Here's what's up:
Depending on what what network (GSM or CDMA) your receiving the txt from, it will split. If a message is going from CDMA to GSM or vise versa, the message will split due to some technology differences. While GSM to GSM or CDMA to CDMA will not split. So it doesn't matter what app you use, results will be the same although I think GO SMS has the option to kind of group consecutive messages a couple seconds a part.
Don't blame the phone or Android.
That's the answer to your question in a nutshell. You really can't "fix" the incompatability of the 2 technology types.
Just my 2 cents since I used to wonder the same thing. Now I accepted it and thanked myself for owning a phone with threaded messaging and moved on with life lol

No problem!
I tried handcent once, but GO is just so much better to be completely honest. Its also faster.

Thanks to Product F(RED), I have found my favorite texting app. GoSMS! You might have heard of it, you might have not, but so far it is 5x better than Handcent and 100x better than the Android SMS Default. Let us know if you use this app, and what you think of it here! Have a great weekend!
I love gosms. I've tried to settle for others and even for the stock messaging app but the themes are awesome. And the widget is cute also.

Very! Its alot more clean and "put-together" than handcent and many others. Have you used any other sms apps before?
I'm using it too as my sms app.

I liked it, but saw no reason for me to switch from my default which is smooth, clean, good-looking and straight-forward. But, yeah definitely a lot better than the alternative ones (handcent etc...).
Yep! For the Android Texting app, its a great example of "Too Simple." We love flexibility nowadays

Could you tell us Handcent-users what Go-SMS actually does better than Handcent? I don't see a big difference.
I use GoSMS to and i like the app.
I tried some other before like handcent sms but GoSMS is my favorite.
Handcent SMS causes some big lags for me. Furthermore there were some errors in displaying some MMS. When i tried GoSMS this bugs did not appear.
Great APP but there is a problem with it. if an SMS comes in and the popup windows comes on and you are not near the phone and the screen turns off, the popup goes away (as it should) BUT so does the SMS notification and the SMS is marked as READ. this means the reminder function of the program does not work.
How do I resolve this? Im on the EVO4G

For starters; GO SMS, unlike Handcent, doesn't look like a giant pile of sh*t being rendered onto your Android screen.

**EDIT**
DONE! AOSP is the man, ya'll This thread can be closed!
ICS Messaging App for Nexus S 4G can't split messages, well, it does, but they come out all jumbled up. And, it can't send or recieve pictures. So, I'm asking if anyone of the bada** dev's can fix it. I know it's been fixed in GB, I'd like it to be fixed for ICS.
I've tried MOST of the ICS ROMS available for NS4G and every one is the same in this regard, if I'm wrong and there is a ROM that addresses this, please let me know... Thanks!
Also, I've tried Handcent and GoSMS, they both do the same thing on ICS, so, if it's not the app and it's the code for this release of ICS, please let me know. And I understand that CMDA phones don't contain the feature to split SMS, but my phone hardware hasn't changed from GB to ICS and this worked for me with GB, so shouldn't it be able to be done?
Any takers?
I'm sure when the cm9 release candidates come about you will receive exactly what you are looking for. My guess is it wasn't a stock GB rom you were running when you had the 160 split.
There is NO 4G on the Ice Cream Sandwich roms. Check back in January.

Yeah, it was Oxygen on GB...
So is it because of the ROM and not the app?

I'm just going out on a limb here and say yes. Either that or the SMS code was edited on gb to allow it and no one has figured it out on ics?

If you've tried handcent and go sms then you would know they both have an option to split messages if you look in the settings menu right?

Yeah, they both actually do it by default. However, when the text comes through, it's jibberish. The stock ICS app actually splits the messages by default (at least the one in all of the ROMS I've used) but the messages come out on the other end as jibberish.

OK, I just sent an MMS (random pic from gallery) to myself and it worked. I'm running aops's ICS 4.0.1 with working MMS.
As for splitting SMS and getting gibberish, haven't come across that yet on this rom as I haven't had a chance to send longer than 160 words SMS's yet.

I'm running the same ROM....
So the only pics I had tried to send before reading this post was a screenshot from the phone. It just hung and said it was sending.... would sit like that for days.
So, I sent myself a gallery photo and it worked. After that I tried a screenshot and it worked! One of the messages I had tried to send two days ago all of a sudden went through and my friend got it. So he sent me a screenshot of his phone and I was able to download it, which didn't work before either. Very strange.
Another oddity is that now when I reach 160 characters, I can't type anymore. Before I could type multiple messages at once but they would be jumbled up on the other end.
It's dumb, I know, but I feel like sending that gallery pic "reset" my messaging app. I hadn't done anything different prior to sending that gallery photo...
Very strange, but I can live with it. Tiny price to pay for ICS.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
To get the texts to go out and not be jobberish you have to add the counter option in handcent or gosms. There is an option in handcent where you have to add the counter and split the text.. so when it sends out a text that is over 160 characters... it labels it 1 of 2 and 2 of 2.. This will get rid of the jibberish and fix your issue..
But you are correct a developer will have to add this option for the stock app to work right...
Hope that helps and is understandable..

Correct. Oxygen was one of the few that split correctly. Its all in the xml edits
I'm on AOSP oICSv21 and the stock messaging app does not allow texts over 160. I would love the ability to split messages again. That seems like such a base feature to be left out...

you guys know that the source code out isn't for cdma, right? just chill out and wait for the cdma version of the rom and then it will work. it's close to impossible to modify the apk to split sms automatically.

um that is how it first came about. Someone modified the apk for stock SMS on the evo 4g. He released it here on xda and then pushed it to the Cyanogenmod git. That is how cm7 got messaging split. Stock gingerbread does not split. Not even on the nexus s 4g.

As many people suggested SMS pop is great, if you just want SMS pop up. You could also try chomp SMS and GO!SMS, you'd have to get use to a new texting app though. GO!SMS is nice though IMO. I prefer stock ICS Message app but meh
Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? I've been doing some digging around myself, but haven't had much luck. If we can at least figure out what is causing it, and get going in the right direction, I'm positive we can get it fixed. I've got a few Android geniuses at my disposal also who I'm working with to get things smoothed out.
If your not digging the stock MMS app and don't like GoSMS like me, I've been using the MMS.apk from Cyanogen Mod 9. It has the same issues as the stock app, but at least it looks good. Just replace your stock one in /system/app and match the permissions of the stock ( 0644 ).

I also have been getting my texts cut off at 80 characters. Is there some way we can force the system to chop the original message into separate texts, each being 80 characters max? It's not a GREAT fix, but it seems easy enough to me, as GOSMS can do the same thing, only with 160 chars.
I just bought an SIII, so i havent been messing with the thrill too much. I think its just a 4.0 problem though. Ive got nothing to go on at this point, but if anyone has some tips I'd be glad to try it out since I can use it as a tester.

I use Handcent SMS which the black theme. It is a free app and I think it looks better than the stock Sony one because the main colour is black. The stock one isn't the best for when it is sitting on my desk at work due to the washed out whites.

Plenty of people still use SMS.

1. Even if you have unlimited SMS, it's still far far inferior to e.g. Whatsapp. Just the fact that you can't have group-conversations is enough... when you go on holiday or meet with a group somewhere... it's just so much more convenient. Not to mention sending images, location, videos...
2. In my country, when you have coverage, you have 2G/GRPS also. It's enough to use Whatsapp.
3. Everyone here has Whatsapp... and i mean everyone. In fact providers had to completely change their plans because nobody was texting anymore.

Everyone should do what I do, use their phone the way I do and make sure their friends all use the same messenger that I do and they're wrong if they don't.
All your friends may be up with technology and have a phone that's capable of using messengers, but don't assume that is the case for everyone. SMS can be sent/received by feature/dumb phones that many of my older relatives and friends still use, therefore they are still useful for ME.
Anyway, I don't understand why you're in here arguing about the way other people use their own phones. Mind your own business!

I was just curious since I didn't expect people on XDA actually still using an inferior service like SMS...that's all. It's a forum right? "discussion"?
Over here Whatsapp actually makes people buy smartphones... even 'older' (50+) people buy smartphones so they can use Whatsapp and stay in contact with their family.

Android 4.1 is missing the simple code to oranize group message. If Sony is using the stock messenger with a skin then you have to use another messaging application. This feature was added to Android in 4.2.
