a reboot.
LG Envy Touch.
Biggest piece of crap I have ever owned.
Complained so much to Verizon that two months after getting my upgrade, they let me get another two year upgrade price on a droid x and keep the envy. Lol. Sold it on Ebay for over $200.
Yea it sucked big time.
I had to deal with 3-4 phone reps and 4-5 store guy's before I got a new phone.
I will tell what they said:
1 phone rep said I needed to leave the phone off over night. ( Say what)
1 phone rep said I needed to clear all in all internet apps. ( So did not fix it)
2 store reps said I was being "slowed down for lot's of data use".
3 reps said it needed a fac reset. ( Did not fix it for long, came home and bam 600kbs)
Any way the new one is all good, but it was a pain becuase "it's the best phone they have". ( I am like I just want the thing to work right, telling me this crap does not make me feal better.)

Yeah it just requires a reboot but it happens every now and then not as often as the random reboots though
I think this phone or verizon is crap.
Well I should have not said all good with the new one, but a lot better so far. It has droped Data 2 times and fell back to 3G one time in the 2 days I have had it.
I don't know at this point if verizon is crap or the razrs are unstable. I know motorola is better than this so I think it's just the 4G LTE gsm and CDMA trying to work at the same time fail.
Edit: It's now doing it to. This is my 2nd phone and less than 3 days it start's pulling this crap.
Bigest phone fail us the Samsung intercept. It's the definition of crashes, freezes, slowness, freak outs, and miss sends and barely any apps work with it
Biggest fail for me was the Nokia N90.
Nice phone with nice camera features, but every now and then it drove me crazy with random resets or, sometimes, with unnoticed shut downs. It just resetted or shutted down in my pocket.

w00t for battery life

I'm on broken out revo 1.1, and I need to say that zv8 and the work mtmichaelson has put into this phone has not only saved it from disaster, but made it something to be fond of.
I didn't think this kind of battery life was possible, so thank you!

nice nice man i have the extended battery on mine and im looking at 13hrs 26mins and 46sec on my battery and im at 29% can i ask how you make yours last so long and how long do you play on it etc?
If you look closely at his status bar those black areas show huge amounts of time the phone was asleep. Still, impressive. I'm guessing he spends a lot of time on wifi and hasn't bumped up his min proc speed.
Also, +1 for Go SMS.

I actually keep wifi off most of the time, unless i'm at home. The wifi at work drops its signal a lot and forces my phone to constantly switch between wifi and LTE, so I usually just rely on LTE. I'm in Seattle, so my LTE coverage is very solid and consistent; I rarely see my phone dropping to a 3G network.
I thought I had bumped my minimum processor speed up to 245, but i guess i didn't make it stick, so I was running the 122.
And even though there was plenty of sleep time for the phone, it is still close to a 3x improvement over stock zv5 and zv7, as well as GingerVolt. On some of those rom's i'd be lucky if my phone made it 12 hrs on a good day without draining the battery.

what ROM are you on? that seems to have the greatest impact, because before ZV8 battery life was mostly terrible.
I would estimate my phone usage to be close to, if not slightly under, normal. No graphics heavy games, but normal text messages, emails, banking, calls, facebook, calendar, alarm...you get the idea.
well i have the extended battery but everything on my phone except my battery is stock ZV8 and everything else i would like to root it but im scared of losing everything
if you follow all the directions to a T, you shouldn't run into any problems. and the more you practice, the more comfortable you'll feel about working with your phone.
root and broken out ftw. it will make your phone worth having, because the stock that verizon puts on this is crap and will leave you frustrated.
If you can get all of your important documents/files onto your computer, just reload them...I erase everything from my phone on a fairly regular basis and really only keep what i absolutely need. that, and setting everything back up really isn't that difficult. its all part of the process and fun of having an android

I think the nf6 is an older build
The build number ended "NF8" on June 18th ( 4.4.2_0016). It's now "NFB" June 30th (4.4.2_18) The kernel also changed.
Well now that I'm rooted gonna wait on some roms before flashing an OTA that might lose root.

Perhaps it is via OTA. Via Kies it was 2GB.
What Is kies and where do I find it?
The OTA said it was for "platform and stability" improvements. Maybe they tweaked the TouchWiz, that some owners say, was causing some stutter/lag.
My 8.4 Just updated and its Build Number is ending in ANF9. Seems as though the performance has picked up a lot, no longer any lag when swiping left to the quick briefing page and calender page. It actually feels really nice right now. Good Job Sammy!
Also looks like RAM has been optimized quite a bit. with all default apps running im sitting at 1.3G free space. I never checked really until now, but hey whens the last time you used a samsung device and had more than 5-600MB of RAM free by default anyways lol!
No update on mine yet (BTU). Still on NF7. Least I have something to look forward too. Am hoping they tweak the battery to last longer with normal useage.

Can anyone, who download the 2GB file from KIES , screenshot their system info? I want to see if it differs from mine. Thank you..
I got the update today, I can confirm that touchwiz performance does seem improved. It also seemed to greatly improved my wifi, I am now able to stream full blue ray HD wireless with little to no hiccups.
Beyond that general system performance seems about the same and benchmarks have not changed.
Definitely a good update, not sure if I hosed myself in terms of root though.
Well considering the fact we have no idea when anyone will ever cook off a rom for us I went ahead and ran the update. Can't really notice any difference but then again I wasn't running TouchWiz anyway. Of course now I no longer have root.
Wondering if we need a brand new root with this update?

Yeah I hadn't rooted yet, but will want to eventually.
Definitely seems to be mostly around touchwiz, curious if others see the wifi streaming improvement. Before the update I needed bump plex down to 12mbit and bsplayer wouldn't stream anything smooth, now I have plex running at 20mbit and bsplayer can play compatible videos directly even full blue ray h.264 videos.
I can also confirm that memory usage in default state is considerably lower, though not sure that's of much import given how android allocates memory.
Was hoping the floating multi window for the pro would show up, but no luck
There may be something to the improved WiFi speeds and streaming. I notice that YouTube videos load pretty much instantaneously and stream without hiccup. Dunno, maybe placebo effect but does seem quite good.
Update: Confirmed improved streaming. Cranked up Star Trek Into Darkness on Netflix. It started much faster than previously and full HD quality resolved in about half the time. Pleased.

Just reflash the original cf auto root.
Update to the latest version via Kies. Lost root but the previous root method still work for the 10.5.
Touchwiz is so much better I've abandoned go launcher and gone back to touchwiz, my scrolling widgets are much faster in touchwiz than go launcher now.
Glad to hear root still works. I'll be rooting as soon as I'm past my 45 day return period

[Q] Sluggish phone

Well, I'm growing tired of my phone lagging like a single core 600MHz Android running Eclair.. Can we just go to the T-Mobile store and tell them to give us a new one (provided we purchased our phones from T-Mobile in the first place) I can't imagine this phone was designed to run this slow.

I think this phone has some aggressive throttling injected. Like configured to opperate with 2 cores even before it starts warming up. Keep in mind that it also has android 5.1 which suffers from poor memory management. we need 5.1.1 update. I find not sense to these multicore CPU Craze when we fall victim of these type of software limitations.

Also, Clean Master is a band-aid (as opposed to a solution). I find it immediately has an impact.
I disable the smart BS from LG. Uninstall everything that can be uninstalled and disable pretty much everything that can be disabled.
Also do Maintenance restarts every few days because of the 5.1 memory issue. Works like a champ.
What really bothers me is that all of the reviews say this phone is really snappy, like hell it is, after you disable all of the installed LG and T-Mobile BS apps.

I've disabled and uninstalled what I could so far. It is better than stock, but still not what it should be.
I'd say for the most part the phone operates fine and doesn't seem to lag at all. BUT WHEN IT DOES... holy sh** ... How an android phone released this year can hang up and lag like this is completely unacceptable. I can see why people choose Iphones. My note 4 never lagged as bad as this one does at times. Literally I'll hit the back button and wait and wait and wait... 30-45 seconds before it responds... I'll be hitting it like 12 times like WTF is going on... it's absurd and unacceptable. In these moments it's worse than a Galaxy S3 ... no lie.
Like I said I am good most of the itme... MOST.. but when it does this (a few times every couple days) it's infuriating.

Yeah that is the only thing that has kept the phone from being returned - the camera is good. That and I am hoping that LG will roll out an update to fix the slowness or someone will release a root exploit so I can do it myself.
I don't get how the phone is sluggish its running fast as ever for me
I had a pretty bad unit. It was very slow and the touchscreen was unresponsive. Tmo sent me a new device and it's working so much better now.

I got the update too. Only thing it says is update from OE2 to OF3. Still 5.0.2. I don't notice anything else.
I'm holding off taking this as I suspect it will break ping-pong root. Wife is taking it now on her 925.
Edit:
Kernel date on the OF3 ATT update is June 18, so well after the May 15 cutoff date for the patch. It should be assumed that the ping-pong exploit will NOT work on this update, unless proven otherwise.
I was holding off on this update because I was planning on rooting today. I woke up this morning to the phone updating on it's own. So much for rooting.

Do we know if it does in fact wipe root?
This update seems faster. Well, it probably is because it's a newer kernel but it's not night and day.
The one change that is obvious is the signal. I have had no signal in my town for the past month, others have said the same and there are some threads about this issue.
I don't have any signal problems now (so far) so that's a good sign.

The one change that is obvious is the signal. I have had no signal in my town for the past month, others have said the same and there are some threads about this issue.
I don't have any signal problems now (so far) so that's a good sign.

Feels faster (more smooth) to me.
My first 30 minutes seems like it's much faster too. I only waited 30 minutes to post this cause I usually don't make it past 5 minutes before it slows down. So far so good. Going to hit the upgrade button on my wife's S6 now too.
We need odin files.
If you guys can hang tight for a day or two I will post a rooted FlashFire version.
EDIT:
Didn't update the bootloader or recovery

Ya, nothing really important for me
I'm using stock unrooted now and (thus far) it has fixed some of my biggest annoyances. UI is much smoother (but I'm not using TouchWiz anymore), standby battery has been non-terrible, and I haven't had any huge memory issues. With that said, these things don't always crop up in the first few days.

Actually, here are the stock pre-rooted OF3 files.

Restore in FlashFire. No support or guarantees from me. Use at your own risk.
If you flash this, DO NOT UNROOT!!! PingPong root has been patched, there is no known root method.

Will try this. Does it delete everything?

Fix signal issues? If you had any.

I concur, memory stays about 1Gb free for me now, which is sickening but acceptable.

Well I was getting huge battery drain from the HD Voice option being selected on OE2. I just checked and when I went back to stock it enabled the HD voice again without any big problems w/ battery life.
Update- the ear piece sound much better for calls, but a lot of people I talk to say I sound a lot worse. Wanted to see if anyone else has similar feedback?
I turned off "enhanced 4gLTE" for HD voice and everyone says I sound much better. I don't live in an HD voice area according to the coverage map, so I don't know if that matters
I am rooted with PingPong, is there any way to block this OTA update?
