I remember back when I sold my N95 after two years of ownership I got about 60% of the purchase price back.
I bought my HTC HD2 T9193 for about $550 a little over a year ago. You could say the more generic T8585 (int'l version) went for maybe $450. I'd probably be hard pressed to get more than $200 for it now even if it were in immaculate condition. That's 36% of what I paid after just a little over a year, or 44% if you consider it tantamount to the more common variant.
I have an Intel Core 2 Quad system that I built for around $600 total. Parting it out, I made about $400 back after over two years of ownership. That's 66% of what I paid.
My i7-920 was purchased at launch for $290 and change. I got $150 for it pretty easily -- still over 50% over three years later.
I guess what I'm rambling about is that mobile phones are moving really fast technologically. The competition is great and it's awesome to see yesterday's high-end become stupidly affordable now for pretty much anyone.
It seems the only smartphones that hold their value nowadays are iPhones, and that's only until the next incremental generation is announced. Once 1280x800 phones become the norm even the venerable Samsung Galaxy S II will probably be worth chump change.
I'm never going to pay more than $300 for a new smartphone (unsubsidized and contract-free).

I've had my captivate almost a year now.
It is probably worth half of what it was then.
Doesn't really bother me at all honestly.. I wanted to get the best tech I could and the atrix was still unreviewed.. so I got the best I could and have no regrets.
I wanted something that had great organizational abilities and to be able to play a few games.
Couldn't be happier still with ics rom running oses that aren't even released yet.
The rat race is for rats who can't research a device, and then be happy with it.
I made sure there was great 3rd party dev support upfront and I couldn't be more pleased.
a $600 phone worth less than $300 after only 8 months
welcome to the android world
Value is subjective. It only becomes an issue when market forces are called into play. For instance, my car is worth more to me than it is in the market. If i crashed it, my £2000 car would get back £1000 from Insurance, and an equal replacement would cost me £3000.
A new car will lose 80% of it's 'value' after a 20% of it's useful life.
If you want value for money you buy old, and keep it until it's dead. Early adopters get the worst economy, whether tech or cars.
Dirk posted some words of truth that are pretty priceless.
Another great option is to buy "recertified" type things.
I got an "open box" set of headphones that came with manufacturer warranty. MSRP was 360$. Average price new was roughly 260$.
I found them for 170$.
Always pays to do some research and find out what your options are.. sometimes you can get it "new" almost half off if you read the fine print of "open box."
Early adopters always get screwed though.. not just in cost.. Highest chance of malfunction ect ect.
Also.. especially in the phone world.. a lot of "upgrades" are really more flash than substance. Something else to keep in mind is that computers are stationary.. less likely to be dropped and whatever else.
Damn you Dirk! I was gonna do a car analogy.
Guess I'm stuck with this point instead.
The HD2 was, and still is, a MASSIVELY popular device. That has a huge effect on the market as everyone's 18 or 24 month contracts have come to an end so ebay is flooded with the things. You stick a "buy it now" price that you think is fair and you get some rich arse who doesn't give a toss and starts bidding at 1p, with no reserve. You can't compete with that.
This is just one of the many reasons why your phone was worth diddly-squat. I bought a HD2 on the UK release date for just under £500. I sold it 18 months later for £200 to a guy that made me feel like I'd just pimped my daughter when he asked me "So what's this Android software that's on it?"
There's plenty of other reasons, but this is one. Sad but true.
Edit: Incidentally, the guy I sold my HD2 to was holding an iPhone when he answered the door. I didn't just pimp my daughter out. I pimped her out to a serial killer.

Weird I know, but economics would suggest that the market value is much closer to what you paid for the device.

Is it just me or is that really high? Or is that just what they go for over there? (I paid not even half that amount for mine)
Plus if someone is reading the Kaiser forum isn't it safe to assume they already have a Kaiser?
Brand new TyTN II's retail for around £450! I paid £460 for mine in Feb, then the price jumped to around £500 now its back to £450. The Touch Pro I want to upgrade to costs £500 at the moment.
I see you are a smart Alec but do you realise many people check this forum for info before they buy their devices just like I did and there are also many people with broken Kaisers that may want a replacement. I find your comments a bit uninformed for a senior member.
Honestly that is a little pricy! check gumtree to have an idea of price (just an idea) some may be fake, but i think its just a little over the top..#

Seriously man, you got ripped off.
That is not what they cost.
I did a little price checking and I couldn't find any online that are close to that expensive.
You can buy them brand new for cheaper than you are selling yours used for.
And yes, of course, there will be a couple people here that might possibly be interested in buying a Kaiser, buy the fact is that percentage of the total users here will be very small, and you will have more luck posting almost anywhere else.
Well I must admit the price is in the top for a used Tytn II... However saying that £300 is a price that is more than a new Tytn II just isn't true!
In Denmark the TYTN II costed about £ 520 when it was released around a year ago...
Now I'm not sure if you guys that say the price is to high have thought about that the £300 is without any contract? And saying that I actually find it very strange that many people in here buy their phone cheap but commits them selves to an expensive contract for 2 years knowing many of you will look after a new phonemodel after 6 months... ;-)
I would like to know what the total price is for a £150 TYTN II after the contract is over? If it's under the £300 then you're right the price is to high - if not then it must be ok... (saying that though the price for a used TYTN II is about £200 - £300 depending about the quality and extra stuff)
For reference my used Kaiser cost me $190USD which is about £120. So less than half of what you are asking.
£300 is over $600CAD. Yes I absolutely CAN buy a NEW Kaiser for less than that (no contract)
Maybe the pricing is different in the stores over there, but online that is what they go for.
In the UK, a Kaiser brand new offline definately costs £350 plus. If you buy off ebay they will around £200 depending on condition and if you buy/upgrade with a 12 month contract you can get it free but it may be a Vario3 etc.
So £300 is at the top end but depending on condition you might be able to sell for close to that on ebay. Especially if it is non branded and sim unlocked and includes your satnav software.
Maybe you checked some online stores in Kabul but if you look at the reputable and hTc recommeded sites I have listed below you will find out the cheapest one costs £435.

Got a new from ebay for £299 about a year ago. Lost it in a taxi last week, got another new one from ebay for £217 a couple of days ago. You can get a new touch pro for around £400 on ebay now.
Hey m8 dont wana ruin ur chances of selling but im from east london as well and bought a tytn2 off a mate for just under 150. writing this on it now and it also isnt scratched etc.
300 is high imho 200 is a reasonable amount maybe pushing 250 with ur co pilot stuff

No one was hating, I was just asking if that was really what they go for over there. Apparently it is. But then again I have sold phones for well over market value a few times as well.
$580USD for a used one is crazy. You should buy them from over here and sell them there you would make a killing. You could easily make $200-$300 profit on each one.
Indeed, European prices are ripoffs... Here a new Kaiser at retail price without contract is still $900 now! You can go down to about $450 with a 2-year contract.
However it's interesting to see that the used market prices are very low, no way you'd sell one at the price the OP sold it for, they usually go for under $400.
There are already concurrent offers (some guy sells refurbished/as new ones for about $280 with 1GB card and in large quantities...) or people get them off ebay.
This thread is madness!
I don't know anyone that would pay 300 quid for a used Kaiser.
I got mine over a year ago (the week they were released in the UK) free from T-mobile!
They were selling it then for 350 without contract!
You must have found a complete muppet to pay that much, good on you!
Seriously, just have a look on ebay right now - the most expensive one (out of 53) is 230 pounds!
300 euros for used?
kaiser can be easily found new for less than 400$ (~277euro)

You can obviously afford the money or you wouldn't have bought it. We can't order the Nexus phone from Google here in the UK, so we end up paying way more to get it from another source if we want it.

I paid almost $700 for mine from handtec when they first came out and I bought 2. I could have purchased 5 total with the prices now. With the next nexus I might not be so quick to get, I think I'll be able to wait a few months for prices to come down....hopefully.

What do I think? It's the best bang for your buck. And honestly, if you're using it while on contract, you're wasting your money. Contracts are a thing of the past. Take it to T-Mobile's $30 5GB, unlimited text, 100 minute plan or to Straight Talk's $50 unlimited everything (runs on AT&T or T-Mobile, whichever you choose). Don't forget you have a pentaband phone, which is rare even nowadays.
I paid $575 out of pocket (after trade-in credits from Amazon) for my Galaxy S III i9300, so don't complain.

- radios for both ATT & T-mobile
PLUS you make it available at an amazing price of $299
I simply have to get this phone if nothing else than to support the business practice of looking out for the customer.

Man klin you get around--
s3 to n4
i passed on the s3 and was liking the note2, now i don't know
started out with the n1 and rooted it first day
better be 42mb--didn't see anything on being lte
i just started today looking at this thread so haven't seen what carriers i have to choose from for 42mb in dayton ohio--maybe not announced yet
tmobile has upset me with no 42mb for my 1s yet--
Was selling my GS3 for the note II, now I'm going to buy a N4 and if I am unhappy then I will get the Note II. Win-Win
I think this is a great option that are not in an LTE covered city but I'm not exactly seeing why I should go from my SG3 with blazing LTE to this phone

It's because android/Google can't/won't support the closed source , proprietary blobs that exist in CDMA technology.
But I hear ya, I'm a CDMA user, too. Tied in to a family plan with 2 other members and we all have upgrade eligibility at different times. I'll never be able to get off the damn CDMA.

I don't know where you're going with this, but Verizon is overpriced. Unless you're receiving a discount through work, or Verizon is the only carrier available in your area, I see no reason to have Verizon. I would be paying over $80 more per month if I wanted to use LTE. I have 30Mb down at home, and only use about 1.5GB/5GB of T-Mobile's data per month. 20% of that is from data calls. I average about 7-10Mb down on Speedtests with T-Mobile, and I find that more than sufficient, for when I am away from wifi.
I'm so sick of the LTE hype. What are people doing with their phones that require 15Mb down -- especially when you're only given 2GB for $100 per month (without FCC fees, and taxes)? Can someone explain this to me? One can buy Comcast's 30Mb down, and T-Mobile's $30 plan for roughly $70 a month. I'm sure the price is different regionally, but please. That's still $30 cheaper than 2GB a month from Verizon without Comcast. I store a bunch of media on my Debian based VPS, which costs me $5.00 per month. All of my media is available, anytime I want it, at high speeds, without relying on "the cloud" and other bs. I'd like to hear one viable reason why LTE is worth the incredibly high premium, so far I haven't heard one.
I totally want this. So freaking much. But no money sigh. Pretty sure I won't be able to get 150 for my Inc S that I'm using right now. But man. Almost same price as Xiaomi Mi 2 but at least Google certified and better build quality.

My verizon contract runs out Jan. HUURAY! I may have to just leave Verizon behind and go with this phone. $300 for a phone is the kind of price I can live with unlike the $600+ we've been seeing .
I'm selling my galaxy note and buying this. I was skeptical when I first saw the leaks, but the device does look beautiful when you take a closer look.

I saw picz,I'm waiting for reviews and hoping that it won't be rip off in Serbia lol really like that It's not sammy again.
It's a complete rip, but Daily Steals apparently has stock of Nexus 4's for $499:
http://mobile.dailysteals.com/
MODS: Please collapse this along with the "Nexus 4... Round 2" thread. I apologize for the inconvenience.
List price $799? Really? Assholes...
Lol yep, it's a steal all right. Just for them, not us
Got my galaxy nexus through them. Was the UK model and at a decent price but they are very shady and it took a month from order to get to my door and the shipping part of it was only two days of that. Oh wait a minute, kind of like ordering this phone off the play store...
You can buy it for the same price in a TMobile store tomorrow.

Of course they did. That is what the exclusivity agreements and the throttling of supply is all about.

Aha! They're the jerks that bought a hundred on launch day, making it sell out so that they can profit off us.
My life for Aiur
Its still cheaper then on our local mediamarkt (will be available in 3 weeks there)
And just about 10% more expensive then in our google playstore.
I really wish i could get is also for 349USD.
Take a look at this, they did the same thing with the Galaxy Nexus for 530 USD!

Yeah but sadly we can't, at least not right now.
I ordered mine on eBay from a guy from Germany who managed to buy 2 when they went on sale.
Paid €440 for an 8GB version *sigh* but I'm really fed up with my SIII so it's worth it!
Daily Steals is a legitimate company. I am not saying that they should be charging $500 for this, but I am saying if you order from them you will get it. Be warned however, that it will take 2-4 weeks before you get what you ordered. They are the slowest shipping company I have ever bought from. So, with that being said, by the time you get your Nexus 4 from Daily Steals, it will more than likely be back in stock at the Play Store for $350 +tax and shipping and you will be kicking yourself.
How the HELL did they get stock??? That's pretty shady. The price, as compared to eBay, really isn't that much. Yes, I am aware of the MSRP, but after tax you are paying a ~$100 premium. Worth it for everyone? No. Some? Yep.

I just learned this myself. I bought a headset from them on November 2nd. Still waiting for it.
I'll just leave this here: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Daily_Steals
Just because they are "legitimate" doesn't mean some people never ever received what they purchased.

This guy is epic. :highfive:
Don't expect a warranty if you by from dailysteals. I got my Galaxy Nexus from dailysteals before the play store started selling it directly. They advertised a one year warranty. Took forever to ship. When I cracked the screen Samsung refused to help me because it was the international version. Had it been the playstore version they would have replaced the screen for $200.

So when they say daily steal, they mean from you right?
They most likely don't have stock and will order the amount sold and then ship to you. They probably have a connect somewhere in the supply chain.
I would ask if they actually have stock.

Samsung officially announced the S4 will come in new colors: Blue Arctic, Purple Mirage, Red Aurora, Brown Autumn, Pink Twilight, Gold Brown & Gold Pink. Red Aurora (16GB) is already being offered at AT&T for $199.9 w/ a two-year contract. Asia will most likely receive the new colors first, then Europe & then (hopefully) us in the U.S, but probably not until late 2013. Will keep everyone updated when more info is released. Looks like I'll be putting my white one up for sale, if we get these :fingers-crossed:
Update
Arctic Blue is now available in the UK with the following companies: Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile and Orange. Other countries & companies not confirmed, yet.
Purple Mirage (Sprint Exclusive)- Coming to the U.S. this fall. "Just in time for school"
Red Aurora (AT&T Exclusive): Now available.
Brown Autumn (Verizon Exclusive): Now available.
Pink Twilight released in Taiwan. Other countries not confirmed, yet.

Spending hundreds of dollars to get a different colored phone that you already own? If you have the money to throw away, then go for it. In this day and age, that doesn't sound very practical. You will have to pay full price for the phone. Even if you successfully sell the white one, you're going to have to pay hundreds out of pocket to change phones. All the more power to ya if you do I guess. Good luck getting a refurb if something breaks on the colored one. If they can even get a replacement, it'll take weeks to get another if it isn't a popular color. With my e4gt, black could be gotten in a week. White took at least twice as long. Knowing sprint, it wouldn't be financially smart to offer a bunch of colors. You'd most likely have to order it online because the stores wouldn't carry it because it's not a high demand item.
Good news will be getting one of these for the other half, she is a pink freak. Well worth the money IMO. Might be hard to replace but she can always use her white one if she needs to. Of course something better may be out by then also so who knows.

Agree to disagree. I'm not worried about it as much as you are. The phone just came out & people are willing to buy mine. With that being said, I won't be spending as much as you think I would be. Hundreds out of the pocket to change phones? Are you dealing with some blackmarket "Sprint" dealer from Detroit? My Sprint doesn't charge to switch phones or port numbers. It really comes down to IF Sprint will even have the color I want. I can see them definitely stocking purple, but I highly doubt they will offer the other colors. In this day & age, people jump the gun every time a new iPhone or Android comes out for whatever their reasoning may be. I will be getting a new S4 based on the color. I'm a girl. It's what I do. Everything is online lol. I preordered my current S4 online

Exactly, not a big deal. I'm a pink freak, too lol. Everyday there's a new, bigger & better thing out. I'm stuck in this contract for two years & I'm going to get a phone I'll be happy with for two years, even if that means spending a little more for happiness.
It won't cost her a dime probably. Maybe tax would be the main difference in price. You can sell these phones for retail used.
Plus if she gets a pink one and had to have it replaced and they don't have any refurbished then she just gets a brand new one. They can't make you wait. I've gotten brand new ones many times when they don't have refurbs.

What is this phone full price, 650? With contract renewal or new line, maybe 250 or less if you can find it on sale. I got mine for 199. Let's say you used your upgrade on the one you have now. As far as I know, if you want another phone, you have to pay full price. There's the option of upgrade now. I forgot about that one. Say you got your phone a couple of months ago, you have 22 months left until you can upgrade without paying additional fees. I have no idea what the upgrade now cost would be. I'd be surprised if someone could get 300 for a used s4 in working order with clean ESN.

I only paid $150 for mine new. No matter what, I'm making a profit so I will barely make a dent in my purse to pay for the pink one lol.
Besides 600 bucks isn't that much to keep the other half happy. Then we sell her old one for let's say even 400 bucks. That makes it 200 bucks out of the pocket. She spends more than that on a pair of shoes she wears twice. I call the phone a bargain. Nothing wrong with paying good money for something you will enjoy. Its all about what it is worth to the person buying it.

I hear you on the shoes thing. Shoes and clothes. My girl can easily spend 600-700 on clothes at the Buckle every few weeks. Most of it she only wears once and never again, either given away to her friends(if they are small enough) or pushed to the back of one of her closets.
No matter what you get for the phone its still going to off set the cost of a new one pretty much. Do what makes you happy and ignore what others think.
I wonder what the Sprint buy back value is for a s4? Purple looks cool but I can't see myself going more into debt just to change a color. Right now I'm working full time, still broke most of the time, and car in desperate need of multiple repairs. FML.
Buy back is a joke sell the phone you'll get probably at least 400.

Don't do the buy back. Like he said above, it's a flat out joke. Craigslist is an easy $400+ for our phones. It's best to sell it on Craigslist, Amazon, Ebay or Swappa.
The purple one is the prettiest IMO.

I'm not a fan of purple, but they did a good job on it. They chose the colors well. I wish I could have them all for every outfit lol. Definitely have to give it up for the obvious one, Pink Twilight. Still holding my breath for it.
