Hi,
I saw in several threads (SGS2, ...) that custom ROM's using ICS are already out.
Does someone work on a custom ICS NOTE ROM?
I think the time for the official Samsung update will be very looooooooooooong
+1
would love to be able to use things like CIFS and WiiMote. but going to a 2.3 custom build seems a bit pointless when ICS is hitting other handsets.
looking forward to some ICS <3
Nub question here, if I install an ICS Rom (when they become available) would I be able to get OTA google updates for ICS?
Thanks!

Depends if the developer turns off OTA updates, since they usually include them anyway in the ROMs.

u wont get a notification to update to ICS if u r on a custom rom.
however u r guaranteed to read about it elsewhere and then update manually, usually with some tweaks
If u install custom roms, the chances that u will go back to stock is close to 0.
Thanks a lot for the explanation!
HandTec's blog has posted this update on ICS:
"Samsung (Italy) has confirmed that the following devices will get the latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
Samsung Galaxy Note
Samsung Galaxy S2
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
Not entirely sure when the update will be available – rumors are early 2012 . However the latest Samsung Galaxy Nexus will come with Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich"
http://www.handtec.co.uk/blog/2011/10/samsung-to-get-ice-cream-sandwich/
I see 0 development threads for ICS development on Galaxy Note.
Is this impossible ?
what about current custom roms , are they able to add s-pen support as well as VPN ?
thx.

I am using Samsung Galaxy S android version 2.2, I want to update it to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 or which ever is available. I read the instructions but I did not understand anything from it. I am doing it for the first time so I want to know step by step details or if there is any video. I also want to know few things
1- Will android market work
2- Will the phone have lags or speed get slower in the video it did not but I want to know.
3- Will I get all feature of Ice Cream Sandwich
4- In future if company releases 4.0 for galaxy s can I roll back the changes and turn it back to the original version which was there and if yes then how??
I have never tried such thing so I want to be sure before I do it. It looks pretty good in the video.
Firstly, welcome to xda. There currently isnt a proper samsung version of ICS for the galaxy s. What there is are several custom roms people have made based on ics, which if you read through their posts you will see that most of them still have issues and/or bugs. If you check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593 these guys are getting closer every time to a full working version of ics for the galaxy s.
So, choices for you are wait until samsung release a full version of ics (which looks very doubtful) or flash the afore mentioned ics rom or flash a different rom that takes your fancy. Myself I am flicking between this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344489 (my current rom) and saurom.
Once you decided what you wanna do, then let us all know and we will guide you in the right direction.
My advice is to stay on samsung based ROMs for now. ICS ports are still alpha, although some people are using them for everyday. On the other hand, most GB XXJV? and XWJW1 roms are running quite fast on the Galaxy S. Coming from 2.2 you will see a big difference going into 2.3.6.
My personal choice is SURFACE v8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155776) with the IceCreamS theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386990).
Good luck!
I would like to knw when the full working version of ICS is available so tht before I update I could assure myself being safe to update the phone. I am not waiting for Samsung update but I want a proper Rom which suits the phone
Samsung said it won't be releasing any official ICS on Galaxy S. So all ICS work is made by dev teams, using the ICS source code and ICS releases on similar hardware (Nexus S). Most (all?) ICS ROMs are based in teamhacksung ICS port. You can see them in the Development forum (OneCosmic, Surface v1, MyICS, ...)
Some devs will say that their roms are release-candidate, finished or even official, but be careful with this, the teamhacksung port is in alpha stage (build 11) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593). Moreover, there is no public roadmap for an official version and the devs don't like to be asked on ETAs.
I suggest you to read that thread to see what is and is not working in each build. Also, you can get answers to most of your questions (except ETA) on the CM9 discussion thread in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387937).
SO Is it safe now to update with current available roms or to wait till the final version releases without any bugs becoz I hv gone thru Q&A dept and der are lots of complains sleep problem headset recognition problem and many more

Given that you have no experience flashing custom ROMs, I would also have to suggest avoiding the alpha ICS builds right now. Things will probably go wrong, whether majorly or minorly, that you aren't accustomed to dealing with.
Wait until a stable version is available, or at the very least a beta. However, in the mean time, I would definitely recommend flashing to 2.3.6. As someone else already mentioned, it will be a nice upgrade over 2.2, and it's an easy way to learn the basics of flashing ROMs.
Good luck!
First get to Gingerbread and then go for ICS if you really want to.
Hey Guys and Gals,
Just bought a Note, will be arriving in the next couple of hours.
Just a couple of questions -
Im coming from a GSII that has been running a custom ICS rom and really really love the features ICS brings and how it looks. I would like to run ICS on my Note from the word go as I feel going back to GB would taint my experience.
(Q) Am I correct in assuming that if I flash a custom ICS rom on my Note that I wont be able to use the S Pen features???
If im correct with the first question, then I will not flash a ICS rom immediately as I want to experience the S Pen and all its features to see if its for me. But I will want to Root it.
(Q) If I root my device will I still be able to update to the official ICS (When released) via a Update Notification or will I have to flash in a differant way???
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to becoming a part of the XDA Galaxy Note Community....

you are quite right my friend, the GB on note for now is perfectly fine if wanna try out the new features.. even i recently upgraded from s2 running ics and to be honestly the first day i was missing ICS badly but gb on note is different than when i first got s2 year back.. i am just waiting for the premium suite from samsung with specific new features for note and havent really been keen to try the cooked ics roms since i am more than satisfied having the note for over 2 weeks.. but eventually its what you want to do with your device that is the freedom of android but do give the forums a read as upgrading to ics has given many new users problems.. otherwise just root your LC1 ++ 2.3.6 rom and fall in love with note all over again.. enjoy your new phone and dont forget to get screen protector and some sexy cases cheers
You wont be able to use the s-pen's features on an AOSP/AOPK build. The only safe ICS roms at the moment are the CM9 based ones so you won't get any of the Samsung specific functions of the s-pen if you flash those.
You could flash an ICS rom based on the leaked firmwares and then use the DAFUQ kernel which to my knowledge doesn't have the flaws that could mess up your eMMC chip but that kernel is in alpha or beta status so some (minor) problems are to be expected when using it.
My advice, stay on GB for the moment. If you want to root, look for the thread in the Developer's section with the pre-rooted kernels. Just flash one of those with PC Odin and you're rooted without the chance of triggering the triangle and binary counter so you still have warranty. If you choose the same pre-rooted kernel as the one you are running now you should be able to OTA/Kies update your phone to the official ICS firmware when it's released but you'll lose root obviously.
There are some very good custom firmwares and great alternative kernels for GB in the Dev section as well if you still wanna tweak your Note.

GB is Gingerbread, the current version of Android OS on the Note. ICS is Ice Cream Sandwich, the updated version that will be released by Samsung in the near future.
Most alternative launchers can be themed, look for themes for your launcher in the Play Store.

Some people can wipe with affected kernels as often as they want without problems. Just because you didn't brick, DO NOT advise other users that they will be OK.

I don't own this phone. My father does. I have seen many people in India with official ICS. Is it available via Kies? I can't find it. It shows 2.3.6 as latest. Am I doing something wrong?
PS : My dad won't allow me to use ODIN on it. Forget rooting and custom ROMs.

Official ICS aren't going to be available. Samsung doesn't like us.

Name me a single non-Nexus phone that came out around the same period (summer of 2010) as the I9000 that has an official ICS update. If not, stop moaning about it. All you people keep on complaining about how Samsung is bad with update, but did you forget that HTC didn't even want to release a GB update for the Desire?
You try understand my view for Samsung after reading few words by me.
You aren't right, I'm quite happy that we don't have official ICS. ICS ports from Nexus are almost perfect. What's more, GS II ICS is buggy and laggy so this is next benefit for us
And the last thing - Nexus don't have TouchWiz, next crap.
Undeniably, the fact that only small percent of i9000 users can have ICS isn't good. This is punishment for using crappy Kies

Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5830i and I've just been browsing through the Jellybean updates, however they all seem to have some kind of error with the camera.
I was just wondering if someone could give me a link to a thread or something with the best update, i.e. one with the least errors (preferably not to with the camera, as I use that quite a lot, and wifi). Anything over 2.3.6 version would be nice, so I wouldn't mind Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich but I'd prefer Jellybean, though I'm guessing these would be the ones with the least errors.
Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the S5830i doesn't have any ICS nor Jelly Bean ROM, and if it has, it would be very buggy, since Broadcom didn't release the drivers for our phone yet, so I think the most that you can get is android 2.3.7 (here).
Press the Thanks if helped.
Try jellyblast rom. It gives you the jellybean looks plus android version 4.1.1 ( Settings--» About Phone--» Android Version--»» 4.1.1 ). But I don't think there are any ics/jb roms for s5830i like our s5830 ( cm9, cm10, aokp, aosp, pac, etc ; )
I used to have beautiful life before. Now I'm in engineering...!

Is there any decent changes within 2.3.7 that differs from 2.3.6? I mainly wanted to update it for a new design and so that it supports more apps.
Hello All,
I"m having a Galaxy GT-I9000, which was originally from Europe. The last update I got from samsung is 2.3.3 (GINGERBREAD.XWJVH). I dont think samsung will publish any updates for this model anymore.
I would like to go with the custom ROM, I know It's not so easy to as I say.
Is there any easy way to decide and install it ASAP. Plz guide me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance

Actually this question was asked countless times already. I'm not trying to be smart or something like that but there are several similar threads already.
Try to look within this General Forum and in the Question & Answer Forum and you will surely get an answer.
Install slimbean. if unsatisfied try flashing others.

Just search a bit... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665.
Make a clean install of ICS333 2.0.1 ROM. The most stable and memory friendly ROM so far (ever). It's very fast also.
The JB roms are on par - try SlimBean or CM10 (but flash Semaphore 2.6.0 kernel on CM10). Don't try JB 4.2 - tt's very new . Wait 1-2 months for good releases.
without creating a new thread, but along the lines of this subject already, can I ask, if there are any custom rom's that include the official samsung email application? I know that's specific, but its for some testing..A port from another samsung device maybe,,,tia
I am very happy with Slim Bean. It is "slim", and very battery efficient. I could use a full battery charge on 3.5 days, with mail, sms and few phone calls.
Just be careful with the last version, 3.0, that has a battery drain problem. I can only get 2 days from a load.
I used RemICS 1.3.1. very good, but lags at times.
