Mediaserver battery drainage ): fix? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mediaserver is draining a lot of my battery as in 54% im on Galaxy Droid 3.3 JVA and ive search other related threads but they dont seem to have a fix anyone have answers?

I noticed that to, Media Server was taking 35% of my battery so I searched and found this post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980575 .
According to that post a corrupt file (like a picture or mp3) can cause the battery drain. So I went through my files and found that I had 3 corrupt pictures. I deleted them and boom, battery usage from Media Server went down to 7%.
Three days later the battery usage was back up to 30%. This time I haven't found a solution .
Btw I'm using a Nexus S.

My phone's Cell Standby is eating like 80% of my battery even in flight mode. even if I don't use the phone at all after full charging, the battery goes from 90% to 20% in just about 10-12 hours. I don't know what's causing the problem.
In the cell standby battery status it shows Time without network: 100%
Is there any solution to this? This problem started after I flashed to Gingerbread 2.3.4 XXJVP (GT-I9000)

same problem here on ICS 4.2. Media server is keeping my phone awake and so unable to get into deep idle. Really draining the batter hanging the CPU around 400mhz. So far after resetting my galaxy, it's been able to delve into deep idle. But still not sure what caused the media server problem in the first place, and i doubt it's the last time ill see it. In which case i may have to try going through my sd files as in the post above.

i have that problem too..
but only when i listen music with poweramp.
i have even deleted my photos and stuff
is it possible somehow that songs id3 tags causes these problems?

Hmm yeh not sure. I also had a problem with my stock music player not being able to play any songs at all. So I wonder if that did it for me.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Well idont know.maybe there is corrupted file in my music files.but this is first time i have these problems. Been using many roms before and never had problems with mediaserver..

Installed Skype and called once. Battery drainage after installation, turned out the Skype contact sync was causing the issue. Unticked the sync box and battery life back to normal.

How to fix it
The mediaserver thing runs when you open media(photos, music videos) in any program. If you inactivate it you will not be able to access your media. So when your finished with viewing photos or music just go to
apps-->all-->mediastorage-->force stop
DONT CLEAR DATA, I DID IT ONCE AND I COULDN'T ACCESS MY MUSIC FOR A DAY!!!

Battery issue on Fresh 2.1d.. HELP PLEASE!!

So I flashed the new Fresh ROM and it is taking FOREVER to charge. I finally got it up to 100% and less than 7 hours, it was completely dead.
Any ideas?
Me too! Killed my battery in 7 hours while charging overnight!
Have you looked at what's using the battery?
I know in some of the other 2.1 roms, facebook is constantly syncing which kills the battery.
You can use logcat in sdk to see what the phone is doing while it's idle.
Also, service can also change the drain on your battery. I know at work (inside a 3 story brick building) I get horrible service and my phone is dead by noon if it's not plugged in. At home, it can go all day and then some.
Same issues here. Takes forever to charge and dies quickly. I haven't flashed the new radio yet....could this be this issue?
I've been using it since he released it and battery life is more than excellent. I can go a whole day then some
Go under settings, about phone, battery. What is your uptime and awake time?
Then tap on battery use. What has the highest percentage of use time on your battery?
Also check out 'cell standby'. Tap it.. Time Without Signal should be very low, or missing.
up time 8:57
awake time : 2:42
highest use is close between cell stanby48% and phone idle 47%
time without signal : 0%
BTW my battery was at 38% with little use(a few text msgs and fb mobile a couple of times)
TWS is fine then. Do you have the sync icon constantly running?
And what is your PRL/PRI (sorry if you posted that already).
PRI - flipz_01
PRL - 60663
What about the sync icon?
sorry....no sync icon
Weird. Any mods/themes/etc?
What I would do at this point is wipe everything (including ext), and reflash, then see if you still have the problems. I haven't had those issues, so I can't give you anything else to look at.
Perhaps someone else can, but that's all I can think of.
You could try the new radio. Some have said they get much better battery life with it (which is likely caused by the radio not having to search for signal as often...but since your TWS is 0% I'd be surprised if that's it). Try that, then nuke and pave would be my suggestion.
Last night was the first night that I had my alarm set. Could this have anything to do with the drain?
I had a weird issue with the battery. I don't know what exactly caused it and I could not pinpoint it with "Battery Use" nor "Spare Parts." My phone was staying constantly awake though, no matter what.
I eventually just partitioned the SD card, with no ext partitions (no apps2sd), flashed fresh again, and now it's all working great. I am installing my apps very slowly and monitoring them to see which one may have been causing the problem. So far no problems though.

I was getting decent battery life when I flashed 2.0d originally so this might not help you but after I flashed the newest radio my battery life got way better. I can listen to slacker radio for 4 hours while studying and use the phone intermittently throughout the day and get about 12 hours out of the battery life.
anybody who has crappy battery life check if your phone is on GSM auto PRL?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651848&highlight=battery
I'm running Fresh Rom and my battery is great. I haven't charged my phone since 6:30am this morning(it's 8:30pm here now) and it's at 60%. I'm using the new radio too.
scratch what I said yesterday, lol... my phone randomly rebooted overnight and now I can't get it to stop being 100% awake...
EDIT: Tried rebooting, tried "power cycling" phone, did the CDMA (Auto PRL) fix just in case, didn't install any new apps, battery use shows TWS at 0%, Cell Standby Time on = My total uptime.
Spare Parts Battery History shows my phone as 100% running, no sleep time.
Spare parts partial wake usage just shows Android System..
Battery is draining like crazy..

That shouldnt be an issue any more. Flipz fixed it in 2.0d.
Change your screen brightness to auto. When I first flashed it was at the highest setting and killing my battery. A lot better now...

Battery Life / Recharge Time?

I recharged my phone in an hour when it had just powered off by itself for being too low... I used it for like 5 minutes and it was already down to 80%... Bad battery?

Sure sounds like a bad battery.
Just to make sure...
1) make sure you don't have some app that is running GPS
2) If not needed, try turning off BlueTooth
Those two items will drain battery faster than usual.
I sometimes find the battery is really inaccurate, depends on if the phone's running hot or whatnot...
Also you might want to get a task manager and periodically close all the apps (some apps have a one-click kill all widget), and turn off syncing, gps, and bluetooth
Battery indicator hasn't always been accurate or me - even with a brand new battery
There are several apps/widgets that are poorly coded which cause high battery drain as well.
Try only using stock widgets as well, I find that helps alot.

Yea, the only Widget I run thats not stock is Beautiful Widgets Home Small, set to update every 2 hours.
I have bluetooth and GPS off always unless I'm actively using them. I just seemed strange it was so fast to recharge mainly.
I've noticed the battery capacity jumps up and down depending on what you are doing. For example if I disable 3G, it jumps up, if I enable it, it might jump down 10% briefly then go back to where it was...
Very strange.
Also, I find the app Juice Defender (free version) is a life saver. My battery life has gone from around 12 hours to > 2 days since using it.
What it does is disable your 3G AP and only enables it every X minutes for Y minutes.. I think the default is 15/2. The result is you still get your notifications (a few mins behind), but your battery lasts WAAAYYYY longer.

Thanks for the tip!
Now going hunting for "Juice Defender".
yeah, juice defender is great. The free version has limited options but the default options really save battery life on my vogue.
I read a while ago that there was a problem with the stock text messaging app. Is that resolved? I use Handcent SMS, but i don't know if it is good or bad for battery life comparatively.
JuiceDefender is fantastic, it works. Except you can't be listening to anything and have it running (music, podcasts, etc...) because when it kills the 3G connection the audio stops. I've talked with dzo and looked at the code myself and I don't see a way to keep it from happening unless there's a way to kill the 3G connection without issuing an 'ATH' to the modem or somehow ignoring the 'No Carrier' message that follows it...
this happens no matter what music player you are using? I was hoping it was just Cube, but had not gotten a chance to try with other media players. Is there a way to create an ap that autodiables jucedefender when you play music?

Not that I'm away of... I just manually disable juicedefender before I start playing my music... and HOPE that I remember to turn it back on...
I am not endorsing this battery/seller/etc or that this is the battery to buy in any way. Just came across this opportunity and wanted to put it out there for anyone that wanted to check it out:

Samsung Galaxy S Battery Drain

Hi,
im having battery drain problems the phone wont last more than 5-6 hours send 20-30 texts listen to some music, i have turned off backgroud data and live wallpapers, im using something called advanced task killer free to kill the apps that are running, but i close them the re open the task bar and stuff like music player has reopened
ive also seen a post about which batterys are better is there a better one i can buy? my batterys a G7
any ideas ?
cheers
Stop using the task kiler and you'll probably see better battery life. Task killers have been proven more harmful than helpful on the newer versions of android so using it is pointless. Also pay attention to what you have synced and how often. tons of web apps synching will drain the battery faster, as will having the gps and wifi turned on--if you're not using them, disable them.
thanks for the reply i will remove the task manager,
auto sync is turned off and i only use email by refreshing the inbox
Come here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884816
In short: Have you recently updated via Kies to JPY version? If so, stop using your wifi. There is a bug with wifi with this newest firmware.
hi,
i update to 2.2.1 through kies
Do you use wifi?
If yes, switch to data, battery life will be better. You should be able to get around 48h of light active usage (i mean browsing and calling and what not) with 3g data on.
i dont really use the wifi, signals really good around me, i only got the phone friday, brought it of a friend,
charged the phone fully before i went out last night about 7pm by 1.30am the phone had cut off, that was only using the facebook andriod app and sending text messages.
Than there is something terribly wrong. Do a wipe and factory reset, if you didnt after getting a device from your friend.. It seems that some application misbehaves and drains battery.
You can check it by typing *#*#info#*#* in dialer
Several options there, if there is something strange you will see it. (suggest looking into Battery history, usage statistics)
i dont know how to type in dialer sorry sounds very stupid all i have are digits

From the above post:
TechnicR said:
About my battery life:
Previously I was on Darky's v5, with that the phone lasted 2-3 days with normal usage.
After flashing to v7 (with 100% battery) I also got the fast drainage problem. Here is what I did:
1) Turn OFF phone
2) Charge till it says it is FULL
3) Start in RECOVERY
4) WIPE battery stats
5) RESTART android (yes, it might already be on 98% or so)
6) USE phone heavily. Don't worry if it drops too fast. Use it till the Android system turns OFF automatically (it happens when your battery is below 1% - for me the phone was on 1% for about 40 mins. This is where it heavily myscalculated
7) PLUG IN your charger, TURN ON android and wait till it is FULLY charged again. (It is better if you don't use the phone at this charging up)
Now, after you disconnect the charger, you should still have 100% for some time (I've been using the phone for 32 mins - writing this post - and it is still on a hundred percent) and with this, I got back the 2-3 days battery life with normal usage.
Also, you should set WiFi to: "Never when plugged in" and by default I disable Data Network. But my phone is using WiFi all the time so it doesn't really matter
So to summerize this method, the key is to show the phone the battery's minimal capacity too, by using it till it is on null. Because with charging to 100% than wiping or flashing only introduces the maximum capacity to the system and the minimum is only guessed. THIS gives the faulty reportes and makes us think the phone drains too fast.
Try this method, than feel free to share your results

hi
I have the same problem. I bought it 2-3 days ago. today i charged it full while fone was off, switched on at around 8AM my usage detail was
3g was on
gmail on sync
skype on sync
5-10 min of skype calling
5 min of normal calling
5-10 min of facebook browsing through android app
30 min of chatting on skype
at 2PM the fone was at 20% battery. My wifi and gps were off all day.
is there anything i can do to get atleast 15 hours of battery with normal use
regards
harris
If you are having issues with your battery, before you try killing tasks, changing setting and what not and especially if you are running custom ROMs, then you need to recondition your battery. The same goes for anyone who is having high drain issues.
If you follow the steps I posted from someone else's post and then find that your battery is not having issues, then start looking at your modem (if using a custom ROM or you've upgraded to new firmware).
ive done a factory restore, ive found what my usage says idle 4% the display 80%
contrast is switched right down
i know im not using any custom roms im using the firmware that you download through kies

How I solved my battery drain problem!
Have you tried turning off 3G?
I also had this issue battery drain was huge. It started appearing suddenly one day. Its a very slow process to figure out the culprit. I did a step by step analysis.
1. Found out that battery drain was happening only when 3G was on. Verified this by switching off data network (long press power button to deactivate).
2. Also verified abnormal data usage in my carrier page when I was not using my phone [like - 3G was on and I was watching a movie at a theater].
3. I also saw abnormal battery drain soon after I started Google Maps after a fresh reboot.
4. So I identified the culprit - Google Maps - but was not sure how to solve battery drain [Google Maps restarts, if you kill it].
5. I installed a variety of apps to identify the battery hog. Finally I went for Task Identifier.
6. Task Identifier finally showed me what programs started while my screen was off, etc. And I started noting them. Finally I figured out that Google Maps::BackgroundFriendService was running frequently.
7. A quick search on Google helped me understand that this is about Google Latitude. It searches for your friend's location every now and then - leading to battery drain!!!
8. I opened up Latitude and signed out from it [I guess the sign out option is in Menu -> Privacy].
9. Do not re-open Google Latitude after this - you will get signed in again leading to battery drain.
10. After 2-3 months of search and prodding, I finally figured out the cause of battery drain and fixed it - now I get 2 - 3 days of charge in my battery under normal usage!!
I'm happy now!!
Hi,
If you're using Froyo and can access file in your phone,
In task manager , on the tab "Summary", click on the "start monitoring" button. Let it monitor the phone over the night. The next morning, there should be 2 files created in your sdcard, one is CPUxxxxx and the other one is battxxxxxx.
The Batxxx tells you when the percentage of the battery at certain time of time. the CPUxxxx will tell you wht applications are running during that period.
When i used it first time, i notice that facebook and lattitude always running - when I stop these 2 tasks; i get a normal drain again.
while you guys are at it.
here's my "problem".
when I surf for an hour over 2g I losing about 10% batterylife and android reports that my display uses around 90% to 95% of the battery.
display is set to lowest brightness + screen filter.
is that normal? (im guessing it is not).
used dozens of different roms (stock, darky, jims, etc...), same behaviour everywhere.
i already did all the battery stat wiping and whatnot.
is it a faulty battery or display or something?
for the OP, maybe a combination of the above with this could help :

[Q] Mediaserver problem?

Hi guys i have just bought this phone and in battery use i see that mediaserver drain about 30% of battery is this a known issue and how can i resolve?
Inviato da Sony Xperia SP
Not an issue if you use it a lot to hear music or watch videos or photos. I should be back to normal on the next full charge. Everytime the battery is fully charged android creats a new stats file.

The problem is that I took only 5-6 photos only for try the camera, I listened to music for about 40 minutes and I didn't do anything else. With this use I think that 20-25% of mediaserver is a very high battery drain.. Anyone has this problem?
I have the same problem, sometimes it gets 25-30%, and its brand new phone, no music, video, just couple of photos to test camera. Have too high Keep awake time on it, sometimes 2,3h. Here is the picture...

We have the same problem. I've a brand phone too. I read that someone has resolved the problem with titanium backup and he has block the media process. I will wait until 4.3 has been released then if the problem doesn't solve I will root and try to resolve by me.
