Easy Root/ Unroot - Droid Incredible Android Development

USE FROYO RUU TO GO TO STOCK FROYO AND USE UNREVOKED TO ROOT PHONE AGAIN
*I HAVE NOT tried this with an S-ON incredible yet. You can use this to root your device if you want to wipe everything clean and start over, OR you could return to stock and receive the OTA update then stay with stock.*
So for some reason I unrooted my phone and wanted to receive the newest OTA from Verizon to check it out. Well it turns out that I missed rooting. So I had S-OFF on my phone, but the stock android 2.3.4 and sense 1.0 image. To get back to stock froyo and later use unrevoked i did this...
1. Download this... (http://dev-host.org/hhfe0ddz0igb/RU...4k_NV_1.70_PRL58006_release_152016_signed.exe) and save somewhere on your COMPUTER.
2. Plug phone into computer.
3. Run this file on your computer and follow on screen instructions. ***CAUTION: This will erase all data on phone and I would advise you to backup your sd card contents on a folder on your computer!***
4. When it says complete, it will appear that it is in a bootloop, hold on
5. Remove battery and go to hboot (volume down button + power button)
6. Select factory reset and let it do its thing.
7. Once that is over, you will need to activate the device so follow the instructions on your phone.
8. BOOM! now you have a stock froyo, unrooted device.... now what.
9. In case you forgot... download unrevoked (http://unrevoked.com/#inc)
10. Follow these preliminary instructions as well if you are on windows (http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install)
11. Run unrevoked and well congrats..... youre rooted!!! FLASH AWAY!!

Great
I just completed the "downgrade to 2.2 using unrevoked 3.22". This would have been much easier. At least I had a learning opportunity.

Confused, did you have s off or s on when you did this?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium

The reason I ask is if you were already S off all you needed to regain root was to flash su and clockwork recovery thru hboot. If you were S on the downgrade with a ruu would not have worked. Did I miss something on your situation?

I have not tried it using an S-ON phone.. whomever uses this technique can re-root that way or return to stock the same way, receiving the OTA updates shortly after setting it up.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

Ok, so would it be more appropiate to be titled easy root with s off? AFAIK the downgrade method with two versions of unrevoked is the only method to obtain root with 2.3.4 and s on.

I'm confused... the title says S-ON and your post says S-OFF.

[Q] updated HTC hero software OTA and locked up root. help?

updated my HTC hero on sprint to the most recent OTA software update. not firmware, software. it was rooted before but I forgot to unroot before updating. root permissions are now completely jammed/locked up. tried to unroot, no good. tried to re-root, no good. I'm in a state of mid-rootedness. please help. I'm gonna go crazy trying to figure this out myself.

how you do dat? lol sorry I'm kind of a noob to rooting.

That works on the newest hero rom.
I don't know how to run all that stuff. how do you fix it without installing an extra ****-ton of software?
This is why you should read about rooting before you actually root the phone. Run the RUU like suggested, that is the only way you're going to be able to downgrade and root your phone.
Please post in the Q&A section next time when you have a question like this.
Run this:

You don't install it on your phone... You run it inside of Windows, and then follow the instructions.
I did rum it on windows. it just keeps going not making any progress at all.

I can't find the FRG33 to FRG83 update to save my life! The link to google is 404, anyone know where else to get it?

Maybe you should use the recovery for Nexus one....

Your phone is a passion, not a crespo...
Use FRG83 from this link to go from FRG33 to FRG83 (though I'm not sure why you're doing this if you're also trying to fastboot flash a recovery?)

The FRG83 link that goes to google is down and has been for a while. The one that goes to HTC is a full image and does not work with HBOOT 00.35.0017 for whatever reason (after verifying image, it simply goes back to normal hboot screen with no prompt or failure message).
My ultimate goal is to replace the emailgoogle.apk with a modified one. To do that, I need root. So my new goal is to root my phone without unlocking the boot loader. You can't root Gingerbread (actually it's all about HBOOT 00.35.0017) with a locked boot loader at the moment, so my newer goal is to downgrade HBOOT. There currently does not seem to be a viable way to do that.
There was this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726258#7197502
But it both requires root (which I don't have yet) and the links are dead.
There also seems to be no published way to re-lock a boot loader, though I know it has been done.
As silly as it sounds, my reason for not wanting to unlock is the padlock image. I bought a busted phone on ebay and fixed it, so I don't have warranty.
The FRG83 file is a zip within a zip, which is why it isn't working...
The hboot version doesn't make a difference when trying to root. If you are currently on FRG33, you can root using this method:

That did the trick. I PASSIMG.zip'ed back to FRG33 and followed your guide to the letter. I was a little worried since the chmod commands failed, but I ran the rage script anyway and then started over. The second time the chmod commands worked and everything went perfectly. Installed Rom Manager, flashed clockwork, then replaced it with Amon Ra.
Got rooted gingerbread and stuck in my modded emailgoogle.apk for good measure.
EDIT:
For anyone searching for this, I specifically use the 656099b119f8.signed-passion-ota-102588.656099b1.zip update to go from FRG33 to GRI40 gingerbread 2.3.3 and without rebooting applied another update.zip that re-installed superuser. Specifically look for this guide: h t t p://forum.xda-developers. c o m/showthread.php?t=931865 and mostly disregard it except for downloading the su-***-signed.zip and then looking at is post: h t t p://forum.xda-developers. c o m/showpost.php?p=11626567&postcount=70
Of course, you have to have a custom recovery to flash both the gingerbread update and the super user update! And don't forget to mount /system before doing the super user update!

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Original G1 owner need unlocking help

I have the G1 since it came out on T-Mobile. Since then I have moved on to Samsung Vibrant, original Galaxy Tab and currently on the international Galaxy Tab 7.7 as my phone and tab. I would like the xda community help in unlocking my G1 for a backup phone on my current sim. One thing to know, I am no longer using T-Mobile, I am on Straight Talk. I have been looking online to find a way to get it unlocked but all I come up with is, steps to unlock using the unlock code from T-Mobile (again I am no longer with T-Mobile) this is no use to me, or just follow links to websites where you pay for the code (would not trust them).
Is there a way to unlock it without the need of an unlock code? The original Galaxy Tab was able to be unlocked using Terminal Emulator by a member here on xda, would this be possible to do on the G1? Another option that is not good for me is ADB as I have no clue how to use it, I am okay using terminal emulator if given the correct code. I greatly appreciate your help and looking forward to your suggestions.
solved.......
Ok, since i was not getting any info here i decided to go ahead and pay for the unlock code. I used http://www.unlock-htc.com/unlocking-HTC.php, even though i was a bit sceptical, they accept paypal so at least i could fight the charge if any issues came up. Also i was able to root my G1 using this site http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/23/how-to-root-the-htc-g1-dream-androot-method/. So now i have an unlocked and rooted G1. Next up flashing a rom, maybe.
yeah unlike some other phones no one has been able to sim unlock these phones without a code, at least to my knowledge. the only other way I know off for you to have gotten a code for free would be to try and contact htc directly or have some one you know with tmobile get it for you
I have rooted many g1s over time but never used androot, I have heard it works fine

well if you rooted with androot you should be ok, you now need to flash a custom recovery, I suggest amonra (also there is an app in the market that checks for root, I suggest use it to make sure) if you are rooted and have the sdk package on computer proceed
get a terminal emulator from the market as well as superuser and linda file manager, amonra image, put it on the root of sd card and rename it to recovery.img (if on windows it may auto put extention in there so name it just recovery)
open terminal emulator and type
su
then type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
wait a minute or so

there are ways around this but it will be much easier and faster in the future if you have this.
also safer to flash firmware via fastboot as apposed to recovery

find a thread called adb for dummies or something along those lines, it has a mini package in it with all the required programs and files to do minimal work (adb, fastboot, drivers, etc) it also explains how to use these functions (just a quick basic idea anyway)
the sdk package is big if you download everything, and unless you start learning to develop roms and or apps most of it will seem usless to you
your other option is to just root the phone the old fasioned way, following the cyanogen wiki completley starting with the downgrading with the dreaming.nbh file
I've used this method o so many times, the first time took me manybe half an hour because I had to read up on it and understand it. now when I root a g1 I'm done in about 10 mins with rooting, upgrading to the latest radio/spl and installing a custom rom and recovery. so in other words it isn't too hard or time consumming and you may have less issues

So I followed cyanogen wiki and did the following:
Downgraded to RC29
Installed Amon_Ras latest recovery image
Upgraded radio to 2.22.23. 02
Spl 1.33.2005
Then I tried to install cm 5.0.8 (the links for cm 6 are not working) it flashed properly but then it just gets stuck on the G1 screen. I redid all the steps and still same issue. Any suggestions?
PS I did noticed that my original radio is the same as the one I installed using cyanogen wiki, is this correct?

Problems with ViperROM 1.0.3 - Reboots; No Apps; No Service

This should be a reply to the main topic in the Dev section, but it's my first post. This is the only place I can post...
I'm new to Android, I've been an iPhone user since the beginning. I remember going through the steps to jailbreak and unlock the 1st iPhone by hand via command line. And I've been jailbraking iPhones ever since. Before that I was flashing ROMs to my Windows Phones and modding Xbox's. Now I'm ready for Android, but I'm stumped:
The HTC One is my first Android phone. It's the Sprint phone so I'm attempting to flash with ViperROM 1.0.3. I'm unlocked running TWRP and have followed the tips I've found to a 't'. But every time I flash, ViperROM boots, takes about 3 mins, Reboots, begins Upgrading Apps (a random number of apps each time, once 37, once 83, once 232) then finishes at the lockscreen. Unlock and the HTC setup begins. The keyboard disappears (from existence, from the shade notifier it want me to pick a keyboard, but won't let me), I never get network service, and after a few minutes the phone reboots. Once it reboots it comes to a black screen with on the notification bar with the battery and time. Then reboots again after a while. Never stops.
What I'm I doing wrong!? I'm wiping everything clean before I install, I've checked the MD5 of the ZIP, I've re-downloaded the ROM, nothing is working. What am I missing?
Maybe you should start with viper 1.0 and see how that one goes

I've figured out the problem, but no solution yet.
It's TWRP. For some reason it is not mounting /system. Not found a way to get it to mount /system on boot. You can mount it via 'Mount' from within TWRP and install viper without any problem, but when it reboots it's still not mounting /system
I tried using a plain stock ROM had the exact same problems. The OS can't see /system.
Any one know how to fix TWRP so it mounts /system? I've already tried overriding it with CWD then reinstalling TWRP. Didn't work. And CWD isn't HTC One Compatible, yet.
When you rooted did you do this step?

I suggest that you reinstall the recovery. Here's the link to recovery and the directions to install. http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/171

I had tried that already, even from that very link.
Went ahead and reinstalled again anyway, for kicks. Still no change.
Did you try using this method..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236814
and then this...

and finally your Rom of choice.
This is what I used and had no issues.

Yes. I did. That's how I started the process. And yes, I've tried Vipers's R/W root.
If that doesn't work I would relock it, install the RUU and start over. Seems your recovery install went wonky. Maybe your download was corrupted.?? Be patient, you'll get it bud.

Thank you for the help! It's very appreciated! Sucks to be the noob. Is hard needed to learn everything as you go on a new platform. But love figuring it out!
Now, I did try last night to flash a stock RUU (used this RUU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904)
I re-locked the bootloader and then used Hasoons all in one tool to flash it. It failed. Where can I find a good RUU to flash?
Also, this post seems to best explain my /system mount problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2194471

I haven't seen or heard of this tool. The only noobproof one i know of is hasoons. Also the RUU that you used is it the Sprint_HTC_One_m7wls_1.29.651.7_RUU.zip?? Thats the one I used and make sure you unzip it and run the exe.

Sorry, not boomer, it was Hasoon. I'm away from my computer and could only remember there were two O's in his name. :silly:
It might have been that RUU, I'll try that method when I get back home this evening. Thanks. I hadn't unzipped or run it via exe the one I got before
good luck. and make sure your bootloader is locked before you do it.
See my post on incremental updates in this forum or basically use TWRPs sideload adb feature in advanced . You need the Hassoon2000 all in one toolkit for the HTC One. Watch wwjoshdew on YouTube he covers it. Press Shift in the all in one root toolkit folder and select Run command prompt here. Once you do that put the phone in adb sideload mode, wipe all caches and then sideload the zip file with Viper 1.0.3 to your phone no need to change the name of thefile. TWRP will rename this to sideload.zip for you and begin to reflash your new ROM. When it is complete it will reboot to system. Make sure you make a Nandroid and never ever do a factory wipe in TWRP as I found out the hard way. It WILL erase your backups.lol

Did you do the advanced wipe from TWRP before flashing the ROM?
I got my phone working again, at the least, by running the RUU.
I'll attempt to install vipersROM again this weekend and see if re flashing the TWRP works.

Yes, I did. But installing the ROM wasn't the problem as I was able to mount /system from within TWRP. Wouldn't mount though when booting the ROM.
*Update*
Ran that RUU and re-flashed to stock on Monday night and ran stock for the rest of the week.
Yesterday I tried it all again and all went well with out an issue. (Flashed viperROM 1.0.4). Aside from one re-flash this morning after I tried installing some AirPlay app that halted the phone and kept it from starting up. But after a quick re flash without a wipe, that fixed that quickly.
It was a bad recovery flash. So, in the future if anyone has this problem and finds this post and skips to the end for an answer:
I used Hassoon2000 All-In-One Toolkit for HTC One
- Re-Lock Bootloader
- Re-flash to Stock via the correct RUU (extract the *.ZIP and run setup.exe. In this specific situation: Sprint_HTC_One_m7wls_1.29.651.7_RUU.zip)
- Unlock Bootloader
- Flash Recovary (i.e.: TWRP)
- Then one of the following to Flash a ROM:
+ Sideload a compatible ROM via ADB (In this specific situation: viperROM for the Sprint HTC One)
+ Upload ROM to Phone via DroidExplorer and Install directly from TWRP
Glad to see you got it figured out. :good:
