I appologize in advance if I missed a thread addressing this. But here is my problem.
I'm running system version 5.6.890 stock rooted (thanks to the great folks here).
The next step I wanted to take was to install CWM Recovery and perform a backup. I downloaded ROM manager from the marketplace, installed it, selected Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. It worked and it now says my current recovery is ClockworkMod 5.0.2.6. The "backup current ROM" feature in ROM manager will not work, so I selected the "reboot into recovery" feature in ROM manager and all it does is reboot the phone normally.
How do I get the phone to boot into recovery? I know I'm missing something simple and I've tried searching the forum but I had no luck. Thanks in advance for your help, you guys have an awesome forum here and I've already learned alot, but the acronyms are kicking my ass!
You need a bootstrap, go into development section and look into the safestrap topic, read instructions and download

That's what I thought, and I actually read through that thread, but I'm still not understanding it. I guess I need a more detailed explanation on what exactly a boot strapper does and how to implement it. Is there some kind of noob "dummy" guide you can point me to that will explain all of the main things about rooting/recovery/roms etc? I wish there was an all in one explanation guide I could read that would clear up alot of my questions so I dont have to post a bunch of times. I keep reading threads but they are geared at people that already know the basic stuff, which in my case I dont lol.
Okay so I downloaded and installed bootstrap recovery. Hit "bootstrap recovery", granted it root access. Then hit reboot recovery and it rebooted into CWM recovery. But I cannot perform a backup, it says it can't mount SD card?
Try going to mounts and storage - mount sd card. See if that works for ya.

I tried that and it just says it cant mount SD card?
After more reading I really screwed up I think. I wish I would've went the safestrap route instead of CWM route. Now I'm stuck with a CWM install that won't let me perform a backup, and I have absolutely no idea how to uninstall the CWM recovery so I can safely install safestrap.
There are millions of android forums on the net and I've searched this forum up and down, searched google, youtube, and I'm more confused now than when I started! It's amazing how there is so much info out there yet nobody can ever put any of it into english. I can't find a straight answer anywhere, and it amazes me there are not stickies with step by step guides on how to do this stuff. I've never had so much trouble learning something in my life. How is a newbie supposed to pick this stuff up? I'm not completely stupid when it comes to this stuff, I have a decent understanding of how things work, but the acronyms on android forums are at higher level than anywhere I've ever seen. I just wish I could find some good write-ups that went into explanations about how things work.

If you want to use safestrap, just uninstall CWM bootstrap via settings -> applications -> manage applications. Install and open Hashcodes safestrap, click install recovery. It will take care of any files left over from CWM. Reboot hit [menu] at the safestrap splash screen you will be in recovery.

Finally, a clear answer! This is exactly what I wanted to know. I was thinking I would need to manually remove files leftover from CWM bootstrap.

Normally you would, but not with Safestrap
I did this and now I'm stuck and the dual core screen and phone wont boot.
After a SUPER long night and wanting to blow my brains out, I got my phone working again. I had to reflash it to a stock rom. I used the method and files from this post http://rootzwiki.com/topic/4370-sbf-droid-3-fastboot-files-55959-and-56890/ .
I know have a bone stock non-rooted phone that works again. I guess that installing the safestrap without removing files from CWM recovery install wasnt a good idea? I would like to re-root this thing and get safestrap installed correctly and perform a nandroid backup, but I want to avoid problems this time.

You cannot use Rom manager, the CWM recovery that is uses isnt for the D3. If you go to the market there is a D3 bootstrap which installs the recovery and then you boot into recovery from the application. OR if you dont want to spend any $$ you can install Hashcodes safestrap.

I would suggest the safestrap, after you install the APK open it up and click install recovery. After that is done reboot your phone and you will see a splash screen and it gives you the option to press 'menu' and boot into recovery.

Power off your phone and hold m + power. Scroll down to bp tools using the volume down key and select it with the volume up key.
If that doesn't work you're going to need to SBF your phone back to bone stock 5.6.890..
Edit - my bad didn't read all the posts

There's a lot of info here, but I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it. A lot of posts assume that you already know the lingo and basic tasks or modding an android device, and when you are brand new like myself it can be hard to understand a post if you don't know all of the terminology.

ROM Manager just does not work.
................... So mad anybody buys this program it installs Clockwork Boot Partition but IT DOES NOT ALLOW TO UNINSTALL !!!! This is like a virus.
To make matter worse the program just does not work.
Download any RON from ROM Manager it boots to Clockwork Recovery "the virus" and just sits the with the clockwork Android/exclamation.
Clockwork does not answer emails.
Their Forum is full of people that like me are kind of nobbish and very mad that you can not restore the normal android partition.
Two questions anybody have any clue why the program does not work for me?
Failing that how to uninstall revert back to normal Nexus One configuration?
I seen somewhere where somebody says you download a file.
Run some commands from somewhere??? not sure where. I think if you find the the Android ADK you can connect you Nexus One to a computer, turn on some sort of terminal emulator "how?", type these commands from a promote in this emulator. THEY SAY THIS IS EASY ???
You know I live in Toronto I would pay somebody to revert my N1 to stock and not go through the hassle.
All this rooting stuff maybe nice, Titanium Back up, Shoot me, "Cool ROMs which I can not install with ROM Manager" but the education curve is not worth it in my book.
Did you click "flash clockwork recovery" at the top of the program?

Did you flash anything? Or just root and install Rom Manager?
Here are the steps......
Made sure I was rooted, ran a few apps that require root permissions.
Ran ROM Manager,
Flashed the latest Clockmod Recovery
Select Download ROM
Selected CyanogenMod 6.0.0 "I know it work well at least they say so here"
First time select backup current ROM, I did not go for a wipe, selected Google Apps addon.
Watched and it seemed to back up,
Rebooted but.... everything looked the same.
About phone, looked at Andriod Version 2.2 Baseband , kernal Build FRF91
see CyanogenMod nowhere.
Sucker for punishment opened ROM Manager and it asked me if I wanted to report an error "cancel" tried to install CyanogenMod again, it went staright to Andriod Guy/Exclaimation, hit up volume/power, rebooted.
Now whenever I try again I get Andriod guy/exclamation.
I think if I hit "fix permisions in ROM Manager", Flashed CLockwork recovery again .... I can go back to the first step above.
Have you downloaded a rom off of xda and attempted to flash it through recovery?
You can download ROMs from ROM Manager.
I downloaded them from ROM Manager.
Is Rom manager listed under the allowed list under the superuser apps? And it doesn't seem like clockwork is properly loaded on the system, otherwise you would not see the android/with exclamation mark when you boot into recovery. You would see that the latest clockwork recovery is listed twice on the top of the phone. If you have both lines there, that means you have the latest recovery. If you are still having problems with the latest clockwork recovery to install, have you tried the earlier versions to see if they properly install on the phone?
From my experiences, you need to indeed wipe and install gapps to properly install any rom. Then use titanium backup to restore your apps and settings. Looks like you are already backed up/nandroid before doing so.
Wipe first. My fault I didnt see that you ddint wipe

I know most people say when you download ROMs you need to wipe.
I know with Android this should not be a big deal, enter your Google info, the market downloads everything you paid for and then set up exchange mail again but it does take me a few hours to go through the steps and I been lazy.
Try a wipe......
No one said rooting would be easy lol. Customizing one's possesion, let it be a car to a phone is no real small feat. Like anything, you can go into detail as much as you want or not depending on why type of Rom you choose and like. For CM6, that ROM is excellent for customizing pretty much everything on your phone, but it does take some time to get it to your liking.
If you like a "kitchen sink" ROM, have you looked at eVilD's Sense ROMs? Well thats if you like the Sense UI's really, which I do not mind, but everything is thrown in there lol. BUT CM6 is a great launching pad for a novice, like I still am.
I've had no problems with Rom Manager. which clockwork did you install? the beta or stable one? Cause i know when i was doing mine it asked me.
I did the following steps
1. Root
2. Installed Rom Manager and backed up
3. Downloaded Rom of my choice
4. Full wipe and installed rom (via rom manager)
The OP just didn't root, of course.
If the education curve isn't worth it - just uninstall the application. Because you didn't install anything besides the application - because you have no root privileges - because you didn't root. And since you state that you don't want to learn - then why did you start messing with it in the first place?
The only thing that I don't like about ROM Manager is that it creates a lot of people like the OP - starting to mess with something without any wish for understanding, how it works, screwing things up (or not), and start complaining. You did what you did, you didn't bother learning, so why exactly are you complaining?!
Well I will ignore Jack_r1 who is a troll.
"All boards have them ..... sigh"
For the people that were much more friendly and helpful,
Ok next time I try it I will do a full wipe.
Full wipe won't help you. Installing a root-only program without rooting the phone and expecting it to work wouldn't care if you wipe or not.
Guess you really have no clue...

Calling me a troll won't help you either, and won't make you less infant. Especially for anyone who did bother reading my sig and my posts.

I didn't bother reading his next post, where he said he had root. My mistake.
I believe he had the recovery installed initially (otherwise he wouldn't see it backing up), but the first reboot to stock ROM removed it. After that, he wasn't able to do anything, being booted to stock Android recovery. And came here to complain. I guess a difference between running a program and rebooting from different partition aren't common sense to understand? Should be a prerequisite list before rooting.
The correct way would be, of course, to reflash the recovery through ROM manager again, but for people who don't understand the concept of dual-booting and think they run an application - that's not obvious (and it's one of the reasons I think ROM Manager is bad, and manual installation is good). And the better way would be to read the guides and flash the recovery manually. And while going any of those ways, whining on internet boards instead of asking questions would be the most unwelcome way.
I use ROM Manager because I'm a lazy bastard and it has worked flawlessly for me. I have literally flashed over 50 ROMs (mostly CM nightlies) and it has yet to fail me.
But people that have no clue what they're doing shouldn't be using a program like this and I'm pretty sure it comes with a disclaimer of sorts? Although I've barely flashed anything manually I did read up on the processes before going the custom ROMs route, it just seemed obvious.
Me too - lazy bastard, that is...
However, there was an issue with one of the ROM Manager updates a while back, where backups wouldn't restore. That's when a bit of manual knowledge came in handy...

I just installed the FRG83D update on my Nexus One and rerooted using Rageagainstthecage. Everything's fine, except Clockworkmod recovery is replaced by the stock recovery every time I power down. I can get into Clockworkmod by installing it and booting directly to it, but it only works until I power cycle.
I read the thread about hot installing and permanently installing the recovery on the Evo. I assume there is a similar method for the Nexus, but I haven't been able to find any reference to it. Can someone point it out?
I'm trying to install 2.5.1.4, but the same thing happened with 2.5.1.0.
Thanks!

I assume the documentation you used to install your recovery wasn't complete. You have to remove two files from the stock ROM or it automatically reinstalls the stock recovery. You might re-read the instructions, you probably skipped or overlooked that part.

I do know how to read documentation. Neither the documentation at Cyanogenmod nor at xda-developers mention deleting files to make the recovery installation permanent. ROM Manager, which claims to automate the full process, also doesn't make that change. The Google search I did for "ClockworkMod install recovery permanent nexus" came up with nothing, and when I added either "delete" or "remove" to the search terms after reading your response, I got links to instructions for removing ClockworkMod and returning to stock recovery.
I vaguely remember having to delete some files when I rooted my G1 back in the spring, but not the first time I rooted the Nexus when I installed FRG83. I can't find any reference to that now.
If you could provide the names of the files to be removed, or (even better) a link to a thread that documents this part of the process, it would be helpful to me and anyone else who happens across this thread. Saying "I know the answer and you should have found it too" isn't particularly helpful.
If the answer to my question is obvious, I apologize in advance for being both obnoxious and dense. I spent an hour on the phone two nights ago with Verizon tech support on an unrelated issue, so I'm a little prickly at the moment about tech support people who start every call assuming the customer is an idiot.

Hello Guys,
I’m a Sprint HTC Hero owner who is trying to get CM 6.1
My device has the latest OTA update 2.32.651.2
I went ahead and tried z4root which has 2 options, temporary and permanent. Went ahead and did temporary and it stated that it was rooted. Superuser shows up in my apps, so I went ahead and installed ROM manager as a youtube video said (gave a full successful walkthrough)…I open ROM Manager up and it says – You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at “/system/bin/su” or “/system/xbin/su”.
Now using Astro File Manager, I checked those directories and it wasn’t there as ROM Manager stated, but in my SD Card, I see su-2.3.1-bin-signed…
Now my question is, should I try it with permenant root?
If not, what is the recommended next step?
Should I delete/uninstall everything I have that’s related to my previous root attempt and do the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
I’m an Accounting major and a noob at this stuff…and I see people helping each other out here which is awesome, but I get confused trying to keep up with some posts where people are sent to other posts and so forth :/
Thank u in advance! Happy Holidays!
-------------------------------------------
Below is the process on a step by step basis from which i was able to complete it with the help of skndeep102. Thanks again buddy!
-Download z4root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
-Install and run app, press on Permenant Root
-Let it run until it says it has completed
-Once it has completed you will see the Superuser app in your drawer
-Download Rom Manager from the Market
-Open Rom Manager and press on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery at the top (give it a bit as it has to download it and then install)
I had already downloaded the CM 6.1 rom and had it on the SD card
-So i went ahead and hit reboot to recovery in ROM Manager
-Once it is in recovery, go ahead and scroll down to Nandroid and do a backup
-once you do a back up press back and reboot
-Once it starts up again head over to ROM Manager and select Install ROM from SD Card
-Look for the Rom, select it, and it asks you to Wipe Device and Cache, select both
-It reboots to recovery, select the rom and install
I hope i didnt miss a step, but thats pretty much it if i remember it correctly (spent much more time reading than actually doing, lol) Also, if there is something that isnt touched upon here just go ahead and read through as several questions were asked and answered along the way.
Hope it helps!
* Process confirmed to still be working as of 1/5/2011

i am in the same position...the recommendation to me was to RUU to an older version and then root. I am not sure how to do that, so im hoping someone has another solution.
I personally dont trust those one click root options. Manual root requires a little more reading but I have never had an issue that way.
You can always try the permanent option. I dont see why you wouldnt want permanent anyway. If you use the temporary, its gonna unroot you when you reset your phone.

RUU back to an older version just requires that you have the htc drivers installed and the ruu exe. You just double click the ruu exe and follow the instructions.

Wait and see at this point, i guess...
OK so I did the permenant root...and appearantly it worked since z4root is telling me it is and it now gives me the option to re-root and undo root...Also, when I open Rom Manager, it isn't telling me to root the phone...
However, I saw in another forum that a way to check if it is rooted is to download a terminal emulator and type in "su" after the $ ...When i do that it tells me permission denied....
What next?

Where do I get this?
Just a heads up, it seems the root works, the su file is in bin and i tested out drocap2 screencapture app and gave it superuser permission. Worked perfectly...now if i could know where to get ClockworkMod Recovery as the Rom Manager I got from the market did not bring it :/
Use the "un-option" and try another method. I installed a stock ruu on my phone this morning to update my prl and tried the same app. It doesn't flash everything you need like the "flash_image" file. You need that to flash a recovery. I just re-rooted my phone the same way I did back in July. Take note that I am with cellular south and all I had to do is run a batch file and oila, there I am sitting in recovery. If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment UniversalAndroot.apk .
Instructions:
Open app and root
Download Rom Manager(which you have) and flash cm recovery.
I still think it probably won't work, but you can try anyway. I think these "rooting apps" only do enough so you can use apps like "AddFree"(or whatever it is) and others like it.
EDIT: In Rom Manager, the very first tab(up at the top) should say"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". Press that one. It would ever flash for me until I went back to me nandroid.

If you want to try another "root via app" method, you can try this-->View attachment 465856 .

I see what you mean...Can anyone else pitch in on the aprt in regards to the rooting apps only doing enough for rooted apps use?
I read in another forum that I could just get the apk for ClockworkMod Recovery, install it, and then Head Over to ROM Manager and continue the process? any truth to that?

quick question, performance difference between stock 2.1 and lets say most roms out there a huge difference?
anyone else care to throw some input into my situation?
Happy Holidays btw...
Just a heads up, what worked for me, once I was rooted and downloaded ROM Manager I had to install Superuser.apk, then when I tried to flash clockwork recovery I got the Superuser dialog box asking for permission, then select allow. another awesome program to help is Android Commander that you install on your PC and it provides a gui adb access but you have to have sdk and adb installed on your pc, but if you look around there is info about it available. hope this helps, wish i had more time but i was just home on my lunchbreak, good luck
I have a verizon wireless droid 3..
I think the verizon part matters right? lol anyways, i just rooted m phone tonight and ive downloaded root explorer, root uninstaller, rom manager, and ti backup. id really like to "flash"(is that proper?) a new rom onto my phone. I understand one of the major options is steeldroid. /what else do i need to download to my pohne to get this rom? Im a complete noob when it comes to android. Period. I came from the sheltered world of blackberries.
I read a thread on another site which was a walkthrough and gave links, but the bootstrap link asks me question i dont have answers to. Help? :/ i download stuff to my computer?
a lot of explanations and links are in the 1st post from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278056
under "Flashing instructions:"
Just get a bootloader so you can get Clockwork installed and you can install the ROM from there. Just read up about it.

bootloader? Is our bootloader unlocked?? we have a hijack bootstrap and 2nd-init but yes I would suggest grabbing hashcodes modified version of koush's clockworkmod and installing flashing from there.
how do i openn the .rar file that rsdlite is in?
Do i have to do the beginning steps if my phone is already rooted?
I know u just wanna flash it, but u should def do some reading. Using rsd u can really mess ur phone up! Make sure ur settings/about/system are 5.6.890 and install clockwork first. Then boot into clockwork and u can flash. Only use rsd if ur bricked and its last resort!
Edit: after re-reading, I highly suggest u read the original posts in the rom u want to flash. Make sure its in the droid 3 forum. No offense, but if ur unfamiliar with rar and zip, this may b a little too much

i agree w/ ya......with some roms they suggest using safestrap instead of just koushs modded bootstrap which may/may-not be the same as safestrap and if you use the wrong thing, you may chance bootlooping your phone or worse, so yeah......if he gave specific instructions, your best bet is to follow those for simplicity so that if you have issues you can just confirm using all the steps he listed unless you're an advanced modder and you know what you're doing
and to extract rar files, http://www.rarlab.com is the app you need
thanks for the help guys seriously.
i AM on 5.6.890, and im very familiar with .zip files just not .rar. didnt realize you had to use an outside program to open .rar
isnt clockworkmod the rom manager i downloaded?
i guess im looking for a "How to for dummies" of sorts. i know that i will be able to do this, i just want to do it right. Id hate to brick a phone I just got.
Clockwork is different from rom manager. I think steel droid just released a version u can use with safestrap, but read up on the safestrap and SD threads first! I jacked around with safestrap and bootlooped and rsd'd and bootlooped and now im back. Once u install clockwork mod, create a backup! Then, put the rom on ur sd card and select install zip from sd card. Don't use rsd unless ur really really messed up

Okay so I download clockwork and safestrap(install to phone or computer? Links?) And after I do that create a backup, install the new ROM on my sd and open clockwork. And select install from sd...?
Droooooiiid.. the sound forever in our hearts and nightmares <3
Alright, call me mean, but if u can't figure out these next instructions, I can't help u. What's going to happen is ull screw up and then fret because u don't know how to rsd. Its very easy to bootloop!
search the forum for hashcodes tweaked bootstrapper (which is clockwork). I would stay away from the safestrap if I were u. U download this to ur phone, and install it like an .exe. once installed, hit bootstrap recovery, then when u hit reboot recovery, it will reboot into clockwork. Once in clockwork select backup and it will make a nandroid (exact copy). After that u can choose to install the roms zip from sd card. Once its finished, I highly suggest u use the wipe data/cache in clockwork. That will reset all ur data and become a new-out-of-box phone. If u bootloop, then u use rsd.
Be aware that u can brick ur phone. I've saw a few with low batteries get stuck! We all try to help here, but I think the best for u is to read instead of doing. We will try to help if u bootloop, but sometimes there is no fixing.

yeah, safestrap isn't compatable w/ all roms at the moment, and like mrjudy said, low battery can affect rom flashing...suggested is >75% battery life
To add to MrJudylicious post...
I came from a blackberry too, before I got my first Android 2 years ago.
Here's what you should do. First, Familiarize yourself with the Android ecosystem. Flashing ROMs on a brand new phone is tempting, but at the same time, you have no mental reference of how Android was before you flashed that ROM, so it's hard for you to compare and see what's best for you, and what's not. What new feature you was added, what has been improved over your last ROM, etc...
I used Android for 6 months before rooting for the first time, just to give myself some time to learn what's nice about it, and also what I would like for it to achieve, that it can't do without root.
I flashed my first ROM 1 year after that, and this was a great time. Why ? Because I saw how cool things became, I was able to compare the ROM with my "stock android" experience.
I read all your posts in this thread, and you make me feel like you might not be ready to jump in feet first in this. All the ROMS for the Droid3 are in very early stage of development and, if I would be you, would wait for them to become more stable and reliable. I'm not saying that they should not be used at all, just saying that it might not be the best idea for you yo do this RIGHT NOW.
Please do yourself a favor, and keep your phone as it is right now. Root is OK, but be careful.

perfection if i've ever seen it i was in a similar situation, i had a rooted phone and there were next to no roms for the first android phone i got, so when i got my incredible 2 the first thing i did was root it since it was essentially the same exact FW and layout, and i've been mod-happy ever since lol
thanks guys, you've been a massive help forreal. Maybe an idea for you guys to make the learning process better for n00bs such as myself, is to make a thread and discuss some of the terms, acronyms, file names exes apks bak and such. And sticky that thread so when you do your best to try and help someone they can better understand you guys.
Just an idea though. I think ill just wait to flash ROMs and whatnot.

Sorry I used the wrong term. I meant bootstrap not bootloader.

i have a bionic and stupid me let my grandson get his hands on it. he installed safestrap and eclipse 2.2, as he said that was a better o/s. he said with safestrap you can just reboot back to the original. i found a few things i didn't like and told him to put it back to original which he had a problem doing so i reinstalled the eclipse.
i started to read how to do it and disabled safestrap and tried to get back to original o/s. when it completes it gets stuck at the droid screen.
i read a thread in the dev. forum and it gave a link to getting back to stock and there are a couple spots i get stuck on.
it says to use rsd lite, get the drivers, and use the motofail tool. i understand the procedure for rsd lite and how to install the fmz zip. where i get confused is where and how to i install the drivers to the phone and how to use the motofail program. also, would i have to disable safestrap to start?
any help would be appreciated.
I can walk you through it. Do you use google talk on your pc?

no i don't use that program. i cant stay on computer at this time but i do appreciate the offer. if the steps were written i could follow them and i usually make out well. its just that the post i read says get the drivers and use the motofail but they dont tell you how to do that part, they only tell you how to use the rsd lite with the o/s file
Since you dont have time, use this... http://androidforums.com/bionic-all-things-root/480176-how-flash-5-5-893-5-9-902-rsdlite.html
I was going to try and help restore your stock system thru safestrap.
This will wipe root and safestrap.
The drivers go on your pc and motofail is used to root.
thanks for the info. cleared up the questions i had (as far as i can tell). appreciate your help.

everything went perfect. phone is back to stock. learned 2 things. first is not to let my grandson touch my phone and second how to fix it. should have learned the first one when he bricked my samsung tablet.
just one other question. can you explain the purpose of rooting a phone and is it worth doing?
again thanks for your help.
From addictivetips.com " Android is based on Linux and comes locked with only standard user access given to its user. Root access – also known as Superuser access – is the access level on Linux-based devices that lets their users perform administrative tasks including updating the system, installing applications at the core level without using the standard ‘.apk’ installation files, accessing the system partition, modifying protected system files and changing their permissions etc."
You will be able to delete or freeze verizon bloatware. Flash custom ROMs. Edit certain files within your system. And more...
Disclaimer: It can void your warranty.
You can customize more of your phone when you root. Custom boot animations and custom task bar are just 2 examples.
You can also backup your system and any apps that you buy. I highly recommend backing up any app you buy.
