morning (or evening depending on where you are!)
so my much beloved x10 mini pro died on me recently and ive taken to using my old m8800 at the moment. My lovely wife has told me she is getting me the galaxy mini for christmas (not too far away).
so just to fill you in im aware of how to root an android phone (superoneclick normally does the trick) and changed the rom on my mini pro several times. basically what im looking for is an opinion (advice if you will) on the best rom or roms for the galaxy mini. my intention is to change what will be the current stock 2.2 for something in a 2.3!!
any suggestions would be great as would any pitfalls to watch out for with what im sure will be a large amount of roms that are available.
many thanks
Jim
NOTE: SuperOneClick works only on 2.2. For 2.3 Upd_1.zip trick should work. You can find all custom ROMs in Development section of Mini. And I'm not sure which is the best ROM available. And as you are going for 2.3 you can find stock ROMs in sammobile.com
Good luck!
the galaxy mini i will be getting is running on android 2.2 so superonclick should be ok for the initial rooting of the phone, i understand that there may be a firmware upgrade to android 2.3.3 available through samsungs keis software but ill see what is around before i get the phone so i know what my choices are.
thanks for the response
No point in rooting froyo cuz ultimately u'll endup using cm7 most probably...so as soon as u get ur phone, update it to 2.3.4 via kies or Odin method...flash cwm and flash cm7.
Done deal.
Note: what I said here is not period.

You'll lose the root access (which is done in 2.2) when you upgrade to Android 2.3, just in case for info.

ROM Manager is not supported for Galaxy Mini. Those who had installed probably had screwed their phones. So stay away from it.
Well, i use srock 2.3.4... works fine. But, tried custom, and it slowed my phone down big time...

Yes, agreed with you. I think we need to manually override the installation of CLock Work Mod recovery to make Rom Manager Working after flashing latest CWM recovery manually using Odin.

Hi everyone!
I've been an android user since the G1 and have had many different devices since then(htc magic, sony ericsson xperia x10, lg eve-yuck, htc desire, etc) and I have now just jumped on board with the Galaxy Tab!!!
I'm totally stoked and very happy to be joining everyone here in samsung tablet land, and I just wanted a litttle helping hand to speed things up for me a bit
So basically, I have a GSM tab thru rogers that I have just rooted and installed clockworkmod recovery on. I decided to flash the MoDaCo custom rom on and play around for a bit with no problem. What I need some help with tho, is maybe a brief explaining of the differences between the very few roms available right now for our tabs.. overcome v1.2.3, MoDaCo, etc.
I know for example, when dealing with my desire, there are a bunch of roms all catering to diff needs/wants/etc and they have diff looks and features not to mention diff versions of android-2.1/2.2/2.3
Whats the deal with the galaxy tab? Any help is much appreciated. Opinions are all welcome.
(if 3.0 honeycomb was available I wouldn't be asking this right now lol)
THANKS EVERYONE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO KEEPING UP WITH THE TAB SCENE ALONG WITH YOU ALL!!!!!!
Hi!
i needed some help from you.As you said u have installed the clockworkmod recovery.I have been trying to do that from the past 2 days but im not able to.i have unrooted my samsung tab, and i have checked if the bootloader is locked and it is not.and i have installed the Rom Manager. But when i try to click "FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY" i get and error " error while downloading from server. Please make sure that you have a stable internet connection, and that your SD card is inserted and has free space!" Can you please help me with this?
Hey, sorry for the late reply..
I had a few problems starting out with rom manager as well.. You have probably figured it out already, but I would grab the overcome rom that has cwm attached already.. Super easy. Once you get it installed you can easily use rom manager to boot into cwm whenever you like..

Forgive me for a stupid question but I'm VERY new to this:
Because Touchwiz is so awful, and the original galaxy tab is being denied ICS by Samsung, I've been thinking about using a custom rom.
There's already a nice looking ICS port coming along.
However, being VERY new to the galaxy tab - I bought this one used, as a pure wifi device, though it HAS a sim slot, I want to know -- how can I restore the original OS if I have problems with a custom firmware?
I noted Kies will refuse to deal with a samsung tablet if it's not an official rom... or am I mistaken?
I'm on a NTT Dococmo SC-01C (original Galaxy Tab) with official 2.3 docomo firmware. this was an upgrade from the preinstalled 2.2
Thank you SO much for help in advance.
You can flash stock firmware using either heimdall or Odin
So yes you can always go back.

Would you recommend the ICS Alpha 3, or is there a better Honeycomb rom? I can't be sure which is which because it seems like every distro has its OWN version number which doesn't match the android release number... sigh
I don't have personal experience with the hc port from but its being released as an release candidate which means that it should work pretty OK but there are probably still quite a few bugs to squash. The ics alpha 3 from is what I've been testing recently. It is NOT feature complete and those features that ARE there are extremely buggy if you are curious to know what isn't working I suggest exploring the ics from dev thread. Most of the working/broken info is in the first post. More detailed info can be found by paging through. Its nowhere near ready for prime time as an every day rom. I'm just testing it because I'm a bleading edge kind of guy and wanted to check out responsiveness and the slick new UI. I will be switching my from back to a gb room sharpish. Please note that i,m not giving the project a bad review, contrarily its showing amazing progress and I'm sure within a few months that there will be a release candidate of either fully working ics aosp or cyanogen mod 9 which is an ics project for the tab that many of the pics aosp project members are contributing to right now.
For a self described noob I would suggest looking for the most stable well tested and fastest rooms you can find. My best recommendations would be overcome kratos (the latest version for the Sgt) or cyanogen mod 7. Both of which are based on gingerbread and both of which have been tested for long periods of time with awesome user feedback and work great without the bloat of all the Samsung apps and such

G'day all,
I recently purchased my first Samsung phone (the Note, N7000). I got root access so I could use some of my favourite programs like setCPU, titanium etc and have been pretty happy with the phone since.
I was looking at changing out the Kernel or changing over the ROM however I don't know enough about the phone yet to make a good judgement call on this. On my old phone (X10i) it was necessary as the stock options were crap however this phone seems to be much better off.
I would just like to know what other people are using in terms of Kernels and ROMs and why in order to help me make a decision as to what I'll do.
Cheers,
Grady

Hi,
First post in here (XDA). I've been reading this great forum just about a week and i have to say, this is the best forum for Android users.
I'm coming from iOS and Galaxy Note is my first Android phone. I've been using Note about week now and i'm loving this thing! I think that there is no going back to iOS. Galaxy Note works that well and i really like the way i can customize this thing.
I have stock XXLC1 ROM rooted + CWM and Speedmod K2-11 Kernel. I think that my Note is now super fast after i flashed speedmod.
I also downloaded SetCPU from Play store, but i'm little confused that will it run backround after i make a widget of it on my homescreen? The "manual" says that i have to ignore SetCPU in Task manager, but i don't know how. Can you guys give me little help how to set SetCPU proberly?
Thanks!

SpeedMod is OK, any LP kernel is not.
LP are ICS kernels which cannot be applied to a GB Rom.

Champion.
Thanks mate!
Would be really grateful for a few answers here, I'm looking to root a Galaxy Mini GT-S5570 (not the S5570i 'plus' version) for a friend that's running GB 2.3.6 and was wondering about the best & quickest way to do it. (Doomlord's Zergrush V4 maybe?) My own phone's a Sony Xperia Ray so there's a few differences I have to get my head around!
I've got a handful of questions so I might as well just ask them one by one:-
Can one flash custom ROMS on the Samsung Mini without having to unlock the bootloader? And how well does ICS run on this phone? Would you recommend upgrading or leaving it with GB 2.3.6?
Where can I find a version of CWM for GB 2.3.6?
Is there a PC Companion type of application for Samsung where you can upgrade or repair the firmware? Might you have a link to it? Just in case things go badly wrong, fingers crossed they won't.
Lastly, (seeing as I'm a noob to all things Samsung) are there any ROMS or mods for the Mini that you'd recommend?
Thanks Samsung peeps!

Well this wont be too hard
1) To root, use this guide - http://yagyagaire.blogspot.in/2011/12/rooting-samsung-galaxy-pop-with.html#.UaHzBNJ0xUk
Btw dont worry about superuser being outdated ans such; you can update it through the app itself
2) For CWM, either you use 5 or 6. I'm using 5 and have had 0 problems so far, but you could try both. Links:
cwm 5 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439751
cwm 6 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2156194
3) As for the bootloader and stuff, you need not worry, i havent unlocked anything and have had no problems yet.
4) In case things do go badly flash stock firrmware to bring to stock condition.
link - http://yagyagaire.blogspot.in/2011/12/how-to-upgrade-samsung-galaxy-pop-to.html
5) ICS as well as JB upto 4.2.2 work well on mini; to check out some ROMs visit android development section.
Here are some ROMs

For others see first 2 pages of development section.
Never flash ROMs not meant for your phone as it will brick it; even GT-s5570I and mini 2 ROMs must not be flashed.
Never use ROM manager as it can brick your phone.
Hope this helps
Press thanks if I helped you. :good:
Thanks ThrashMetal King, some of that was really helpful! One thing though, just about all the ROM links are invalid (404 file not found) and if you check the link you gave for rooting GB 2.3.6. you'll find that the link for the upd_1.zip file is dead, i.e. there's noting stored there anymore.
Any alternatives to the rooting link you gave?
Btw, has ICS been officially released for the Mini by Samsung? Or is it ported versions of ICS only that are available?
Hi, I want to root my S3 mini, above model, running Android 4.1.2. I'd love to be free of the huge amount of bloatware that came with the phone so I can optimise its functionality.
However, I previously tried to root my Samsung Galaxy Y and ended up bricking the phone in spite of various attempts.
The endless threads going off in different directions are not particularly helpful either.
Also, if I do manage to root the phone, how can I be sure that there won't be conflicts with Samsung firmware updates etc.
I'm trying to make the process as smooth as possible. I know people on here give their time freely and appreciate that but losing half a day just trying to get a bricked phone back to its original state is not much fun.
Hey bro while upgrading any samsung device it is told that if the device is rooted i may cause problems.. So i think the mistake you make is upgrading your phone after rooting which eventually leads you bricking your device....

you won't get any samsung updates after rooting so there won't be any conflicts.
maybe these videos will help you how to root and install a custom rom.
I'm using the I8190 and I can asure you, once you have found a ROM that fits your needs, you won't miss Samsung updates. You can simply flash the new ROM, or you can wait and have a look if there are problems reported, then you stay on the firmware.
Downgrade? No problem.
Wanna change Rom? No problem.
Once you got for root and maybe even an upgraded ROM you won't miss a thing
OK, how do I know what mod is the best given my spec?
You mean which ROM?
Well, you can try a few and see which one fits your needs best, simply search the forum
I was referring to the CyanogenMod 10.2 mentioned in the video posted.
