I had the OG Droid before and now I;m helping out a friend. I remember that in order to get WiFi tethering to work on it you needed a Kernel that would allow it. Can any one point me in the right direction for a Froyo ROM and a compatible Kernel that can do WiFi tethering?

I've never been too happy with CM in general...but i can always give it a try.
BTW would i need to change the Kernel with the CM7 rom to use WiFi tether or does the zip file containe a compatible kernel that gets flashed at the same time?

It contains the right kernel. The only bad part about tethering on the D1 is that it creates adhoc networks and some tablet devices cannot see them. There are no workarounds on D1's side.
I have my droid tether w/o problem. Even had my computer VPN over the connection, which was pretty neat!
I can't get my PS3 or my laptop to successfully connect on my D1 tethering. The adhoc network is just annoying.

I am an eris user but my wife has the MotoDroid and she got the FRG22D update and wanted me to root her phone so she can use the wifi tether app. I thought it would be as simple as rooting and downloading the app but it seems not to be working right, do i need to install a rom or flash a kernal on her phone for wifi tether to work properly? Id prefer not to install a rom cause she just wants to keep it as stock as possible.

I have an oportunity to trade my Nexus One for a Captivate + $300, but just wanted to see if Mobile Hotspot worked on the Captivate?
I don't mind rooting, but I don't see Mobile Hotspot listed as features in any of the rooted 2.2 ROMs; I'm assuming it is included as part of 2.2 but don't want to lose my Nexus One just to find out it isn't included.
Thanks
It's called MobileAP. Don't know what that stands for but it's used for wireless tethering. There's also the option to tether via usb. It's pretty much available in all current Captivate ROMs.

Tethering and HotSpot are different. Do you really need to create an Access Point for many devices, or do you just want your laptop to use your phone's Internet connection?
If you search on Android Tethering, there are many tethering apps.
As I understand it, MobileAP and Mobile HotSpot are the same thing. I have the leaked version of 2.2 on my Captivate and by activating MobileAP, I can wireless-ly connect several computers to the internet through my phone.
Does ATT charge us for using mobile ap? i am on axuras 2.2 rom but i havent tested it out yet.
My buddy has a captivate but I currently use a vibrant and HD2. I tried to help him install MobileAP via Colckwork ROM Manager and it booted the recovery and installed but it is not found on the Wireless Settings.
Which custom rom has Moble AP currently installed? I am just trying to help a friend get his Captivate on the right track.
I had already advised him to run a custom rom but he is a newbie and a new convert to Android.
Thanks for any input!

I'm pretty sure most froyo roms have them.

Can confirm that both Cognition and Perception have Mobile AP.
You can also run 'Android Wi-fi Tether' (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) from even the original as-shipped JF6 ROM (assuming you've rooted of course).

No, although the functionality is similar, they are two different things entirely.

As of this moment, AT&T does not charge for Mobile AP (other than your standard data charges). They do charge an additional fee for their Mobile Hotspot however. Mobile AP was taken out of the official Captivate builds for this very reason.
Attached tun.ko for 4.1.57. Works for me with VPNC. I put it in /system/lib and the VPNC Widget can load it.
awesome!!!! i was waiting for this to be able to connect to my cisco vpn!
great post!!!
Note: network connection tracking does not work
This means that after you connect to VPNC, disconnect from VPNC, turn wifi off, and then turn wifi back on, your connection will be hosed. As a workaround, you can run the VPNC widget settings pane and retoggle wifi. This resets the network state.
thx for this tread.good job
Thanks for shared! this file working well on 1.83 too
It's working perfectly on the Brazillian version of Atrix from Claro carrier.
I really wanted the possibility of compiling other modules for my Atrix stock kernel.
I really wanted to use some volume encryption functionality... As such a tool does not exist natively for Android, I`m thinking about using some kernel functinoality such as Loop-AES, LUKS, DM-Crypt or even some userspace FS for encryption (FUSE).
So, could anyone point me where i can find the source code for the Atrix kernel to try to compile those modules for it? I really think that this could be a great thing. One of the very fews things that i miss on Full Linux.
Thanls in advance.

Victor, are you using the stock kernel with this or did you need to recompile it?
I'm very sorry for the looooooooooooooooong delay in the answer.
And yes i was using on the stock kernel (Claro Brazil Android 2.2). Now i'm trying to use OpenVPN on the latest 2.3.6 official rom and it's not working anymore...
I'm thinking in some workround... any ideas?
Cheers.

The tun.ko module doesn't work, I was going to compile one for 2.3.4 (at least the stock kernel) but it seems my desktop killed itself, and I'm not going to install linux on my laptop (it seems to suck with booting from CD, and USB doesn't work... no idea why, but it works fine with Windows Discs)
Might consider using Faux's kernel, it has TUN/TAP (I've never tested though)
So I've never had a problem with wifi tether. I get Wireless Tether for Root Users and Barnacle Wifi Tether to boot up and start running and all. But both times, all that happens is that the upload data increases but the download data doesn't move at all. I think this might have something to do with kernel from what I've been reading. I'm using LiquidSense 2.1.1 with Deca's #589 uncapped kernel. And yes, I am rooted Thanks for anyone's help ahead of time!!!

Do a nand. Try jm's kernel and see if the wifi tether works. Or try a different rom.
#Root/Hack_Mod-Always®
flash zens kernel, will fix trackball light as well.

Very strange. I use that same combination a lot and it works perfect tethering to my rooted Nook Color. Liquid Sense Rom, Deca #589 uncapped and wireless tether! Maybe it was a bad install. Have you tried wiping everything and reflashing?

Okay so I did something similar. I reflashed the kernel, reinstalled the app, and eventually I got it to work. That whole ordeal was odd lol. Thanks everyone for your help!

Hi all!
I just recently tried to get my Wifi tether on ATT Vivid to work and it almost bricked my phone. I used the all in one tool and ended up whit a white screen. I have now managed to get back on stock, with locked bootloader and I'm ready to try again. This time, I'll ask insted of just try/fail.
I want the stock rom (or close), but rooted. Is this possible?
Should I use the all in one tool, what should I do?
I've got the Unlock_code.bin from HTC.
I have really tried to read about this, but I get confused with new/old info.
All help is warmly appreciated.
I didn't get any help here, but I found info another page.
For future reference:

Yeah - the "stock" Illuminati ROM works with WiFi hotspot... but I can't understand why his modded one (or any other modded one, for that matter) wouldn't work and would give these network errors. I can't imagine they would be using a different WiFi Router apk?
It's easy enough to say "stay on stock", or "it works with AT&T"... but if the stock works with other carriers, what is changing between the ROMs with mods that would break it? Hmmm.
Going to keep fiddling.

Maybe the kernel? After all...whenever yo flash a kernel you have to flash its WiFi libs...which is why if you don't have a proper kernel flash the WiFi doesn't work...just a guess though

No - it's not kernel related, I've narrowed that down. It has to be a permission somewhere - I think AT&T puts in a "check" to see if you have the hotspot enabled, and if you are using a carrier other than AT&T, that breaks it.
