I just used Odin to flash Darky's 10.2 RE (with plans to flash 10.2.2 and DarkCore 4.1 over it) from the Stock 2.3.5 with Bootloaders and before I did anything else to the phone, I checked to see if the softkeys are acting the way they should. This is because I tried to do it straight from Darky's 9.5 ROM and it caused the Home key to act like the back button, the Back key to act like a left arrow button, and the Search key to act like a right arrow button. The menu button is acting normally. As I said i used an Odin One-Click to flash back to stock and it fixed the softkeys. After trying AGAIN to flash to 10.2 RE the softkeys are acting EXACTLY the same as before.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is it a bug or am I doing something wrong here?
I thought possibly i need to use Odin to flash 10.1 first.
I'm going to use the One-Click to flash back to stock until I get a solution.
Thanks in advance everyone!

You need a reoriented kernel. It's acting as though you have an i9000. If auto rotation works, then you do have one but need to remap the button keys. I made a thread a while back on how to do it -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325867
Edit: after reading your post again it sounds like you're saying this happened before you flashed anything over the RE? If so, no wonder. You still need to flash the captivate kernel which should be reoriented and have the button fixes

I kinda suspected it was a kernel issue. Since my old boot screen displayed I9000 then I897 afterwards. So I should ignore the button issue until I flash 10.2.2 over it..or would that be darkcore, THEN 10.2.2? I think the autorotate did work btw. I'll try it thanks.
PS If that's the case the instructions need to be changed to tell people to flash a cappy kernel after the 10.2 RE base right?

The reason it showed i9000 then i897 is because you have i9000 bootloaders which is okay and shouldnt affect button mapping. You should flash 10.2.2 then the kernel
Okay so..i kinda goofed up a little cause i pushed the kernel with Odin after 10.2 RE. I went ahead and tried this before checking for another post. I decided to flash 10.2.2 over that and pushed the kernel again with Odin. Only key that doesn't work now is the home key. I'm going to start from scratch tomorrow and do everything in the right order.
Thanks for your help!

Well it sounds like everything is working but that I think you should just try remapping the home key it's not too hard and will save you the reflashing trouble
Ok, is there a thread that shows how to do that?

Yes. The thread I posted above. Or i might also suggest reflashing the rom but wiping data amd cache in cwm before flashing the rom.
Also dont forget to press thanks if ive helped you

Also I thought I'd mention that I can't go directly from recovery mode to download mode. The button combos to get into download mode from the phone being turned off aren't working, probably for the same reason everything else is screwed up. I have the reboot the phone and use the enhanced power menu to reboot into recovery mode and download mode. Not sure if that messes with clearing the cache and/or doing a factory wipe/reset or not..not being able to go directly from one to the other, that is.
Try flash the new rom with Darky rom tool. The tool can be downloded from market.
Darky's rom is a combination of Captivate and I9000, the installder will check the model by original build.prop file.

Hey all,
I'm new to this rooting business, and to make a long story short, after I finally figured out how to root 2.3.5 Gingerbread, I tried flashing a ROM or two to see how they work. I messed up while flashing, and resorted to using Odin3 One-Click downloader to completely clear everything on my phone. This brought me back to the 2.1 Eclair version, and now I am wondering how can I upgrade it back go 2.3? I tried using Kies, but it gets stuck at the MTP stage on my phone. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'd rather not be stuck on 2.1 even though it was my own fault
you need to go under the development section and look for the sticky with Odin one click and download a gb version that has cwm injected into the kernel

Can you get into download mode? If not, you screwed yourself over by flashing Eclair bootloaders. I think you would need adb in that case.

Is there a kernel you can flash for 2.1 that has an extended power menu? That would allow you to select a reboot into download mode. But I have no idea if that kernel exists since 2.1 is a long long time ago. (what a miserable time that was)
So I managed to flash a Heimdall One Click 2.2 version, but the problems I have with that are that it doesn't let me connect to neither Wifi nor 3G. I was going to try to upgrade it to 2.3, but when I connect it to Kies, it gets to the point where it talks about upgrading my software, but when the process of upgrading actually begins, it gets stuck and says it could not complete the upgrade. Any ideas of what to do now?
Thanks for all the previous help

kernels don't contain the power menu at all...
that is in the framework-res.apk, the framework.jar and the android.policy.jar. which is contained in the rom, be it stock or custom.

ditch kies...its garbage.
just grab a stock gingernread package from HERE since you used odin one click to 2.1 (that flashed eclair bootloaders, which is why your button combos were mesed up) you will need a a gingerbread package WITH bootloaders.

Yes, you can still use Odin.
You may need to uninstall the heimdall divers, then reinstall the Samsung ones first.

Hi Guys
I really hope someone can help me!
I've searched the forums and can't find anyone else with my problem.
I flashed ICS stunner and that was working fine.
Then I tried LiquidSmooth and eventually got that working fine.
Then I tried to go back to ICS Stunner and this is where my problems start.
I had some failed flashes with CWM and I think I've messed up the kernel.
I tried to sort this out by flashing back to pre-rooted GB rom so I could reinstall CF Kernel.
The flash in Odin appears to complete successfully, but afterwards phone just goes into bootloop at Samsung boot animation.
As I flashed back to pre-rooted stock rom I don't have recovery.
As far as I can find, to install a kernel I will need to either boot into android (which I can't due to bootloop) or install through CWM (which I can't as no longer have CWM)
Can anyone help?
Try factory reset from stock recovery.

Turn off your phone, press and hold the three following buttons together for more than 10 seconds: Volume up button + Home button + Power button
That is if you are having bootloops after flashing Gingerbread using PC Odin coming from ICS

You do not have the same issue because here nobody spoke of a missing home button.
So: What do you mean? Your home button is broken? Or you do have a device without home button?
After this is clear we can start to analyze your problem.

I'm stuck on that screen too... I have been through going back to GB and trying to get semaphore kernel on there and it just seems to hang there, even trying 3-button combo to get to recovery, it just sits on the kernel logo screen... thoughts? I can always go back to GB but then what? Trying to get to Helly Bean...
With the phone off, try holding down both the volume rocker buttons and then plugging in your USB cable while it's connected to your PC. That's what worked for me when I bootlooped last night after trying to install Helly Bean, followed by a failed firmware flash in Odin.
If that doesn't work, try each button individually...?
Yeah, eventually tried just vol+ and power and got to recovery. Helly Bean is installed, just working on getting mobile service back...
I'm on Rogers and there's a break in my understanding somewhere, I think I was running an i9000 bootloader (kernel? something...) so when I installed the HellyBean all in one, I ended up with the i9000 version, not i897. Which, i suppose is ok, as long as I can get a modem working.

As strange as it sounds Google SoggyCashew and the first result should take you to a site for captivate modems. If you are on ICS or JB the only ones you'll be able to use are the CM7 modems. Also before you flash anything go into settings > about phone and see what it says next to baseband. If it says unknown you are currently without a modem and will need to find one that works from the available list.
I don't know which one will be best but the site has a map that shows different locations and what modem worked for someone there. Also its as simple as downloading it and flashing it through cwm.
Additionally keep in mind that the modem affects the GPS also and just because you have carrier signal doesn't mean your GPS will be worth a crap. Trial and error is the only way to find a happy medium.

Hey everyone. I looked around the forums for a situation similar to mine, and didn't find a case exactly the same as mine, though it's possible I missed something. Basically, my little sister said her captivate was randomly shutting down lately, so I decided to root it for her. I rooted my own HTC Inspire this summer with no problems, so I figured I should be able to do it. The root went just fine, but when I tried to get into 3 button recovery mode, it wasn't working. I had read some stuff (obviously not well enough) and read somewhere to install the speedmod kernel. Now I'm stuck in a boot loop and can't get off of the Galaxy S/SGH-I897/SAMSUNG screen. I tried to go into download mode, but now I can't get into that mode either. Any ideas? I read on the forums about making a JIG, and I might have to end up doing that, but if I can avoid it, I'd like to. Thanks in advance.
Depending on what stock rom u were on before that flash of the speedmod kernel, it may not boot ur phone, because i believe it was froyo based. And if u got it from TRusselo's Guide thread it was there just so u could use it to reboot into cwm recovery and flash a dev rom. Have u tried holding both volume up and down & power buttons together until u see the at&t screen and then releasing the buttons ?? That should boot u into cwm. And from there u can flash a dev rom.
Download mode is--phone off, hold volume down, insert micro usb end of cable into phone, having already opened Odin or Heimdall and usb end of cable already connected to pc. Or of course, jig will do the trick for ya.
U could also try flashin an appropriate kernel for ur firmware u r on --- stock or dev'd. But u will need to still get into download or recovery for that. But i would think u should be able to boot up with no probs with a correct kernel.

I did manage to get it into download mode. I had the usb cord already connected to the phone when I was holding Volume-, so that was the problem with that. Buuuut, I can't get into CWM at all. Yeah, still can't get into recovery. I turn off the phone, hold both volume buttons and the power button, but then it just stays at and keeps reloading the samsung loading screen (which now says i9000 instead of sgh-i897 like it did before). If I let go of the power button while on this screen, it progresses through the 3G/ATT screen and finally turns on the phone. Not sure what I need to do now. More research apparently.

Well, I assumed it was the I897 one since the guide I had been using was for that version of the captivate, but I'm going to redownload one so I can be sure. The model number under phone info says "SAMSUNG-SGH-I897" and the kernel version is the "Cornv706" version.
Also, couldn't get into recovery with ROM manager either; it just got stuck at the Samsung screen.

I performed the Unbrickablemod hardware modification the other day with a friend. We did it and it showed up as the dev board. I can successfully boot it into download mode and use the one-click install in the thread. (Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312391)
But that's where I'm stuck. Heimdall performs the one-click successfully, but my Tab doesn't boot up, and the screen stays off no matter what. I saw someone having a similar issue in the main thread but they didn't post again. Someone else posted that you can get the power strip light up if you unplug it and press the power button a couple of seconds, or if you plug it to the wall charger. Both worked for me too, but I don't know where to go from here.
Any help is appreciated.

It's a GT-P1000 and I used the one-click Heimdall suite provided in the OP. I also tried Turkish firmware I downloaded from samfirmware with heimdall command-line tool. (1.3.1) Still no luck. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I wonder if you can still make the unbrickable to kick into dev mode again?
And use GB-stock-safe-v5 from overcome instead? (link in my signature)
it is a complete JQ1 (Italian) rom.
Oh, download mode via Unbrickablemod still works, I guess that's the only beacon of hope that keeps me going. I'll try it once I get back from work. I can't use it if it's in Italian, but the important thing is getting the tablet boot up and enter the recovery on its own, right?
It is European ROM, it has English.
But it is stock. If that boots, it is resurrected.

Finally got some time to work on my Tab.
I got the files, didn't know how to use them with Heimdall since the tutorial was written for Odin. Extracted all the files and followed Heimdall's usage. I guess I got something wrong, but magically, the screen came up showing the "Downloading" screen. Then it rebooted into the infamous glowing Samsung logo bootloop with vibration.
I'm now trying to go into download mode, if anything comes up I'll post about it. I have no idea how it worked but now I know I didn't bust the screen somehow when I performed the hardware mod. Thanks!
Edit: I can get it to download mode by itself. Now I need to find a PC with Windows to try Odin. Shucks.
By the way, I tried flashing Technomancer's kernel provided in the Cyanogenmod wiki to instal CM directly, but can't boot into recovery. I guess I need to complete Overcome flashing, then try flashing CM. Does that sound correct?
Edit: Thanks to this tutorial, I have successfully managed to flash Overcome and I guess CWM is also installed. My Tab is finally revived! I'll keep you up to date with the progress on installing Cyanogenmod. Thanks for all the help!
Aforementioned tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34692020
I kept following the Overcome manual, managed to install Overcome kernel and now I got CWM working! It's backing up current Overcome installation right now, I think I'm doing it right.
Edit: It's done! I got CM9 on my Tab and it works great! (Kinda. No official CWM sucks.) But it's great. I'm happy that I turned my Tab back from death. Thank you so much.
Glad it is revived.
Yeah, I am quite dismayed that cm wiki doesn't recommended overcome kernel when it is obviously the one that works best.

More people should know about Overcome.
