I got up this morning and decided to sync some music over to my captivate. I was surprised when I started getting errors that the device was not recognized. After four hours of trying to get the phone to sync I put it back to as vanilla as I could and brought it to ATT. After trying a new cable and just about everything else the phone has been declared to be defective. My problem is how do I get this phone back to original without a usb connection. The phone is not recognized by Odin, ADB or anything else so as far as my knowledge goes I am out of ideas. The phone works fine other wise but I thought some of the brightest on here might be able to help. Any ideas guys?
Try a different USB port.
Mine only works in the back USB ports, but won't do **** in the front ones.
I probably should have been a little more clear. The port is defective on the phone. They can't even communicate with the phone at the AT&T store through the usb port with some reader. I am trying to get the phone back to resembling stock before i send it back for warranty.

Try downloading adbwireless from the market. It will allow you to use adb without a wired connection.

I have Windows 7 64x bit, and sometimes my connections seem dead, and I just uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
ADB wireless seems like your best bet right now
Thanks. Gave that a shot and I can connect to the phone. Now all I need to do is find the att apps.
try a factory reset and see if it recognizes your phone .

i have also tried many new usb cables... sorry i forgot to mention that.
Can you try a different computer? Trying to identify if it's a computer problem or a phone problem.
i dotn really have the option of using another computer... i think it is the computer but i am not sure.
Plug another device into the computer. 1 that is known to work. If that does not work you will need to uninstall your usb drivers and reinstall them with no devices attached.
For more information google hardware manager usb.
If this doesn't solve your issue it would either b a virus or hardware failure. If your phone charges fine I seriously doubt it is your phone that is the problem.
I almost forgot. The android usb drivers have been updated since the last release of windows. I would look into this as well.

Make sure you have compatible and up-to-date USB Drivers. Another thing, make sure you have HTC Sync installed.
Check the permissions on the computer with USB Ports.
The phone might be bad. I had this problem and Sprint replaced the phone
Same problem here... my wife's hero is recognized with same USB cable and same computer ... but mine wont recognize ... it started doing this after I flashed to a sense rom to update prl ... could that have screwed it up?

You need to go to the 'device tree' in device manager this is the default and only view on windows xp. You are looking for usb root port or .... well hold on ill find it. Im assuming vista here?
It doesn't say it in the article but from my experience sometimes it can be selective about which devices it will allow to connect.
Unplug your device now.
Removing the drivers and re-installing them erases all the current configurations. Yes your computer remembers everything you have ever plugged into those ports until this point ↓
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900
I hope you remember to google for the latest android usb driver before you plug it back in!
If you didn't just go through the steps again at the microsoft site. Reopen the new drivers From android project Then plug your device in. Keep me posted.
Oh and you cant 'Revert your phone to stock' unless you made a backup of the stock rom before you flashed it. Well you could also have another copy of the same phone lying around... And even then when they send the device to hardware quality labs they're forensic equipment will tell that the locks have been snapped. Your phone might come back with a bill.
↑ Things of this nature are usually against customer service policies but in today's economy nothing would surprise me.
I hope you're not panicking! If you couldn't tell I have run into this problem more than once over the years, so the odds that your phone is jacked up are slim to none £

you can always just download the stock rom from sprint for and update cant u? at this point i might as well insure it then have it get "stolen" just to get a new phone.
Lol. No comment ;D

You can always try the android drivers in my post on how to install adb. Its in the hero dev section. I made that thread because some users were having trouble installing the htc drivers. As usual I'm mobile so I can't link you but you should find it no problem. Hope it helps good luck

Yes you can revert your phone to stock, don't worry. Just download the RUU from Sprint or HTC's website and run it with your phone plugged in. If you ever can get it to recognize it anyway, lol.
Hey guys, as the title says, I have a USB connection problem.
You see, when I turn off the phone, remove the battery and plug it in to the USB port while holding the vol down button, nothing happens! On the phone, the S/W upgrade screen appears, but smartflash does not detect my phone!
Also, when I try to connect my phone to my PC while the phone is running, it charges but I don't get any "bug" icon (from USB debugging), neither does my PC seem to realize that my phone is connected. But, it still charges my phone...
I tried flashing different roms and kernels, but nothing changes. I tried changing from CP USB to AP USB from the hidden menu, but that does not solve it either... I'm getting kinda desperate here :/
My specs:
ROM: CM7.2.0
Kernel: 2.6.32.55-cyanogenmod [email protected]))
BB: 1035.21_20110725
RIL: 0725
Both my computers are running Windows 7, one of them is running x86 and the other one x64.
Is it a software or hardware issue?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
EDIT: I've done some research on Google and found other people with issues that seem like mine, but none of them got any helpful answer! Hence this thread. MODS: If you see this thread and you know for fact that there are other threads on this particular issue, I would be eternally grateful if you could PM me or at least post a link with a solution before closing my thread! (21/8-2012)
EDIT 2: I tried most of the roms and kernels from the first two pages in Dev Section, none of them are changing anything. (6/9-2012)
EDIT 3: After trying different cables, I've come to the conclusion that there's something wrong with my phone's USB port, but I can't send it back for repair since my warranty is void. Therefore, my question to you guys is:
Is there any way to flash a completely stock rom (without root) without a working USB connection? (8/9-2012)
I have the same problem and couldn't find any working solution yet.
The phone charges normally but there isn't any notification for mounting the removable storage (which is something I really need to sync files), even after unchecking and rechecking the USB debugging option.
So, it's not a PC problem, this time is the phone that doesn't recognize the computer.
For me, it started after plugging a USB OTG adapter (to see if it fits) and I couldn't get it to connect to regular USB anymore.
Can anyone help us?
I have the same problem like OP with a 1€ micro usb cable.
Works perfect with the original one, so try some different cables (and usb ports).
just an idea...
Try different usb cables in different usb ports on different computers (unless you already done so). Try with stock rom. If it's still not working try to clean the USB port's connectors inside the phone, a cotton bud should do the trick (it might be good with a cleaning liquid to, there are some special ones out there for the job ask in your local hardware store).
If all above give no result we can almost assume that its a hardware problem. If you got warranty contact the place you bought it. If not there are mobile repair stores.
Hope it helps.
Yup, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a cable problem... I almost threw away an external harddrive that I thought wasn't working (I could read the files in it but I couldn't write any files into it!) until I tried a different cable and it worked fine!! Pretty weird right?
Also, problems with USB and cyanogenmod are not new to me, but latest temasek's roms have been working perfectly to me, have you tried any of those?
Best of luck!
Thanks guys, tried with 2 different cables in many different ports, but it's still not working. So now I know that there's something wrong with my phone.
But I can't send it in for repair since my warranty is void, and there's no way to get everything to stock now AFAIK...
What should I do? Any advice?
Yeah, LarsPT, I've tried temasek's builds from 131 to 135. None of them are helping my case.
i have the same problem. tried everything but not working. please help
Tried some other kernel?
Or is some driver missing? But i think there is no one needed :/

Yeah, I tried many kernels, but now I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the usb port in my phone
I had a similar problem and had to do a reinstall of the LG drivers and a bit of fiddling with the device manager.
Or that could be a completely different problem. I don't know.

Help!
+1 for this post! had exactly the same problems. And yeah,I did try different LG drivers, different USB ports, and different PCs! I went ahead as far as spending a day over at our IT LAB at school to try and fix it,but after almost 20 PCs later,no luck, basically stucked at this friggin' phone charging via USB but not recognized. Was working fine before I rooted the phone though,so is there any way to restore it to out of box state ROM by using CWM? please do not suggest me using NVFlash or smartflash,or I will bang my head on the table.
hm... I had a similar situation with my O2x... I know theres a internal memory and a external!
I removed the SDcard and the PC would just charge my phone, it wouldent even recognize my internal memory. After I added the SDcard, it just starts to work.
Maybe stupid or idk, but try to change the SDcard and try again :-/
EDIT: does your phone recognize your SDcard normally ? Back it up and format it over your phone... something like that :-/
Hey guys, I've been searching all over O2x forum to see if someone found a solution to this problem, and seems like no one did, good news, I found one, i made a turorial but dont have the 10 posts to make a thread, sorry for this pseudo spam message but need to get the 10 posts to put my tutorial on a new thread

After having this phone for a little over a year, I have finally decided to enjoy the world of root once again. The only probably is that I have been banging my head against the wall all day trying to figure out why none of my computers will recognize my phone when it is connected.
I am 100% stock right now.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm going to be that guy. I tried installing the drivers on a Win7 machine, even did a factory reset on the phone. I have tried using multiple cables, but still am not having any luck.
Has anyone else had this problem and been able to resolve it? I am tempted to go to Sprint and see if they will replace it and try my luck with getting one that hasn't been updated yet.

I've never experienced this, but I've heard that some cables can only handle charging the phone but not doing data transfers between the phone and the PC. Is the phone getting charged when connected to the computer? Also, is the phone getting charged normally (via outlet/AC)?
It might be that the phone's faulty - in that case just factory reset your phone, make sure it's S-ON, unrooted, on stock ROM, completely wiped etc, and take it back to Sprint.
I'd suggest towelroot to root your phone easily without a computer, but since the newer HTC phones have /system write-protected, it won't work. Give it a try though anyways - it won't affect anything.

It charges when connected to the computer, but when I connected it to my Car Dock this morning it told me that it couldn't charge it. This was using the HTC Card Dock specific for my HTC One.
I'll be taking this in to the Sprint Store to see if they will order me a replacement, or can show me where I am going wrong.

Hey folks,
So I have a completely unmodified, stock Canadian N920W8 on 6.0.1, and no matter what I do, I cant get it to be recognized by Odin on my Win10 or Heimdall on my Mac.
I've done everything I could think of. Different cables, different ports, even different computers. Reinstalled the USB drivers, everything.
Anyone have any ideas? My phone won't fast charge, and is lagging more and more. I can't even Odin back to stock because it won't recognize. Factory Reset just cleaned out everything but nothing has changed. OEM unlock and USB debugging on, it won't be seen by the computers.
Any help? It's past manufacturer warranty, but it's still a good phone and I don't wanna lose it.

Did you install the actual drivers or just the ones that Windows installs? I use the ones that Samsung smart switch installs and I have no issues. If it is not fast charging and your computer does not recognize the phone it may not matter what drivers you use.
I used the Samsung USB drivers for Mobile Phones from Canadian support page. And that's on a fairly fresh win 10 install, too.

Unfortunately not. I was hoping smart switch would see it. I would not rule out a damaged USB port.
I hope not... this is way past warranty, and I wanted to flash the thing with Khongloi's new Nougat rom... if it won't be recognized, then I can't even back it up or re-flash it to stock. Which is not a good thing...
No other suggestions, @CodeNameRedNeck ? You've been a huge help otherwise.

Just to be sure. Can you transfer files from your PC to your phone and vice versa? Do you have any USB 3.0 ports? My phone seems to work better on 3.0 but still works on other types. Do you still have the Samsung cable? I know you said you have tried other cables but I used to have two cables that would not do data.
I tried with a brand new from the box cable, into four different usb 2 ports on the Mac and 2 usb 3 ports on the windows 10 PC.
No luck with it even being recognized for file transfers either.
@ve6ay, I could be wrong but I would say you probably need a new port. You should be able to pick one up relatively cheap. Good luck.
That's my thought, too, and in that case, I'll forgo anything. The contract is up in October, and it got the OTA update to 7.0, so I'm okay with it for now. I'm not into opening up her phone (which hasn't even been rooted yet) to switch out a port that I'm not confident enough to switch out.

Did you try going into Developer Options and then scrolling down until you see "USB Configuration" and setting it to MTP? Or open the dialing pad and enter *#0808# and then making sure it's set to MTP, ADB and then try again.. If that doesn't work then it really is your port connection and it's actually super easy to replace and cheap too! All you'd have to do is heat the back up so you can loosen the glue up and then slowly pry the back off and then remove like 16 screws(lol) and then at the bottom you just unscrew it and easily pull the thin connection out.. I've done it several times so far although trying not to break the back glass is super hard..
The back glass got shattered in a drop last summer. So that will probably be a problem. Like I said, new phone this fall, most likely the next Note series. Though I'm tempted to go with an Exynos variant from across the ocean.
