JB is freezing my phone, my shift kept no longer functions and half the things don't work. I tried to factory reset and it still has all of the same issues, none of these happened during ICS. Please help, Verizon customer.

and there is no guarentee buying a stock phone will have ics anyway, droid 4 originally came with GS. 2.3.6
There is no way to go back to ICS.
The Mobile Hotspot app works just fine under JB as it did under ICS and GB. The SQL database hack still works, at least it still works on mine, my wife's and my sister's D4's.

Why can't you use the hotspot app? If you are rooted, you can make it work, no problem.

I am not rooted, or familiar with that process, I didn't want to brick my phone, what is this SQL work around and does it require being rooted? And what are the dangers involved with rooting? Also, is there a concise guide to rooting a Droid 4 or the SQL workaround that can be linked?

First off, rooting will void your warranty. As a user in the UK, that warranty was of no use to me anyway, but if you are a Verizon customer, then it's something to be aware of.
If you are happy with that caveat, you should be able to root your phone using the Razr Blade exploit available here... http://vulnfactory.org/public/razr_blade.zip
To get the hotspot working, you need to follow the first two steps here... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-4-hacks/208266-how-wi-fi-tether-droid-4-a.html (the item number may differ, the important thing to look for is the Entitlement Check entry).
Hope this helps.

Hello All,
I've long been a lurker but I decided to join today for some help. I've also decided I'd like to root my Tab.
One of the things I want to root it for is the Wireless Tether app. I just wanted to ask anyone that uses it to verify it works and if there are any special steps to make it work. I intend to use Z4Root then get Wireless Tether from Market.
I'm also considering overclocking, any App suggestions for that? I'd also like to know if anyone has any custom ROM suggestions.
Thanks for tolerating my newbishness and for the replies.

It would help to know what tab ur using considering there are like 5 different types.

That's true. Sprint CDMA Samsung Galaxy Tab, SPH-P100. Not too sure what other information would behelpful.

I haven't used tethering, but am pretty n00b to Tab root. I rooted my Sprint SGT using oneclickroot, and it worked great, but haven't done much else. I plan on setting up CWM, and flashing my first Rom today, to prep for the HC port. Since I was planning on it anyways, I can let you know what I do, and what the outcome is... there are plenty of existing threads for that though... I'll test wireless tethering, and let you know!

Thanks Phil, I'd appreciate you testing Wireless Tether on there before flashing it if you're willing to. I don't really have plans to run a Custom ROM at the moment (except maybe the HC port when spacemoose finishes it), but I do want to know if WT will work.
Z4Root no longer works for the sprint tab. You will need to use superoneclick to root. To overclock you can get SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. I am using Bauxite's kernel and love it.
I just got a tab today (t-mobile version). I already own a vibrant (running bionix). Which ROM is the best for the tab....especially to speed it up?
You can only temp root (and permanent root) your device using Visionary application. I've tested it and working as expected.
Why would you want to root the device is it to just put a better rom on it? I assuem you could also put the Honeycomb rom on it as well right?
Maybe use another flasher instead of SGS?
It might be just my case, but all the times I used SGS it has borked my Verizon Tab. Not sure if Sprint is the same way. I was able to recover to a default state by using the Verizon orginal restore files and Odin.

If it bricked your tab were you able to send it back to Verizon and get it fixed? How does that work? If you can't tell I am new here trying to figure out which tablet to get and how to fix it when things WILL go wrong on my first root.

Sorry wrong choice of words, I meant to put borked. Bricked means not being able to bring it back. In my cases I was able to bring it back to default by the Yellow screen download mode. I will correct my post.

I just got a Galaxy Tab WiFi myself, but I did my research *before* I bought it. No Gingerbread is available, that I know of. There are not many alternative ROMs for the WiFi only model.
What did you use in your rooting attempt? The only two ways I know are with a Windows app or with z4root, an Android app. I haven't tried either one, here is a link to z4root on this forum.

****ty Samsung , is it so hard to just make an official Gb for this little tab considering the workforce they have at their disposal.
At one point I had heard that the Sprint stock GB (2.3.4) update worked on the Wifi only tabs, but I don't have a wifi only to test with.
I haven't heard of any alternative roms for the wifi only version.

EDIT: from other answers here the Sprint GB 2.3.4 ROM stock or rooted sounds the way to go, so it looks like this should work for you as it did for me on my Verizon CDMA tab.
It's hard to say for sure, experimentation is part of the fun, but killing the tab isn't. I didn't find any definitive answers on flashing a Sprint CDMA ROM on to a Verizon CDMA Galaxy Tab (for example), so I decided to try for myself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255339
I suspect doing a FULL ROM flash would be a *very* bad idea (it seems doing that with a GSM ROM on other (non-GSM) tabs KILLS it). However, the technique I used was only to apply the kernel and filesystems, so I would *think* if you had a backup from before (always best to have a backup anyway, right?) you could always revert. You may want to look around and check to see if stock WIFI images are out there (I don't know for sure) but the Voodoo or CwM (ClockworkMod) recovery backups should be fine either way.
Then if you apply the filesystem and kernel files from 2.3.4 and they don't work you should be able to revert (I would assume, I can certainly flash back and forth on mine). I would *think* the kernel supports vanilla hardware + CDMA additionally (i.e. you don't need it, but it doesn't hurt), but may be fine.
But again, unless you're prepared to take the risk, I cannot say for sure, you can wait and see if anyone else chimes in, but that's my take.

You can save a flashable ROM in the sdcard. Then if the tab got bricked, you can insert the sdcard in and reflash again. But i don't recommend doing this because me myself never flashed my tab, only my nexus one.
Because the P1010 is the unloved orphan of the Tab world, I take all general Tab technical instructions that I read with a grain of salt when it comes to actually using them on this version of the box. While I used SuperOneClick to successfully root it with no problems, and I see that big fat Unroot button sitting there, I would just like to hear from anyone who has successfully unrooted their P1010 using SOC. Anyone have any caveats at all on this?
Update: For the faint of heart like me, just a note that SOC Unroot does indeed work for the P1010.

Bump, I followed the tutorial for rooting from here and would like to unroot it since I don't think it was rooted properly. Rooted apps like SuperUser give errors. I upgraded to Gingerbread and then rooted using this method and not SuperOneClick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520859
Just wondering how it gets unrooted using that same method since SuperOneClick seems to not work on my device.
I rooted mine without any problems at all using a different tutorial. I'll see if I can find the link when I next get back to my PC.
The 1010 does seem to be Samsung's dirty little secret but there are still some members who have it. I know a lot more about modding than when I got it so I'm about to try to do some clever stuff with it.
If it works, and if there's enough interest, I'll just have to share it here.

WARNING THIS MAY BRICK UR PHONE,
I need an USA resident that has a contract with ATT for testin, for more info pm PLZ, ASAP
This will only help you guys out.
One tester that has an att contract and is willing to get a warranty replacement if it does not work, is all that is needed. The process was verified on the RAZR and we did something similar on the Atrix2.
If this works you might be able to go back to ICS from JB to root and use something like root keeper to get JB back, just a thought here.
And yes I know most of you do not know me, but I was one of the Devs on the Atrix2, and I am now a free agent so to speak while waiting for the Ubuntu Phone OS to drop, so I am just trying to help a few of you out here, and triloger asked me to take a look at this with him.

Thank you testers! I would offer too if my phone were not already on jb.
The DROID RAZR HD XT926 CAN go back to ICS as the secure version did NOT increase in the Jellybean update.
On the Atrix HD, it has increased for the official Jellybean.

...hey bro talk to triloger for further details
I tried downgrading, to no avail. I upgraded to JellyBean 4.1.1 via OTA and lost root (whoops), so I tried flashing back to ICS 4.0.4. It wouldn't let me, so I decided to reflash ICS a few more times. Nothing bad happened until the last try, which bricked my phone. I'll confirm (for now) that you unfortunately cannot go back to ICS from JB on an AT&T Atrix HD. :C
I dont know if he is even working on a method anymore....
I would donate if I knew he was capable/willing to figure out how to root or roll back the AHD.
I have the GN3 for AT&T. I received the 4.4.2 (NC2) update a week ago and my phone is stock . All I want to do is root . I don't care about the warranty. I've seen a couple of methods that supposedly work but has anyone successfully got it done and actually retained root access? Or is this a wait it out situation. Thankss.
I don't think there is a root method for nc2 yet sorry

I'm with about 95% of Note 3 owners from AT&T patiently waiting for some root solution for our recent OTA update to NC2.
Like the movie Mad Max world, there's a lot of barrenness out there. There is no root on the horizon.
I read of rumors how other NC2 variants have achieved root, however with our "locked" bootloader, we're very very limited.
I know with our NC2 update, it "updated" our already locked bootloader to some monstrosity that won't alow a roll back.
We practically STUCK! The few root options we had prior to the update, that didn't trip the KNOX flag, are non - existent right now, and who knows if they will ever will be?

This is a very popular device I'd wager someone will come out with a boot loader hijack eventually... If/when this happens we Will have full access to the system. But as far as root is concerned I'm sure it will arrive in time. My RAZR m is not a popular flagship device and it recently finally achieved root.

This "no root" situation is very frustrating and makes the Note 3 useless to me. Just wanted to enter it into the "Smash the Past" contest to possibly win the new OnePlus One phone instead (http://oneplus.net/smash). Would so gladly shoot it through with an arrow from my hunting bow. No, I'm not a hunter, just enjoy target practice from time to time, and shooting this one would improve my aim accuracy for sure! Unfortunately will be out of country in the critical period. Darn! Anyone else would gladly smash the AT&T Note 3, if given a chance of getting another similar phone?

So dumb.
Why would you break a $700 phone for a CHANCE to win a phone that costs $300..? That makes no sense even if you were guaranteed one for breaking the Note.
How about selling the Note and use the proceeds to just buy a One, and have money left over?

It's just the frustration factor for me Would feel so good after all this trouble! I don't think I can sell it as is, I'm on a leaked KitKat version (MLG) with bootloader updated to the latest version, so I can't downgrade, and can't even upgrade to the official KitKat (when I would feel good about selling it). The actual "smash" part in the context comes only when you were selected/drawn to get the $1 OnePlus. But given that they provide you with a 16 GB memory only and there is no possibility to insert an SD card, the OnePlus in this particular configuration would be useless to me. Anyway, enough rambling. If someone hears about even a remote possibility to root this system, please post in this thread, seems like the most logical place to post such news.

Exactly. Bricked my phone trying to upgrade from rooted JB to the official KitKat (long story). Was stuck in a bootloop, and MLG Odin files with NC2 bootloader, prepared by carl1961 (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51572014#post51572014) saved me. Actually MLG works very well for me, the only concern is that the eventual future OTA upgrades won't work with it.
I still don't know if Samsung rep with their SMART software would be able to flash the NC2 ROM over this MLG setup. Did anyone know this? The local stores around here (South-Western PA) still have only JB available. Actually last week when I went there, the rep thought that he can flash JB over my system, and I let him, curious to see what will happen. What actually happened was another "brick". The phone would do nothing except to start Odin download mode, showing an error message and advising to use Kies on my PC to restore it. The Samsung rep in BestBuy did not know what else to do and sent me home with a bricked device. Tried Kies, but no matter what I did and how many times I tried to debug the connection, reinstall its drivers etc., it would do nothing. Guess at that point I should go and complain to Samsung that they bricked my phone and demanding the fix. But I just wanted to use it, so I Odine'd back Carl's MLG system. Works like a charm again... Except that I miss root, of course.
