ext partition not working - Samsung Galaxy Mini

my ext partition wont be detected on some ROMs!
titanium backup shows a 206mb partition with 48 mb free irrespective of the size of the partition...
this happens on some ROMs...but the partition works well on others
any help?

so best stick to those roms who dont have this problem..........

with darktremor a2sd i know there are some bugs that make the partition size to be displayed incorrectly

if using darktremor, titanium have bug on it.
but actually the prtitions working.

APPS2SD question - Restoring Backup form MyBackUpPro

I'm planning to partition my N1 running CM 5.0.5.3 for Apps2SD as I'm losing space for my apps. I have backups made from MyBackupPro and was wondering if I am to restore my Apps, will it restore on the new apps2sd partition? And will it recognize the apps2sd partition for future backups?

As long as you have an apps2sd rom installed then all apps should install to the EXT2/3/4 partition.
I have backed up and restored 360 apps in total using titanium backup and they all installed to the SD partition.
HTH.
@chobie, I'm not 100% certain... but I don't think MyBackUp Pro will backup apps installed on the SD...
thank you guys for the replies.
So restoring will do it but not sure for backing up in the future yeah?
Will Titanium backup do it though?
yes, titanium backup even works with apps2sd...
not sure if this is the right place but if I partition my sd card through amonra recovery what's a good way to do it for the nexus one?

so i can titanium backup my apps before partitioning for apps2sd then restore them to apps2sd partition after? i guess i should purchase it then T_T
@chobie, titanium will take care of all types of backups and restores for any rooted android phone... it's an amazing app...
@hisoka210, i'm not sure wht you are tryintg to say, but when u partition it from amon_ra's recovery, it is partitioned for the N1... but yes, using amon_ra's recovery is the safest way to partition ur sd card for the N1

Depends on the number of apps you want to install and the size of ur apps... generally, ppl use a 512MB partition... but u could choose what suits u best... and keep in mind, the larger the size of the sd ext partition, the smaller the size of the fat partition...

[Q] HELP TY

CM7 can make you install apps on the sd card, how does it differ from app2sd or app2ext? i have been trying to decide if i should partition my new sd card or its not necessary. There must be an advantage to have app2ext right?
Thank you.
CM7 basically allows you to move all applications using Froyo's app2sd mode. Even ones that have disabled it (like live wallpapers and widgets as those won't work when installed that way).
app2sdext works differently as it will install apps directly to an ext partition on your sdcard (that you manually have to set up). This functionality is NOT build into CyanogenMod, but is easily added with a number of different apps/scripts. This will give you a lot more free space on your phone, and all apps can be installed there regardless of whether they have widgets or have services running. Most app2sdext options will also give you the option of moving the dalvik cache to the sdcard which will save you a substantial amount of space on your internal memory.
Basically, if you want a lot of memory intensive apps, your only decent option with a Nexus One is an app2sdext solution. (I have it with a 1GB partition, and I will soon either need to resize it or delete apps... adding app2sdext was the second best thing I ever did to my phone behind installing CyanogenMod on it.)

I have a class 4 32GB card, and I didn't notice any appreciable difference in speed. I have moved my apps and dalvik cache to the sdcard using DarkTremor's a2sd. I currently have 260 apps installed on my phone, and that is pushing the internal phone space and the 1GB partition I set up for ext. I am about to bug danger-rat for his instructions on how he resized his internal partitions to give the data residing on the phone more space (I will basically shrink the cache partition and I am looking at resizing my ext partition to 1.5GB or 2GB.
I couldn't live without this anymore. I don't know how I went so long without it. It is so nice to just browse the online market and click install on countless apps without worrying about your space.
If you want to try and move the app data (resides in /data/data) to the sdcard, I have heard that it is recommended to have a class 10 card to keep up with speed requirements. I am not sure how many apps support that.

I believe you can. You would have to have a custom recovery. The main thing I am not sure is if it will mount the ext partition. If you have a custom recovery, do a nandroid backup (just in case it doesn't work), flash the zip for DarkTremor, and reboot the phone (the first boot will take longer).

thanks for the reply i think i read on darktremors post class 4 will do for the data2sd. I have class 4 16GB sd card would 1GB good for the ext? ty
It really depends on how much you think you will be installing. I did a 1GB partition on mine, but now that I install most of the Amazon free daily apps, that space is dwindling quickly. I have programs that will resize the partition for me, but most will have to wipe the card and partition it manually. I do have the install location set to automatic, so it allows developers to specify whether they want it in the "internal" (really it is on the sdext partition, but to the phone it is internal) or external using the froyo method. The Angry Bird apps all default to install on the sdcard, so my installed app base is even larger than 1GB.

is it true that cwm sets the partition to ext3 by default? unlike in ra recovery where you still need to convert it? ta
I have heard that it creates it in ext3, but right now, DTa2sd is showing that it is a ext2 partition. I can't figure out how to find out for sure while the card is in the phone. Either way, it is getting mounted as an ext2 partition.
temasek said:

Anyway when u read the ext partition type in android, most likely u will see ext2 if u are using official DT script cuz of the auto syntax it uses.

then it maybe so, this was posted on the darktremor thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14134665#post14134665
Well, whether or not it is formatted as an ext3 partition, Android is still mounting mine as an ext2 partition.
Code:
mount | grep ext
NOTE: the "|" is called a pipe. On the keyboard it is the shift option on the backslash key "\". I don't know exactly where it is on the stock keyboard, but on swype it is located under the "D" key when the keyboard has the shift key pressed and you access it by longpressing.
To get your sdcard to ext3, you just need to turn on journaling. You can do this through adb while in the recovery (because you need the partition unmounted to do this).
Code:
adb reboot recovery
adb shell
mount system
e2fsk /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
tune2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
reboot
Supposedly Android should auto-mount this as ext3 on boot (which you can check with the first command). At that point, I don't think it will matter what a2sd shows. As the writing of the journal (the big thing with ext3, since it helps minimize write errors on a bad shutdown) is done at the OS level, not the a2sd level.

How do I convert my SD card to SD-EXT & swap file WITHOUT losing apps?

Hi,
I have the N1 with SD card in FAT32, and most apps were moved to SD using App2SD, and I am rooted.
I hear that EXT3 or 4 gives me advantages.
How can I convert my current SD card to a partitioned, swapped, EXT3 or 4 card, and keep all my apps working?
Can I just copy the SD contents to my Mac, then use Amon, then restore the SD and it'll all magically work, or will I lose all my apps by copying the SD contents to Mac?
Also please advise the ideal swap size and other sizes when partitioning in Amon.
Can I suggest you titanium backup for prevent losing app's preferences?
Make a full backup of all apps with tb then copy all your sd on computer and you're ready to partition or wipe and flashing all u want!
For me 0mb of swap and 1024mb of ext3/4 works great!! I'm with cg7 so I'm able to use s2e, it's really a greate app, search it on market !

You can definitely copy all of the files on are SD to another computer. I would always backup those up from time to time.
My personal preference is to boot my laptop using a USB drive with Ubuntu on it. Then I can use gpartd to repartition without recopying the data (BACKUP ANYWAY!).
gpartd allows resizing and creating partitions while maintaining the data.
I created a 512MB partition (no swap) and used S2E to move all my apps from the FAT32 partition. Worked great.
Thanks, I tried as you both suggested and succeeded with relatively few problems.
How do I actually click 'Go' in S2E. I have checked the box 'Applications', but I can't see how to actually make it 'Start' moving them. Or does it just happen automagically on reboot?
One added thought--
I prefer sdformatter to format card. I find after redoing sdcard from time to time with this flashing mania, that the phone does not format as cleanly and remnants are left behind--can cause issues

Check the box, then reboot.
And you're good to go.
Remember to move back apps from SD to internal (internal is now your SD-ext)
And don't forget to set install location to internal in CMsettings

If you got a computer with a Linux distribution, you may use gparted and resize your partition without any need to format it entirely ;-)

[Q] Help needed regarding link2sd w.r.t CM 10.1 (4.2.2)

Hi all,
Before i start, lotss of respect and millions of thanks for all the developers for their beautiful ROMs and everyone who are providing with brilliant solutions for almost every problem.
I'm totally new and this is the first time i am typing over here. Please forgive any noob mistakes that i might be doing and i'll make sure the same doesn't happen twice.
Since last couple of weeks i have started exploring my mini and i found the following issue.
At first, i used link2sd on ext2 partitioned sd card (as suggested by a link2sd tutorial) while using stock gingerbread(2.3.6) rom and was successful in installing over 90+ apps with still about 112 mb free in the internal memory.
Everything was smooth and was working fine.
Later, i flashed this Rom "cm-10.1-20130310-NIGHTLY-tass" onto my device and used ext4 partitioned sd card.
I opened link2sd and after specifying the external partition as ext4 and after rebooting the device, i got a warning message telling that link2sd failed to mount the ext4 disk. It instructed that i must reboot and try again.
After the reboot, link2sd detected ext4 partition.
But soon after filling the device with about 78 apps, the internal memory reduced to 60 mb. Also, in between while rebooting, in order to link all the files successfully onto sd ext, few apps would disappear.
Every time at boot the system mentions low internal memory and that some apps would not be working.
Boot takes a lot of time too (about 3-4 minutes).
I am linking dalvik-cache file, application file and the library file
Is there anything that i must and must not do?
Can ext4 partition be used on the mentioned ROM?
Is there any compatibility issue with link2sd on this ROM?
Kindly provide me with any feedback/suggestions.
I would be extremely grateful..
BTW.. amazing ROM.. super smooth and great performance
My first custom ROM and i love almost every bit of it
Aaaah.. now my internal memory has gone to few kb :crying:
is there any other way i can freshly install all my apps without encountering this issue? Now i'm desperate for some help

The only soln to this is flash the rom again and any scirpts like crossbreeder and then flash Int2extn4+
this script moves all your app data to extn. il have installed 20 apps and my internal memory is 1GB
give a try, search in themes and app section(thread by Ashu.bigsmoke) :good:
why d you install so many apps, install apps that are important.
i use lastest antibillos' rom, no partition sdcard, i just move my apps to sdcard using link2sd. i still got almost 30mb on internal memory. i actually can increase the empty space on it, due to some apps which are not recommended to be moved to sdcard, so i didnt move it. by 30mb on my internal, my phone is smooth, this rom is really suit my phone.
well, backinup your apps and restore em whenever you need, uninstall when it is rarely used, is another choice.
*sorry for messy english.
Thanks guys
Will definitely try as per your suggestions and will report my observation..
I was observing that the /data/app folder consisted of actual application files even though i had linked them.
I deleted all the files from that particular folder and linked the applications again. Now i can see about 80mb free.. However, during boot i still get low memory alarm and the internal memory will be almost nil for few minutes. I guess the ext4 partition is not read during boot.
Why's that happening?
I presumed that ext4 partition would be read during boot.

I read about int2ext4+ and i got to know that we need to have 100mb free internal memory for 500mb of ext4 space!!
I currently use about 1.4gb for ext4, this technique makes it impossible for me to use even 500mb of ext4 partitioned space!!
What's the need for 100 mb free space for every 500 mb external space? I didn't quite get that..

Is there a way back to CM 7.2.0

Well I tried different roms and stayed at evervolv (2.6.38.8-evervolv-perdo-ics+; Evervolv-Perdo-2.2.0a6) and I changed the partition sizes via hboot.
Is there a way back to the much faster and less memory intensive CM? Would there be a HBoot so that I get the correct partition sizes?
Or would MIUI v5 3.3.29 a better alternative? But here comes the problem. Seems that a2sd must be installed but there is not stated which ext the partition on the card has to be.
You can always change to any ROM, its not really going back. If you are worried about partition sizes then see the op of the ROM you want and match those recommended sizes or experiment to see what you like best, so long as the system partition fits all you should be fine (but there is more to it then this and as you experiment with partition sizes you'll learn what to change and when)
As for your SD cards ext partition again your choice, this will be where you store your data partition (and sometimes dalvik etc) so you make the size and type what works for you. Personally I always keep a 1gb ext4 partition on all my android sdcards but will change from time to time if needed
