GTab 8.9 4G LTE - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

First my apologies for posting in DEV but my question was ignored in the Q&A section and I really need to know the answer. I plan to pickup a 8.9 4G LTE today after work at the AT&T store and need to know if this current crop of custom roms is usable on this particular 8.9 model tablet? I was looking at it at the store and it said it was i99x or something and I don't see any of those numbers mentioned here in the forum for this device. Thanks in advance for your patience with the post here and for any info provided. Very cool device and much different than my Samsung InFuse phone running GB.

All I’ve seen is WiFi roms, no roms for 3G/LTE roms for GSM. It’s a SGH-I957 model. I’m still playing with the idea of getting one, since you get the Galaxy Skyrocket free too with a purchase. No root either yet for this thing …

I picked up a SR on launch day. 2 days ago I piked up this tab. They credited me the price of the SR towards the tab! sweet deal!.

That is why I decided to get the 8.9 Tab. I wanted a Skyrocket but I just got an Infuse a couple months back so I couldn't upgrade for the Skyrocket. So I figured I would get the Tab and Skyrocket and replace my Infuse with the SR. I have a client who is footing the bill and we are going to use one of the inactive corporate phones to do the swap with my phone or else it couldn't be done. I guess I will just get it anyway and wait till some development comes down the pike. It is a sweet form factor and I think I will enjoy it.
Infused with Android DNA

I would really love to be able to get root on my new 8.9 4g LTE Tablet. Is there any devs out there willing to take a look at it for me or am I left out in the cold?
This thing is ridiculously slow and laggy i sure hope someone develops for it or i am going to ditch it quick. My Skyrocket is so much more speedy than this tablet. I like it but it needs help bad.

I have experienced serious lagging scrolling screens changing apps etc. I also have had it completely lock up on me several times and had to hold the power button until it rebooted this thing is really a disappointment so far. Hopefully there will be some updates coming down the road soon.

I'm having the same issues. I just picked this up yesterday with the skyrocket deal. Coming from using a Motorola Xoom which has very little bloatware, I'm terribly disappointed with this tablet. I love the form factor, but it's slow as molasses. Hopefully someone with knowledge will take the time to find a solution and share it with those of us who have no idea what to do

Does it have lag/stuttering when scrolling homescreens in portrait?

It pretty much lags doing anything from opening apps to Widgets or sliding through the screens. I've also has it completely freeze several times and I've only had it over the weekend. The LTE version from AT&T has tons of bloatware.

I hate my sprint galaxy tab...Am I the only one?

I am really starting to feel left out of the cool kids club(GSM Tab Owners). Owning the sprint galaxy tab is like buying a mustang V6. I mean sure you have a mustang, but any ordinary ricer with a decent tune could blow you out of the water. Sure you could strap on a short air ram(rooting), or even sport tune(rooted apps), but your still no V8(Roms). Yeah I like cars a little, but I am really sad about my Galaxy tab from sprint. I had very high hopes, and they were all crushed......So Devs if you find it in your hearts........bring us some Sprint tab LOVE.
Well im running hc alpha 2.5 on my Sprint tab i think thats not to bad ,of course all thanks to spacemoose!

Your problem is that GSM technology is world wide, so you have people from all over the world working on roms.
CDMA is only in the US, so you have a much more limited set of potential developers.
Do you have a link to the rom? and does the market work?

It is in the "Android Development" section of the Samsung Galaxy Tab forums. And yes, the market works. While the GSM crowd is still getting Gingerbread ROMs/ports, we CDMA users have HC now. There are some glitches as the developer is still in the early stages, but overall, it runs, it's a great move in the right direction, and it's on CDMA first. (The dev was working on CDMA and GSM simultaneously, but the development on CDMA for whatever reason wasn't as difficult. I don't know if the GSM HC works as of now, but I know the dev. was close....)
And if you hate it that much, put it on ebay, sell it, and get a GSM.
Thanks for the info,
I don't hate the device as much as sprint.....and the way they locked up all the goodness behind profit grubbing.

You're welcome, although I don't understand the part about all the goodness being locked up. You just have to root your tab, just like all other Android devices. Once rooted, the device, and experience, are what you make it
I have someone that wants to trade me their sprint gtab 3g (I use sprint) for my wifi 16g ipad. I have a nook color rooted running cm7 overclocked at 1300 and an evo 4g running cm7. Do you guys think that's a fair trade? I'm not a big apple fan but my wife gave me the ipad for my birthday and use it for Netflix only. I need to pull the trigger quick before this Guy changes his mind. I just want to make sure I'm not making a dopey trade.... thanks guys!

I have a question. I rooted my tab when I first got it, how did you install alpha 2.5, I have sprint and when I try it with rom mananger ,sprint is not in the recovery just att, verizon and tmobile. I tried to flash the verizon recovery, and it was a no go. It reboots into the samaung recovery. If you have a sprint tab how did you do it?
I have nothing but mad love for my Sprint Tab. Bear in mind I'm not doing nearly as much with it as you're wanting to do though. I don't have it activated with Sprint and I'm not flashing ROMs or anything on it.
If you want to make some changes to your Sprint tab, check out the informational thread I created.

I found a new love for my tab, I flashed it to 2.5 HC and it is neat again. It's buggy, but fun to toy with again........Yay Tab.
I've played with the HC 2.5 port, and it's just too slow for me. Stock, rooted with CWM (converted to ext4) seems to be the best thing out there for my uses thus far. Hoping we'll get a official gingerbread soon, or at least a functional CM7 port.. otherwise i love my tab! Sure there's not tons of roms to play with like the GSM tabs, but I'm happy with what i paid for it and my uses..

[Q] considering upgrading/sidegrading

I was considering buying the Infuse I was wondering if anybody has/uses both I have a few questions:
Does the GPS actually work without a random hardware factor.
How easy is it to install a custom ROM compared to the Cappy
Is there a Better choice the 4.5" screen is nice but is there a new/better phone in the works with a dual core that would be better to wait on.
Anything else I should know before/if I choose to upgrade.
Why don't you ask this in the infuse Q&A? They would know better than us.
I was looking for a comparison between the 2 phones they could have have told me all about the Infuse on their section but I was curious about how it stacked up against my current phone a cappy.
This caught my eye I was hoping there were some answers in here lol

Your best bet would be to read over the Q&A section and see what they say. No one will be able to tell you if you will like it more or less then your captivate. Should make your own mind up with research.

Should I get a Thrill?

I currently have an HTC HD7S but being a tech head, I'm getting bored.
Is it worth getting the Thrill or is its already dead in the custom rom area?
Not dead, but calm. In actuality, though, there's been a jumpstart in posting the last couple days and a few have been promising to me. Additionally, GB is now scheduled to be released the 27th for the optimus 3d which should give the thrill a custom gb rom in days by that point. I'm days away from my trade deadline, but I'm staying pretty devoted to the phone I've decided I love. Now if only we could get a stock browser without this damn toolbar at the bottom...

I just picked mine up last Friday. I'm coming off an Atrix, and so far I'm not looking back.
The screen is fantastic, the phone is smooth, and it doesn't seem to have some of the issues the Attic suffers from.
It was between this and the Galaxy S II, and I wanted the HDMI. Also, the Thrill felt better.
Besides gimmick or not, the 3D is cool.

Thanks for the opinions. A family member of my has it and I've had the pleasure of using it. But I'm pretty much set on getting it.
Also, I was reading yesterday the ICS source code is released. Any devs interested in that?
EDIT: Honeycomb is available as well
I was going to say I don't know if I had an upgrade right now if it would be the phone I'd pick. I'd more than likely get a Note. But I've come to really like this phone and wouldn't trade it unless a Thrill with a 4.5 inch screen, 16 gig storage, and ICS came out.
Of course, then it'd still be a Thrill

Hmmmm...I downloaded xScope pro when it was the Amazon free app of the day. But I have yet to use it as my browser. Guess it's time to give it a shot.
IMO, I wouldn't waste my time on the Thrill. I stuck it out for a while thinking that LG actually gave a crap about us, just to be let down. They have committed to a Gingerbread release on the 21st to the International version. No commitment at all to the Thrill other than maybe by the end of December or early January.
With the very slow development going on it, I decided I had enough and jumped to the SGS2 Skyrocket instead. Do I miss the 3D ability?.....Of course. But I gained LTE (when available in my area) and an 8MP camera instead with increased speed over the Thrill and a lot more dev potential (and is going on already).
I would have a hard time now recommending anyone to the Thrill that cares about overall speed and performance, let alone support from the manufacturer. If someone wants 3D and doesn't mind a luke warm device, then the Thrill may suit them fine.
Just my opinion. I had such high hopes for it when I bought it.

Seriously, some people forget it's a phone. Without fast development, it's still a damn good one for now, and with development, it'll be amazing in the future. How many MP my camera is, I couldn't care less. It's more about the size of the cmos sensor than the resolution, and the only phone I'll trade for when it's available, nexus of course, will have one nice 5mp cam. Samsung let me down for way too long with my craptivate, so I can wait a bit for GB again. As for the O3D version, that'll be close enough. Oh, by the time LTE reaches my house (and most), I'm sure I'll be eligable for another upgrade. Loving this phone, despite my few hates.

Ask yourself this question: Do I want ROM selection? The answer to the title of this thread is the opposite of your answer to that question.
If you don't flash ROMs, the Thrill is better than the Atrix or Atrix 2, its definately the best phone in the <$99 price range. But for a little more the GS II (i777 not skyrocket, the skyrocket will be only slightly less of a ghost town than here) is teasing you with so many ROM choices it will burn a hole in your SD card.

The funny thing is Ive got all the bugs worked out of my Thrill. The thing has ZERO issues for me. I cant think of a single reason not to recommend the Thrill. I could care less about a selection of Roms. Most are just re-themes of the same..exact..thing. All I need is one solid rom and Im golden. That was the thing I LOVED about my Aria. For the longest time there were only 2-3 roms available for it but they were all rock solid and offered everything you could get out of a rom. We had ONE kernel available to us, but it worked flawlessly, so we didnt need anymore kernels. Move along to the Captivate and while I had 200,000 roms to choose from none of them felt finished, half of them were the same rom I had just flashed with a different battery icon, and they all had issues. Even CM7 for the Captivate never felt as solid as it did on my Aria. I never ended up being happy with my Captivate even though it was the "superior "phone to my Aria.
The Thrill is a solid phone. It had a lot of issues upon release and a LOT of people didnt stick around because of that. Gingerbread is here, and from what ive been hearing its already made the Thrill into even more of a beast and its only a pre-release leak (unfortunately I dont have a Windows machine so I cant flash the baseband to even try it ). And with the ICS source released we will have ICS fairly quickly. Gingerbread was a tough port due to ZERO Omap4 devices running it (it wasnt just the Thrill) so we had to try to start from scratch, but the first ICS device has almost the exact CPU (higher clockspeed and better imaging capabilities) and the GPU IS the same. That alone will kickstart development of ICS as we can port ICS rather than try to build it from scratch.
But enough of my ranting Im going to sleep!

Ok, so how come everytime we get a new device we complain about everything. Screen, battery, gps, and everything else! It's getting old. No device is going to be perfect! Come on we have a kick ass device! The Galaxy S2 is awesome. Tired of all the bashing and complaining going on in the forums. can't we just enjoy our awesome device and the awesome Roms and support the devs give us? Nope because we are spoiled!

But like op said every device isnt perfect and i had just about every device. This gs2 is by far the sweetest phone i owned to date i still think my next device will prolly be a nexus device or the s3 if its sick enough. But yea man i love my phone its super fast and reliable. It was also the first device where i thought the stock rom was half decent. I am definitely enjoying this device and will for a good while with or without ics. Even tho that would be a sweet addition to our roms

With out a doubt the Samsung Galaxy S II is the #1 phone in the world for 2011-current. Some other phones have other features or other small features that make them better in some aspects, such as the Galaxy Nexus screen. Other wise the SGSII is uncontested in every aspect and in sales.
CONS: Now, not by choice I own the T-Mobile SGSII which is another story all together. Yes, T-Mobile and Samsung changed a few features on this device to make it unique to T-Mobile. Whether good or bad it is very clear that the SGSII for TMO has a decrease in screen resolution, CPU and GPU Graphics performance. Other people have complained about lines and blobs on there screen, which I am fortunately enough not to experience on my device. But the worse part of the TMO version is the design......because Apple had to be a B*%^& and sue Samsung over this device we lost the three main button/keys from the original UK version. I like real buttons and would have loved to have a real home button and a back and menu button, ps who actually uses the search button?...worthless! The only other thing I would change would have been to have waited for the white one to come out before buying.
PROS: Personally I don't see much of a decrease in the screen resolution at all, I LOVE IT, and love the size to! The speed of the phone when at its best is amazing (have yet to root my phone and over clock it so I expect to to be even better soon when I do). Until we get ICS I am very content with the Go Launcher ICS theme which is easy to customize.
Over all even with my small simple complaints this is by far the best phone I have even own and still think no other phone on the market competes.

Skyrocket has the same issue as well
I thought that the skyrocket and our phone were the exact same device. Wasn't it just discovered that ours supports LTE as well? Whats the differences?
The difference is the processor (Qualcomm vs. Exynos), and the screen itself (4.5" vs. 4.3"). Sadly, our 4.5" screen is the one with the blobs/lines.
This really isn't the carrier's fault, but if they are refusing you a refund/exchange then it is.
huh, so are the blobs/lines caused by something or over time? Or do some devices just have them?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy laggy and unresponsive. How can I fix it? (4 options- see below)

Hi gang.
First off an apology if some of this/ all of this has been heard before. I spent all morning trawling forums and the internet in an attempt to fix the problems, but none seem to be anything I can deal with without getting some guidance from people in the know beforehand.
I have had my Galaxy tab GT-P1010 for a couple of years now and been very happy. It was origionally running Froyo, which is what the models ship with. Foolishly I presumed any updates from Samsung would be a benefit to the tab. The device is now rather clunky. Scrolling is slow and sluggish, programs crash without warning and the latest trick is that dialogue boxes are non-responsive (i.e. 'your phone will shut down: ok, cancel' does nothing when I press either option. Repeatedly. In rage.) The only option I have now for shutting down is to let the battery bleed out or hold the power key to switch off. I've tried things like factory reset, but even after reset, I'm still left with stupid old gingerbread.
Looking around there seem to be some options, but after reading through several times, I still have no clue. I understand that part of the problem is samsungs 'bloatware', of which there is plenty.
I'm not really sure how to go about it- I understand there are programs out there- Odin, Nandroid etc, but I'm a little lost on the lingo, and a little reluctant to go poking around without any decent knowledge.
Can anyone help? Or is this really a 'send it back to smasung job? It looks like I'm faced with these options:
1) somehow backdate from Gingerbread to Froyo
2) Strip out the samsung OS and install another launcher (which sounds like a can of worms to me)
3) send it back to Samsung and never EVER touch another one of their stinking updates.
4) another straightforward option that I haven't considered
Please help! (bear in mind I'm a total code-tard)
Return to froyo if that is the state where you are most comfortable with.
Another option would be, buy a new tab with better specs.

Actually, the best solution is to UPgrade, not downgrade. There are many decent guides out there for modding your Galaxy Tab and flashing a custom ROM. Personally I've found that the stock Android ROMs (the device's OS, so to speak), particularly the older ones, are very slow in and of themselves. If you want, I can guide you through the process, PM me if you feel like it. Or you can PM a veteran like priyana, he has the biggest Thanks Meter I've seen so far on this end of the forums.
Modding your system, from personal experience gives you a major performance boost. You should first try this alternative before thinking about buying another device.
I scan the forum often, and thanks for the good words, geno,
But I don't know much beyond P1000 model.
But there are a few threads for P1010 that seems solid and has good followers.

You deserve them man. Anyway, how different is the P1010 from the P1000? My own model, the NTT DoCoMo SC-01C, is actually nothing more than a rebranded P1000. Surely the operations can't be all that different for another model of the Galaxy Tab line. Does the Overcome kernel and ROM, for example, flash on other models or is it exclusively for the P1000?
EDIT: To the op, I actually did some looking around and found that the P1010 is something of a black sheep in the Galaxy Tab line. There are few, if any, custom ROMs for it, but there were a few threads that describe tweaks for performance and other things. They are the following:
Galaxy Tab GT-P1010 (WiFi Only) NooB Guide (you've probably already seen this)(you should also check the Thread Consolidation post somewhere there)
This thread shows some promise for CyanogenMod on your device, but it seems to have dropped off.
This thread might help you with your lag problem, as it (supposedly) brings you to the latest Gingerbread build.
In summary, though, it looks like I spoke too soon. There may, in fact, not be a better alternative than simply getting a new device. The Nexus 7 is currently hailed as one of the best Android tablets out there, and I find that it's pretty reasonably priced at $199 or so.
The open nature of Android is one of the reasons I love it so much, but if you can't do much with your particular device then you're not getting the most out of what Android has to offer. If I were in your shoes I'd probably switch if I had the money for it.
Anyway, that's the best I can do. Good luck with your device, man. If you ever decide to try tweaking it and/or need to ask some questions about the applications involved and other terms and such, priyana should be able to help you.

Apparently the hardware is quite different. Your SC-01 is still quite close.
The heart of the ROM is the kernel and if the hardware is different, the kernel is bound to be different.
Not many top devs looking at P1010, so I think not much poking into the kernel been done.
