My sister has been suffering with the Captivate's stock rom for the past year, and she's bugging me to upgrade it for her (she's technologically challenged). I'm lost with all the unfamiliar ROM options over here. I don't care if it's Froyo or Gingerbread, or if there's no longer Dev support for it - I don't plan to touch it once I get it loaded up for her. I just want the most stable ROM I can put on there that will get her through the next year of her contract. Please specify ROM AND version you'd recommend for this purpose. Thanks in advance!

I used Paragon RC6 for a long time and it was very stable and fast. It's a FroYo ROM and development on it is dead.

Just as a heads-up, threads like this usually end up getting shut down fairly fast. I know that isn't what you're hoping for, though, so my advice is to take a look at the roms that have a lot of posts associated with them. They're usually still being attended to, and have good support if something goes haywire. It ends up being a matter of personal choice, so it ultimately has to be up to you.
(That being said, I understand your situation, and I personally put Firefly 3.0 on the phones of people who just wanted something better than stock. Just my two cents. Offer not valid in Svalbard.)
If stock ish looking is your thing. I would recommend Cognition 4.x.x (froyo KB1 base). It was finished in dev tweak for speed and stability and can be Overclocked if you choose to. Also has Voodoo support. As jmtheiss said this probably be locked soon. But I understand where you are coming from.

Thanks for this - I took a better look at Paragon and it sounds like it may fit my needs. I had mainly been looking at Serendipity 6.4 and Firefly because they seem to be 2 of the most popular options, but the Paragon thread makes it sound pretty good as well...
I know these "which rom" threads are frowned upon, but most of us are addicted to flashing our devices and so I couldn't find a relevant discussion here of a good rom to just 'flash and forget.'
My wife ran Andromeda 3 for ever with out a prob. Great battery life, stable, and responsive

firefly 3.0 with onyx kernel got me the BEST battery life ever. (nearly 3 days on extended battery minimal use)for a girl that texts alot that would be a good bet. built on 2.2 android but most girls wont care the difference.

Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!
You can find more information in the ROM thread itself.

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.
I am in search of a new rom for my Captivate. I am a noob dealing with android roms but I use to flash windows roms on my touch HD all the time.
I am looking to update to froyo 2.2 but need help determining which rom to pick. (sick of weighting for the att update)
Things I need working.
1. Bluetooth activated voice commands. (android voice action via BT)
2. Working GPS
3. good battery
4. 3g
5. smooth running
Anyone’s suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you all.

Hi, is very difficult to help you because almost all roms are the same. Some fast, other not so fast but very stable... I've try them all but no one has fullfill my needs. I've been using android since last november (before I use Win Mob on my HTC HD2), right now I'm using axura 2.5, but I've benn having trouble with wifi and since there is no more axura development I have to chose a new one. I hope that samsung will realease soon an oficial upgrade for the captivate, I've always preffer stock's rom's but captivate stock rom is disappointing.
Try Gingerborg 7.5. Very fast, battery lasts very long and quite stable. GPS also locks in pretty good.
This question is asked frequently and its really hard to answer. Its really a matter of preferrence. I-9000 based roms have become very popular due to all the improvements in 2.2.1. I've flashed almost every rom and even though they're all similar there are different advantages to each one. Ex: I ran DG roms for a while and had great performance but very poor battery life. No matter what I did my battery was terrible. Darky's ROM worked great but gave me a sim error multiple times. I decided to stick with Cezar's ROM and I think this is my new permanent ROM. I really like the level of support he offers and all his ROM's are designed for his personal use and they're extremely well put together. I've been on his ROMs for over a month and I have never had issues and battery life is AWESOME. Nothing wrong with other roms bur to put it simply when I flash Cezar's I feel like I'm shopping at wholefoods. Flashing everything else I get a Walmart experience
You want a worry free, fast, stable rom with great battery life flash cezar's. If you like to trouble shoot and experiment try all others. I'm in no way affiliated with Cezar. I just happen to be a huge fan of his work! Hope that helps.
Ps. I'm on Continuum Se all R tweaks enabled. 2 1/2h non stop internet browsing and downloading and I'm sitting and 75% battery. That's UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

What works for my phone may not work as great on your phone. I recommend you try many ROMs, only then will you know what truly works well for your phone.
And i think you posted at the wrong place. haha...
Without a doubt I would say the latest cognition rom available. I flash roms quite often and without a doubt I would say that the latest cognition has been.my.smoothest froyo experience yet.

What's the recommendation for a solid, basic rom I can install on my friend's Captivate? He is most definitely not a power user. He just wants his phone to operate faster and be able to enable wifi tethering. He is currently running on android 2.1, so I figure going up to 2.2 at least will help and I have already rooted it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Probably the most stock-like ROM you could flash would be Cognition. Great ROM, has all the features you could want.
Alternately, you could run Serendipity if you want the Gingerbread look.. Or a CM7 build if you want actual Gingerbread (though buggier than the other ROMs)
Firstly, right here on the front page is a Q&A section of this forum. That's where a question like this should go.
Regarding the answer -- IMHO its so subjective that it'd be hard to recommend anything other than a stable rom that has mass appeal, usually noted by the amount of replies to a roms thread. In short, cognition would be a good starting point. I used that for a while and had very few problems. I upgraded to cyanogen a few days ago and there are certainly some bits (namely network related) but I consider myself a power user so the added features more than makes it worth it.
Well, first off, I would move this to the Q&A thread.
But I would recommend Precision or Serendipity to flash. Use the theme when flashing Precision if you want something all Black/White. If you'd rather have that stock feel, I'd go with Cognition. It's really all just trying out different ROMs and seeing what you like. All three of those are fast and will enable tethering, but yesterday, AT&T announced they will start charging rooted users tethering fees if they catch you doing it. Theoretically, they won't be able to detect the tethering if you stay under 2GB of data, though.
Hope that helped!
It depends on personal preference, wrong section to post in. Just saying and not trying to be rude

Although the Romitchen.org is closed for some time, their captivate section has the most compatible stuff. I have used three different roms from there and all give me full functionality - GPS (for me this works real great with Navigon), Bluetooth, Wifi, Email, Text etc. without any hassle whatsoever.
I currently have a ROm that i built from there that works great....Can post it up if you want it?
Cheers !
Its 2.2.1
Thanks for the replies and my apologies for posting in the wrong forum. Looks like cognition will be the best one to start him out on. Thanks again

I'd recommend either Phoenix or FireFly. Both are rock solid, for the beginners FireFly might be better. They are both very good ROMS, and have great suport

I totally agree with Phoenix or FireFly. Totally stable, fast, and the UI's are great. I also think it's absolutely retarded to repeat the issue with this being in the wrong thread. I swear... some of you have a real issue with power tripping. I'm pretty sure after he read the first post about it he understood pretty well. this is XDA!!! Good job on just throwing out an answer Kangi26! That's what we're all here for. HELP!!!
Designgears makes good roms for those starting off, and good roms, just in general. Back in August when I got my cappy my first rom was I believe his first rom release, [srv] 1.0 or something. It was kinda my gateway drug. But his roms are good for beginners because the process for flashing is very simple, and most of all they're pretty stable. So for people unwilling to do deal with bugs, or are prone to complaining about things they don't want to really understand as yet, designgears offers a variety of solutions.
PS....
just as everyone else has mentioned, make sure to post in the correct section to avoid cluttering the forums.

Does Firefly unlock/enable tethering or will I still need an app like Wireless Tether? (I did read the first few pages of the official firefly thread but did not see the answer there...)

I'm almost 100%, it does. I'm running Phoenix (kind of the big brother to Fire Fly, and it is supported)

Wahoo a best rom thread, Have not seen one of these in awhile.
Ok Well there is no "Best Rom" Just a "Best for you rom". I have my favs like everyone else but your best bet is to try them out as you see one that catches your eye. No one can tell you what rom you would deem best it.
Do we have any of those roms anymore?
Because I had a rom like that a long time ago that wasn't Cyanogen...it was amazing, sold the phone, and now im back to a Captivate again. I'm looking for a rom that is similar to a port from Nexus S. It's happened before, so can i have it again? Looked high and low for those and XDA is like the last forum to have those roms. Now everyone wants 4.0....well the phone isnt made for 4.0...only for 2.3
I dont like touchwiz. just want AOSP 2.3 or 2.2....thats all. Thank you for your help!
Not sure what there is besides CM7. Which is very nice. But I'm sure you could find something by looking/searching in the dev section. And you can't really say this phone isn't meant for ICS. All the hype for ICS is because there is much to be hyped about
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
yep, plenty of good 2.3 in the dev section, just read through them.
However I find that, on my three captivates of varying revisions, I get the best performance out of ICS roms.
Battery, on the other hand, I have been struggling with. I prefer WEUI overall, but I cannot get through the day without 2 sometimes 3 charges. So, currently my primary phone is running ICSSGS RC4.2 with UGKG3 modem on the 850 band. With that I can easily go 10+ hours of my normal use without having to worry about it.
all personal opinion, of course
I just put serendipity 6 on my buddys captivate. I don't know anything about the development for this phone so I kinda had to wing it to pick which rom to put on. He was on eclair . He loves it the new.but my question is, any reason to put serendipity 7 on it instead or any other ROM for that matter? I want to give him the best stability and battery with customization. Any help is.appreciated
I do have to say this was a fun phone to mess around with for the first time

Sorry, there is no quick answer. ROM selection is a personal preference thing.
However there is a thread on xda comparing roms battery performance. If I remember correctly serendipity was among the top. Fasty was up there too.
I'll look for the link when I get home and edit my post.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to leave him with something that it's stable and if serendipity I'd up there.my job is done.thanks man

I found the thread I had mentioned, but it's old. It has been almost a year since there were any constructive posts. It was full of squabbling, so I won't bring it back to life by posting a link to it. Too bad though, cause the guy who started it had good intentions.
Probably best to let this thread die also. Battery / performance comparison threads seem to get ugly after a while.

this phone is almost three + years old. so many ppl have moved to newer versions. those who still has this phone are moved on to ICS (Ice cream Sand-witch (4.0.4) based ROMs. ICS is fast, stable and good on battery as well.
that's why there is no action on GB based ROMS.
I am on Slim ICS and highly recommend it.
until they get the encryption unsuccessful bug worked out that is a pretty good reason to recommend staying with the gingerbread roms
i suggest you go with gingerbread because it was tested that it has a better battery performance plus the graphics drivers upgraded.
Legend 4 is the most active GB ROM with current and helpful developers still active. I run it with no problems.
