If you are running stock ICS(which I'm sure you are) you should assume that you are affected by the bug.
Refrain from doing factory reset using the STOCK/CWM recovery as this will trigger the bug even on STOCK recovery. If you have CWM do not do a NANDROID RESTORE.
If you are rooted i suggest flashing a safe custom kernel, a good one that I can
recommend for solid battery life and balanced performance is Speedmod k3-3 just look for it on the development section.
If you don't like custom kernels and prefer stock just do not do the ones I've mentioned above. If you really need to do a factory reset do it on Gingerbread.
Regarding the battery life, there are many factors to consider. First thing that you need to check if your phone is going into deep sleep. Download cpuspy on play store and report back here so we can help you.
HOLY CRAPPPPPP
Well i have already done the FACTORY RESET 2 times but now its working fine so far
So what should i do now?????????????????????????
Also i would like to know if i can switch back to gingerbread os using Skies software?????????????????
You cant use Kies but Id recommend using ODIN because its faster and safer.
Check out dr.ketans guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997, the man is a genius.
His English isnt great, but essentially
Download ODIN
Download whichever stock rom you want (GB)
Set phone to download mode
Connect to Odin
and flash.
His instructions are a lot more detailed (maybe to much so). But if you do this, the dangerous kernel will be gone and youll be safe.
I know where you are coming from being fairly new to the android scene. Have been in it now for about six months and i would consider myself fairly literate. From what you were saying you updated your phone to the official ics version for your phone. Well... The first thing you need to do my friend is read, read, and read some more. Alot of what i know and have learned has been from researching these forums and the web. Rootgalaxynote.com is pretty good for noobs as it usually has videos showing you how to do things step by step but you should also read some of the faq's about rooting and flashing on this site. If i were in your shoes the first thing that i would do would be the following;
1.) root the device using Dr. Keetans method on this site. If you havent done this it wouuld be a good place to egt started. His method will not trigger your phones counter.
2.) I would revert the phone back to its earlier version which would be gingerbread. You can do this by looking in the stock gingerbread roms section under android development on this site. Our fellow senior members have made it fairly easy to find and after reading you should have a pretty good idea of what to do.
3.) Install a kernel that is safe for ics roms such as franco kernel or abyssnote kernel. This should be fairly easy for you to do just make sure you do tue steps exactly as they describe or else you will mess the phone up.
4.) After that you can pick out a custom ics rom which if you are looking for optimal battery consumption this would be the best way to go about it as official ics rom consumes a substantial amount more battery than the sleak, lean more refined custom roms out there. Just be carefull what you choose as some are full of bugs and features not working.
The main thing here is to cover alot of ground and do your homework. Research is key and you always want to stick with sites like xda and a few others. Xda may not be the most user friendly site out there but it contains a wealth of information and iw where the best of the best come together. Hope this helps my friend.

If you can still run it fine, then you're good. But from now on refrain from doing things on the recovery until you're on a safe kernel. Some users reported that they were able to do a factory reset to the nth time before encountering the brick. Meaning you can factory reset 999 times and get away with it and on the 1000th time, brick ur device seriously god knows when it will happen.
Just stay away from CWM or Stock recovery for now if you don't know what you're doing just to be safe.
P.S. ICS is nothing to be scared of if you know what you're doing. Do a little research about the hardbrick bug good place
to start reading about it is this POST
Well i completely agree with you mate and i need to do a lot of homework before i make any change. However since i am very new to the terminology used in ANDROID so would like to ask you if there is any website which can explain me a lil bit about these terminologies so that i know what everbody is talking about or is it that i should simply go through the forums and then join all the bits and pieces to get an idea about the terms used.
Also i would like to ask you that "ODIN" is it like another software which is used to flash the FIRMWARE

hmm. website... ? well you can start on this website http://developer.android.com/about/index.html and don't forget our ever loved website.. (XDA-DEV)...
Just by snooping, hanging around, munch and digest all you can and soon you'll be able to pick some neat tricks in learning android terminologies in no time at all.
ODIN (PC /Mobile) is a very neat indispensable tool for custom room makers and flashers... With this tool you can always at your disposal.. whilst jump from one custom rom to another, which ever your choice or liking. Changing ROMS is akin to Flashing.. so if you flash a ROM, you are changing your current ROM to whatever ROM you would like to have it installed on your phone.
Every custom ROM has its highlights and lowlights... pick what suits you best and your good to go after. Flashing ROMs with Gingerbread support (if your still in stock GB), assures you no brick at all... Now on the other hand, if your already in ICS(Stock) and would like to flash custom roms with iCS support.. then I do warn you to be wary of it. A lot of people have fallen and have been bitten by the hardbrick bug... Just always be extra careful in doing it.
Cheers bud!
First of all i really thank everyone for their help considering that i am a noob when it comes to android
2ndly i am alos getting an impression that Gingerbread is a better bet as of now till there is a permanent fix for the Bug and secondly i am getting an impression that GB was much better when it comes to the battery backup
Correct me if i am wrong
Alos a clarification
Stock rom means the firmware from SAMSUNG?Am i correct?
Custom rom means that it has been tweaked to avoid any known issues?Am i correct?
Also if i change from custom to stock riom does that hamper the warrenty or not?

Yes! Flash it back to Stock Rom and unroot it. You should be good to go.
You should not worry too much about the bricking bug. If you stay on stock rom and your phone gets bricked you are covered by the warranty. It is not your fault that the phone has that problem.
I also recommend that you ask some friend that has experience to help if you want to flash/root/install custom rom, given that you have little experience with android.
i have just checked in and found this link "Root Your Phone"
This means he is going back to a particular version
Right?

Dilpreet,
U remind me of myself 2 years back when I was equally inquisitive, enthusiastic but lacking knowledge...
First of all... There is no problem whatsoever if you remain on stock(yes u r right official) Samsung ics provided you don't do factory reset ahead.
2. U need to familiarize yourself with android terminology such as rooting, flashing custom (yes again u r right tweaked) roms, recovery mode, download mode, full wipe, Odin, directly/not directly root able roms etc etc... I am not trying to psyche you out but just giving a word of caution. Unless you know all of these terminologies well (you will get lot of reading on xda on each of this) , PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING. By anything I mean even reverting to GB. U must have updated from GB to iCS OTA (over the air) that is on device itself but this rversal won't be easy unless u fully know what u r doing... so first familiarize urself and then get into it.
3. As regards battery life on stock ics , you can use app named juice defender (available on play store) it has lot of options for battery saving. Besides check if GPS and wifi options are not switched on when not in use... some apps are battery hoggers. Check battery usage under settings ---- battery to see how its doing.
4. There are few safe ics kernels available like what has been told u before by some people in this thread... I would strongly suggest Cm9 or any cm9 based rom like asylum (btw Cm stands for cyanogenmod ) which are smooth and safe & yes extremely battery efficient too.
5. Lastly, I will pm you one apk file which will help you know whether your phone has a brick bug or not... do uninstall that application after you check it. For installing any external app (apk file) you need to go in settings ---- security --- and tick unknown sources
PS: Do click Thanks if I have been of any help mate
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Nopes... rooting is gaining administrator rights over your phone. In simple terms , being able to access system folder on your phone... Beware, rooting voids warranty.. Please refer Dr. ketan's guide on rooting note on other thread... That's best

". Lastly, I will pm you one apk file which will help you know whether your phone has a brick bug or not... do uninstall that application after you check it. For installing any external app (apk file) you need to go in settings ---- security --- and tick unknown sources:"
Thanks for the info mate
And i have already checked the article which helps you to check if your handset is affected or not and what i could understand was that we just have to install the application and then run the application and will generate a result
But what after that?
I mean how ill i come to know which files to look for which will tell us if its affected or not
I am not aware as to which all files to look for
Please help me
It will throw up the result after checking.. u need not look for anything... it will tell u if ur phone is prone to brick bug.. check it urself. Have sent u the apk file already through pm (personal message).
This will just tell you if you are really prone to this bug, nothing beyond that. If you are then you have three options:
1. Stick to stock ics rom but don't do full wipe again
2. Revert to stock GB through Odin
3. Switch to safe ics kernel (and enjoy lovely ics experience without boring Samsung touchwiz)
For the last you will have to root your phone for remaining, rooting not required.
PS: Please press Thanks button if I have helped you anyway

Hello there,
Here's my situation: I'm still on Froyo JPY stock (unrooted) and have been reading extensively in this forums for quite a long time now.
I have various issues with my current configuration, the most prominent being fast battery drain (my phone has never lasted more than approx. 18hours), slow gps fix, occasional crashes and sometimes slow responses. Apart from that I dig the idea of a different lock-screen, VoodooSound for better audio recording quality while shooting videos at concerts, nice themes etc. etc.
Now I've looked into Virnik0's step-by-step guide and this sounds all very understandable and should give me a rooted 2.3.3 stock with SuperCurio's VoodooKernel (thank you in advance for such a clear guide).
However I'm still hesitating to upgrade for various reasons, and I hope someone can clear up some of these for me and might give me their general opinion.
1. Going from Froyo to Gingerbread, I feel like a full wipe would be necessary (or nicer and cleaner), am I right? How would I go about that before the update? (If I wait until the Kies Update, will this wipe my phone automatically?)
2. With the update, will I get the SamsungApps again with 2.3.3 that came with my phone on Froyo?
3. What's up with the issues in the 2.3.3 version, can they be fixed without too much understanding of mounting and rootexplorer etc.? (You read so much about issues like Swype, GoogleMaps, Battery Drain etc. It's hard to decide whether the new version will meet my needs or make things worse)
Now as an alternative, do you guys think flashing a custom Kernel like Voodoo (Froyo Versions) togehter with a less battery draining modem would already solve some, or all of my issues?
I am just quite confused with all the options and new information everyday and I don't want to mess up anything. This being said, I can easily access both Recovery and Download Mode with the 3-button combos (kind of an intermediate newbie here, i guess )
Well all opinions and answers are very much appreciated.
Kind regards.
Point one gingerbread is BETA .
Point two using the unofficial methods may brick your phone and will certainly void warranty .
Point three using unofficial roms means kies no longer updates .
Point four the Samsung apps you get are in the main the same .
Point four the majority of reported bugs are either bad flash or idiot using the phone .
Your choice to proceed .
Personal route would be to follow Virnik0's step-by-step guide. But stop before Installing Darky rom .
Instead go to Rom Kitchen and build a rom .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Stock with WIPE Kernel Chainfires .and all other apps available .
when thats done install CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
Followed by if required XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock
jje
Thanks for your swift reply, it is much appreciated.
Just for my understanding: The procedure you recommend sounds a little "double" to me:
If I follow Virnik0's guide until step 20 (right before Darky ROM), my phone has already been flashed with stock firmware including bootloaders + CFRoot Kernel + VoodooKernel (supercurio).
After that you mean go to ROM Kitchen (the new Beta I suppose?) and stock again this time with WIPE and Chainfire's Kernel. After that again with CFRoot Kernel?
I am confused. What is the purpose of this. Besides that, can you point me to the XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
Not if its already flashed you dont need them just pick what you want .
I probably stopped as soon as i had 2.3 installed and then went rom kitchen etc .
Just stop before the post that says install Darky rom and you should be fine .
XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
You will have to search i have deleted all my SGS 1 links .
jje
I think the point he was trying to make was that you can build a rom to suit your needs in the kitchen. If u want sammy apps you can include them, if u don't you don't have to.there are many custom roms out there too. alot off which strip out the crap from samsung. I personally use debusrom but this does not have samsung apps. it does however have the aosp lockscreens. Its all down to what you want. Which is why the kitchen may be a better option for you, right down to the modem you wish to use.

oh man ur always here to answer people's quesion u got thanks from me
now commenting on the original post, the only reason for me stay away from the gb roms is the call recording function which is unavailable yet in gb roms (apart from miui which is awesome but unstable according my experience )
MIUI is not unstable, it just has a few minor bugs, biggest one being battery drain. everything works as it should do, ive been using it since rc3 and i aint going back..... ever lol

wat about the compass+accelerometre+occasional restarts+ laggy 3g+imei issues ?
Right, ive had a i9000 for 5 months or so, and ever since i got it, ive found it to be slow, at times laggy. And hate alot of the crap samsung put on it.Which ive not even used.
I reckon its about time i start to make the most of my phone, but dont really know where to start, with these custom roms and rooting and what not.
I basically want it to run smoothly and possibly add a tweaks/features to it which could possibly improve it. However i remember reading somewhere, that ill lose the camera features if i install a custom rom. :l (i could be talking from my arse here)
Also i read that android 4.0 is coming or has come out. Would i be able to upgrade my phone to it ? and should i ?? If not what is the best rom to flash which will make my phone faster and smoother.
Is there anything at all to make it significantly faster, or is it limited by hardware :/
Im currently on:
kernal version 2.6.29
firmware 2.1 -update1
Which i havnt messed with since i got the phone.
Thanks, and sorry for the daft questions.

OK, here we go...
1. First of all you need to root your device to install a custom rom or kernel. So first root your device with the above thread (cf-root).
2. Choose any rom from so many roms available all over xda. Choose only from the topic which is under your device's category, not from other device's rom, lol.
To do this you need Odin(use search)
3. Once done you will have custom rom and also custom kernel if you wish.
After these you can go for lagfix, like changing from rfs to ext4.
Best of luck.
Thanks, so after ive rooted with cf-root. do i have to install a custom rom and custom kernel, both ?
And which is considered the best rom and kernel ?
thanks
regards
Hey Skweezer,
Recommend you start with these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939752
and:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
They will tell you about how to connect your phone to your PC (Samsung USB drivers + adb), 3 button mode (how to avoid bricking your phone), backing up important/unrecoverable data (like your EFS block!), and what (in general) needs to be done to flash custom firmware.
After that, you should be able to pretty much recover from any error (like unplugging your phone mid flash). Now you can go ahead and root your phone and start exploring the wonderful word of custom roms! As for which one is the best, that's like asking "how long is a piece of string?" Some people prefer speed and cutting edge, others value battery life and stability, some aim for the middle of the road.
Personally I've tried tegrak kernel and was really impressed with the speed improvement! However, the limited app space finally turned me back to other kernels. I found the rest to be pretty much six in one, half dozen in the other (ie all about the same)... so pick one you like and just go for it... use it for a while and if it's not to your liking, flash again
Just a quick rundown on android for you... firmware 2.1 = Eclair, 2.2 = Frozen Yoghurt, 2.3 = Gingerbread, 3.0 = Honeycomb (tablet only version of android) and 4.0 = Ice Cream Sandwich (unify android for phone/tablet/tv again). There is a HUGE performance increase from going stock 2.1 to 2.3! so even if you just upgrade to Samsung's Gingerbread release (2.3.3 I believe?) you will notice better performance. Doing lagfix, kernel tweaks, etc is just icing on top of the cake. However, you'll find once you start tweaking, you won't go back to stock
Well, easiest way of starting is installing KIES and letting it update your phone. That's the official way and you won't have to bother with details like kernels, roms, bootloaders, etc and won't void your warranty (if that's the case).
You'll probably be left with with some 2.3.x version. Might as well make a backup from your stuff before upgrading, kies sucks in a general way, but may help you with that.
From that point on, if you still want to press further into customization goodness, there are PLENTY to chose from.
There are mainly 2 kinds of roms:
- Samsung based (someone picks up a sock samsung rom and modifies it with scripts, kernels, themes, apps, etc). These are most of the ones you'll find in the development section of this forum.
- not samsung based (like Cyanogen e MIUI). These are built from Google's sources directly and totally skip samsung. Therefore, samsung apps most likely won't work here. Everything else does.
Personally i'd recommend Cyanogen 7.1 stable as your next rom. It's an extremely optimized and wildly popular rom, with plenty of options that you won't find in any stock rom. They have their own forum i recommend you to look up if you're going their way.
Whatever you do, GET AWAY FROM THAT 2.1
Cheers for alll the replies guys. Im first going to just update via kies. To an official 2.3
If im not happy with that then ill try a custom rom and rooting.
If only it was as simple as jailbreaking and iphone. lool
Right, ust updated to latest version via kies. And instantly alot better, smoother. Has some of those things bulit into the system which i always though were missing.
Ill try it for a week, and see if theres anything i need, or think is missing. Then i might go custom. But right now im happy with it on the latest official version.
Thank you guys, i think you've made me sort of like android a bit more.
Hi Guys,
My note is arriving tomorrow and im pretty excited. i don't own any andriod phone and is really a noob in this.. but i plan to update from GB to ICS and have been reading/googling to do that.
Many people suggest rooting but i saw someone stating that updating can be done without rooting(Something about odin..). Now im confused. Do i really need to root in order to get updated to ICS?
i heard ICS stunner 5 is pretty good, is there any known bugs or watever features not working properly? is there anything i should look out for when updating to ICS?(i dont want to brick my phone on the same day i got this note)
Thanks a million

Rooting is absolutely not a must. You'll get your OTA stock ICS update even if unrooted.

I'd stay away from Beta ICS releases for a while if I were you. There's a lot to learn before one can cope with their maintenance, workarounds and fixings. You'll get there when you're ready.
Hope this helps.
When you flash a repack which injects SU (root) then you do not need to root your phone prior, but that will increase your custom count, which could be removed using triangle away.
Is root necessary? I say the answer is personal. It is your call at the end of the day. but once you take the plunge its wide and deep sea out there , you just keep swimming.
So as Chasmodo suggested, just make yourself comfortable with GB then root, unroot, flash a custom ROM and then take a plunge into the ICS.
I think the main thing that will decide whether you need to root or not, is whether any apps you want to use require root.
I rooted my phone so I can use Market Enabler, Adaway, Titanium backup... can't remember what else off the top of my head.
If none of the apps you want to use require root, there really isn't any reason to do so.
Android phone without root is like watching porn with screen turned off.
Rooting is not a must, it's something that you should though. As for custom ROMs, you need root, for Over The Air (OTA) updates or to flash a stock ROM through PC Odin, you don't need root.
I wouldn't advice you to actually stay away from ICS ROMs (Stunner and Imilka's CM9 especially) but yes, they're more complex to flash than say a regular GB Custom ROM. But it's all pretty easy and straightforward these days so don't worry and flash whatever you want. It's pretty hard to brick GN.
Just remember, whatever you flash, never forget to make a backup of your current system. How? You'll learn it soon.
As stated previously if you're new to droid stay with stock, ics update is coming soon. So sit back and enjoy.

As a noob i would strongly suggest you do NOT root..
rational as follows:
1. You will get ICS soon enough
2. If you dont root, the chances of you shooting yourself in the foot is really small.
3. You should not do things if you dont know a) what you are doing, and b) what can go wrong and c) How to get out of it
4. The number of people who know what they are doing are 1% of the people who think they know what they are doing.
5. there is a whole lot of hurt when folks in 4. above go off and do 3. above.
6. You can't spell zerglings
Look.. You will have so much fun with the Note as stock and with the soon ICS, and need to learn so much about efficient use, setup and customisation of your new toy (never mind the 50apps you download) that you have plenty of time to educate about the pitfalls & benefits yourself along the way .. before you post your..
"i think i just bricked my Note"..
thread.. and the objective is simply NOT to be one of those folks..
Completely agree with Mystic38. My first post here at XDA was 'Bought and bricked' it was my first android phone.
Later I came to know more advantages of root - not just changing fonts. lol
Reasons to consider root
1. Hide ads in angrybirds (yeah! without disabling data everytime you play it)
2. Clockwork recovery
3. Custom roms
4. Kernels
5. More secure --- PDroid, LBE Privacy
6. Scripts and tweaks
This will go on and on...
Take your time, read alot and when you are confident ROOT!
+1 for above, and then when ICS is official and a little stable throw all away and lets hope there will be miui
Thanks guys, i think you all are right, its better to stay put and learn more before jumping in and shoot myself in my foot or do something foolish heheh.
i guess im gona stick with GB until the official ICS is out.
and gona THANKS +1 everyone for the replies
u guys are awesome
same with TS here. I already spend many weeks reading regarding root It's just a matter of time... we will be the next.

This way you stay a noob forever!
1. You will get CRAPPY ICS soon enough.
2. Same for if you root. Rooting isn't dangerous, flashing custom ROMs is but even that ain't dangerous if you use the right files and follow the steps.
3. Completely agree.
4. Where did you get that stat from? NOT TRUE!
6. Yeah, don't root if you can't spell that. I can't!
It's pretty hard to brick a GN IMO.
@Sujal, Don't be mean dude, 'Every phone is hard to brick if you know what you are doing'.
I consider myself advanced user, Note is not my first android phone but my first thought was not to 'play' with it like previous phones.

I'm not being mean bro.
I had a Galaxy S II before I had my note. I also never rooted it but maybe because it was stolen in 9 days. (still hurts :/)
But, everyone has different opinions. I personally feel it's worth playing with it, no matter how long you've had it for. Stock Samsung firmwares are BAD, this is the reason I suggest people to flash custom ROMs, be it GB or even ICS.
And yes, it's hard to brick any phone if you know what you're doing.

I was rooted with ICS and went back to stock. I like stock because I don't have to spend any time working on the phone for something I don't really loose. The only thing I really like was speeding up my note but I got to say that really doesn't make much difference in everyday use. ICS should come soon and no matter what has been said, you can't get the update form Samsung if you are rooted.

Oh, you can't get the update if rooted?
Wanna bet a couple of bucks that a fully functional stock ICS Rom will be posted here before you even get a whiff of OTA/Kies update?

I was trying to say getting ics from Samsung as a stock download. One can seemingly get anything on this great site.
i have come from a htc hd2 so i like to change roms alot.
what should i do with the galaxy note ?
i would like ICS so what are the steps ?
any help please
Have a good search round this forum and make sure you understand clearly how everything works before you decide to start flashing, I came from the HTC Desire and the Galaxy Note is a whole different ball game. Enjoy you new Galaxy Note
is the official ics update any good ?
what does rooting do ?
I personally didn't like the official ICS update, that is when I decided to flash a custom ROM.
Rooting gives you more control over your phone, lets you install apps like "Titanium Backup" that require root permissions to run.
i have the la6 kernel
im lost

Apparently this really depends on your location. For example the one Samsung released here (France, 4 months after being announced, too) was so broken it bricked a number of terminals and was subsequently withdrawn. With no word of when a fix will come.
Apparently other areas had working systems. One would think it would just be a matter of strings to translate and a few apps to package, so it's all very puzzling to someone who isn't familiar with Android (I've been intimately familiar with Linux for more than 20 years, and Unix before that, but I still don't get it).
And then, as you'll see by browsing the forums, many people seem to have issues with ICS. Issues that (IMO) just don't seem to make much sense in a system that would have been tested for a couple days by an intern somewhere...
OTOH, many people apparently have no issues.
So as with everything on the network, I suppose YMMV, take it with a grain of salt, yada yada... void where applicable.
See if anything is reported about your proposed (if any) update. Then decide if it's worth it (maybe it is).

Same as on any other terminal ? Lets you access functions that are typically "off limits". Among the most useful ones, you can now read/write anywhere. Which means you can allow/deny anything for any application. And notably block all those silly annoying bundled apps so they won't want to update any more, or, if you like, even start (a process known as freezing).
Have a look at the videos in my signature once..
For Rom official one is good but custom ones are great..
All roms are unique in their own way...the ones that stand out as totally awesome are Paranoid Android and TMT Hybrid IMUI...
Its your choice...
thanks guys

yes, just be careful, follow instruction to the dot, and don't take any shortcuts,
also, it's good to have tb backup, as additional security precaution

1. probably, but make sure in paranoid thread,
2. I assume you have done cwm backup, which will be rather useless when switching ROMs, having tb (i.e.Titanium Backup) backup you can generally restore your apps and data between roms (except for the system ones)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
yes all backed up with cwm and tb.

And that was the right thing to have for the time being, too bad you hurried on to ICS. In my opinion, when you have a new phone, you have to know it, enjoy it, love it ( ? ), installed a couple of hundred apps, and then, after being more than familiar whith it, it would be time to upgrade it, tweak it, etc., so the change could be apreciatte. It's like eating always the desert at first, withouth eating the soup and the salad.
As for rooting, if you had to ask, you probably did't need to root, but since that's already done, I'll give you a hint. There is one VERY interesting thing about rooting which anyone would find usefull. The posibility of using a Firewall. In this way, you could not only block those annoying ads (and save a little battery since the ads have to download from Internet). You can also protect your device from troyan / spy applications, which are increasingly expanding in android. For example, a simple sound board app, or a screen saver, ¿why should it use your internet connection? ¿To what ends?
Enjoy the Note, it's a hell of a phone.
Hello every one. I know my question is tiring and I know it may have been answered like a gazillion times before. But sadly I am not a regular here at the x8/w8 forums. Sorry my main forum is SE x10 and I know my way pretty well over there. But today my mother came into my room screaming that her x8 has become annoyingly laggy and often hangs up by itself etc etc.
So I thought that a custom ROM would give that old thing some more life to save me from the fatal nagging. But uppon searching your forums I saw that most ROMs require an unlocked bootloader which I cannot do because the x8 I am holding is 11W47 and I do not wish to take that risk.
So to make a long story short what is the best ROM available for x8 in locked bootloader mode?
I saw that many people say they use GingerDX but when I found GingerDX's thread I saw it now requries an unlocked bootloader and works on nAa kernel. Does it also work on stock kernel with locked bootloader or not? So if you could help me and shed some light cause I feel kinda lost and time is pressing...
Thanks in adavance,
best regards.
gingerdx still has stock version, iirc. check its dl page. also, yiu may want to go froyo for speed since your on stock kernel. in that case try froyopro or froyobread (i honestly prefer the latter).
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
LOL..
I like your signature very much..
Please avoid these questions. Try some out for yourself, and decide. The reason behind this is not everyone uses their phone on a certain ROM in the same way. Therefore what one person likes may not be necessarily what you like, and at the end of the day you will have to resort to testing other ROMs. So yeah, asking this question is basically pointless, and not asking it can save space. But nevertheless, your signature amuses me too.
He won't have the time to test the ROMs properly because the phone is not his. Under other circumstances I would agree with you completely - some people are way too lazy to experiment.
That being said, I don't think you would be disappointed with any of the ROMs cascabel mentioned. All offer a fully working phone, they are very stable, and work great even with stock kernel. In my opinion, you need not look any further. Download any of them and you're done.
Well first of all thank you all for your replies.
Thanks @cascabel I found the GingerDX stock kernel version through their site. I have downloaded already and I will atempt a flash later this evenign.
Also I tried to find the FroyoBread as you instructed, I found the thread but the download links were broken. Uppon clicking they were leading to a custom .exe downloader which I suspect was malware or something. So if you have a working .zip of that ROM I would like to have a try as well. Nevermind found it through another post!
I also want to agree with @xWhiskey on that matter. I am not asking for the best ROM for me who I am very particular into what I need (e.g. multitasking, gaming experience and all that). I asked the for the best ROM in terms of stability and recomendation for every day use so that a 45yr old lady like my mother (whose phone I am holding atm) can use it without incidents.
I am not bored to experiment myself on my phone. I have changed almost every available ROM on my x10 but now time is limited cause I can't leave that woman without communication for days. That's why I asked for you suggestions.
Best regards again!
p.s. I love my signature too!
good to hear. hope your mom likes the rom you decide to flash on her phone.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
Yep
I've installed many roms on my stock kernel x8. I found this rom today & installed it. great, smooth & fast with the ICS look experience on any stock/unlocked booatloader. & also battery use is very low:

except some bugs that didn't bother me so i didn't left over this rom. suggest you to try it too...
good luck:silly:
