You may also use any app to manage the APN
i use this one https://market.android.com/details?id=com.curvefish.widgets.apnonoff&feature=search_result
...or if you just wanna turn the data off you can go into settings, wireless and network, mobile network, and uncheck mobile data

thx..everyone..i got it now
When I goto *#*#4636#*#* I have cs/ps. Which just means calls and data. Which disables 3g. Seems my thrill doesnt have the option

Hey everyone!
Just curious, is there a way to have the SGS use only 2G on the rogers network? When I turn my APN on it automatically tries to connect to 3G, but I actually have unlimited 2G browsing on my plan, but no 3G plan.
I went into rogers and they said I cant do it, but I dont want to believe them lol
Thoughs?
it's true at the moment
but i never heard of such a BullS about 2G plan vs 3G plan
if you have data plan, it wont matter if it's 2G or 3G it's still data
if that was true, they will need to provide separate APN for you to enter into the phone
This works on my Captivate
Go to the phone app and enter *#*#197328640#*#*
Select 1) Debug Screen
Select 8) Phone Control
Select 4) UE State Control
Select 3) Change RAT to GSM
Unfortunately the setting will go back after a reboot, if I remember correctly.
I believe switchpro has an option to fall back to 2g....don't quote me though lol

Install an optimus 3D rom is the only way to disable 4G and keep 3G. You can't disable 4G without disabling 3G on an att rom.
To disable 4G & 3G go to the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information. You may or may not have the ability to switch off 3G. Some have it and some don't.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to force my phone to stay on EDGE. I have good EDGE signal but it keeps jumping to GPRS.
Thanks
I don't have my note yet, but in SGSII. If you go to settings>>wirelsss and network>>Mobile Networks>>Network Mode, Choose GSM only, it should always stay in Edge.
It worked for me.

hmm I'm running a AOSP ICS rom so don't see Network Mode anywhere under Mobile networks
this will prevent you to join 3g, if u select gsm only, it will disable 3g.
but i dont know you can select between edge n gprs

well I'm using a unlocked GNote on Tmobile so for now no way getting 3g anyway but in a area where I have full bars on Edge sometimes it switches to GPRS which I'm trying to prevent.
I think it depends on network, n even i dont believe it have relation with nwtwork bar. You will get edge or gprs according you are connected with network. So it is metwork dependent. I dont think you can change it manually, as both are comes under 2g. We can chose 2g/3g, but afaik we cant select subtype.

sucks for me
you can try with this hidden menu, in the phone dialer input:
*#*#4636#*#*
first option, about phone, slide to the bottom and you will see network connection options, choose CDMA only to force EDGE, also you can choose more options than in the normal menu, don't modify anything else in this menu

Codes won't work on aosp roms.
I would like my phone to be connected to 3g all the time in order to save battery... Is there any way to do this? Changing to gsm, CDMA in network settings still gives me hspa.
Thnx

HSPA is still 3G. If you want you can select to use GSM only and you will only get EDGE connectivity.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* , go to phone information, and there's a dropdown which by default says WCDMA preferred. Switch that to whatever else you need. Also, remember that this setting does not stick after reboot so you need to reset it to your preference each time after you reboot your phone.
Misread, sorry.
Hi, I realized that when I turn off the 4G network data the phone changes to 3G, then if I turn on data again it turns 4G on after 20 seconds.
I had tried to use the *#*#4636#*#* method and put "LTE only", it works, but after I turn off data again the setting returns to GSM.
Other phones have 4G network ON don't matter if data is on or off.
There's a way to force 4G network all the time like the other phones have?
Well, like no one has the answer, I had found a workaround:
The app Intelli3g is the answer!
