We just picked up a used Droid for the dev department to play with. The backlight comes on during boot up but goes off as soon as it gets into the OS. Settings appear to be normal (full brightness). Any ideas?
hard reset didn't help. The backlight goes off at the exact moment the buzzer announces the os startup. (if that makes sense)
try using other roms..
Working on rooting and loading a rom right now. I took the phone home with me and discovered the backlight isn't out just very dim. It will change slightly when I move the brightness slider around.
OK, it's now running Steel Droid with the same issue. I have a bright screen in recovery and during boot and a very dim one once booted.
try to un-check the automatic brightness, and set it to full brightness...
if that doesnt work... might be a hardware related problem...
Did that already. Seems like an odd hardware issue. I have full backlight in recovery and during boot.
Here is a video of the issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxHqN_lycG8
Stupid question: do you have auto-brightness active? If so, maybe your light sensor could be broken.

Auto-brightness is unchecked and the brightness is set to max. There is a very slight change to the brightness when I adjust the slider back and forth.
BTW. It is currently running CM7 with the same issue.

Hi, I am new to these forums and bought my nexus one one month ago. After the recent froyo OTA my ambient light sensor only brightens my screen. If the light dims and even when there is no ambient light it fails to lower the brightness and will stay bright forever.
I have tried using wipe cache and a complete factory reset from recovery mode. After this I even reflashed the official froyo OTA which is found on these forums. I am a new user and can't post links yet.
This is an AT&T, Rogers/Fido phone and it is stock. Can someone please confirm and see if this ambient light senor problem is an actual bug and exists on other phones. If not then what can I do to fix it as it was working properly before.
Yes, I have FRF83 (T-Mobile version) and that seems to be the case for me, as well: the display will only dim when I first hit the power switch to bring it out of standby. It will increase the brightness when the ambient light becomes brighter, but not vice versa. I hadn't really noticed it until now.
My suspicion is that this is intentional. The original software on the Nexus One generated a lot of complaints that the screen brightness changed unpredictably, that very minor movement of the unit would make the brightness change repeatedly. At least this way, the screen is guaranteed not to be inappropriately dim, but you will still get most of the power-saving benefit when you turn the unit on in a low-light environment.
I too believe this is intentional, I'm sure I read about it somewhere.
Alright, thank you for your responses. It would appear that they did this intentionally. As long as it's not a problem with my hardware only, I just got worried.
Hello. At first i apologize for my english.
I have a problem with my milestone. A keyboard backlight starts to work only after I opened it and change the brightness of the screen (through widget, or option menu - it doesn't matter). I have cyanogenmod 7, but it was the same on cyanogenmod 6 and 2.1 oficial firmware.
Thanks in advance for the help.
no ideas? =(
do you have the light sensor turned on? does this happen in bright day or while using in dark?
Do you have the light sensor filter on? Try turning that off. The Milestone doesn't really need a filter on the sensor.
backlight is not functioning
Hi there,
It is not a software issue and I had the same thing. Apparently these backlight breaks easily on these device. Just book it in for repairs.. I asked myself the same question for many months until I gave up and called the Motorola call centre. I hope this helps.

it doesn't matter. in both cases it doesn't works.
i think it's a software problem, because when i reboot in recovery the backlight always is turned on.
I have tried a lot of versions of cyanogen and found that a keyboard backlight is working properly only on CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC5-11.05.21 . I think it's very strange...
Try setting display brightness to 'Auto'. That worked for me.
Hi all,
For some reason, my Hero's screen would not go pass the lowest brightness setting. At first I thought that the original screen was the issue, but I've replaced that and it's still happening. If I increase the brightness slightly, it would start flickering, and if I increase it a lot it would flickers and then goes out (but everything still works, I just have to blind slide the bar down to the lowest brightness setting). Also I can not see the boot screen/recovery/anything before the lockscreen, which means I can't flash a ROM without using ROM manager.
Has anyone ever had a problem like this or know what's causing the problem and how I can fix it? I appreciate all the help. Thank you!
Hello! I have strange problems with backlight
1) back light is turned off -- i can't see anything on the screen with the day light. Changing the brightness in Settings/Display don't help.
2) but, after power off+power on, backlight is OK for 10 seconds, and turns off right after that.
I find the guy with the same problem, but on droid 2 -- youtube.com/watch?v=RxHqN_lycG8
Btw, in "AP Fastboot" mode ("M" key+PowerOn), backlight is don't turn of.
I try some ROMs, they all don't work for me. Only "kexec CM10" ROM have one difference: if I turn the phone off and on, the backlight is turning on for the 1/2 of second, I can see the lock screen, and after that it is turned off...
What can it be? How can I fix it? Any ideas will be very appreciated! I very like my Droid3,and want it back

You'll have to try to turn the brightness up manually. It may be a broken light sensor. If you get in the right light you might be able to see the background and be able to turn it up.

In the dark room, I can see everything on the screen. Unfortunately, brightness in Settings/display does not affect the backlight on my device.
I set the brightness to the maximum, but it still too dark
Is it possible that the problem is in flexible cable?
Hello there,
I got my hands on a M7, which was fully stock and working. It has some minor scratches and damaged material here and there, though it worked fine, except for phone calls only being audible in speaker mode.
I flashed TWRP recovery and installed the latest nightly of Cyanogen mod (cm-12.1-20151005-NIGHTLY-m7). Though to prevent the custom recovery from being patched I unlocked the bootloader (Not sure if that was the solution, though).
It was all fine, until the screen dimmed, and I tried powering on the screen again by pressing the power button. Though it wouldn't turn on. I even tried setting on the option to turn on screen when connected to a power source, though it never powered on again. I also noticed a slight flash of blue light every now and then, and the screen feels too sensitive. It might register a press when you're just scrolling.
Could someone help me out with this? Of course I believe a hardware fix would be appropriate, but as how everything worked until the flashes, I believe it might be fixed with some software.
Any help is much appreciated.

If you are talking about the screen not turning on (as opposed to the complete phone) Its a known bug of CM roms. The screen can't be turned back on when it was set to minimum brightness, or when the auto brightness set it to minimum. To avoid that, you'll need to adjust the brightness yourself instead of auto mode, avoiding the minimum adjustment. CM is known to be a buggy rom for the M7, you shouldn't have this issue if using a GPE or Sense rom.

Thanks for the info. I figured as much, I will try Exodus.
EDIT: I have tried Exodus, XenonHD and Dirty Unicorns. Though no success: none of them were able to turn on the display after it dimmed.
