Hello, I'm kinda new at this... I learn fast and I am not completely out of this 'world' though .
First, I was looking for a solution to install apps on my SD card... but I found a new Android world over here lols. I rooted my Xperia x8, installed link2sd and xrecovery. But I realized that when I try to upgrade the firmware or something, it says I have the latest one... but I don't, I have this:
model e15a
android 2.1 update1
m76xx-tsncjolym-53404006
kernel
2.6.29
2.0.1.a.0.47
So... I wanted to upgrade to GingerDX and it says I need baseband 15, not 06. And I read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976538
but some ppl say they don't have service to call other ppl when they flash their phone :/... I also read that some ppl had issues installing kernels and stuff...
so, my question is: How can I upgrade my phone without experiencing those problems? I mean, there are some ppl that did that without any problems, so, what should I do??? and about kernels... is it good to upgrade them?
thanks
ooooh and I was reading about JIT... i really want to install it, so any suggestion or tips on how to make my phone faster would be appreciated!
The easy way would be to install PC Companion to update your phone to 2.1.1.C.0.0, which also updates the Baseband to 015.
The harder way would be ...
Flash the E15a 015 Baseband with Flashtool.
Flash Android 2.1.1.C.0.0 with Flashtool.
Root the device (through Flashtool)
Inject xRecovery (through Flashtool)
Flash GingerDX v013 (in xRecovery)
Flash GingerDX v020 (from GingerDX v013 in CWM)
Like you pointed out there's some risk involved, though for as long as you pay attention to what you do and what the Tools instruct you to do you're on the safe side.
EDIT: As for using a custom kernel ...
That's something you need to decide for yourself. Unlocking the bootloader voids your warranty big time, if you still have any on your phone.
In case of a bad ROM flash (not entirely unheard of as it already happened to me as well) there's always the possibility to recover your phone by flashing back Stock 2.1.1 and going onwards from there.
If you somehow manage to put your device into a state from where you can't recover it yourself - i.e. you made a boo boo at unlocking the bootloader - the repair won't be covered through warranty once the service center is able to tell you tinkered around with the device at the lowest level.
PCCompanion says I have the latest version but I don't... thats why I have to do it the hard way. Hm, about the kernel... does it worth it to risk the warranty?
Oh and... I already rooted my phone, will that affect on the process of flashing and then rooting again?
Flash GingerDX v013 (in xRecovery)
Flash GingerDX v020 (from GingerDX v013 in CWM)
about that... should i download the v013 and then the v020??? i don't understand that xD, also, whats CWM? xDDD
OH CWM IS ClockworkMod Recovery (v014+).... LOL.

From my point of view it's not really worth the trouble (though I'm sure others will tell you otherwise - in the end it's a matter of perspective).
While the devs are doing a great job at the custom kernels I think they are too "bug" riddled... just look through the custom kernel threads in the Development section and make up your own judgment.

No. This does not have any impact on flashing.
Like you already worked out - re-rooting is required after you finished flashing the current bits.

Well, after you rooted the phone and injected xRecovery all you will have is Stock 2.1.1.C.0.0 + xRecovery
To update to GingerDX you need to tackle that job in two steps.
You download BOTH versions and copy them to your phone's SD card. The reason is that GingerDX v013 is the LAST version you can flash through xRecovery. Starting with GingerDX v014 you need to flash through CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery). That's why you need v013 and v020.
NOTE: If you're going with the default kernel also download the "StockKernelModules" Add-On!!!
Once you got everything copied onto your SD card and are ready to replace the Stock ROM:
- Reboot your phone
- Once the Sony Ericsson logo shows up keep on pressing the back key to get into xRecovery.
- Flash GingerDX v013
- Reboot
- Once the Sony Ericsson logo shows up keep on tapping on the screen to get into CWM.
- Flash GingerDX v020
- Flash the StockKernelModules Add-On
- Full Wipe ("Factory Reset")
- Reboot
Welcome to GingerDX
Ok thanks, I'll try it.
One more thing though... where do I find StockKernelModules? i googled it but its quite confusing xD. Oh and CWM is now called Rom Manager? will that work too?

No, CWM is NOT ROM Manager! Keep your hands away from ROM Manager!
It's NOT meant for the X8!
IF you would want to implement the dual-recovery (xRecovery + CWM) into 2.1.1 yourself - which takes way longer than flashing the two ROMs - you need to look into this thread. That would enable you to flash GingerDX v020 directly without the need to flash v013 in xRecovery first ... though the procedure will most likely take longer than doing as suggested above.
Ooooh so that means CWM comes with gingerdx v013... cuz I thought u had to install bot of em, xrec and cwm. Ok thanks!

Correctly ... the sole reason for flashing GingerDX v013 in xRecovery is to have the dual-recovery. Hence the reason why you don't even need to let v013 boot-up but interrupt the boot process by tapping onto the screen so you get into CWM to continue flashing with CWM to the currect GDX version.
Sorry if I was a bit unclear about that.
I do believe your baseband must end in 015

First, you flash the .FTF file of the baseband (I assume the file you got from Blagus' MediaFire Folder contains a baseband FTF). Once that's done you repeat with the .FTF of Android.
Yeaaah, thank you so much! I finally did it
now I have a last question hahahhaa... I made a Fat32 partition before, for Link2SD... now I have the option to install the apps directly to the SD, should I erase the second Fat32 partition I made? thanks.

Well, apart from the "App2SD" storage space it would seem you need some additional space for storing data (in /sdcard). So...
No, keep the second partition as there are several apps which store data to /sdcard (and NOT in the phone's "/data" partition as the memory there is rather low). An example of Apps that store stuff to /sdcard would be Google Music (music cache), Titanium Backup (settings and backups), Google Maps (map cache) and so on.
EDIT: Just make sure that your second partition is mounted at /mnt/sdcard (/sdcard is just a link pointing to /mnt/sdcard).
EDIT2: On a second thought ... why Link2SD? You can actually move apps to the SD card since Android 2.2 by using the built-in function of the OS ... there's a setting where you can set the default destination for app installations ("Auto" / "Phone" / "SD card").
Lol, sorry if I didn't explain it...
What I was trying to say is... I used to have link2sd, but now with gingerXD I don't have it anymore because of the android 2.2 functions. But the partition is still there, so... since I dont have link2sd anymore, should i just erase that partition?

Depends on your usage. Leaving/Changing the partition as "sd-ext" so you can move apps to the SD card would make sense in case you're playing Games on your phone.
"Angry Birds", for example, is rather large (after installation it can easily take up 40-50MB) so moving such a "hog" to the SD would make sense. Other games like "Need for Speed" only install the game into the phone memory but store game data in /sdcard themselves.
If you know you're only using small applications that will nicely fit into just the phone memory it's safe to erase the partitions, create just one large partition on the SD card and format it afterwards.
EDIT: As a practical example ...
Let us assume you have a 8GB+ micro SD card installed.
Create a 1GB partition and format it with the ext filesystem (from CWM).
Will be mounted in /mnt/sd-ext
Partition the rest and format it as a normal FAT32 partion.
Will be mounted in /mnt/sdcard

For those who like stock rom with 2.3 update .. this update is for u nd from now onwrds its not using uc kernels its jst the basic official rom with root access and blot ware removed
its pre rooted and very well tested and also its a backup file of clockwork mod recovery
there is no fancy thing don its official spice csl 2.3.4 version ... by installing this update may also solve ur warranty issue (becoz did for me) and since here in our country India the service attendant dont mind seeing super use.apk installed on the system since its now available on market so there is no worry u can take this phone to the service center anytime by flashing this recovery file ...
only work after flashing this rom and taking to the service center is to flash back the stock recovery image bt keep in mind my words AFTER FLASHING
How to do it
first u need clockwork mod recovery
then
all u need is to jst download the .zip file
extract it to ur pc
plug in ur phone to usb
mount sd card
look for the folder named as clockworkmod open it
look for folder named as backup
go into it and copy paste here the extracted files
now jst go to the recovery mod and then simply restore the backup and then after restoring is complete jst do a full data wipe full format the disk and i read somewhere that someone asked for document to go or something similar named app which came with the stock rom .. so its now there too i didnt removed it
link Stock 2.3.4 Pre rooted
reserve for future
also suggestions are welcome
To install these updates all u need is to jst put these files to root of ur sd card and then u need to flash it through recovery menu
PLZZ NOTE THAT THIS IS A UNTESTED VERSION SO BEWARE WHILE TRYING
i can not try it myself as my phone is out for service for 7 days if no one tried i will do it on my own when i get it replaced
I am downloading it now. soon i will tell more about it to you guys.
i hope will not brick my device.

assuming u mean flash it via CWM or do u mean stock recovery
i have flashed this rom. after that i started the phone, the first problem i got is the lock screen is not allowed me to go in, what ever you i do. then i reast all my data but then also it is not working, so i returned back to rc2
^hey thanx for trying... i too was supposing that lock screen might not work .. did u noticed any changes with the icons ..??
and @haree by flashing via recovery means via recovery .. this might should work with both cwm and stock rom

Currently, we can not flash/install any update.zip using stock recovery. As I have mentioned before in some thread, for our device update zip signed using all available (test) keys returns error for signature verification in stock recovery.
okk i didn't read that anywhere bt i thought signed ziped could be flashed through stock rom and as for now don't flash this rom becoz lock screen is stucked new one will use that same old stock one

The reason behind this (I guess) is that our devices have a lot many hidden settings and apk in /cda partition (/dev/block/mmcblk0p9) and many of the apps from /system/app are symlinked (shortcut) to that partition.
Lockscreen settings are also stored there, which tells device which app to open when a particular gesture detected.
And while creating custom ROM we do not mount this partition or may be their communication does not retain. I have never tried mounting /cda/ in any custom ROM that I have cooked myself. (I forgot ), but I used to delete such links.

Hello,
Since i heard and readed alot about the cyanogenMod, i wanted to flash my phone to this Rom.After folowing a vid on youtube and some research. I found out that i can't flash to cyanogenMod from android 2.3.3. So my question:
How can i do this?

I just think you can flash it with CWM, as with other ROMs.
But then there is the risk that my phone bricks? witch dont happen if u use nv flash
and if u use nvflash i get an error, and thats because im on 2.3.4
failed executing command 14 nv error 0x120000

no your phone will not brick when you really need to be unlucky, all people in here is using cwm to flash with, i think nvflash is only if you want to flash stock rom,
In CWM perform a factory reset, and to be sure, format /system /data /cache, wipe Dalvik cache, and finally flash CM7.
That had nothing to do with your installed version of android, be sure to have CWM 5.0.2.0 to have ext4 compatibility.
oke ill try that thank you for ur reactions

What batch are your talking about? In CWM you choose install a zip, select your zip file of CM7, you confirm and that's it... You do it from the phone don't you? CWM is not an external app on the computer... It's a special partition called recovery that you must flash either through ROM manager if you are rooted or through nvflash if not rooted yet (see trymhansen thread in dev section and forget movies and YouTube stuff...)..

So feamode 1.4 can be use for flashing with new kernel, can i also use it to backup existing one?

You don't need flash player to view YouTube videos anywhere. Plus you won't find it on the Play Store while on JB.

You did before JB, but you're right, won't be in the market on JB.
OP - Do you know if it worked before it was handed down to you?
Perhaps a kernel update could fix this. You have Semaphore 2.4 and it's up to 2.6.6 for JB 4.1.2.
sorry for the delay, i was bussy, but now i'm here again jijiji.

Semaphore is the kernel you're using. I would read on flashing before getting into it though.
The process is quite simple, you download the kernel (zip), put it on your sd card, go in recovery and flash it.

If you factory reset, you'll need to flash another ROM (or reflash your current one). Keep in mind that by doing this, you'll lose all your apps and data. You can back them up with a app called Titanium Backup. When doing the restore though, only restore apps and data, NO system app.

You'll need Odin one click KK4 with bootloaders, then flash Corn kernel with Odin 1.85. From there, you can flash the ROM you want as per their instructions.
succesfull!!!!!!!!!!
i use odin one click and then use the tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
then i flash with android 4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
and epic win, damn, i soo happy!!!!
thanks to everyone!!!!!!!
OK, I tried to find something similar in the forum but i don't find anything.
My problem is: I have a Vodafone I9305 . Originally, just bought it, I had vodafone applications pre-installed. Then i decided to mod the phone.
What i don't understand is: why everytime I install any modified rom (e.g. Pandoriam) the vodafone apps come back?. Before entering the first time in android, appears the screen "Installing Applications:" (My Web, Music Shop, Cloud, Contacts, NOVA3, FIFA12, ecc.).
These applications are in the modded rom (I doubt it) or are somewhere in my phone and when I install the modded rom, this install them too?
Thanks and sorry for my bad English. Carlo.
Have you got google backup set up if so that's probably why they are reinstalling each time you put on a new rom.
Hey,
i'm using a vodafone i9305 too, and i think these apps are stored in the hidden partiton. So make a test at your own risk.
NANDROID Backup (as tar), format hidden partition, flash rom.
I don't take any warranty if your phone bricks.
Also, there must be a routine that checks this partition.

That is impossible because this happens before entering in android first time, so also before setting my google account.

No! Don't go formatting hidden partition it has nothing to do with it.
You need to mount pre load and then format that.
Also in system/apps there is a preload installer.Apk, un install this too.
Problem solved
