[Q]How to install Amon_Ra recovery from CWM - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have a Dream with CWM recovery installed. I want to flash the Amon_ra one.
How do I do that without bricking?
Why I want Amon_ra? Because it has the terminal so I can change mtdpartmap content without using a PC.
Will the MTD partition mod work from clean Amon_ra recovery?

Rom Manager helps
Download the latest Rom manager from Market, it comes default with Clockwork mod and Amora 1.7 xx. with the Rom Manager version greater than 4, you can have 2 flash recoveries. Flash in Rom manager and boot to recovery hone + power button.

I read that the installation with the terminal is not recommended, instead, one should take fastboot. Which method is better Rom Manager or fastboot?

More secure is fastboot, but there are many people who feel uncomfortable to use it ...

Thanks.
After the installation of fastboot. Is it easy to use.

Clockworkmod recovery not booting after a full system boot

Can anyone give me a explanation why after installing rom manager and the clockworkmod recovery i can imediatly boot into recovery, but after doing a normal system boot and try again do boot into recovery (through rom manager or even manualy pressing power + vol down) i can´t??? It stops at a black screen with a white exclamation triangle and a android icon. If i go through flashing the recovery again (in rom manager) and after that i press "reboot into recovery" it works well. But thats the only time i can. Meannig: i have to flash the clockworkmod recovery every time i want to go there. Is this normal? Is it rom manager? clockworkmod recovery? or the Android OS? I´m on a rooted Nexus with a unlock bootloader (androidroot) running stock froyo. What can i do to make the clockworkmod recovery stick?
I´m a newby in flashing roms, and i would love to try a modified rom. But for that to happen i need to have full trust in the apps i´m using to do that. Until now i can´t say that i feel confident to go through with the flashing process. Any help would be much apreciated.

I also have the same problem with AmonRA Recovery. After a long search for the answer thru google search, I found out that Custom Recovery won't stick with the Stock ROM. You need to flash your N1 with a custom ROM then only the Custom recovery will work. If you do a nandroid restore back to the stock rom, the custom recovery will disappear again. You need to reflash the custom recovery again to get you back to the custom recovery screen for flashing custom ROM.
Thank you for the quick answer

mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p.bak
mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak

If you would read the recovery installation instructions in Wiki, you'd notice the instructions for removal of those 2 files, that rewrite the recovery on system boot.

unable to load clockwork recovery!

my 3 button recovery mode is working. however, i need to disable verification so as to install roms from the SD card. hence, i installed rom manager to use clockworkmod. i flashed clockworkmod recovery, and then chose the option to boot into clockwork mod recovery. however what appears on the screen is exactly the same as my normal 3br combo! no extra options whatsoever that clockwork recovery is supposed to provide. what did i do wrong?

You need 2e recovery in order to flash any unsigned ZIP files.
Flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 using ODIN and then you can flash any ZIP files. You will also be able to enter CWM recovery.
Hope this helps.
oh lol thanks!

[Q] How to download clockworkmod and install while offline?

Hello.
ROM manager is unable to download clokworkmod recovery. Maybe because I'm in a "sanctioned country" CUBA and I have a lot of internet restrictions from both Google and my ISP.
My question is: Can I manually download clokworkmod recovery and copy it on the SD card and have ROM manager install it?
If the answer is yes: How? and where do I find Clockworkmod for the captivate?
i897 stock 2.1.1 rooted and unlocked.
Thanks.

all rom manager does is put this zip file on your sdcard. its not needed.
just drop this on the root of your sdcard, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice. CWM will come up then

the one caveat to this ... make sure you have the 2e boot loader when you boot into recovery. The 2e bootloader is the stock bootloader that comes with froyo. 3e will require you to have the update packages signed, and therefore will need to downgrade to 2e before you can switch to CWM.

Wrong.
2e RECOVERY comes from firmware 2.1, which the OP stated he was on. Froyo comes with 3e recovery. Has nothing to do with bootloader, because the bootloaders are the same between eclair and Froyo.

GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Working, one more question. I noticed three things:
1 - If I reboot to recovery again it goes into stock recovery (2e). Then I hit reinstall packages only once and ClockWorkMod comes up.
2 - If I delete the update.zip from the sd card CWM will not work.
3 - ROM Manager still says that CWM is not installed therefore is not working OK.
Is all this ok? Should I select: "Install sdcard:update.zip" while in CWM? Should I do something else?

That sounds pretty normal to me. If you are getting into CWM then thats all that really matters. The deal with ROM manager is that it doesnt work very well with our phones. But if you are trying to flash a custom ROM you can still do it without ROM Manager. However, you need to read up about the rom you want to flash because it is a slightly risky process. Its as risky as using ROM Manager and almost Russian roulette if you dont read.
But do not delete the update.zip after you install it. I dont know if it messes with the boot process of recovery mod but I do know its better to have that backup file on your SD card already if you run into a problem later on.
Don't bother with ROM manager. Its close to useless with SGS phones. Make sure your 3 botton combo works and you should be golden. Also making a jig isn't a bad idea also, just incase you do screw up and you get in a softbrick where your keycombos decide to not work.

Can't access recovery

Hi there, after rooting my phone with the "DoomLord's via Zergrush Exploit" , and after installing rom manager and flashing clockworkmod. I just can't access it.
If I load into the bootloader and click recovery, I get an image with a ! sign and a picture of an android, the same happens when I load recovery through rom manager. I have flashed the recovery twice now and my phone's just not having it. My phone works no problem, I just dont understand it
All I want to do is to make a backup and install a custom rom
Am I doing somthing wrong?
(Yes, my bootloader is locked BTW)
Very simple - you didn't flash the recovery properly, so you're getting to stock recovery.
Yup like Jack_R1 stated, the flash didn't stick or you didn't do it right.
Open Rom Manager, at the top it will tell you what recovery you have.
Does it show anything?
You could also try adb if you have that setup
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide#Installing_a_Custom_Recovery_Image
You could even install it via terminal on your phone
Heck try this recovery, it's good
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291970
Try THIS. Install the application and it will install the best recovery
Rom manager tells me that i have clockworkmod 5.0.2.0
I'll try installing the recovery through terminal when i get back to my pc
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
EDIT: Having seen the other recovery you've stated, i'll try and install that.
Also, does it matter about which version of android i'm running? could that result of a bad install of the recovery through clockworkmod?
Its 2.3.4 stock rom if anyone's intrested
FINAL EDIT:
Thank you!
4EXT flashed perfectly, after using the app to reboot into the bootloader, it loaded up that. Many thanks!

[Q] Nexus One Rom Problem

hi everyone,
I want to install modaco desire rom my nexus one but my trackball is broken and not able to be repaired. How can i install rom without trackball. my english is bad sorry for that.
Best regards
I'm not an expert, but you can flash roms with the computer, you only need to conect the phne to the PC and start in fastboot, no use of the trackball. But i'm not sure how to flash roms with PC
Install a recovery that allows you to work with volume buttons and/or touch buttons instead of trackball. Try the latest CWM of 4EXT.
easy:
1) root your current rom (if not already rooted)
2) install rom manager from market or koush's webpage
3) download custom ROM to SD card using browser, USB, whatever
4) flash CWM recovery through rom manager
5) flash custom ROM through rom manager, rom manager will reboot to recovery and flash rom for you
thanks to all for help i install clockworkmod recovery v3.0.0.5 its open but i can't any processing just waiting. what can i do ?
