I'm looking for the best app to send free sms messages over wifi (without a phone plan). If it matters, I'm in Canada. Any good apps for this?
Kik Messenger
why not using WhatsApp?
Do those apps provide sms texting to phones without that app installed, or is it just a messenger? I'm looking for one for sms texting to all phones.
Google Voice app for SMS
and
GrooVeIP for free calls
Cheers!

Google voice is a safe bet
free SMS to US and Canada. And since it's written by google I would trust it more than a random "free SMS" app on the market that might spy on you and/or drain the battery.
It also gives you a phone number so that you can receive SMS.
The only downside is that you will need to use a US proxy to register since it's not officially available in Canada.
HeyWire
I use this app before until they decided to limit the supported countries and Philippines is not one of them.
Lucky you, Canada is supported, you'll have a real US number that others can reply to.

I looked into this, but even if I use a proxy to sign up, it will give me a US phone number. Doesn't that mean people will be charged for international texting if I use this number to text people in Canada?

Same question as above. Won't a US number mean international texting charges will apply if I were to use that app to text people from Canada?
Anyone...?

Hi,
I need some help from UK citezens in getting a mobile phone contract in UK
I am going to Enland the next month.. with my brother..
I will stay for six months.. and my brother will stay for a long time (5 years minimum)..
I am wondering what is the perfect deal for me and for my brother.. we want to get a sim as soon as possible so it's better to know which and how from now...
I know i can surf some networks sites but i know that your opinions are much better and more helping..
Best Regards,
Hi,
If you do not have a bank account for address proof, getting a contract phone is next to impossible.
Regarding networks, I would recommend you to take O2. Its the only GSM network where you can call most of non-geographic numbers like (0870/0845 etc) in your bundled/free minutes. Most of the call centres for various products and services are on these 0870/0845 numbers.
Go for Three(3G network) if you want damn cheap tariffs as long as you don't mind patchy network coverage. They have good phones these days and coverage/quality has improved quite significantly.
Go for T-Mobile if you want good customer service and good tariffs.
Vodafone is the worst(my experience) when it comes to customer service but they project that their network is the best(???) but they are expensive when it comes to tariffs.
Regards
Hari
thanks a lot,
I think my brother has arranged some bank account... but for me.. are there pre-paid accounts or something??
dont tell me there's no way to get a temporal mobile phone in England..
thanks again

what about virgin mobile, what do you think of that? do you think i should switch from them, or stay with them? (i think it's 15p flat rate for any call, including 0870/0845 numbers)
this thread has almost completed a decade !!
I'll suggest T-mobile....

Anyone know what this is... strangely enough, I am very reluctant to download software recommended by random text messages.....
i received that same text message...didnt bother downloading because it was from an unknown sender
Also think about this. IF AT&T was offering free software wouldn't they put it on wireless.att.com?
The link redirects (or tries to before timing out) to http://wap2.cingularextras.com.
Trying to go to http://www.cingularextras.com takes you to http://mediamall.wireless.att.com which is pretty much where you'll end up trying to 'Shop' from http://wireless.att.com/home.
You can go into your Account and uncheck all the marketing options. I used to get text messages for promotions and what not and I removed all of them and now I don't get anything.

They certainly wouldn't distribute over a text message from a domain called wappush.net. I'd be more than reluctant to download it. It screams of a virus.

Sure tell everyone the Code. Now scammers know to put att in the first three words. And At&t Really should be smart enough not to use such an unidentifiable website. The should use wappush.att.net or something. I'm still very suspicious of this.
anyone know of any spoof apps that can change ur number for txts or calls ...isaw on one the market a while ago but it was pay per min...dont like that idea wouldnt mind buying an app but to pay by the min could get costly...just looking for an app to use is sound boards to mess with friends..
I don't believe it's possible for an app to do such a thing without using a 3rd party route (in otherwords you will have to pay for it) as caller ID and sms transmission is all controlled on the Network side of things. Even when you hide your number it is still identified to the network you are calling it just hides it on the other end from the call recipients phone.
cool thats what i thought...
I believe the app you are looking for is called 123SPOOF. It is free for a 2min call which i believe is long enough to mess with someone pretty good. When you call you have to listen to a 30 sec Ad then it connects you.
Ive used a few times works great and really freaks people out.

The original app is called "Spoof App" and it ain't that exspensive. Paid $20 for 120 minutes. Its lasted me for months now and still have 60 something minutes. Fun stuff.
any way we can ask the developers to make a WM version or someone make one for WM ?

Are you on ICS? They made some tweaks to the top bar. On gingerbread it still looks the same. The main feature is now when you send a message, you don't get a popup when it sends. It just queues it and sends it when the network is available. And if it fails to send it, it retries without any user action.

For sure- any ICS should work fine. It could look a little diff if you have a theme, buy should be OK.
Unless you're on Gingerbread.. still working on that. (Maybe)

I don't believe so.. They're only giving out US numbers now. but, you should still be able to make calls in Gmail, at least. But the app won't help you much there.
I imagine they'll expand to Canada soon tho. Try googling around.. there might be some work arounds..
I lost my voice icon after my updating ICS.
Now I updated voice in market and get it back. But I cannot verify my number cause I'm not in US and I can just use talkatone to redirect it to google talk, saddly.

My Question is, WHY both markets are different? I live in Pakistan and I was wondering why we dont get the same one as shown in First Picture?
Is there any way I could get the one shown in First Picture?
Someone gave me an idea that MarketUnlocker is there for this reason. But i have tried playing with it and i was unable to get my desired results.
Anyone have any idea about it?
The one in the first picture is for the states (or places that have Google Music, Video Books). Currently not available in all countries and while you may figure out how to get it it will still be useless as I am sure you will still need a US credit to purchase anything from Google Books for example. Or a US address to have the Galaxy Nexus delivered etc

I thought they would've SOMETHING which is free. Would it hurt if i download some "Free" music or books from Google Play Store? You know what i mean ...
So everything is paid there? And are you saying its impossible for me to get it on my device?

Yes of course it's paid else you could order a free GNex
And also yes it is possible to get it by using a US proxy but I don't see the point in doing so
