[Q] Help! New to this thing here.

Any Xperia x8 pro out there?
I new and got this xperia x8.
1.Please recommend what things(firmware or what ever it is you put on a phone) to put for this phone. i might get the wrong ones and end up destroying my phone. please.
2.must have apps and stuff put on this phone. sorry but i'm just a pretty little noob for asking this stuff.

First thing you must do is read the "all things root" in the Q&A section. It's an introduction to phone hacking. Do that stuff see ROM reviews and always use the search tool. There is a thread about must have apps. Have fun!

Thats a perfect answer, i would recommend GingerDX. I have tried nearly every rom on xda and found that 1 to be the best, especially for a new user as its smooth and ready to run, no real need for any modules as the dev DX has included everything you need. If you want a cm6(2.2 Froyo) rom then Floyo by Racht and Froyobread by Doixanh(DX) are pretty flawless. Good luck and remember to hit the thanks button on previous post by Chris.

i have been using x8 since 3 weeks ago, first day i bought it, i was scared to do something like rooting and using custom ROM. but now, i'm geek to try each custom rom LOL. i recommend you use froyobread 23b first, because its low of bugs, i also recommend you to use stok ROM for 1 - 2 days to ensure your device works properly, rooting may makes your waranty void, do it in your own risk

PC Companion will repair your device and remove all traces of root.
Froyobread 23b is a great rom but GingerDX is Full Ginger now with the camera and i find it faster.

I recomend you.U´ll read something about root,then using Xrecovery and than....Roms.But it´s easy.

Rooting allows access to parts of the system not allowed normally.
Roms are customized version of android, eg, Rom on your phone is Android 2.1, Froyobread is 2.2 and GingerDx is 2.3. Sony Ericsson will not update us above 2.1 so we must rely on Devs, also Devs roms tend to be better than SE.
Modules are for things like overclock and multitouch along with others. A module can be added to a rom after it has been flashed, eg, x8 comes with 2 types of screen hardware, 1 is capable of real multitouch whereas the other is only fake multitouch. When you figure out what type of hardware you have then you can add the module you need.
GingerDx is stable, i have a few bugs but nothing that will affect everyday use.
I also recommend Kuyadroid as its fast and less updates to worry about.
Always backup current rom in xrecovery and rename the folder to what the rom is, eg, Kuya.backup or GingerDx.backup, this will allow you to set up each rom as you like and then choose whichever suits you best.

and make sure you BACKUP 1st before using custom ROM.. this IMPORTANT!!

If you´re using xrecovery, I would recommend you to backup twice, because it can happen that your /data partition isn´t backed up correctly.
This can also happen to your /system folder, because after I had installed the first custom ROM, Floyo 0.15, on my phone, I didn´t like the UI and the Launcher at first and restored my original SE 2.1.
But it dind´t have the market and all of my downloaded apps anymore, so I had to stay on Floyo.
So, better backup twice, if you have enough free space on your SD.

[i9000] Complete Android Noob.

Right, ive had a i9000 for 5 months or so, and ever since i got it, ive found it to be slow, at times laggy. And hate alot of the crap samsung put on it.Which ive not even used.
I reckon its about time i start to make the most of my phone, but dont really know where to start, with these custom roms and rooting and what not.
I basically want it to run smoothly and possibly add a tweaks/features to it which could possibly improve it. However i remember reading somewhere, that ill lose the camera features if i install a custom rom. :l (i could be talking from my arse here)
Also i read that android 4.0 is coming or has come out. Would i be able to upgrade my phone to it ? and should i ?? If not what is the best rom to flash which will make my phone faster and smoother.
Is there anything at all to make it significantly faster, or is it limited by hardware :/
Im currently on:

firmware 2.1 -update1
Which i havnt messed with since i got the phone.

Sorry for sounding dim, but what have you pointed me to ?? rooting ? installing a rom ? updating kernal ?
And what is the difference between these ? are all 3 needed to get the phone working as i want it to ?
Im totally new to everything andriod so can you please be as clear as possible.

OK, here we go...
1. First of all you need to root your device to install a custom rom or kernel. So first root your device with the above thread (cf-root).
2. Choose any rom from so many roms available all over xda. Choose only from the topic which is under your device's category, not from other device's rom,lol.
To do this you need Odin(use search)
3. Once done you will have custom rom and also custom kernel if you wish.
After these you can go for lagfix, like changing from rfs to ext4.

They will tell you about how to connect your phone to your PC (Samsung USB drivers + adb), 3 button mode (how to avoid bricking your phone), backing up important/unrecoverable data (like your EFS block!), and what (in general) needs to be done to flash custom firmware.
After that, you should be able to pretty much recover from any error (like unplugging your phone mid flash). Now you can go ahead and root your phone and start exploring the wonderful word of custom roms! As for which one is the best, that's like asking "how long is a piece of string?" Some people prefer speed and cutting edge, others value battery life and stability, some aim for the middle of the road.
Personally I've tried tegrak kernel and was really impressed with the speed improvement! However, the limited app space finally turned me back to other kernels. I found the rest to be pretty much six in one, half dozen in the other (ie all about the same)... so pick one you like and just go for it... use it for a while and if it's not to your liking, flash again
Just a quick rundown on android for you... firmware 2.1 = Eclair, 2.2 = Frozen Yoghurt, 2.3 = Gingerbread, 3.0 = Honeycomb (tablet only version of android) and 4.0 = Ice Cream Sandwich (unify android for phone/tablet/tv again). There is a HUGE performance increase from going stock 2.1 to 2.3! so even if you just upgrade to Samsung's Gingerbread release (2.3.3 I believe?) you will notice better performance. Doing lagfix, kernel tweaks, etc is just icing on top of the cake. However, you'll find once you start tweaking, you won't go back to stock

Well, easiest way of starting is installing KIES and letting it update your phone. That's the official way and you won't have to bother with details like kernels, roms, bootloaders, etc and won't void your warranty (if that's the case).
You'll probably be left with with some 2.3.x version. Might as well make a backup from your stuff before upgrading, kies sucks in a general way, but may help you with that.
From that point on, if you still want to press further into customization goodness, there are PLENTY to chose from.
There are mainly 2 kinds of roms:
- Samsung based (someone picks up a sock samsung rom and modifies it with scripts, kernels, themes, apps, etc). These are most of the ones you'll find in the development section of this forum.
- not samsung based (like Cyanogen e MIUI). These are built from Google's sources directly and totally skip samsung. Therefore, samsung apps most likely won't work here. Everything else does.
Personally i'd recommend Cyanogen 7.1 stable as your next rom. It's an extremely optimized and wildly popular rom, with plenty of options that you won't find in any stock rom. They have their own forum i recommend you to look up if you're going their way.
Whatever you do, GET AWAY FROM THAT 2.1

Right, ust updated to latest version via kies. And instantly alot better, smoother. Has some of those things bulit into the system which i always though were missing.
Ill try it for a week, and see if theres anything i need, or think is missing. Then i might go custom. But right now im happy with it on the latest official version.

I am a new user in the community as well i am a new owner of a galaxy note.I purchased it 3 days back,I have no knowledge about ANDROiD as i have been using NOKIA since last 7 years.
I have a very few simple questions on which i would like to take your EXPERT advice
1.I have updated the FIRMWARE to ICS now.Now after i have updated it i feel that the battery is draining too fast,Just wanted to know how to fix it.
2.Also i have heard that there is a bug in ICS which can brick the phone.How can i check if that bug is there in my Phone or not?
3.Also wanted to know as to how can i make sure that i get atleast 1.5 days from normal use
Please reply back guys as i am very eager to use this fone but when i see the battery backup i feel very disappointed

If you are running stock ICS(which I'm sure you are) you should assume that you are affected by the bug.
Refrain from doing factory reset using the STOCK/CWM recovery as this will trigger the bug even on STOCK recovery. If you have CWM do not do a NANDROID RESTORE.
If you are rooted i suggest flashing a safe custom kernel, a good one that I can
recommend for solid battery life and balanced performance is Speedmod k3-3 just look for it on the development section.
If you don't like custom kernels and prefer stock just do not do the ones I've mentioned above. If you really need to do a factory reset do it on Gingerbread.
Regarding the battery life, there are many factors to consider. First thing that you need to check if your phone is going into deep sleep. Download cpuspy on play store and report back here so we can help you.

You cant use Kies but Id recommend using ODIN because its faster and safer.

His English isnt great, but essentially
Download ODIN
Download whichever stock rom you want (GB)
Set phone to download mode
Connect to Odin
and flash.
His instructions are a lot more detailed (maybe to much so). But if you do this, the dangerous kernel will be gone and youll be safe.

I know where you are coming from being fairly new to the android scene. Have been in it now for about six months and i would consider myself fairly literate. From what you were saying you updated your phone to the official ics version for your phone. Well... The first thing you need to do my friend is read, read, and read some more. Alot of what i know and have learned has been from researching these forums and the web. Rootgalaxynote.com is pretty good for noobs as it usually has videos showing you how to do things step by step but you should also read some of the faq's about rooting and flashing on this site. If i were in your shoes the first thing that i would do would be the following;
1.) root the device using Dr. Keetans method on this site. If you havent done this it wouuld be a good place to egt started. His method will not trigger your phones counter.
2.) I would revert the phone back to its earlier version which would be gingerbread. You can do this by looking in the stock gingerbread roms section under android development on this site. Our fellow senior members have made it fairly easy to find and after reading you should have a pretty good idea of what to do.
3.) Install a kernel that is safe for ics roms such as franco kernel or abyssnote kernel. This should be fairly easy for you to do just make sure you do tue steps exactly as they describe or else you will mess the phone up.
4.) After that you can pick out a custom ics rom which if you are looking for optimal battery consumption this would be the best way to go about it as official ics rom consumes a substantial amount more battery than the sleak, lean more refined custom roms out there. Just be carefull what you choose as some are full of bugs and features not working.
The main thing here is to cover alot of ground and do your homework. Research is key and you always want to stick with sites like xda and a few others. Xda may not be the most user friendly site out there but it contains a wealth of information and iw where the best of the best come together. Hope this helps my friend.

If you can still run it fine, then you're good. But from now on refrain from doing things on the recovery until you're on a safe kernel. Some users reported that they were able to do a factory reset to the nth time before encountering the brick. Meaning you can factory reset 999 times and get away with it and on the 1000th time, brick ur device seriously god knows when it will happen.
Just stay away from CWM or Stock recovery for now if you don't know what you're doing just to be safe.
P.S. ICS is nothing to be scared of if you know what you're doing. Do a little research about the hardbrick bug good place
to start reading about it is this POST

hmm. website... ? well you can start on this website http://developer.android.com/about/index.html and don't forget our ever loved website.. (XDA-DEV)...
Just by snooping, hanging around, munch and digest all you can and soon you'll be able to pick some neat tricks in learning android terminologies in no time at all.
ODIN (PC /Mobile) is a very neat indispensable tool for custom room makers and flashers... With this tool you can always at your disposal.. whilst jump from one custom rom to another, which ever your choice or liking. Changing ROMS is akin to Flashing.. so if you flash a ROM, you are changing your current ROM to whatever ROM you would like to have it installed on your phone.
Every custom ROM has its highlights and lowlights... pick what suits you best and your good to go after. Flashing ROMs with Gingerbread support (if your still in stock GB), assures you no brick at all... Now on the other hand, if your already in ICS(Stock) and would like to flash custom roms with iCS support.. then I do warn you to be wary of it. A lot of people have fallen and have been bitten by the hardbrick bug... Just always be extra careful in doing it.

Yes! Flash it back to Stock Rom and unroot it. You should be good to go.

You should not worry too much about the bricking bug. If you stay on stock rom and your phone gets bricked you are covered by the warranty. It is not your fault that the phone has that problem.
I also recommend that you ask some friend that has experience to help if you want to flash/root/install custom rom, given that you have little experience with android.

U remind me of myself 2 years back when I was equally inquisitive, enthusiastic but lacking knowledge...
First of all... There is no problem whatsoever if you remain on stock(yes u r right official) Samsung ics provided you don't do factory reset ahead.
2. U need to familiarize yourself with android terminology such as rooting, flashing custom (yes again u r right tweaked) roms, recovery mode, download mode, full wipe, Odin, directly/not directly root able roms etc etc... I am not trying to psyche you out but just giving a word of caution. Unless you know all of these terminologies well (you will get lot of reading on xda on each of this) , PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING. By anything I mean even reverting to GB. U must have updated from GB to iCS OTA (over the air) that is on device itself but this rversal won't be easy unless u fully know what u r doing... so first familiarize urself and then get into it.
3. As regards battery life on stock ics , you can use app named juice defender (available on play store) it has lot of options for battery saving. Besides check if GPS and wifi options are not switched on when not in use... some apps are battery hoggers. Check battery usage under settings ---- battery to see how its doing.
4. There are few safe ics kernels available like what has been told u before by some people in this thread... I would strongly suggest Cm9 or any cm9 based rom like asylum (btw Cm stands for cyanogenmod ) which are smooth and safe & yes extremely battery efficient too.
5. Lastly, I will pm you one apk file which will help you know whether your phone has a brick bug or not... do uninstall that application after you check it. For installing any external app (apk file) you need to go in settings ---- security --- and tick unknown sources

Nopes... rooting is gaining administrator rights over your phone. In simple terms , being able to access system folder on your phone... Beware, rooting voids warranty.. Please refer Dr. ketan's guide on rooting note on other thread... That's best

And i have already checked the article which helps you to check if your handset is affected or not and what i could understand was that we just have to install the application and then run the application and will generate a result
But what after that?
I mean how ill i come to know which files to look for which will tell us if its affected or not

It will throw up the result after checking.. u need not look for anything... it will tell u if ur phone is prone to brick bug.. check it urself. Have sent u the apk file already through pm (personal message).
This will just tell you if you are really prone to this bug, nothing beyond that. If you are then you have three options:
1. Stick to stock ics rom but don't do full wipe again
2. Revert to stock GB through Odin
3. Switch to safe ics kernel (and enjoy lovely ics experience without boring Samsung touchwiz)
For the last you will have to root your phone for remaining, rooting not required.

What ROM are you on exactly??I've heard this brick issue is solved in the ROMS released last month.With CF-root 5.6 it's even safe to wipe.But no one dares to try apparently so it needs confirmation.

I am on 4.0.3

[Q] First-Time Custom ROM&/Kernel, need Answers

Hello
I've spent the last 24 hours browsing the O2x section of XDA, and decided that I might change the ROM and/or kernel. I'm considering either Paranoid Android or DjangoManouche ROMs with the KingOfBirds Kernel (If i go with DM) or Kowalski Kernel. However, I have some questions that I just can't find the yes/no answer for. Would anyone be able to answer these for me?..
1. I am running Stock Rooted ICS V30A with CWM v6.0.1.5, busybox and adb installed, which I assume I achieved through steps 3 and 8 on the AIO toolkit because I didn't do anything else.
Does this translate to "I am on the new partition layout with EXT4, have cwm recovery and can proceed to install kernels and ROMS for the new partition layout"?
2. I generally use my p990 for gaming, movies and internet yet still using it as a phone at school. None of the kernels (Kowalski's or KingOfBirds) I am looking at using state whether or not they have Tegra H/W acceleration support, which I do not want to loose. Do the above/all kernels for the p990 support H/W acceleration? :fingers-crossed:
3. Do the kernels and ROMs above still allow me to edit vold.fstab and have a 32gb internal memory from my sd card?
4. I see a lot of people saying CM10 is the best, but a lot of posts with questions and fixes for bugs with it. Any users of this one able to tell me if it is stable and would be suitable for me (see question 2)?
And if you are using DM or Paranoid Android, what are they like for someone who wants a nice fast stable O2X?
5. Will backing my apps up with Titanium and zipping my internal storage be enough to save my game data? $9m on Hill Climb Racing I don't want to loose.
6. When I am changing, should I format my phone in cwm, and then flash the kernel after ROM? (eg DM -> KingOfBirds)

1) you are on the new bootloader and should flash rom's for this particular setting(this doesn't necessarily mean you can't go back to the old bootloader-search for unbrick tutorial in development section)
2) from what i know they do(someone correct me if i'm wrong)
3)i don't know
4)i can assure you that official cm10 is an excellent rom and you should try it ) (i for one never had any major problems(bug call,bsod) and will return to it after some testing )
5) i think it will do just fine

I don't think that h/w acceleration is something that lacks in the post-cm9 roms. After lg released both official ics, sources and our cm device maintainer aremcee(ricardo) got hold of them all stock roms and cm variants have hwa. I can confirm that tonyp, in his ParanoidAndroid has the option to assign which app to use hwa

Cool ok, Thanks again Just one last question - should I install kernels before/after zip if not specified by creator?I think I'm going to try pengus77's kernel and CM10 build for the new bootloader.

Flash the kernel after you're done with the rom. Cheers!

That was the last question hopefully Backing up my phone atm (done cwm, titanium and AIO backups, i should be covered ) and then I'm going to shoot this rom and kernel at it. I'll post back how it goes.

[Q] What is the best ROM for locked bootloader

Hello every one. I know my question is tiring and I know it may have been answered like a gazillion times before. But sadly I am not a regular here at the x8/w8 forums. Sorry my main forum is SE x10 and I know my way pretty well over there. But today my mother came into my room screaming that her x8 has become annoyingly laggy and often hangs up by itself etc etc.
So I thought that a custom ROM would give that old thing some more life to save me from the fatal nagging. But uppon searching your forums I saw that most ROMs require an unlocked bootloader which I cannot do because the x8 I am holding is 11W47 and I do not wish to take that risk.
So to make a long story short what is the best ROM available for x8 in locked bootloader mode?
I saw that many people say they use GingerDX but when I found GingerDX's thread I saw it now requries an unlocked bootloader and works on nAa kernel. Does it also work on stock kernel with locked bootloader or not? So if you could help me and shed some light cause I feel kinda lost and time is pressing...

gingerdx still has stock version, iirc. check its dl page. also, yiu may want to go froyo for speed since your on stock kernel. in that case try froyopro or froyobread (i honestly prefer the latter).

Please avoid these questions. Try some out for yourself, and decide. The reason behind this is not everyone uses their phone on a certain ROM in the same way. Therefore what one person likes may not be necessarily what you like, and at the end of the day you will have to resort to testing other ROMs. So yeah, asking this question is basically pointless, and not asking it can save space. But nevertheless, your signature amuses me too.

He won't have the time to test the ROMs properly because the phone is not his. Under other circumstances I would agree with you completely - some people are way too lazy to experiment.
That being said, I don't think you would be disappointed with any of the ROMs cascabel mentioned. All offer a fully working phone, they are very stable, and work great even with stock kernel. In my opinion, you need not look any further. Download any of them and you're done.

Thanks @cascabel I found the GingerDX stock kernel version through their site. I have downloaded already and I will atempt a flash later this evenign.
Also I tried to find the FroyoBread as you instructed, I found the thread but the download links were broken. Uppon clicking they were leading to a custom .exe downloader which I suspect was malware or something. So if you have a working .zip of that ROM I would like to have a try as well. Nevermind found it through another post!
I also want to agree with @xWhiskey on that matter. I am not asking for the best ROM for me who I am very particular into what I need (e.g. multitasking, gaming experience and all that). I asked the for the best ROM in terms of stability and recomendation for every day use so that a 45yr old lady like my mother (whose phone I am holding atm) can use it without incidents.
I am not bored to experiment myself on my phone. I have changed almost every available ROM on my x10 but now time is limited cause I can't leave that woman without communication for days. That's why I asked for you suggestions.

I've installed many roms on my stock kernel x8. I found this rom today & installed it. great, smooth & fast with the ICS look experience on any stock/unlocked booatloader. & also battery use is very low:

that's cm7, not ics. and its theme is jb. there's no ics for stock kernel.

yeah i know. i didn's say that this rom is ICS. i just said this is to experience ICS on your device just cuz of ICS & JB theme. but of course it is android 2.3.7 based on CM7.
however i changed it to ICS look to make it more clear & also tnx for your attention.
