after having problems with running out of battery:

I can now hardly get any energy in the Nook. I used the original power cord and when i plug the cable in, the Nook Color recognizes this and poweres up. The display shows a Battery sign (i booted in the stock ROM) but it dont seems to be normal. Sometimes the LED of the cord flickers green and sometimes it stays orange. Sometimes the Battery symbol goes away and pops up in a second - it seems as is there a defective contact. At the moment i have plugged in the cord and the LED stays orange. But the display says: Not charching. When i power off the Nook it stays off with the cord plugged in (which is also not normal - normally it boots again).
I tried also two other USB cords but the display says: not charging.
Sometimes (i think when it flickers) it bumps some energy into the battery which is 51% at the moment.
Do you have any hint or trick for me?
You may have a bad cord. You can power down the Nook after it is plugged in and it should stay powered off. If it restarts you have a short somewhere. Does the cable fit snugly in the port? You can't use another cord. If still under warranty ask B&N for a new cord. If not, they are $14.95 from B&N.
I've bought it in the US and iam living in germany. Can't exchange the cord on warranty

Just use another USB cable then. It will be slow but it will charge. Otherwise you can buy another adapter from b and n as stated

You cannot use another cord unless you want to completely shut down the Nook and wait over 24 hours for it to charge. The Nook cable has a 2 step pin configuration and you will not get the needed power to charge it properly. B&N ships internationally.
Pat... the only way the nook stays powered down with charger connected is if you select power off from the power menu... if you jus hold the power button it will reboot...
You can use a standard uUSB cable without taking so long to recharge if you shut the screen off after the charger is connected.

I know that Den. That is how I always charge mine. From what I have read from other users using a different cable, even when completely powered down it takes forever to fully charge. Someone else suggested using a higher capacity charger but I think that is just asking for trouble trying to force more current through less pins.
Regular micro usb cable plugged into AC will yield 1000mah charge rate, more than enough for the Nook to charge even with the screen on. I plug mine into my laptop for overnight charges (USB power yields 500mah charge rate) and the screen has to be off for it to charge. ~12 hours for it charge from <5% to full this way. Half that if you're plugged into a wall (also with the screen off).
The proprietary cable has an additional pin that lets it charge at a rate of 1900mah.
So yes, a regular micro usb cable works fine. In fact I only use the B&N cable if I'm in a hurry (due to their tendacy to break).

Weird, cause I charge it every day without it being shut down. Even with the screen on (but with the backlight off) it still charges. If the battery is dead I plug it in and one hour later the device turns on with 10% power. I then have to turn off the screen because it will stay at 10 forever until I do that which is weird cause the rest of the time I have it in that state it will charge. So yeah another USB cable is workable

i tend to say its a hardware problem. The LED of the Nook cord flickers sometimes. As i said before, Nook color tells me, it wont charge although the cord is plugged in.
The best i can do is remove my SD card where CM7 resides and boot into stock and charge from there. Although the LED flickers it charges - slowly, but it charges.
When i use another charger (with another cord) it wont charge at all. Furthermore i lost overnight again 80% of battery (booted in CM). I dont know why.
Just a further remark: Although i used the Nook cord i have connected it to a HTC Desire charger since the Nook charger dont matches to german electric network. Nevertheless i used this configuration several months and had no problems at all.
One stated that BN ships international. May i also send my Nook back to BN and do i have warranty? My Nook was bought in may.

That might be more problematic. The Nook Color is not available outside of the US. If you have a US address and credit card attached to your B&N account you may be able to have a purchased cable shipped. Trying to get a warranty claim shipped outside of the US may not be in the cards.

After scanning through the nookcolor instrction manual, i noticed that the Nookcolor is NOT supposed to charge through the usb plug if connected to a computer...
My does however and once the nook is fully charged, the "nook light" goes green just as it does when plugged into the wall AND moving files is no longer possible.
This is not really a problem as my nook usually has a permanent 67% battery power, but just out of curiosity...
Has anyone else noticed this?
I did not go to 100% so can not say about the moving files, however, changes with USB...did not see if it did before I rooted...as rooting was the 1st thing I did...
Very nice surprise to see USB changing as the non-replaceable battery (Apple kind-of drag) and ONLY B&N charger had me thinking about returning...Now with only the non-replacing battery the only issue and I have a rooted android tab/e-reader I will kept it.
Also I was one of the lucky 25% discount (paid $184 plus tax) THAT WORKED. When I tried the next day to get a 2nd one the store manager said Corp sent a message the 25% was no longer valid.
Ahhh so it happens to other people too...
Anyway, 184 dollars is dirt cheap! i live in australia so i had to get mine of ebay (bn don't ship down here) so it was $290 + $50 for express shipping from US for a grand total of 340 smackeroos! All i can say is thank god for the current US to Au exchange rates.

The Nook will charge from ANY source, it just doesn't show a light on the cable unless it's charging from the included charger. My assumption for this is that it doesn't show charging unless the current is HIGH, and the included charger is rated for 1900mAh. 4 times what a normal USB port provides. Even double what a normal phone charger provides.
So it doesn't show it's charging, but in fact it will. I've left mine plugged into my USB here at the computer messing with adb and such on and off, watching logcat etc and it slowly charges.
Yes but mine does have a light on the cable and once the power reaches 100% the ability to move files is lost and thecable light goes green, just like it does when plugged into the wall...

How long does it take to charge via USB? I feel like when my nook is plugged in with USB that battery life is maintained but a full charge would take a long time. I'm around a computer most of the day so charging via USB is much easier than a wall outlet.
The NC charger provides about 4 times the curent of a standard USB port, so it should take about 4 times as long to charge from USB as compared to the charger.
I tried posting a day or two ago about this, but wasn't able to get any replies or any help at all actually : /
Anyways, for some reason ever since I rooted my nook, when i plug a charging cable into it, it either
(a) Pulls out of sleep mode and shows the Lock Screen, which drains the batt
or
(b) Will actually turn the device ON and do the above stuff, making it really hard to charge in general
Is there any way to fix this? Right now my nook keeps hovering below the charging line and reboot looping, then when it does have enough power to actually full boot, it drains itself faster than it can charge bc it runs the screen at full brightness.

Your charger must be bad or some other such problem, because that's what the Nook does: plug it into the charger and it boots itself up or comes out of sleep to the lock screen. It will blank the screen relatively soon after if it is running correctly.
On top of that, the charger supplies way more than enough juice to charge even under heavy use.
Are you using the nook charger and the nook cable?
Im using a MicroSD cable either through the computer or through an actual AC port in an adapter.
Im basically now at the point where I can't charge the thing enough to get it past the "Battery is Dead, wait 15 mins" mark. It sucks so hard :<
Im thinking I may have to take it back to Best Buy and try again, I have the warranty on it, just I really dont want to do that! >_>;

I tried going to bestBuys (i work for them) and getting a black NC cable, no one sells any!
My next stop is going to be BN themself. Is it really that big of a difference what cable you use?

Yes, it does make a difference. A standard USB cable and charger takes 8 hours or so to charge an NC. The B&N cable and charger that came with your NC can do it in 2. Use them.
yes, it seems to make a difference. I can only connect to the PC [mounting the drive] with the originally cable. With the generic cable, it will charge but doesn't seem to charge as fast [less than half the speed]. I would suggest you try to get your hand on a original and see if there is a difference for you also.

I Just noticed That when I plug it into my computer the nook charger has an orange/Yellow LED color, but when I plug it into another computer it has a green color - without any relation to how much battery he has.
At first I thought that orange means charging and green means full But apparently that's not true.

Figured out the problem, the other computer slow usb ports were just not fast enough to chrage it, so the nook charger lighted green
Today, for the first time, I noticed my Nook Color USB power cable had an illuminated red colored "n". And that was while the cable was unplugged from the Nook Color itself. (But, obviously, while plugged into the wall charger.)
I thought to unplug the charger from the AC wall power. It takes several seconds for the LED to stop glowing. I waited about 15 seconds after the light was not visible before I plugged the charger back into the AC socket. The cable glowed red again.
Upon plugging the cable into the Nook Color, the cable shows orange again. (As I'd expect, since it's been a couple of days since I last charged my Nook.) The battery icon on the top status bar is "filling", so I think it's actually charging.
I'm used to seeing a green "n" when the battery is full. And orange/amber/yellow when charging. Until today I have not seen a red "n" at all.

I -do- find the battery is fully charging. I just have this funny feeling that I ought not leave this thing alone in the house, or take a nap, or whatever, charging. Somehow I think I'll end up on the nightly news... another "victim" of Lithium-Ion gone horribly wrong. ;-) I'll probably try, like some others I've now found via Google, to get B&N to replace the cord or charger.
Wonder if this has something to do with the poor quality of the charger? There is a thread about the chargers breaking easily and the plug bending and eventually breaking.

I love both my Nooks (they serve different purposes) but the chargers/cables are very problematic. I had a perfectly working one with my first purchase but an accident destroyed the usb connector and B&N sent me a replacement. It worked for a couple of days and then died a slow death. I ordered a second Nook and got its cable confused with the third cable sent to replace the second defective one. Both worked fine, though, for a couple of days and then suddenly the N on one turned red while plugged in to the Nook or even connected to the computer. Tried it on two other Nooks and the same thing happened. So, I'll be calling in for my fourth replacement cable. I am very glad that I paid for the warranty; it has more than paid for itself with the replacement chargers/cables that B&N has sent to me.
On a side note, when I was waiting for the replacement cable and had no other Nook charging cable available, I used my Blackberry microusb charger to trickle charge the Nook. It literally took all night but at least it was up and running the next morning. It doesn't charge fast enough to use while running apps, as the battery discharges faster than the BB charger can charge the battery.
Again, I love my Nook, even with the charger/cable issues!
I'm running Froyo off the SD. Every since I've done that, I noticed that power cord never turns green when charging is finished at 100%. Has anyone else run into this problem as well?
Ok so this nook was bought brand new in December 2010 For my mother In-law. She hasn't used it much. So I asked if I could put Android on it? She said sure cause she hasn't used it at all. As a matter of fact the NC was totally dead when she gave it to me. So I get back to my house and put it on the stock charger. I let it charge for 2 hours. I picked it up and turn it on and all I see is this message: Battery too low to power ON. I did a search and turned up similar problems but the nc where all rooted. I'm wondering if other people have had this same problem? And what they did to solve this as it is more then likely an easy fix. A. Take it back to the store and exchange it. Or. B. Send it off for repairs. C. Someone On XDA has the answer.
Also I've done some trouble shooting like trying to reset it. Also I've used 3 Other chargers and its still not charging or turning on.
Edit: It turns on it just stays at the screen with a red battery displaying the message in the title. Also after charging for a while the screen kind of lites up like its going to turn on but only goes black after that and then comes back to the same red battery screen.

what are you charging from? are you using the stock nook cable and plug?
Yes. And charging it from the wall outlet. Did that with the stock charger. my charger from my HD2 and also tried with the charger from my vibrant. All have the same affect. It has the red battery and the messege below and it also has been a total of 6 hours of charging 2 hours each with the all the chargers.
That stinks. You may have to contact B&N for it. If your using the stock and other chargers then it must be a battery failure.

Yeah seems to me thats what it must be I'll post back what I find out.
When that message is displayed, try holding the power button for 30+ seconds and then turning it back on.
That has worked for me the couple of times it seemed stuck on that screen.

If you're using other chargers, it's possible that you've damages the usb port. The NC uses a non standard usb port, which has two stages. The first stage is standard 5 pin uusb communication, the second stage is non-standard 12 pin charging...

The upside is that their charger provides power far faster than the normal microusb cords.
At this point...I'm charging mine almost exclusively from my stock evo cord.
If you don't turn off the screen when charging...it may not have enough power coming in to actually build a charge without their cable.

I never used another charger besides the stock charger that came with the NC. Up until this happened all that was ever used was the stock cable for charging. I only used another charging cable once I ran into these problems cause I figured the cable was damaged. Its happened to me before with other devices. But the same results happen with every cord I use. When I plug it in it lights up and shows the red battery screen. So that tells me that the cord or USB port couldn't be the problem. Cause its clearly getting power its just not charging.

When charging I can not turn the screen off it's stuck on the screen with a red battery.

No. They sell it without one...the 8GB internal storage is enough for looooottts of books. The microsd was just a nice + for people with lots and lots of music.
I had this issue as well, but I found a fix!
No matter what I did or how long I let it charge, it would always have that red low battery icon.
What I ended up doing to fix it was opening up the back of the unit and disconnecting the battery cable from the unit. I then plugged it directly into the wall without the battery connected to see if it would boot, though I don't know if that was necessary, I don't even remember if it booted that way or not.. I think it did not.
Anyway I unplugged the power cable again, reconnected the battery, then plugged in the power cable and tried to boot and it booted up perfectly after that. The battery icon indicated 13% charge, but it quickly charged back up just fine.
FYI I left the unit in the car overnight right before this happened, and it was pretty chilly that night, 10-20 degreed Fahrenheit. I suspect that caused the issue for some reason, so I've been sure not to do so since.
P.S. I had to do a fair amount of googling around before I found good instructions on taking apart the NC. I think I had to take off the 2 screws under the SD card slot and use a butter knife to just pry the back off. It's just held in with clips and you can't tell it was opened except for the little stickers over the screw holes.

Thanks for the feed back. I'm wondering by un-pluging the battery from the nook if it resets it. Kind of like if a phone freezes or if your computer freezes and you pull the battery. Seems like a plan. Not sure if this is what I'll do as I'm sure its still under warranty. If it comes back and its not covered or B & N wont replace it I guess thats my only hope.

I had this problem too, but I'm not sure "faulty" is the right word for the cable.
My friend borrowed my nook and returned it with a dead battery (Thanks asshole). So I plugged it into my computer at work and just got the always-on low battery message. After 45 minutes I took it to my car so I wouldn't forget it. I plugged it into my USB charger in the car using a different cable. Two hours later, same state.
When I got home I pugged it into the Nook wall charger with yet another cable (not the nook's original) and got the same thing. I searched here to see if I could figure out what was going on and decided to try the original cable with the wall plug. literally two seconds after plugging it in it started booting into Froyo.
I'm sure I didn't have four "faulty" cables. I think those that are saying you should be using the original are correct. The others worked fine when the battery wasn't empty, but mine only responded to the original once it got to the point of the unending low-battery message.

solution I found
Have CM7 installed on SDCard, got the battery icon, even with the unit plugged into the charger with oem equipment. Held the power button 'til the unit turned off completely, removed the sdcard, rebooted. Nook booted into stock fine, turned off, re-inserted sdcard and rebooted. All is well.
Hi,
I seem to have a peculiar problem with my brother's Nook HD+. When I plug it into the wall charger, the device shows a green light, which turns orange and the Nook powers on to show the Nook logo, but all of a sudden it switches off and the light disappears too.
I have tried holding down the power button while the device is plugged in, holding the n and power button down, using another charger, but nothing seems to work.
How can I troubleshoot this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd suggest leave it plugged in and charged with the BN wall-charger for 4-6 hours.

The device is not charging, the orange light does not glow.
Here is what happens after plugging it into the charger - the light turns green for 2 seconds, then orange, the screen comes alive with the nook logo and then all of a sudden, the screen wipes out blank and the charging light also switches off.
I've tried to put it on charge the whole night, tried to turn on the device, hard reset - nothing worked.
Had a very similar issue with mine when I first got it. Turned out it was my USB cable, I called Barnes and Noble and they sent me a free replacement.

I've tried using two different USB cables. The other one is from my other Nook HD+, both the cables seem to be working fine on the other Nook.
I have the exact same issue with my nook right now. It has cm 10.1 installed. But my screen isn't even flashing on at all. It just charges green for 2 seconds, charges orange for 2 seconds, then goes black. Won't turn on. I've had it charges for like 2 days with no luck. Have you figured out what was wrong with your nook yet? I'm going to get a new cord this weekend I guess. Can't think of anything else to try.

My last effort got it going. plugged it into a PC at that point it went green , then yellow, but this time stayed on yellow after about 40 minutes it booted.. I was elated.Hope this helps:laugh:

Thanks! Went to a B&N today and got a new cord. Plugged my nook into the charger at their display booth and it showed the charging screen and the LED stayed orange. I was stoked, so I assumed the cord was broken and I bought a new one. Tried it at home, and same #%^#ing problem: green for 2 seconds, orange for 2 seconds, and then off. No screen boot up or battery charging display. Last resort, plugged it into my computer, and it is keeping the orange LED on (yay), but still hasn't booted. It's been a couple of hours, so hopefully it boots here soon. I'm gonna keep it charging with my computer overnight and see if that fixes the problem. Then (if it ever boots), I'm going to put a new OS on the thing so hopefully I don't have to fuss around with the issue anymore. Thanks Ifearnogod. I also fearnogod.

Thanks! Went to a B&N today and got a new cord. Plugged my nook into the charger at their display booth and it showed the charging screen and the LED stayed orange. I was stoked, so I assumed the cord was broken and I bought a new one. Tried it at home, and same #%^#ing problem: green for 2 seconds, orange for 2 seconds, and then off. No screen boot up or battery charging display. Last resort, plugged it into my computer, and it is keeping the orange LED on (yay), but still hasn't booted. It's been a couple of hours, so hopefully it boots here soon. I'm gonna keep it charging with my computer overnight and see if that fixes the problem. Then (if it ever boots), I'm going to put a new OS on the thing so hopefully I don't have to fuss around with the issue anymore. Thanks Ifearnogod. I also fearnogod.

Had the same problem with the Grandson's, pressed and held numerous button combinations no luck so sent it back to argos for a complete swap out replacement. Guess what after a couple of days the replacement unit did the same thing. Now i'm tearing my hair out after looking through various forums with no answer i tried the daughters Galaxy note charger and bingo it worked, it appears that the original charger supplied with the nook HD plus is not powerful enough to do the job from a completely discharged state. I've told him not to allow it to go completely discharged and we haven't had a problem since with the nook supplied charger.

I have the same problem, but with my Nook HD (not HD+). I used a different adapter at one point because I lost my Nook adapter. This may have caused the problem for me.
I've got a Nook HD that's acting like this, if I plug it into my computer or into the original charger it blinks green orange green orange, but never powers on. I've held the power button until it starts flashing orange only but it never charges it. When it's connected to the PC it keeps popping up a usb device failed to install prompt so I am thinking that this means the cable is working. I bought a replacement battery to put in it. Hoping that fixes the issue.
I did try it with another usb charger and it changed it's behavior slightly. It would flash green orange then show the N logo then shut off. If I left it on this usb charging adapter it still never would charge it up.
That is why I'm suspecting that it's a bad battery.
I'll get another charging cable next if that doesn't work.

I would go with testing a new cable / wall plug before anything else - but then for the price I would probably just jump on it then chuck it before spending money on a proprietary cable for an aging device.

Aging device? I would try to get a new cable/charger under warranty. Stores will do that if you can show the old one defective.

Its aging to me. Its been out for a long time now. I would go with something newer [then spend money on it] - but that's subjective - so I'm not getting into any debate here.
So they do that with just the cable - that's cool stuff.

yeah the battery didn't fix the issue. It's still not charging, if I connect the charging cable and adapter while it is turned off it turns it on, flashes green orange a couple of times then goes solid green. It boots up but I'm running on the remaining charge in the replacement battery I put in. visual inspection of the charging jack on the nook HD doesn't show any issues, visual inspection of the cable also doesn't show any issues. I'm going to take it to the closest barnes and noble and hope that they are willing to give me a new charging cable today. I guess we will see. Hopefully a new charging cord will fix the issue.

Make sure you still have stock on it if taking the device to the store. Alternate ROMs void the warranty. Maybe you can just take your charger and cable along with your serial number if the device is not stock. They can test to see if it charges their devices.

my nook HD have booted on. when i plug it in a DELL's laptop. the light was green -> orange -> and still orange, after few minutes it boot on and install 148update :laugh::good::laugh::good::laugh::good:
The battery not charging and tablet appearing dead other than the led is a common problem with tablets, not just the nook.
In the tablet they use a chip that has a controller integrated to charge lithium ion batteries. The controller has limits that have to fall into a preset range or the controller will not allow charging. If the battery voltage is low enough , the controller will experience a spike in current when the power is connected, that will trigger an excessive current limit in the controller which blocks it from charging the battery. The cycle repeats over and over and it will not charge because it is never on long enough to get the battery voltage higher.
The fix is easy on most tablets including the nook. You have to open up the case , will void warranty, unplug the internal battery and then connect that battery to an external charger for about 20 minutes to get the battery voltage up high enough to stop the over limit from occurring. I have about 6 tablets of various models that wouldn't turn on or charge and all were fixed and working great by doing the above. Actually a way to get tablets cheap if you see some with the same symptoms.
On the nook the wires you need to connect to charge on the battery are any red for + and any black for - . There are I think 3 red and 3 black bunched together on the connector, any one will work. After charging re-attach the battery and it should boot right up. Just be careful about letting the nook get below about 10% charge.
The charger you use can be just about any standard charger that can charge 7 volt lithium cells, the nook has them wired in series , 2 batteries x 3.7 ~ 7.4V.
A good cheap one that takes out having to worry about charger settings is :

Here's my story:
Rooted, running CM11 no problems. Read some comics, decided to download and try out Dragon Age from the play store. I had ~35% battery remaining (hard to tell exactly, circular battery mod). After the game downloaded from the store, I opened the app and it began to download the larger files the game requires. I sat the Nook down while it was downloading and eventually the screen turned off/timed out. I tapped the power button to see where the download was and it would not turn on.
So, as of now, pushing the buttons in any combination for any amount of time does nothing. Plugging the tablet into the wall gives me a green light only (never orange). Holding the power button (and any button in combo) for ~10 seconds kills the green light. Pressing the button again lights the green light. I've left the tablet on the charger for over eight hours, two different times now, no change.
Plugging the tablet into the PC acts the same as above, however the PC also repeatedly gives USB device connect/disconnect warnings (sounds) for a bit.
WTF, any advice?
