Hello All,
I've long been a lurker but I decided to join today for some help. I've also decided I'd like to root my Tab.
One of the things I want to root it for is the Wireless Tether app. I just wanted to ask anyone that uses it to verify it works and if there are any special steps to make it work. I intend to use Z4Root then get Wireless Tether from Market.
I'm also considering overclocking, any App suggestions for that? I'd also like to know if anyone has any custom ROM suggestions.
Thanks for tolerating my newbishness and for the replies.

It would help to know what tab ur using considering there are like 5 different types.

That's true. Sprint CDMA Samsung Galaxy Tab, SPH-P100. Not too sure what other information would behelpful.

I haven't used tethering, but am pretty n00b to Tab root. I rooted my Sprint SGT using oneclickroot, and it worked great, but haven't done much else. I plan on setting up CWM, and flashing my first Rom today, to prep for the HC port. Since I was planning on it anyways, I can let you know what I do, and what the outcome is... there are plenty of existing threads for that though... I'll test wireless tethering, and let you know!

Thanks Phil, I'd appreciate you testing Wireless Tether on there before flashing it if you're willing to. I don't really have plans to run a Custom ROM at the moment (except maybe the HC port when spacemoose finishes it), but I do want to know if WT will work.
Z4Root no longer works for the sprint tab. You will need to use superoneclick to root. To overclock you can get SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. I am using Bauxite's kernel and love it.
I just got a tab today (t-mobile version). I already own a vibrant (running bionix). Which ROM is the best for the tab....especially to speed it up?
You can only temp root (and permanent root) your device using Visionary application. I've tested it and working as expected.
Why would you want to root the device is it to just put a better rom on it? I assuem you could also put the Honeycomb rom on it as well right?
Maybe use another flasher instead of SGS?
It might be just my case, but all the times I used SGS it has borked my Verizon Tab. Not sure if Sprint is the same way. I was able to recover to a default state by using the Verizon orginal restore files and Odin.

If it bricked your tab were you able to send it back to Verizon and get it fixed? How does that work? If you can't tell I am new here trying to figure out which tablet to get and how to fix it when things WILL go wrong on my first root.

Sorry wrong choice of words, I meant to put borked. Bricked means not being able to bring it back. In my cases I was able to bring it back to default by the Yellow screen download mode. I will correct my post.

Which kernel flasher did you ultimately find that worked with your Verizon Tab?
Hello all,
I've been reading and downloading from xda for over a year now (sgs- darky's rom mainly), and this is my FIRST POST!
I know i can find my answer just by looking but i really wanted to post for the first time so here's my question- My tab is in the post (got it from ebay as i'm a pauper and can't afford it new, or the 8.9 or 10.1) and obviously want to root it straight away. I've seen that some are using z4 root but my sgs won't accept this method, can i be sure it'll work?
take care fellow "tabbers"
PS the doorbell just rang and it's here! *wets pants and logs off*

KERNEL 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
PDA- P1000XWJJ7
PHONE- P1000XXJK5
CSC- P1000CPWJJ5
I need to get gingerbread (at least) on this thing straight away! Or any cool roms you can recommend?
How do i find out if it's GSM or CDMA? i'm in the UK... That is probably a really stupid question, but i'm a stupid guy... A stupid guy who loves android and wants to learn more!
Any links to the right places would be really appreciated
First you're not stupid. You're just new and learning.
Second your tab judging by its firmware is gsm european tab.
Third you can root using superoneclick root.
Fourth. Head to the development section and you will find alot of great roms (or click on my sig if you're interested in overcome). JUST BE SURE TO READ ENTIRE GUIDES AND STUDY THEM BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

So many people get themselves into trouble by not reading instructions or skipping ahead.
Easy to get yourself into trouble, can be VERY hard getting out...
Thank you for all the help, most kind I'm at work now so will try some bits tomorrow, managed to get rooted before leaving tho

Your tab is rooted already. Look at the kernal version. In your apps you will see something called Superuser. Tap it. If its there and opens you are rooted.

That's what really confused me, the kernel said root on it, but no super user was there and none of my purchased root apps could aquire root.... so I used super one click as advised and hey presto! Still confused as to why it said that on my kernel tho...

Just out of interest as i'm un-learned, how can you tell if the bootloader is signed? (As far as I can tell) it hasn't affected the rom installation... could it?
Thanks all for the support!

but can't find an answer.... is it doable? Also, what other mods can I do to it? I wish XDA had a section for each version of the tab, I have a huge headache from trying to find my answer.... thanks guys
bump..... Please guys, help me out. I tried rooting last night but failed, guess I tried the root from a different tab... so please help me out... I'm getting ready to smash this thing
Really, no one can help me out? ... maybe another forum has more courteous members.

Do you think that bumping your post two hours after posting it is courteous?
I just got a Galaxy Tab WiFi myself, but I did my research *before* I bought it. No Gingerbread is available, that I know of. There are not many alternative ROMs for the WiFi only model.
What did you use in your rooting attempt? The only two ways I know are with a Windows app or with z4root, an Android app. I haven't tried either one, here is a link to z4root on this forum.

SuperOneClick should be able to help you root your Tab.
Here's the Noob Rooting Guide with links and downloads.
Always do your research. The Development forums will be one of your best resources for your Tab.

No offense but if you're going to criticize you might as well not even comment to avoid any frustrations or arguments as a result. Thank you for the link, I was able to find z4 and lag fix yesterday.... applied both but i might roll back on the lag fix since I have no haptic feedback now unless anyone knows of a fix? I wasn't able to find anything on Google... wifi only tab and p1010 aren't too popular searches.

*sigh* waiting for this too..
****ty Samsung , is it so hard to just make an official Gb for this little tab considering the workforce they have at their disposal.
At one point I had heard that the Sprint stock GB (2.3.4) update worked on the Wifi only tabs, but I don't have a wifi only to test with.
I haven't heard of any alternative roms for the wifi only version.

Check with Kies, see if you have a firmware update. I only have a P1000, but maybe it's similar.
oh yeah, give time for people to reply your thread. Don't be a spoiled kid.

EDIT: from other answers here the Sprint GB 2.3.4 ROM stock or rooted sounds the way to go, so it looks like this should work for you as it did for me on my Verizon CDMA tab.
It's hard to say for sure, experimentation is part of the fun, but killing the tab isn't. I didn't find any definitive answers on flashing a Sprint CDMA ROM on to a Verizon CDMA Galaxy Tab (for example), so I decided to try for myself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255339
I suspect doing a FULL ROM flash would be a *very* bad idea (it seems doing that with a GSM ROM on other (non-GSM) tabs KILLS it). However, the technique I used was only to apply the kernel and filesystems, so I would *think* if you had a backup from before (always best to have a backup anyway, right?) you could always revert. You may want to look around and check to see if stock WIFI images are out there (I don't know for sure) but the Voodoo or CwM (ClockworkMod) recovery backups should be fine either way.
Then if you apply the filesystem and kernel files from 2.3.4 and they don't work you should be able to revert (I would assume, I can certainly flash back and forth on mine). I would *think* the kernel supports vanilla hardware + CDMA additionally (i.e. you don't need it, but it doesn't hurt), but may be fine.
But again, unless you're prepared to take the risk, I cannot say for sure, you can wait and see if anyone else chimes in, but that's my take.

I have the P1010 also and from what I've heard, the two models (P1010 and P1000) have different hardware which makes the latter model possible for the ginger update while ours likely will never get it.
Enjoy it for what it is. That's all I can say.

No offence but you are the one who was rude by bumping your topic after 2 hours and also accusing people who didnt answer as not courteous, so obviously you are going to get criticism.
Your problem is that you cant be bothered to go read or search and expect people to jump on your topic and bring all the info to you. This is XDA-developers, not tech support, try and at least help yourself first before demanding answers.
If anyone tests the spring gingerbread method and it works, please say so. xD Im too much of a coward to risk my tab.

You can save a flashable ROM in the sdcard. Then if the tab got bricked, you can insert the sdcard in and reflash again. But i don't recommend doing this because me myself never flashed my tab, only my nexus one.
I just bought a bunch of tabs for my business. I rooted one before I updated it and it worked fine, but wouldn't update. I then updated one and now it won't root.
I'm really a total noob when it comes to rooting. I haven't even touched flashing. I would rather keep it as stock as possible. I'm mostly rooting it to remove bloatware. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, please help.
I've run superoneclick 2.2 and run zergrush, but that seems to stall out.
Currently, the only way to root 2.3.5 is to flash a pre-rooted rom. I'm using "Galaxy Cubed" you can find it under dev section.

and there is no guarentee buying a stock phone will have ics anyway, droid 4 originally came with GS. 2.3.6
There is no way to go back to ICS.
The Mobile Hotspot app works just fine under JB as it did under ICS and GB. The SQL database hack still works, at least it still works on mine, my wife's and my sister's D4's.

I am not rooted, or familiar with that process, I didn't want to brick my phone, what is this SQL work around and does it require being rooted? And what are the dangers involved with rooting? Also, is there a concise guide to rooting a Droid 4 or the SQL workaround that can be linked?

First off, rooting will void your warranty. As a user in the UK, that warranty was of no use to me anyway, but if you are a Verizon customer, then it's something to be aware of.
If you are happy with that caveat, you should be able to root your phone using the Razr Blade exploit available here... http://vulnfactory.org/public/razr_blade.zip
To get the hotspot working, you need to follow the first two steps here... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-4-hacks/208266-how-wi-fi-tether-droid-4-a.html (the item number may differ, the important thing to look for is the Entitlement Check entry).
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Steve.
