So I was just kinda curious about this. Personally I use either handcent or chomp sms. But I want to know why no one has improved the lag issue on the stock messaging app. I personally get and receive about a thousand texts every other day. And deleting them can be difficult ex. I got invited to a wedding and deleted the info. I was wondering if anyone is working on it or if they just say use chomp and handcent.

So I just checked and it seems like the latest cyanogen nightly has fixed it. It loaded up over a thousand texts and opened the app in a blink of the eye. I'll see if performance continues

Here's what's up:
Depending on what what network (GSM or CDMA) your receiving the txt from, it will split. If a message is going from CDMA to GSM or vise versa, the message will split due to some technology differences. While GSM to GSM or CDMA to CDMA will not split. So it doesn't matter what app you use, results will be the same although I think GO SMS has the option to kind of group consecutive messages a couple seconds a part.
Don't blame the phone or Android.
That's the answer to your question in a nutshell. You really can't "fix" the incompatability of the 2 technology types.
Just my 2 cents since I used to wonder the same thing. Now I accepted it and thanked myself for owning a phone with threaded messaging and moved on with life lol

Thanks bro for clear explanation
I wonder if Handscent can have this option I ll try Go SMS to see if i like it
No problem!
I tried handcent once, but GO is just so much better to be completely honest. Its also faster.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? I've been doing some digging around myself, but haven't had much luck. If we can at least figure out what is causing it, and get going in the right direction, I'm positive we can get it fixed. I've got a few Android geniuses at my disposal also who I'm working with to get things smoothed out.
If your not digging the stock MMS app and don't like GoSMS like me, I've been using the MMS.apk from Cyanogen Mod 9. It has the same issues as the stock app, but at least it looks good. Just replace your stock one in /system/app and match the permissions of the stock ( 0644 ).

Have you tried Handsent? I haven't had any issue with mms.
I've tried them all.. I just can't get used to it. And I can receive pics but they won't send and my texts seem to cut off at 80 char. I've tried APNs, but that didn't help.

I also have been getting my texts cut off at 80 characters. Is there some way we can force the system to chop the original message into separate texts, each being 80 characters max? It's not a GREAT fix, but it seems easy enough to me, as GOSMS can do the same thing, only with 160 chars.
I just bought an SIII, so i havent been messing with the thrill too much. I think its just a 4.0 problem though. Ive got nothing to go on at this point, but if anyone has some tips I'd be glad to try it out since I can use it as a tester.

I'm having trouble getting emoji to work in my SMS apps. Emoji works everywhere EXCEPT SMS apps. I downloaded GO SMS and the emoji plugin, and could only see the ones I sent. Received ones are boxes with question marks in them. I tried the same with Handcent and couldn't get it to work either. I had this same issue with my Evo LTE, but never had this problem on my Evo 3D. Could it be some interference with Jelly Bean?

Go SMS + emoji work fine on my note 2 running stock jb 4.1.2, have you tried disabling/freezing the stock messaging app?

I looked through settings and didn't see anything related. I hope this is something that just requires an app update. I still have at least a week till I will receive my One but if emjoi does't work my fiance will be pissed.

Yeah. It's especially annoying since I had this problem on my LTE. I was hoping that getting this device would fix the problem.

Another odd symptom I just found: my battery drained to 32% after three and a half hours, and GO SMS Emoji Plugin was causing most of the battery drain (61%). Not sure why that would happen.

I've been on Evolve since it came out (I still had my S4). It would crash constantly and I would never be able to send/receive pics and the Dev is a d!ck. Got my S5 and been on the stock messaging app and haven't looked back! Might try out Hoverchat (previously NinjaSMS).
I'm finding stock to be really sluggish with a lot Of lag. I uSe textra. It's very fast.

Actually since you mentioned hover chat. I tried it and loved it!!
Then like every single other app, something is missing.. can't send videos..
so it gets a big F
Only had the phone a weekend, so take this with a grain of salt. . .
Started stock obviously, but I got sick of Touchwiz on day 1 so switched to the Google Launcher.
When I did that, Google tries to take everything, (msg app included) so I started using Hangouts.
It is horrible. Really bad. The basic functionality is OK, but it is the other garbage that they stick in the way that annoys so much.
Sure- I could send this message using G+, but why would I, and now you've made me waste time telling you that.
Back to standard app, which seems better than previous Samsung versions. Open to suggestions though

I'm using Go sms pro. Found the stock app to be really laggy especially with large conversations. I think it was trying to load all the convos or something, as go sms only loads a handful at a time. Also has nice themes etc

I'm using Hover Chat since I used my S3. And now, I'm still using it on my S5.
I don't know, but I love the interface and all.

EvolveSMS: it's well designed, fast and has a clean and sharp ui.

I'm using Handcent as I like the level of customisation, the missed text reminder, different missed text tone options, plus able to give different contacts different LED colors, flash rates and vibration patterns. I've been using it for years and haven't come across anything better...
Hello. It's great, it works, it's light and clean. It fires up way faster than the stock app.

Hoverchat because I love the chat heads clone on it.
I used to use hangouts, but not being able to stack pictures into a single MMS (hoverchat doesn't either but whatever) led me to trying others.

I also use Textra. It's simple, light, and I love the quick reply window that pops up whenever I get a text.

Galaxy S does that by defaut (excepted led color + flash rates) since S3 i think (i was using Light Flow for that back then).
Yes, i'm using defaut app, best to keep things simple imo.
I only install google keyboard to get better recognition while swyping.
I wonder how some people could crash it as i had some history of several years of messages imported and never seen any messaging app crash on any of my Galaxy S.
