Alright.
Seriously, whats the deal with the Rogers Dream and the normal Dream? I dont get the difference. Please explain some in detail.
The only thing I've been reading for a while is the DRE2100 or something compared to the normal thing.
seriously. What is rooting?
I have a Rogers Dream and I really want to know where to start playing around with it.
Its sad however that I have to look for threads with "Rogers" tagged on it.
previously, I had an HTC Kaiser, and I played around/flashed it a LOT. and I moved on to a Rogers Dream, I've had it for quite a while, just didn't know where to start.
Thanks
Theres a few minor differences between the 2. The main one is the frequency it runs on. But to get you started understanding everything this is what you need to look at.

Alright. I am so. tired of looking up stuff. I'm not going to do anything yet.
I barely get anything.
What is root for?
what is it used for?
I have used Ubuntu and Fedora a couple of times but, seriously, root was just a command really.
After I root. then what?
Also. I was wondering. can Rogers ever be converted into the DREAM100/DREAM110?. i dont know, just wondering. If that was possible, It would make things very simple for people like me.
I believe that dream100/110 are boards so they could never be converted.
Root is basicly in windows terms- the admin, getting root allows you su like the sudo command in linux. Having root allows you to flash custom roms, nandroid backup, themes, allow deeper hardware access, full privs to the kernel processes of the system, allowing apps to sd, allow you to wipe or activate gps from sms, dentonate nuclear warheads, so on and so on
Have I answer the ? Sufficently enough yet
Oh and root on linux is the same thing and not just a command

Since you're a lazy noob (at least to the G1), check the link in my sig that will answer most of your preliminary questions. Also look in the development forum's stickies, as there is A LOT of information for noobs about rooting (how to do it, and what it's good for, etc.) and flashing SPL, Recovery, and ROMs.
^That noob thread should be stickied. lol
So now, I am following instructions.
and I am a bit confused.
I am right now setting up my pc for rooting
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html
It says
Setting up a Device for Development said:
Step 1.) Declare your application as "debuggable" in your Android Manifest.
In Eclipse, you can do this from the Application tab when viewing the Manifest (on the right side, set Debuggable to true). Otherwise, in the AndroidManifest.xml file, add android:debuggable="true" to the <application> element.
Click to collapse
What exactly does this mean?
Which application.
I have learned that AndroidManifest.xml is used for every application
I have the AndroidSDK on my computer, and I have also installed the usb driver
And when I searched in there, boy I got lots of results for "AndroidManifest.xml"
A little help?
Thanks a lot.
EDIT-
See, while here, I just had a simple question

I can access it from the phone btw
Follow the simple root link in my signature. Takes you to a thread specific to root on a Roger's dream along with a crowd of other canucks executing the same procedure.
A 1gig swap, way way overkill and completely useless to have anywhere near that much
I ordered me a Captivate and it's shipped from MD and should be here Thursday, but in the mean time, I'm doing research on what to do and how to do it.
I found the one click root..Does it work for the newest Captivates??
Lag Fix?? What is it and how do I fix it?
Roms..I'm coming from a G1..Is flashing a rom on the Captivate anything like the G1??
Will the upgrade from a G1 to a Captivate be very noticeable???LOL
Thanks folks
~SMurf
Step 1 : replace touchUI with launcher pro.
Step 2 : wait for the froyo rom to be released.
The lag fixes give you a slight improvment but don't give you much of a real world performance increase, i'd just wait until froyo gets released in a couple weeks.
Agree, it works fine with stock rom and launcher pro. So happy after using those crappy wm devices

Is there a date or estimate for froyo??
Another thing that you might want to do is install SuperRooterExtreme. It roots the phone & installs lag fix & enables side loading & a bunch more all at once. I put it on my wifes & my phone with great results. Vastly improved performance. My quadrant score went from 900 something to over 2000. I also have a G1 and the captivate rules over it.

Samsung expects the gps fix at the end of spetember and i think they said froyo by that time also...or was it an update at that time? I'm positive about the gps thing but not the froyo.

You'll get different answers. There are people who say theirs works find. But I'm in the camp that believes all are bad, and that you just need to be in the right circumstances to experience the problem.
But I can't imagine that it won't be fixed.

Got a link for that?? Is it in the market??
I appreciate the help, and seeing as the Captivate does have it's issues, I'm hoping it's gonna be a good phone..lol
I'm coming from a G1/TP2 and was excited to only pay $10 for mine..Yes I had to sign a new 2 year contract but hey..I got the money..lol
In reference to the Captivates UI and replacing it with LauncherPro, would GDE work just as good?? I do like LauncherPro but I find GDE to be more visually pleasing.
Thanks for teh info.

SRE is available in the Captivate Android Development section of these forums. Just make sure you read read read everything first so you don't freak out if you run into problems lol. These phones are hard to brick so flash away. ADW Launcher is another homescreen replacement that has FREE themes you can download and use and its easily found when you search the market. Grab Rom Manager and Titanium Backup as well and you should be ready to go nuts after you root. Some of the downloads in the development section root the phone for you while they also install lag fixes etc. but I'd wait to see how you like the phone before you bother with a lag fix or GPS fix. My GPS is fine but I did use a lag fix because the phone drove me nuts after being used to a tweaked Nexus One for a few months.

What about sideloading? I did the adb commands all the way thru correctly but it want let me install apps. Do I have to go thru adb with the install command?

i'm in the same boat as the OP and i'm wondering when you upgrade the firmware to 2.2, will you lose all the stuff you've done to the phone (like the mods and stuff)?
OK folks...Having an issue.
I rooted my phone, and I'm trying to get side loading to work...or some sort of app installing thing to work. I tried to flash clockwork but apparently it didn't work(hit with an error after reoping the app) and for some reason Superuser app keeps crashing and none of my apps and get root...Did I unroot it??
I tried to use the "Unleash The Beast" update.zip and thats when everything starting going bonkers..Can I go to stock and start over??
Yes you can flash back to stock with the Odin One Click Downloader...then I'd run one of the update.zips that roots and installs other tools like Busybox etc., just take your time and read the instructions before you try anything new. There are 2 versions of Odin so make sure you have the one from the One Click Downloader post (the other is for flashing roms and kernals, not restoring to stock), and install the android sdk and learn some basic adb commands ( adb reboot recovery, adb reboot download, makes life so much easier). With a little time you'll get the hang of it...just watch out for driver issues and make sure you follow the instructions and you really can't brick the phone. Odin is your friend and you need it anyways to flash back to stock before you try some of the new fixes, mods etc. GL, I won't be around much now as I am forced to sell my phone due to being unemployed but I'm already scheming to get a new one from Amazon for a penny lol.
EDIT: I read the post for Unleash the beast and it says its ok if your already rooted so I don't think that was the problem. Your best bet is to get to a PC or laptop and use Odin to flash back to stock (once your in download mode and the phone is recognized, it really is one click lol) then run Unleash the beast again. If you can't get su to work in the terminal app then you don"t have root, but you do have superuser permissons installed so I'm kinda at a loss. Might as well get used to flashing back to stock anyways if you like to hack and try new things lol I used Odin at least 20 times over the course of a few days!
after reading your edit post, I'm much happier..LOL
I'm fine with reflashing to stock as long as Titanium does my back ups. I was gonna reflash tonight and do as suggested. I'm also fine with Adb. I'm coming from a G1 and Adb is very familiar to me..LOL
Thanks for the info and help and you'll prolly get a Pm from me if I'm stuck..LOL
Sent from my Captivate to the best site in the world.
I spent hours per day for weeks reading through this and other forums I advise you to read read read and read some more before you do anything to it that way you will understand everything a bit better and remember.
for every action there is a reaction
After I found out I was getting one,I searched and read and read some more. I'm comfortable with Adb and the terminal, and after reading about the not so easy to brickness,I'm sorta happier..LOL
I do have an issue tho with Clockwork. After I installed rom manager, I flashed the recovery and rebooted. It booted into clockwork but I didn't know what else to do. I flashed my G1 on almost a daily basis and understand the update.zip files...but where do I get it? I did my backup and its still on my SD card but I'm still using the stock recovery. Do I flash my backup?
I've got my phone just about how I want it and all I'm waiting for are the Rome and 2.2 along with everyone else..lol
Thanks for the help.

alright... i was planning on getting my captivate today cuz ive been dying to get a new phone! coming from a tilt 2, flashed with a ROM from NRG, and running froyo (although it still feels very sluggish lol). i was gonna use my wife's upgrade but isn't eligible till sept 9!! if it were me i would pay the extra $75 on top of the 2 yr renewal but it is her upgrade =p. my question is similar to the OP. but i have a mac and im sure rooting and such is different. ive read in different forums and read read read and still feel uncertain.... ive also watched youtube vids on rooting but still not sure what is the most reliable program... any suggestions or possibly provide the one YOU used to root ur captivate? after rooting are there any other apps you need to dl? not talking about gps fix and all cuz i can wait on that. after rooting, when froyo comes along, will you need to re-root? will u lose everything if you update? before my tilt 2 i had iphone 2g and was very familiar with jailbreaking and all. so i have experience on flashing and jailbreaking and hoping rooting will be as easy =). thank you all for helping one another! keep up the great work!

Since your gonna be on a stock Captivate, you can just use the Unleash the Beast method. Its in the android dev section. Download of and rename it to update.zip and boot into recovery, and install the update. Then you'll be rooted and have the ability to sideload. After you do it, go to terminal and type such..then sideloading..or sideloader..its in the post, and you'll be good to go. Works for me...lol
I'm still trying to get clockwork to work..lol. If you flash Clockwork and can boot into it via the volume+power buttons, please pm me..lol

EDIT: i was reading that thread and seems ppl are having issues with wifi tethering. is urs working fine?
I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
At the start DEFINITE GUIDE TO BRICKING, LOL.
Its just a joke be sure you read it all.

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062
thanks for clarying.
just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.
Let me say I had an EVO and used Unrevoked to root it and all I did was use that for wifi.
So now I have an unrooted Nexus. I am in a position that I want some of the custom things but have not rooted and a lot of this technical stuff floors me at this point and I do not want to brick my phone.
Can anyone tell me what it means to install via recovery, how to do a backup and what deoxxed (I know it is spelled wrong) is?
I want to put a custom home screen, I like the blue market I see and I like the clear MMS that is posted, but the install instructions just confuses me.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I really am wanting to customize my Nexus 4G.

Read that and try to get rooted first. Then if you need more help after that feel free to shoot me a PM and ill try to help you more. Read different threads as well, just search XDA for root NS4G. I went through the exact same thing. If you start reading more threads it will start coming to you. When you root, you need the drivers (adb and fastboot) installed on your computer, they come with either pdanet or sdk which you can find the download links to with a quick search of the forums. Find the stickied section of NS4G dev section and those should have all the files you need. Cwm is Clockwork Mod Recovery. It is flashed after unlocking the bootloader using a command prompt. After rooting and flashing cwm, you boot into recovery(cwm) and follow the instructions from a root guide to flash your new rom. I think BuglessPete has a great tutorial on root and flashing a rom. Find that and you're good to go. Don't get discouraged. It is NOT as hard or complicated as it seems. You will be surprised at how simple these guys have made it for us newcomers. Make sure you give them a thanks.

So it was a day from you know what. I got rooted first this morning, I did the first update that I wanted which was the blue market, epic fail. I spent the whole day trying to get my market to work again, no go. I had not backed up (stupid me) and when put that new market in it was a FC galore. I tried downloading other market apk's including the market that is due to be released and none would install. I ended up flashing the phone with Oxygen ROM. Now I have to get the phone back to the way I like it, lots of apps to download (not sure why they did not restore since I am set to back up/restore from google servers) and go from there.
I will be doing more I am sure, lots of reading to do. Thanks to the two of you.
Ok, so, first off, yes, as I keep being told by the forums I read, I am a noob. I understand, and respect that. That's not the issue.
So, I have followed the guide that's found here, and I have the Clockwork mod installed, as when I turn on my phone, and press down, it says I have it.
I -had- my phone rooted in the past, and then -finally- the official 4.0.4 update came out. I upgraded from my old rooted image to the new image, and figured I'd wait to see if someone would post instructions on how to update this version, unless I am doing something wrong.
I am sure that I am, or I missed something somewhere. Again, I have -no- idea what I am talking about. I don't claim I do.
So... I try to install Superuser-3.2-RC2 -and- RC3-ARM-signed.zip, as I was advised that may work via pressing power+down, I get this:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed!
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I copied the file over to the root of the SD card, and all that jazz.
So, is someone ready to point out the error in my method, or more likely, tell me I am an idiot?

First time I hear of a Captivate Glide!? I *guess* they use the same firmware.
I'm not sure if superoneclick works for ICS but you could look into that.
EDIT: Look below.
I don't really want to give you any advice because I've never used the captivate glide and I would advise against using any software in this forum. There is a forum for the glide though which would probably be the best place to get your answer. I would link you to it but I'm on my phone at the moment.
The phones are similar but still different enough that rooting methods and custom kernels probably won't work the same.

Ah good point, though it was only a deviation of the captivate.

True but the fact that it has a slide out keyboard concerns me. Any software not made for it would probably render the keyboard unusable.

See, things like that is why I posted to start with... I know I am a noob, and I think I ran into a unique situation, so, that's why I posted... I would of just used good 'ol Google, but, I really just prefer to keep it on here... seeing as the guide here is well done, and I think I could trust it.
..that, and I am a bit afraid of some answers I may get elsewhere.
Anywho, any ideas how to get SU to work around this? I remember reading somewhere that there's an option to allow un-signed roms to load.. is that doable here, or better yet, advisable? I.E., might brick something? I love this phone, after all. Just... hate the bloatware that made it's return. x.x

There is, the thing is that it'S different from phone to phone so you'll only get a real answer over on the Glide side :/

I followed the instructions from that guide to root the phone, that's where I get that error. It won't accept an un-signed ROM.
..and, I was gonna post on the forum posts that would help with this more directly, but, this is my 3rd post; not allowed to pose in Dev forums yet.

UPDATE:
Someone earlier suggested I run Super One Click, I think... well, I run it, and I tell it to 'Root' It says 'Missing driver! Install?' I click 'Yes' A pop up comes up, 'No more data' then another, and I click yes, same thing. Just tossing that in there...

Hold it, hold it, slow down.
First of all, the Captivate and Captivate Glide have nothing in common besides their name. Different SoC, different NAND, different screen, different board layout. NOTHING is interoperable between them short of, well, flashing tools like Odin.
The Glide has its own section. Come join us, we're fun people and we just got CM10.1 a few weeks ago!
-E- Also, for the Glide you install ClockworkMod first, THEN root. That's just SOP for devices that ship with the bootloader already unlocked.
same problem
Im having the same problem with error codes when i try to use superuser
Has anyone found a solution?
I have the at&t model and factory unlocked if it helps

If you have a Glide, you're in the wrong section.
If you have a Captivate though, be more clear about your issue. What error do you get? What steps did you take? Followed any guide?
