I picked up the free WiFi Analyzer app for my rooted Nook Color and discovered something very interesting, and also disturbing, in reference to the strength of the WiFi signal that it is receiving.
The first thing that was interesting is that when I look at a list of the AP's in my area, my own network showed up fewer times on the list than it showed up, when compared to the others it found. In other words, when it scanned to find all of the AP's, sometimes my own would show up, but most times it did not. I found that to be very interesting since I am actually connected to it.
Then I looked at the Signal Strength meter for my WiFi access; this was when things became very interesting. It shows that the NC receives a very good -45 dB signal from my router for about 2-3 seconds, then it drops down to -100 dB for 15-20 seconds before going back up to -45 dB for 1-2 seconds. It repeats this over and over, with the low signal being received much longer than it receives the good signal.
Looking at the other AP's in the area, they too all fluctuate from their greatest strength down to -100 dB, with the exception of two, which only seem to fluctuate around 10dB, from -70 dB to -80 dB. They never fall as much as mine and the other signals do.
So this appears to be something in how my router is set up, and not specifically the Nook Color since all of the signals do not fluctuate to this extreme; but only for some of the AP signals it receives.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to keep my router signal from fluctuating to such a great degree?
Is the channel your router using also being used by the other routers? Try changing the channel.

That seems to be working better, now that I changed the channel. I will monitor all of the other AP channels in the area over the next couple of days to ensure I have one that is not being used. Thanks.

Anyone notice dodgy wifi 802.11 signal? I have dd-wrt firmware on my Linksys router with the transmit power amped up and still while in the same room the reception meter on the n1 shows 2out of 3 bars sometimes. Seem peculiar to me. I've tried different channels, lowering the transmit power on the router also.
I am an old iPhone user and I have noticed the same. My iPhone was always connected fine and then in the house I look at the N1 and it is on 3G.. i have to go back into settings-> wireless & networks -> wi-fi settings and connect to my wifi again....
No I mean it just has a poor signal.I look at the wireless clients from my router configuration and the phone has a low signal
ya. but it is essentially the same problem... mine is just worse..
Compared to my iPhone 2G, my T-Mo N1 seems to show the WiFi on full bars less of the time, but actually have better reception in real life marginal areas. In other words, my experience is that the actual reception is better, but the indicator graphic doesn't show full bars as readily as the iPhone did.
I put CM7 on it the first night I got it so I can't say for sure if it was this way stock, but my Nook Color barely sees my wifi router an won't connect. My LG G2x phone gets 30-50% signal and my Sony VPC1280 laptop gets full signal (it's got fantastic wifi reception).
Is this typical? Well below average wifi reception?
I may need to get a repeater or something. Moving the main router closer to the area I want to use is not an option.
I'm not sure about the wifi reception in general for the NC but for me it works as well as my laptop which is pretty darn good.
My NC connects just fine to my wifi router at home (can't remember brand/model unfortunately), but the transfer rates are pretty bad (3 down, <1 up). My G2 phone gets very good transfer rates (9 down, 3 up). Not sure how to make it better.
I have the same problem... my NC has trouble picking up a WiFi signal in certain places in my house that my other WiFi devices don't.
My guess is that the WiFi antenna is placed where my hands block while holding it or I just have too much interference in my home.
I just bought one S Advance few days ago.i noticed that my wi-fi signal is significantly lower than my girlfriend's HTC Rhyme. Also when i keep the phone on my desk, in the same room with the rooter (3 meters away from it) my wifi signal is full Instead when i pick the device in my hand the signal drops 1 or even 2 lines of signal and it keeps oscilating. Not mentioning that in public places i sometimes can't connect to a wifi because i don't have enough signal but the HTC does.
I nstalled several wifi monitors like wifi analyzer or wifi signal info and the last one shows how my signal decreseases when i pick the device in my hand (aprox 15-20%).The internet still works fine in the same room with thee router but if i go few meters from the room it drops significantly and charging internet pages becomes poor or null. And in public places is kind of funny. If i keep the device on the table the signal is 2-3 lines but when i put it under the table or just turn the back on the router the signal just drops 1 line and the internet is not working anymore
I want to know if it`s my device problem only or if someone else is experiencing the same. I saw a lot of posts about weak wifi signal on SGS II. Does the S advance has the same problem ?
Should i return the device to the provider for replacement or it's just normal?
My router is in another room - about 6 meters away with bathroom on straight line from my desk to the router and I got 3 out of 4 bars on 'wifi manager' - no mattrer if phone sits on the desk or I am playing with it in my hands. Internet works as usual everywhere in my flat - no matter where I am,
Public wifi getting 1-2 bars on wifi manager works ok - I blame speed cap for slower loading pages on public wifi - must try speedtest while on it to be sure.
Bought my device in December - it was used for like 2-3 months when I bought it.

Try ThunderZap kernel, I was getting better signal with it in places where I didn't have at my home.
Thanks
Thanks guys. Yesterday i tested my phone with another s advance.also new. and they had pretty much the same signal on wifi signal info app.i`m not complaining about internet connection in my room...no matter how many lines the internet is still working fine. But if i hold the phone with one hand and cover his back the signal decreases and holding it from above part =up one line.but in public places it sucks.Keeping my hands on the table=2 lines, under the table=1 line and unusable internet.pretty much annoying. I guess it's samsung`s hardware problem with this wifi antennas.
With wifi manager about 5-6 meters away from the router, straight line:
86% percent signal keeping the phone from it's top = -62dbm, 3 lines
60% percent signal keeping the phone normally as in daily use = -75dbm, 3 lines
I'm having a strange issue with my Exhibit . I'm running CyanogenMod 11 20140714-UNOFFICIAL although I think I saw this earlier too. When I'm home on my WiFi, battery use it great. Under 2%/hour. When I'm at work on the WiFiit is pretty bad, around 6-7% per hour. If I turn off WiFi, it gets much better (maybe 3% per hour). Same thing if I forget the WiFi network at work. Sometimes in my battery use graph I can see it get flat for and hour and then get bad again -- I think this is losing the WiFi connection for a bit and then reconnecting.
Work recently moved and the results didn't change enough though my data service strength changed a lot. So I'm pretty sure it has to do with the WiFi network. Other people at work don't notice a drain when using WiFi, so I'm guessing it is a combination of the work WiFi and the phone.
The work WiFi is running tomato 1.27, which I administer. I sniffed the WiFi traffic with my laptop and saw a lot of ARP requests for 'who has address' for address not on the WiFibut on our unsecured network. So I separated that with a VLAN and that helped a bit but not a ton, and the ARP requests are much lower (maybe a ~1 / minute). Signal strength is as good or better at work than at home and at home there is way more congestion of neighbor's WiFi.
I know it isn't my phone usage as I would reboot my phone and not touch it for 3 hours and look at the battery drain at both work and at home and see these differences.
Any ideas on what makes the WiFi at work with a tomato router (vs some netgear wifi router) worse on battery than my home network. Work has maybe 7 clients connected at a time, vs probably just the phone at home. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot / debug. Packet sniffing on the WiFi didn't show anything that stood out.
Thanks!

try adjusting some of the settings in the wireless advance settings also make sure your wifi is using the least crowed possible channel and 1,6,and 11 can overlap without interference. easy way to find the best channels is to use an app on a laptop or smartphone with wifi.
Android Wifi Analyzer Free in app store
windows insidder 3 free
Linux LinSSID free
*NOTE too much interfernce may cause network delays which in turn force rechecking connection due to lost packets. also it after trying the above the second thing it could be is possible routers wifi is slowly going out. I've had a linksys router do that. new ping was awesome for e.g playing league of legends 81 when wifi notice her wifi connection kept droping. rebooted router and it worked fine for a a while then did it again and slowly became more frequent ping also increased to 106. replaced router with a new one and ping dropped to 73 and 0 wifi drops or slow downs. hope this helps
I'm pretty sure it isn't interference. At home there are 15 strong WiFi stations across all channels. At work, there are only 2 other WiFi stations and mine is at a channel far from them, so the X-talk from WiFi is way better at work. Also when work moved, I saw no change (although WiFi wasn't crowded at only location either) so I think it has to do with the WiFi network and not the environment.
did you test to make sure wifi isnt dropping packets either as well as check routers wifi intervals

How would you test if wifi is dropping packets? Just a ping on my phone? I can ping wireless consistently from my desktop, but that is over ethernet.
What do you mean by "wifi intervals"? Is that a setting I should see on my tomato firmware? "Beacon Interval" is set to 100, but I don't claim to understand that. "DTIM Interval" is set to 1.
Thanks,

yes that is correct for wifi intervals in the tomato firmware. look at This for better info for what each setting is for. the 3 main ones i would be adjusting as needed is Beacon Interval , Fragmentation Threshold and Interference Mitigation. To test pack loss anything thats on wifi and can ping router. So yeah your phone will work. just make sure you ping the routers ip address e.g for linksys 192.168.1.1
I haven't changed any of the wireless settings yet, but I do have more data. My phone sometimes is on the wifi and has normal (low) battery usage. Today from 9:30 - 12:30 it was great, but after 12:30 there was a discontinuity in the battery vs time graph as the slope decreased by over a factor of 3. Not sure what changed -- I don't see different devices on the wireless or higher wireless utilization. I'm thinking something in the wifi trips a setting or something on the wifi isn't completing on the phone and is draining the battery.
Rate this thread to express how you think the Google Pixel 2's Wifi performs. A higher rating indicates that it has excellent range, throughput, and signal strength. Like when you're taking a dump in the bedroom upstairs, do your videos have to buffer or do they come through without interruption?

2.4ghz signal strength is improved over my OG Pixel, but the 5ghz reception for me has been significantly worse to the point that I can't use 5ghz in my home with this phone as it has to be much closer to the router than my OG pixel which I can go anywhere in my house with. Anyone else experiencing the same?
Using speedtest.net on 5ghz, downoad speeds on my Pixel 2 are about 20-50% slower than my Nexus 6P.
I've been noticing a lot of drops with 5ghz where my old Nexus 5x has been solid. Lately, it's been from the next room over from my router. I've switched over to 2.4 and will test that out over the next few days.

If it's on a 5GHZ network it will always lose connection if you aren't close to your WiFi router. That's how 5GHZ just works.

How profound, you also lose connection to 2.4ghz wifi if you aren't close enough, that's just how it works!
However what is being said here is that the 5ghz reception on the Pixel 2 is not great. At a range where my OG Pixel and laptop are both showing around -68dbm signal strength the Pixel 2 is showing -80dbm and can't hold a stable connection to 5ghz. I doubt there is anything wrong with it and most likely this just boils down to the design of the antennas and case. The 2.4ghz wifi strength seems to be slightly better than my OG Pixel.

On the phones I am using WiFiAnalyzer app from VREM Software to get signal strength information. There are lots of others available in the play store. I have a wifi analyzer application on my desktop as well to read out the dBm values for networks from my laptop.
I concur - 5GHz WiFi lacks range. 2.4GHz WiFi appears fine, though.
5 GHz Band has a smaller coverage area than 2.4 GHz. It has nothing to do with the phone..5 GHz band is the better one to be on. It has more non-overlapping channels which means less traffic assuming you don't pick a busy one. 2.4 GHz band only has 3 channels that don't overlap.
Like with the 5X and the 6P.
Pixel 2 starts with 5Ghz when I reboot the phone and minutes later change to 2.4Ghz and never come back to 5Ghz until the next phone reboot.
This is happening even near the router and in a small house that have 90% 5Ghz signal even in the most remote areas.
The 5Ghz traffic is also pretty low in the area compared to 2.4Ghz which is more crowded.
The router used is an Asus OnHub and both SSIDs have the same name.

some problems with wifi, on 3 different routers, no miracast
Hi
We have a pair of Ubiquiti UniFi AP-AC-Pro WAPs at opposite ends of the house to provide decent coverage throughout (long skinny house with solid internal walls). My Pixel 2 always connects at 5GHz using 802.11ac and stays connected at 5GHz using 802.11ac, and the UniFi WAP controller software shows that the phone connects at a TX rate of between about 500Mbps and 900Mbps depending on distance from the WAPs. With the phone about 10m from the nearest WAP, if I run an ftp server on the phone and use an ftp client on a PC to copy a 1Gb VOB file up to the phone and then back down again, I get a throughput of around 55-58Mb/sec (440-465Mbps) in either direction.
I suspect a lot of the problems reported are due to the generally poor quality of consumer-grade WiFi WAPs.
Same here! My pixel 2 wont connect to the 5ghz network unless its near the router. And also WiFi disconnects automatically frequently. Any fix for this???
Haris, that depends on your wifi signal. If it's strong, the phone is defective, and you know the "cure" for that. If you're going through anything large and conductive, or noisy - a refrigerator, a microwave oven that's running, 5 walls, etc. - that's the problem and you have to get some signal to where you are. (I could never use anything on my deck, which had to shoot 2.4MHz through a microwave to get to the router, when the microwave was running. the only "solution"? Wait.) Now, in a larger house, with a more centralized router, no problem anywhere. No problems finding a clean 2.4 MHz channel, so I have 5MHz turned off.)
Does anyone know the maximum wifi speed possible on a Pixel 2 XL?
