So I tried restoring a nand I made today and got an error while restoring /system. I'm using CWR 5.0.2.6. I'm on leaked 5.7.984 and was trying to restore a nand from the exact same software. Any ideas how to fix this? It flashes a through some .apk's, .odex's, and .ogg's then goes to the below screen.

Any other details would be nice to have, safestrap/bootstrap, any files you edited.
If you're using safestrap, and restoring from a non-safe to a safe system, there could be a problem, you would have to get Hashcode for confirmation though..

Oh, sorry, I thought saying CWR 5.0.2.6 was enough to indicate Koush's modded bootstrapper. But yes, it's bootstrap. I made the nand before i flashed over MavRom to try the tweaked dock addon, it didn't work as I liked, so I tried to restore it, not even 30 mins after making it, and it failed. I talked, on Twitter, to HashCode for a bit and he finally said go talk to Koush, so I plan on doing that later today.

There could be a possibility that its just a bad nandroid backup too..

When I did a restore with the same bootstrapped cwm I got the same error, but I just rebooted my phone anyways and everything was restored.

I am having the exact same issues. Even trying to restore back to stock .890 with root only. Using modded bootstrap which can use bp tool to get into recovery. Emailed clockwork mod twice no answer.

I've tried with multiple backups, and I've used some before so I know they're good.

I got a hold of Koush pretty easily with Twitter. I'm going go make a video of the error here within the next hour or so. Gotta make a nand first, just in case it decides to work this time.

I am experiencing the same error with Droid 3 Bootstrap and 5.7.894.

This happened to me in the past with Safestrap, because I accidentally hit the back button and cancelled the backup during safe system toggle. Had to uninstall/reinstall safestrap.

Let me guess...you used Root Keeper as well? Check out this video I made. I made it to show Koush the error I was getting and by going frame by frame I was able to see the last thing trying to restore before it hits the error. "su backup"

Man, thanks, this is the answer... Thanks for finding this out, now we only need a solution for this

I have an idea and I'm doing some testing now. If it works, I'll edit the OP with what I did. As of now, it all makes sense it my head.
EDIT: How can I make a .tar file? I currently am using 7zip and it's hitting an error.
Ok, I may be making progress here. The ArchiDroid seems to be helpful. We'll know in a bit here when it completes.
EDIT 3: Here's where I'm stuck.
1. Download ArchiDroid
2. Extract system.ext3.tar from my most recent backup on my ext SD card.
3. Move "su-backup" from the newly extracted system folder to my ext SD card directory.
4. Use ArchiDroid to recompile the system folder.
5. Rename system.tar to system.ext3.tar
6. Move system.ext3.tar into the host folder of my newest Nandroid backup.
7. Reboot into CWR and restore.
*MD5 Mismatch*
Any ideas?

Trying something else here... Details in 20 or so. If it works, it's practically idiot proof and how it illuded me makes me want to...
EDIT: It's a work in progress... :/
Ok so here's what I did. su-backup is stored in the /system directory. I tried deleting it, then making a nand backup, then restoring it. But as soon as su-backup is deleted (I put a copy on my ext SD), it regenerates itself. I uninstalled Root Keeper, but something remains that causes it to regenerate, thus the restore fails.
EDIT2: Currently Tweeting with the VooDoo Root Keeper dev. trying to find how to delete this da** thing.

Download an app called Titanium Backup, backup all of your apps, and SBF back to stock. That's how I solve my phone problems

If you change anything in the backup the md5sum changes as well. The md5 cwm is checking against doesn't match. I'd think there's a file somewhere in the nandroid that contains the md5 sum to check for. You could maybe try replacing Yeh old md5 with the new one.
Good luck.

Have it. I don't want to have to SBF from a computer though. Being able to use CWR is ideal.

That's a good idea. Back to the lab...
Also, I talked to the dev of VooDoo Root Keeper. He made some pretty good points about possible bugs in CWR that could be making it fail when it shouldn't. From Twitter @supercurio
there's a bug in nandroid if it fails to deals with su protected backup that must be fixed, because it uses standard Extfs features.
Aren't latest recoveries supposed to format partitions instead of trying to remove files recursively? First bug's here.
if you really has to to delete it manually, chattr -i /system/su-backup
yes, as superuser indeed. chattr tool should be part of your busybox, if not, look into my app's /data directory. Then rm su-backup

Number 2 won't work properly vfat filesystems cannot retain the permissions and ownership. It should be extracted on a Linux box or if there's room you could extract it to a temp directory on /data which will retain the permissions.
Another option that might work is Total Commander it should be able to delete files from an archive without extracting. It is not in the market, search google for it.

[RELEASE][NANDROID] Rooted Factory-Stock ROM

Hi all!
Well, thanks to everyone for their donations-- without you, this wouldn't be possible.
I present to you, one stepping stone towards custom ROMs: the shipping ROM on the device, backed up as a NANDROID.
What is this?
This is the shipping ROM on the device. There are no changes to this ROM besides being rooted.
Click to collapse
How do I use this?
Extract the contents of this file to your SD card (external SD card) under
Code:
/clockworkmod/backups/
and you will end up with a
Code:
/clockworkmod/backups/revo_stock
folder.
Run Clockwork on your device, and select "Backups and Restore" then "Advanced Restore". Select "revo_stock" as the backup to restore, and choose to restore ONLY "system".
(You can also restore boot.img, but it is unnecessary, and I only left that in there for future use.)
Click to collapse
What does this backup include?
This backup ONLY includes /system and boot.img. There is no recovery.img in this backup, nor is there a /data or /cache.
Click to collapse
Will I lose my apps or information if I restore this backup?
No you will not, this backup will not touch your /data partition.
Click to collapse
Why is this useful?
Accidentally erased something important in /system?
Removed something and now 4g Hotspot doesn't work?
Restore this, and it'll fix that... of course all the stock OS will come back, but hey-- you get a second chance

Extract through windows and put on your SD card in the proper folder.
its telling me that i have a md5 mismatch!!! i will try downloading it again.
Thanks cube please keep up the hard work! I wish I could do something to help other then sending some $$$ I would love to help bring the revolution along.
Viva la revolution.
Did anybody use this yet. i tried and it says my md5 does not match. i tried numerous times
Haven't tried it yet but I checked the MD5 against the images and they are correct.
Ah, sorry, forgot to state select "Advanced Restore" or whatever it's called-- JUST restore system.img.
If you select "Restore" it looks for the /data and recovery.img in the nandroid.md5 file, and when it doesn't find it, it errors out with an md5 error.
I'll edit the instructions now...
Just tested this. I can't advanced restore the system.img either. Comes back with MD5 mismatch. I can restore my own backups without a hitch however.
[Edit] I forgot to mention. There's a carriage return on the Rooted Factory-Stock ROM MD5 file. Removing it didn't seem to matter. I was thinking that maybe it was the culprit.
Agh! you just gave me the answer... I saved it in windows, rather than linux, so the line endings are wrong...
If you're able to, just open the file nandroid.md5 in Notepad++ or something like it, and remove the extra blank line, and change the line endings to UNIX style.
Thanks, I'll re-upload the .zip when I'm on a faster connection.
The actual .img files themselves are good, though.

Is there a version of this with everything? In other words, not just system but data, etc. I somehow am stuck in CWR...don't have a nandroid backup. I pushed this to the right place on the SD card, did the system restore, but it still repeatedly boots into CWR. Is there anything that will do a FULL restore instead of just system?
Thanks in advance.

Hm, so you did a data wipe from within Android. Yep, that'll get you stuck in CWR, but it's not a problem with the backup, it's that the LG bootloader isn't happy with Clockwork.
When installing Clockwork, did you make the p8 backup?
so im having the same problem i even started a thread too but im an idiot and didnt make that p8 backup because the md5sum didnt match so i stopped there but clockwork still seem to flashed to the phone now im in clockwork everytime i boot up was wondering any way to work around this if not guess imma just get a new phone until there is a way

There is a way, I just haven't written it into an easy-to-use program yet.
For now, if you haven't made a p8 backup, the easiest method is for you to come on IRC and have me adb into your phone and fix it for you.
If I get a spare moment though, I will work on a stuckinclockwork.zip that you can flash using clockwork to get you out of clockwork.

[FIXED] [Q] XT860 - Broke my /system/app folder...

EDIT: Fixed! Procedure I used was to download Danifunker's system dump, move it to /sdcard/ via adb push, then run the following:
Code:
adb shell
su dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk1p21.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk1p21
This completely refreshed my /system folder. Original post below:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hello XDA forumgoers, longtime reader first time poster here. I'm currently posting because I made a few mistakes. Several mistakes, actually.
1. In my quest to de-bloat my XT860, I accidentally removed one file too many, which caused my phone to mysteriously not have a cell signal. (com.motorola.service.main kept crashing.) So I hit the forum and grabbed a system dump from this thread (thanks Willis111):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17501981
I had bought the phone with some version of Cyanogenmod Recovery installed by the previous owner, so I was able to use that and ADB to stick the .apks and .odex files in the /system/app folder, chmod 644 them, and even factory reset for good measure.
2. As I soon found out, I had somehow made things worse. The phone, when boot into, shows the "press android to begin" page, but com.motorola.service.main and some other apps keep FCing on me, and I can't progress past that screen. In my haste, I didn't backup any of my system folders at all, though, I still backed up my apps with Titanium.
Tl;dr:
presumably none of the /system/app apks boot, most notably com.motorola.service.main. How do I fix this? Can I?
Try to flash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288823
You also need to chown 0:0 both the apk and the odex
Have you tried using my original system dump? It was taken with dd, so things like symlinks and the other sort should be functional. The only caveat is that a number of apps were frozen at the time, so you may need to unfreeze them with titaniumbackup.

I can't get past the "click android" screen, so I probably can't install or run it. Any way to do it via adb or Cyanogenmod Recovery?
I really appreciate the help.
jonsicoli, if you want to restore your *entire* /system folder (not just apps) you would run a similar command-set as this.
1. Copy the file to the internal memory
adb push c:\path.to.folder\mmcblk1p21.img /sdcard
the file will be located in the root of the sdcard (or you could drag and drop the file in USB storage mode)
2. Do a full restore on system memory *I have not checked to ensure this is working... but a command similar to this should work
adb shell
su dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk1p21.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk1p21
- wait -
(it would have to write about 500mb and replace all of the contents of /system )
reboot
_______________________________________________________
Okay, if you just want to look at the files, you could use a linux machine to mount the filesystem (it is a standard ext3 FS) or you could do what I have done on my windows system:
Install EXT2FsD from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/files/latest/download?source=files
Then install OSFMount from http://www.osforensics.com/tools.html
Point the OSFMount program to the img file that you downloaded and assign it a drive then voilla!
I am pretty sure this is a bit of overkill, but this should completely restore your system close to factory (minus the APKs that were upgraded/disabled, plus the fact root was done)
Thanks Danifunker! I reset my entire /system folder, and restoring my user app backup. I'm just relieved to have my phone back. Now to mark this thread as solved.
Awesome!!!!!! Glad to hear my system dump works! Thanks for testing
My command lines were written correctly also I guess?

I was under the impression that this ROM had been fixed for Safestrap, but you're the 2nd person to say something about it. I'll have to download it and check.
Or you can check the ROM yourself:
1. Make sure there isn't a /system/etc/rootfs folder in the .zip file. If there is, just delete it and after wiping the /system partition try flashing again.

Thanks for the response, Hashcode. I'll give it another shot once I get out of class.
Edit: Just checked. There most certainly is a rootfs folder in /system/etc in the .zip file. Deleting it prior to flashing won't cause any malicious effects?
Second Edit: Confirmed stable flash after removing /rootfs prior to flashing. Thanks Hash.

[THEME] CM9 Blue Notification Drawer Widgets - epic 4g

I themed my CM9 Galaxy Nexus notification drawer widgets to match the blue in the rest of ICS instead of the default white. I had an Epic 4G visitor ask about doing this for their phone, so I built this Zipthemer file to help y'all out. I don't have an Epic 4G so I couldn't test this out. If you try it let me know if it works, or what doesn't work.

download zipthemer here
*How to use Zipthemer*
note: you may need a ROM of you have flashed (CM9) in order to configure your edify script (this is the script that tells CWM what to do when you run your update.zip file)
1. Install zipthemer!
2. Open up the menu (on ICS it's the 3 vertical dots) and click on update edify (you will only have to do this once)
3. Updating Edify screen (complete either Option 1 or Option 2)
- option 1: browse to the ROM you have on your phone and click it -- done
- option 2: click on download, then exit out of the screen, click options (3 dots), settings, update script format, select your phone. If your phone isn't present, see option 1.
4. Download the zipthemer file (.zip), and using a file explorer, move it to the "zipthemer" folder on your sd card.
5. open zipthemer again, click the "+theme" button, select the theme you want to apply (you can select more than one, or even only certain parts of one)
6. click "*output" button and pick the name you want for your update file (or accept the default). Leave the "-update.zip" at the end of the file name and "/sdcard/" at the beginning so it will be in your sdcard root directory and easier to find when you go to flash it.
7. click "build it!", it will ask you if you want to create a backup file, I usually do just in case so I don't have to re-flash the entire ROM to undo my changes if I want to.
8. Exit zipthemer, reboot to recovery, flash your new zip file, reboot system, enjoy!
more notes:
a. as always, it's a pretty good idea to run a nandroid anytime you play with your system (this is a do as I say, not as I do kinda statement)
b. A lot of these type of themes where some system files are modified or system apps are modified, it's good to do a wipe dalvik/cache
c. if you update your ROM to a new nightly/RC/stable, re-build the zipthemer file. It's likely that this isn't necessary, but unless you know just what the CM team changed it's probably a good idea.
Sounds good! I'll have to try. Were u gonna post a link to zipthemer or am I missing something?

my directions may have been a little "off". The +output button expects you to pick a file. Just skip that one and click the *output button, if it says /sdcard/ first it will be in your sdcard root. Just type in the filename you want after that. Don't worry, you're not doing anything wrong.

Did you try to flash the file you downloaded from the OP or the file zipthemer created?

I know it seemed like a dumb question, but I'm starting at the very beginning and runnning through some of the basics to try and troubleshoot where the problem is.
My next two questions are
1. what version of CWM are you using (you can find this in ROM manager. Also, if ROM Manager says there is a newer version for you have it update to the newer version).
2. Next, which option did you use in zipthemer to configure your edify script? I prefer the option that uses a ROM you've flashed on your phone because I know the edify script in the ROM's .zip works - because I've used it to flash the ROM!
Don't worry about being new to this, we're all new to it at some point.

Do not change your CWM Recovery for cm9. It has to be the one included in the package. The script needs to be rewritten for MTD. It needs to mount system before flash, then unmount when finished (I believe).

May be true, listen to the guy with the same phone as you in this case, not me. I'm just a GNex guy providing a bit of theming on request. If you have a CWM version in your CM9 package that is a unique situation as I certainly don't (and haven't on any of my android devices).
At any rate, the CWM version probably won't make much difference here. If it's in your CM9 package then it's a safe bet that it's fairly new one and most certainly uses edify. Which brings me back to my earlier question, how did you configure your edify script?
Another thing to look at, based on a little clue in Zeinzu's post, would be to try to mount /system/ in CWM before you flash the update. before you flash the upate, while in CWM, go to "mounts and storage" then in there mount /system/, then go back and now click on "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip", etc to flash the update. You can go back now and unmount storage but I don't think you have to, you can probably just restart system. If, by chance, you go into "mounts and storage" and all you see for /system/ is "unmount" then system is already mounted and therefore not the problem.

Everything should be working then. Try to mount system in CWM like I mentioned in my last post and see how that works. Also, maybe you could post the update file zipthemer created here so I can take a look at it.

the file seems to look OK to me. The script mounts system for you and MTD so you shouldn't have to do that manually in CWM. Try to configure edify using option 1 (you'll need your version of CM9 downloaded to you phone for zipthemer to use). I like to use option 1 because i figure I used that edify to flash my ROM, so I know it works right. If this doesn't work I'll have to do some thinking.
to anybody else, have you used this successfully on your Epic 4G?

[Q] Somehow ended up with 2 CWM, how to uninstall one?

Hello,
I am not exactly sure how, but somehow in moboot I see :
- CWM
- ClockWorkMod
CWM works, the other does not.
How do I remove the 2nd one then?
I have been searching online, but all I can find is that installing CWM would remove the previous recovery but it does not work for me....
Thanks!
The only correct way to do it is start back to square one. You'll have to do an acmeunimstaller to get that off I believe. If anyone else knows correct me if I'm wrong. But do that then reinstall android with only the 4 zips

Yours is the SAFE way, but if you're adventurous and knowledgeable, you can use a root browser to navigate to /boot. Look for a file named uImage.ClockWorkMod; copy it to the sdcard (just to be safe in case you screw up); and then delete it in /boot. Make sure you also have a file named uImage.CWM, which should be the working recovery image. Reboot and the offending recovery should be gone. If you screw up, you should still be able to boot into the ROM and either restore the file you deleted or reinstall CWM.
