Which one works the best on the Xperia Z
Sony's stock Messaging app. But SMS/MMS is so old school. I mainly use WhatsApp and I have Viber too.

I use Handcent SMS which the black theme. It is a free app and I think it looks better than the stock Sony one because the main colour is black. The stock one isn't the best for when it is sitting on my desk at work due to the washed out whites.

Plenty of people still use SMS.
1. I have unlimited SMS on my plan.
2. You can still send/receive them when data coverage is spotty/non-existent and IM apps may struggle.
3. Everyone has SMS capabilities on their phone, so I can contact anyone without worrying if they use the same messenger as me etc.

1. Even if you have unlimited SMS, it's still far far inferior to e.g. Whatsapp. Just the fact that you can't have group-conversations is enough... when you go on holiday or meet with a group somewhere... it's just so much more convenient. Not to mention sending images, location, videos...
2. In my country, when you have coverage, you have 2G/GRPS also. It's enough to use Whatsapp.
3. Everyone here has Whatsapp... and i mean everyone. In fact providers had to completely change their plans because nobody was texting anymore.

Everyone should do what I do, use their phone the way I do and make sure their friends all use the same messenger that I do and they're wrong if they don't.
All your friends may be up with technology and have a phone that's capable of using messengers, but don't assume that is the case for everyone. SMS can be sent/received by feature/dumb phones that many of my older relatives and friends still use, therefore they are still useful for ME.
Anyway, I don't understand why you're in here arguing about the way other people use their own phones. Mind your own business!

I was just curious since I didn't expect people on XDA actually still using an inferior service like SMS...that's all. It's a forum right? "discussion"?
Over here Whatsapp actually makes people buy smartphones... even 'older' (50+) people buy smartphones so they can use Whatsapp and stay in contact with their family.

You asked who uses SMS, so I told you why I personally still use SMS. No need for you to tell me it's 'inferior' or how you use your phone or how many people bought phones just for Whatsapp (lol by the way).
Just so you know, I was joking with the whole mind your business thing. It just seems strange how some people want to enforce their way of doing things on others, that's all.

Android 4.1 is missing the simple code to oranize group message. If Sony is using the stock messenger with a skin then you have to use another messaging application. This feature was added to Android in 4.2.

Could you tell us Handcent-users what Go-SMS actually does better than Handcent? I don't see a big difference.
I use GoSMS to and i like the app.
I tried some other before like handcent sms but GoSMS is my favorite.
Handcent SMS causes some big lags for me. Furthermore there were some errors in displaying some MMS. When i tried GoSMS this bugs did not appear.
Great APP but there is a problem with it. if an SMS comes in and the popup windows comes on and you are not near the phone and the screen turns off, the popup goes away (as it should) BUT so does the SMS notification and the SMS is marked as READ. this means the reminder function of the program does not work.
How do I resolve this? Im on the EVO4G

I have a rooted/rommed wifi-only S1 and my GF has a Blackberry 9780. She is currently overseas for X amount of time and the only way we can talk is by calling each other which is extremely expensive, or using skype which means she has to borrow a friend's laptop or android device. She has service on her phone over there, unsure of what type of plan.
I came up with the idea of using my old BB 8330 and figuring out how to use BBM or something similar on wifi-only, but it turns out that 'ol phone doesn't have wifi on it. It's too bad I sold my last BB some time ago which was an 8530 and had wifi. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm now wondering if there's an app I can use on my S1 that she can also use on her 9780 that would allow us to text and or talk. Something like BBM that doesn't require me to have service or a data plan. I imagine there's at least one app out there that would do this and also be available to BB users.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure we can use KIK but it's text only. I may be getting greedy with wanting text and talk, but having both would be awesome.
Does her phone have a browser? If so, you could use any site like ebuddy to talk. Or even get on something like palringo (dunno if there's a bb version?) but there must be something alike.

She has service and we *think* her data is unlimited. She also has a wireless router at her flat so wifi helps if the data is limited/costly.
We're trying to use apps over our current methods or using something browser based mainly for convenience. Something like whatsapp or KIK would work perfectly from what I understand, but they're text-only. Not a huge problem, but if I can find text+voice that would be great. Skype is normally the answer to that question but her phone, or more specifically her service provider, isn't compatible with skype from what I'm seeing.

Turns out you need a number for viber and my device is wifi-only. After some research I found that you can use any phone number that can receive SMS because it's for them to send you a registration PIN. I tried both my GV and Heywire numbers and haven't received that text on either one. :\

Only had the phone a weekend, so take this with a grain of salt. . .
Started stock obviously, but I got sick of Touchwiz on day 1 so switched to the Google Launcher.
When I did that, Google tries to take everything, (msg app included) so I started using Hangouts.
It is horrible. Really bad. The basic functionality is OK, but it is the other garbage that they stick in the way that annoys so much.
Sure- I could send this message using G+, but why would I, and now you've made me waste time telling you that.
Back to standard app, which seems better than previous Samsung versions. Open to suggestions though

Galaxy S does that by defaut (excepted led color + flash rates) since S3 i think (i was using Light Flow for that back then).

It is considerably slower than a traditional SMS app (slower to launch and occasionally stutters) and you have to agree to Verizon holding on to your text messages for 90 days on their servers.

hahahah awesome bro!
Another Google flop.
Why is it so....lacking?! Even reply from the notification is limited to the quick replies from allo. Google made replies from notification along with this app and Nougat, but didnt implement it correctly? This is a stripped down hangouts. Can't even use it for SMS. it just doesnt make any sense.....uninstalled in 15 minutes. Will reconsider if some minor, yet crucial tweaks are made.
With no sms integration. This isnt going to last very long. The fact that you can't have it like hangouts where it's both an sms and instant messaging is going to kill it. I hate. No loathe the fact that now I have to have yet another app for instant messaging and a separate app for sms
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Another useless google attempt. I don't use any google product if there is a good alternative. This company has so much user info it's scary.
Absolutely pointless! Uninstalled
If they add a web interface, it will replace Hangouts/SMS with those close to me very quickly because of the SMS fallback. But without a way to use it on other devices, I have no use for it.
This app is completely pointless. I don't care how pretty it is.
Whenever I sit and try my best to like an app, its usually gone for me in a day. The assistant is interesting, so maybe thats worth working with, but I will stick to my messaging app. I use pushbullet on my laptop so I can send/receive sms, still works well.
I really want to like it but if it can't be set as default SMS, doesn't auto backup my SMS, has no desktop client, doesn't import all my current messaging history I can't see myself using it. From the gripes I'm seeing around comment sections I know many feel the same.
I enjoy it for what it's worth, an IM client. Most of my friends and family are using it now so getting the most of it. Admittedly though, if your circle isn't into it becomes useless. The sms integration (?) is bizarre to say the least

I was ery excited about this because i thought it was gonna be on par with imessage (before iOS10) But i was extremely disappointed to see the horrible SMS integration. Sure i can probably convince 2-3 of my friends to use it But i dont want to have to remember who has it and who does not.
Correct me if im wrong but i believe that during the demo at Google IO that they said for peope who do not have it it would post your google assistant stuff via MMS so that the people who your SMSing would see it.
I like it but with iMessage iOS10 update and the lack of SMS its really dumb.
