Battery life worse after FRF83

Ive noticed a significant decrease in battery life ever since i updated my phone to FRF83. I can leave it on at 100% and it drains down to 75% or even lower the following morning. It usually drains no more than 10% if i leave it running overnight.
I dont have any apps running in the background, and my task killer is set to auto kill 3 mins after screen blankout. Auto refresh is, and has always been on since the day i got the phone though.
I manually updated to FRF85B and the battery life is still as bad as ever. Ive never gotten this problem with android 2.1 or any of the earlier froyo builds. Someone care to tell me whats wrong? Ive heard others reporting that their battery life has increased after updating to froyo, why am i getting the opposite?
I have this issue because of my exchange server.
Ive never set up and exchange server on my phone. The only constant apps that should be auto syncing are gmail, calander and twitter, which is set to refresh once every 1 hour.
Same for me, battery life sucks lately.

Then there are people reporting that their battery life has increased after updating to froyo. In fact mine was ok at first, until i started using FRF83 onwards then it all started to go downhill. This morning i woke up with the battery at 44% when i last saw it, it was at 90% the night before. It drained that much overnight and its not supposed to happen!
Mine was very good since updating to froyo ( starting from first builds leaked). Its very good now too, better than before anyway. I used to run of juice by 9PM, now i have ~ 20% left with the same usage.
Check out what apps are consuming the battery, i got terrible batt life when i tried the droidx live wallpaper.
App usage are the usual stuff.
Display being the highest, followed by android system, then cell standby, phone idle, twitter, android OS, launcher pro..etc
something seems to be sucking up my battery and i dont know what
I'll be the first one, I guess - I blame the task killer. It's widely known that you shouldn't need a task killer, unless you have some rogue app.

But if your task killer is set to auto-kill on screen-off, even if various apps restart then that should only be in the first few minutes and shouldn't reduce the battery that much.
I have taskiller installed but only for manual killing of problem apps (a rare occurrence) and I have noticed poor battery life since moving to FRF85b - didn't notice anything of the sort in the Froyo versions before 85b though.
Well i just uninstalled task killer, i'll leave the phone running overnight again to test the battery again. But from the looks of it. It seems battery life has improved slightly, but it could be just me.

Yeah thats true. It shouldnt suck up that much battery cos it only kills apps once. It could be an issue with the task killer causing it to drain the battery, because after uninstalling it i think the battery lasts a little longer. But i'll leave it running overnight again to confirm.
My quick story:
- frf72 and earlier - about 12 hours battery life for me. Used task killers, 2 emails on push. WiFi, BT off. Also tried juicedefender and setCPU. They made my battery life even worse.
- frf82+ (now frf91). Read up on how Android manages tasks and power. Got rid of all the task managers, setCPU and JD. Only use OSMonitor every once in a while to see if any dumbass app using up CPU in wakelock. So far none.
- EVERYTHING is ON. Wifi, BT, GPS - always on. I never use 2G, it's always 3G/HSDPA. GMAIL on PUSH, Exchange PUSH or 10minutes (no difference in battery for me)
- After a 24-hour test (from which 8 hours were on standby at night) I lost 80% battery life, so 20% still remain.
My advice: uninstall anything like setCPU, JD or taskkillers. Let Android handle that. Install OSMonitor and make sure nothing's in wakelock. Wipe cache if you want. If you're not getting 18-20+ hours, perhaps time to calibrate ur battery.
Thanks for the tip, just installled OSmonitor. The interface is pretty messy! But at least i understand whats going on. So all i need to do is keep track of which apps are at the highest load?
Is it really necessary to kill unwanted apps (Twitter, goggles, gmail..etc) because they are taking up RAM to improve battery life while idling?
OR you could just take Paul's advice and not use a task killer. My money is on him =)
FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android
Wow thats a very informative read! Thanks for the link. I too also thought that an unwanted running task means i need to kill it to free RAM in order to speed things up and improve battery life. Didnt know im actually doing it harm.
Looks like i'll ditch my task manager for good and have faith in the OS.
Using LauncherPro Beta? I think some battery issues have been traced back to the way LP is handling updating widgets right now. Hoping for an update to fix it soon.
Well guess what. I just used the phone for an entire day and left it on since last night. It dropped down to 25% when i got home and was about to replace the battery pack. So it looks like task manager was the cause of the problem.
Launcherpro doesnt seem to be affecting the battery life.

Well it won't show up in the battery usage as affecting the battery. It has something to do with the widget updating not launcherpro. I removed BBC News, Beautiful Widgets and my Battery Info widget and my battery is now holding steady.
I'd be interested if you'd run an experiment, remove all updating widgets, notification widgets, etc and try again.

[Q] Something drains my Battery - need help to find out what please

I need some help to find out what drains my damn battery so fast =(...
My phones battery usually drops in less than one day and I noticed that in the Battery History the "Execute Time" listing sometimes rises while the phone should be in sleep mode with the screen off. This is probably caused by an app or widget I guess. Or could wifi on also cause this? I've set the wifi sleep policy to sleep when screen is off so that shouldnt be the problem, and this also occurs with wifi off.
My Firmware is Doc's Froyo JPO with hardcore kernel (K2.2 200hz)
I have no rfs advanced ext4 lagfix and the tweaks enabled.
On the phone I use the following apps/widgets:
LauncherPro v0.8.1.1
Jorte (plus widget)
Fancy Widget 1.3.0 (auto-updates disabled, old version for the sense look)
Droid Wall (blocked alot of apps which load ads)
Fruit Ninja (blocked internet access with droid wall)
Root Explorer
ES File Manager
and a few more which I havent been using lately so they cannot cause this either.

The thing is:
When I restart the system, the execute-leak doesnt occur anymore. It starts at like 90% right after start (meaning 90% of the time the phone was on there was something running) .. but when i turn off screen and let it lie for about 5 minutes it goes down pretty fast.. so nothing is running then. But after using the phone a bit.. the leak occurs and the execution time rises and rises..
Of those apps I mentioned, are there any known to cause excessive battery drain? My guess is fancy widget.. ill try it out without it.. well I already did but the results were not clear yet.. the leak still occured with fancy widget deinstalled (but i think i didnt restart system afterwards).
Or: How can I find out exactly what is running still on the phone while the screen is off? Would logcat show this?
Hope someone can help me please, this is really a big problem for me atm if the phone doesnt even last one day.
Anyone know how you can get battery usage PER APP as my battery is dying within 4 hour in standby with "nothing" running so I want to ascertain the little ****er doing it...?
I would also appreciate any help!
Matt
Hmmm .. it seems that Fruit Ninja is causing this problem somehow... but I have to investigate further.
After I play Fruit Ninja the execution time keeps rising even after i exit game and "mediaserver" is showing in the cpu usage statistics and keeps rising.
Maybe its because I put it on the SD, but I tried out another game before and this also lies on the sd.
I will investigate further. While Fancy widget might still drain battery its definetely not the thing that causes execution time to rise when the screen is off.
Ohh I just browsed the web and searched about fruit ninja and mediaserver.. some other users report that.
It seems mediaserver isnt properly closed when the prog exits.. but how can i kill the mediaserver it doesnt apper in tasks
Man I hate replying to my own threads.. but it defenitely is mediaserver.
Now I can only fix it if I restart the phone it seems.
How can I end/kill/restart that damn process? I tried killing it in the terminal but ps still shows it and its still taking cpu time.
kill -9 mediaserver
kill -9 /system/bin/mediaserver
kill -9 android.process.media

all didnt work so far it seems.. someone has to know a way to kill that process or fix that problem.. please guys. It will probably help alot of people since that mediaserver "bug" of taking so much cpu power seems to hit quite a few people.
Hi, I've the same problem, after exiting fruit ninja, mediaserver eats a lot of cpu. I've to run script with "killall mediaserver".
This is really bad that some applicaiton hangs this process. I'm on android 2.2.1 JPY (darkys).
same problem on insanity rom
even rebooting my phone can't stop this
is this a problem with the kernel, rom or the game?
Its funny, there called smart phones, but yet we have to manually and frustratingly
close apps ourselfs, sometimes I wonder that these smart phones are really DUMB!
I do love my SGS, but it has pissed me right the feck off so many times it aint funny, I think maybe if the SGS was released a few months later so Samsung could polish it up to what it can REALLY do, it would be worth the €500...rant finished...

[Q] Background Apps and Battery Drain

Hi,
I have noticed on my SGS that there are always 10-12 background apps that are running... Although I have Advanced Task Killer installed... And also there is significant drain in the battery as well... I loose 3-4% in one hour (when the phone is idle)...
Is this normal ?
Is there any way to avoid the background apps to start automatically? Does these apps drain the battery?
Also, I am using Launcher Pro... Whether it can be the reason for the drain in the battery?
Is there anyway to reduce the battery drain?
P.S: The phone is rooted...
Thanks,
Guru
Samsung Galaxy S
Android 2.2
BaseBand: I9000DDJP2
Build: Froyo.DDJP6
stop using task killers.
3-4% isn't unusual, but task killers will make it worse.
Hmm... I have the same problem with Doc's Rom XWJS3+speedmod kernel.
Somethimes I get 2%/hour battery drain (which is normal for me) and other times I get mad 5%/hour battery drains.
When I got the 5%/h battery drain I checked Spare Parts, but it didn't show nothing unusual.
And I know Spare Parts and the usual suspects: Gallery 3D, Dialer, Fruit Ninja,...
Thx god phone reboot fixes the mad battery drain.
Too bad this isn't fixable because no app shows high battery usage in Spare Parts.
EDIT: I do not use Task Killers and yes I would also not recommend using them.
Thanks guys for the replies... I have disabled Advanced Task killer and now monitoring the battery drain...
Also, any idea if Launcher Pro consumes battery as well? Since I have kept it as my default launcher...
Thanks,
Guru
Yes I guess we are all in the same boat.
When I clear level 1 and 2 memory in the task manager, I get a note that 10+ apps have been stopped but I believe this is not the right thing to do.
Android OS seem to work this way.
I need to do some reading about it.
Can someone explain what are the disadvantages of using advanced task managers?
the stock task manager is fine.. its the other ones from the market that contribute to battery drain,, even tho they are made to decrease battery drain.... weird i know...
they are permanently checking the OS for running apps, and certain options like 'show notification message' or 'auto kill at screen off' means the app is running permanently.... even when you kill it. it just starts back up in a blink of an eye...
stick to the stock task killer as its no better / worse than the rest......

[Q] Any battery saving tips?

I turn off: auto-rotation, auto-backup, synchronize, data in the background, gps, disabled fast darmancy, no live wallpaper, auto britnes, at home i turn off mobile data, and when i go out i turn of my notification, im using super task killer to kill all the proces, but my not battery life is obout 18 hours with verry low ussage. Im using latest kingdroid rom with abys 4.2 kernel, when i try to install francos kernel o r speedmode kernel i get problem with screen, just goes off, any tips to save battery live ??
take a look at my post in here:

Short answer: you'll find juicedefender will go a long way to saving your battery.
Some of the things you've set (disabling auto-rotate, using task killers) won't do anything to help your battery life.
As a general rule task killers aren't necessary under android - they may even HURT your battery life. If an app wants to run it will simply restart itself, using cpu cycles to run, then your task killer will kill it, and the cycle repeats itself. If an app is really causing a problem, just uninstall it.

I agree with the second part of the above post, but juice defender will NOT save your battery. In fact it might do just the opposite. Do some forum search and you'll see for yourself.

I can confirm it myself.
Thought I'd jump in to this thread to add that I'm a user of juicedefender ultimate, and, properly set up, it makes a huge difference to my battery. Ymmv I suppose.

[Q] Need help

i have problem
when i make call and end the call
i found in task manger phone file open (green phone icon)
and its not closed
i found that it take alot of battery
so i have to make end task every time after i finsh incomming or outgoing calls
anyone have a solution??
its meant to be like that!
it is meant to be like that, the phone keeps the app in memory to decrease time it takes to open it the next time, mostly useful for those who make a lot of calls. apps might be closed imidiately depending on memory- and cpu usage, try using the "back" button instead of "home" and see if that works
It's not the "phone app" that kills battery, it's you making calls, and that is sorted to "phone" by the battery monitor. Just leave the dialer open, it doesn't matter.

You can do like I do... I place the Task Manager shortcut in the main screen and everytime a finish a call or some other task I just open it and click on Stop.
Its a matter of get use with that, takes 2 seconds and don't hurt no one... Or you can try to find some app to do that and loose the battery for that app.

The battery needs some charging cycles to get to its full capacity. Did yo uhae any difference with closing the dialer app? Because I don't think it will do any difference. It's the same with RAM, a typical failure is to think that it has to be empty, but it is handled different and therefore it doesn't matter for the phones speed if it is full or empty. That dialer app stays open, so what? And it is pretty normal that calling takes more battery than wi-fi. Mobile data also takes more battery than wi-fi. And when making calls you have a permanent active mobile connection. There is a reason that companys always print two battery times, one standby and one calling.
Don't panic, get used to it. I don't think your battery life will increase. Only possibility for that is to flash the latest software and disable some of LGs stuff, e.g. Smartworld app.
Use task killer and will stop any program that run as standby , also, I would like to advice LG 4X users to use Battery saver to save more BATTERY LIFE. I have installed one and test it. It really make my device super and extend the battery life.

This is the worst hint you can give. Everyone who has owned an Android device for quite a time will know that taskkillers are among the most unuseful programs you can get, because they'll randomly kill apps and make the system unstable. Once again: It doesn't matter how many apps are open! Your RAM will always be freed. This is not Windows! And for battery usage it is only important if apps running in background keep the phone from deep sleep, and that's the minority of programs. And for those which keep the phone awake, it's mostly intended, like mail apps that poll the mail server every half an hour. Get yourself some information about how Android works, it helps a lot.
If you want to know about wakelocks, use the "BetterBatteryStats" app. It can be found somewhere on xda for free (older version) or for a small fee on the Play Store.
wpa_supplicant ad-hoc
need a "wpa_supplicant" make ad-hoc to may laptop....
I don't think killing the Phone app will make much of a difference, have you tried exploring other power saving methods? personally I find changing governer settings on screen off saves me quite a bit
