On-live - Off-topic

I don't know if any of you all have heard of this or not. Theirs this company that uses cloud gaming to let you play games on your computer (no matter the specs). All you need is good internet speed. It even streams games to your smartphone. I was playing dirt 3 with almost no lag on my galaxy s. They have a pretty decent library of current Gen games. The way it ran on my PC was impressive but the way it ran on my phone was amazing.
Its called "onlive". Just Google it.

I mucked around with OnLive back during beta, it was definitely neat -- but (at the time) the lag was unbearable. It's nice to hear it's gotten (getting?) better, though. It really is a fantastic concept..

I just started with it. I rented arkham city for 3 days for 6 dollars. I don't have that great of a PC. Dual core 2.4 ghz. The computer was bought in like 2005. But I have a good net speed. 40 to 50 mbps. I have had flawless gameplay the whole time I've been playing. If it had a bigger library it would knock GameFly out the park.
P.s. not all games are rentable. Some you have to buy at retail price and you can't play it anywhere else other than onlive.

I have a hard time with idea of paying full price for a game that I can't "keep"....

as long as you have your onlive account you have it.......... and you can play it virtually everywhere you can download the client. OR you could carry a backpack full of your favorite games and install / update everywhere ;0)

I never pay full price for games even if I get the disk. I rent or borrow them. I'm essentially using this service for games that can be beat in a short amount of time. I beat arkham city in about 2 days with some side quests. This service will get better over time.
By the way they offer great offers. During the the week of Thanksgiving they were offering either arkham city, revelations, or saints row 3 for one dollar to "own" on onlive. Also I think you get Lego Batman for free when you sign up

So don't pay full price, OnLive constantly has really good sales and giveaways. I have 17 games with them and have paid a total of about $115. Half of them were free, Deus-Ex HR Augmented Ed. was 90 cents and came with the original Deus Ex. The only game I paid full price for was Homefront and that's because it came with their game console for my TV plus Metro 2033.

been using onlive through my galaxy s2. very nice ui. games work nicely too.
.

have had an account since launch.... add me: shoot_him-not_me

Onlive would be great with full HDMI mirroring.

No, and its not the fact that i dont like 3d its cause i can see people getting sick while playing in a car

I would if it didn't cost $250, and didn't have terrible battery life.
Sure im thinking of getting one, but only because i heard that there's gonna be a super smash bros 3D...
Solid snake also looks ok
And imagine the developmental possibilitys, it actually has decent specs.
SSB on DS would be awesome, but as others have stated, I cannot afford to pay $250 for the system then more for each game.

Nook Color rooted or iPad for my kid?

Hey all,
I haven't had any experience with the Nook, but I'm in the market for a simple tablet that has some apps for kids, as well as the ability for me to put movies on it. I can either buy an iPad which is more expensive but definitely does what I want, or I can get the Nook and hook that up in the car.
My son is almost 2 years old, and we take a lot of day trips so I want something to occupy his time while we're driving. Either he can watch a movie, or play games, or whatever... I'm open for ideas. I have two kids, so ultimately this will be needed for both kids; either to watch movies or play games, and I will probably mount it off of the headrest.
Thanks for any ideas folks, I'm open for anything, just want to know if I'm wasting my time looking at the Nook for my kids (when it's rooted) or if I should just save a few bucks more and get the iPad.
Thanks!
I'd say get the ipad even though I hate apple. I say get the ipad because of the many games found in the app store and the simplicity of playing on it out of the box. ITunes is relatively easy to use and to put music/movies on it. Even though you'll have to pay for them unless you find other methods. I say don't choose the nook because it is an e reader. Although xda has made the nook pretty much into a tablet, the ipad will out perform the nook in almost every way. Also the ipad 2 has cameras which your kids im sure would enjoy. The ipad is easier to use for younger kids or maybe just in general. Hope this helps

My son just turned 4 and does fine playing Angry Birds or Monkey Kick Off and watching videos on the Nook while in his carseat. I know you said you were going to mount it on the headrest, but one thing to note is that the Ipad might be a little big if your 2-year old needs to balance it in his lap while playing touchscreen games or needs to pick it up to use the accelerometer. On the other hand, there are a couple great games on the Apple store that haven't made it to the Android Market (my son loves a certain monster truck game on his mom's Ipod) yet but I don't think this is a big drawback since there are already a lot of others to pick from and they'll eventually make their way over.
If I had to buy two that might end up gettting knocked around and dropped on the car floor, I'd definitely get a pair of Nooks.
2 year old ipad would be a bit big, get him a itouch instead
The only reason I would say no to the iPad is because for a two year old a 9 in screen might be to big. You might want to look for another tablet that is 7in but has a less restrictive OS. Archos Dell creative Samsung and others all have 7 in tablets

Your wallet will thank you, if you get the Nook Color.
Your kid will thank you, if you get the iPad.
I would go with the iPad, unless your kid is into Android and tweaking things... xD

I would not give a 2 year old a $200 or a $400 toy. I have nightmare visions of said kid smashing said toy.
Now that we have the Nook Color I recently went looking for educational apps for Android -- DAMN there are slim pickings!
And I wasn't even limiting myself to "tablet-ready" apps.
You'll really have to get the iPad (or iPad Touch as suggested above).
Unless... hmm, I wonder if ordinary Linux game / educational apps run in Android; a few of those are decent.
Another vote for iPad. The kids app selection is better, but here are two other reasons why:
- the kids apps for android tend to be free and ad driven, free is good but ads are bad because...
- the android market STILL does not require a password to purchase apps.
I cannot tell you the number of times my daughters have accidentally hit an ad in a game and then ended up buying the linked app while pressing buttons trying to get back to the game they were playing. Now with the added Google penalty of 15 minute refunds there is a huge possibility of getting screwed. One of my daughters bought LogMeIn for 29.99 and I couldnt get a refund!
Yes, you can root and use an ad blocking app and you can use yet another app to password protect the market app - it is still an issue to the point where I have to constantly check to make sure they are still in their game or book. The iPhone and iPad do not present this issue because they require a password to make purchases - novel idea.
i'd say IPAD... but thats kind of a pricey "toy" for a little toddler isnt it?
that said, the children's books in full color and voice narratives on nook app is really neat.
Both are somewhat delicate and I'd be concerned about letting a 2 year old hold either unsupervised. iPad is beautiful and intuitive though with a number of kid friendly apps. Again - I'm assuming an adult will be keeping an eye on things. This should be mom's or dad's ipad that the kid uses under supervision.
When my son was 2 years old his fingers were endlessly messy - saliva, food, dirt, etc. Get a screen protector.
I think this is too much for a 2 year old on their own - I doubt they will appreciate this over a lot of simpler toys or distractions. If I were to spend the money on a 2 year old - I'd put it in a college fund, or set aside for some activities to spend time together as a family. Playing with mom or dad's ipad occasionally makes more sense to me.
Restricting the use to a back seat video player might work - no touching.

2 is a bit young for a device like that. I did give mine a DSi when he was 2. It still works fine and he's 4 now.

Funny, i was thinking something like this as well. Frankly, for a 2 year old, neither device. A 2 year old will have no problem smashing either, and that even goes for when you think it might be safely mounted in a car mount.
I'd buy a kid that young a Leapster 2 instead of a touch device. All of the games are educational and my kids have loved playing it from ages 2.5 - 7. My 7 year old likes his Nintendo DS more now, for obvious reasons. The tablets aren't much use to someone who can't read. You have to show them and they have to memorize all the buttons to hit. I try and let my kid play games on my phone and the next thing I know he is launching apps all over the place.
The nook is a little bit more complicated to get around on than a typical tablet because of the setup, unless you put CM7 or Froyo on it. Just rooting the basic OS, while the most stable, is a little confusing to navigate, especially if you aren't using Soft Keys.
I'd probably recommend getting one of the Samsung touch devices if you want to stick with Android.
Also, you might base your decision on the number of apps available for you. There isn't much point in buying device A if all the apps you want only run on device B.
I have both an ipad and nook color. they both have their pros and cons.
the nook is cheaper and has a smaller screen. i find it great for carrying around with me either by hand or in my laptop bag. video playback is not 100% on any of the custom roms.
ipads are coming down in price. larger screen. not too convenient to carry around. video playback is 100%.
I would give my vote for the ipad, just because there's so much more educational stuff for it. I have both and the ipad is in an otterbox commuter case to help keep it from getting trashed by the little ones. I would be worried about the nook in any of the cases available right now.
I have a 1.5 year old niece. I've let her play with my NC before, but always, always, always supervised. Love that kid to death, but if she busted my Nook I would kill her. My other niece is 5. She plays with my Nook every once in a while basically unsupervised. I'm not worried about her throwing it or rubbing grimy fingers all over it like her younger sister might.

Really, boingboingbilly? That's terrible. But if there are locking apps available, are you saying they don't really work?
It's like they permanently deployed Amazon One-Click buying?
I guess that's an argument against enabling the Market at all! Or using it with a very low balance disposable credit card number...
Another vote for a more age appropriate device like the Leapster 2. Or maybe just a DVD player. Something much sturdier than an iPad or a Nook.
Plus, if you are buying your 2 year old a $500 plus gadget what is he going to be demanding when he's 12?.

[Q] To get an IPad or not...

I need some opinions on this topic: should I get an IPad or not.
A bit of background about me
- I am an Android user (Galaxy S)
- I do not own any nor have I ever owned an Apple device
- I would never want an Iphone
- I really want a tablet
- I live in South Africa where the ipad 2 is getting released tomorrow
- Except for the Samsung Tab P1000 there are no Android tablets available here yet
- We generally only receive devices 3-6 months after the US, so no Galaxy 10.1 until later this year
- Importing is generally not an option as this would push the price way too high
My options are:
- Buy an Ipad 2 tomorrow, sell it once the droids hit the shelves here
- Wait until June when a friend of mine travels to Europe and brings me back a XOOM for Galaxy 10.1 (if they are released by then...)
My Concerns:
- Apple sucks
- No Jailbreak for Ipad 2 as of yet
- Apple Apps are damn expensive, $9.95 for pages?!?!
- All other restrictions that come with the Ipad (yes, I know them all...)
- Resell value of the ipad 2
- No native divx/avi - COME ON!!!
What I need it for:
- browsing
- videos
- music
- reading books
Despite all this I cannot help feel that I someone want the ipad, maybe its the looks? I just really want a tablet... Now, what would YOU do?
You could get the transformer.
-10 post limit for off-topic!-
If you're wanting to sell it when Droids hit the shelves then I'd say don't buy, It's an awful lot of money to spend on something which you do not particularly want, also if your views are 'Apple Sucks' I wouldn't reccomend it at all Although a good tablet none the less.

I really want a tablet . I agree, it is a lot of money but the iPads seem to have an excellent resell value in this country. Maybe knock of 15% in 4 or 5 months. The supply is so small compared to the demand.

Possibly. Customs can be a real ***** though. Bought my Galaxy S from overseas (I think I was the first to own one locally) but it cost me an arm and a leg.
I would buy the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a heartbeat but who knows about the release date of a 3G version. Xoom is awesome but expensive for the 3G version $$$. Plus, I am not a fan of the looks.
My fears with the iPad 2 are
- no native video playback of divx/avi and I have no nerve to convert videos every time. Not sure if players like Azul work well. VLC has been pulled of the market and since there is no jailbreak as of yet it can't be installed
- No flash
- No tab browsing, not sure if there is a DECENT browser that can sort this out
- Document editing - I refuse to pay $9.95 each for pages and numbers and google docs doesn't seem to be a real solution either
- Just transferring files, I have this feeling that I will throw the thing out the window once I realise that I cannot save an email attachment and open it in different apps (please correct me here!!!)

Got the iPad. I must say, owning a tablet is great and the screen, design and built quality of the iPad 2 is really excellent. The rest, well, it sucks. Its a great device for browsing, reading and news apps but the rest sucks. After a few days with the device I can now appreciate just how far ahead Android is.
Anyway, still was a good decision to buy as I got the experience and they ran out of stock a few days after lauch. Selling it this week, at a 25% profit

Ever thought of the Archos Internet Tablet 101?
I really like Archos

Will this be suitable for a 8 yr old?

Hi Guys
Im looking for a 'basic' tablet for my 8 yr old daughter for Christmas and I like the idea of the Streak 7. I appreciate that the screen resolution is not ideal for a 7" ...but will an 8 yr old care? I dont think so! Can you also tell me how good the wifi connection is.
I just need to know how well it plays Angry birds,Moshie Monster,Lego Universe and all the other kiddie games that kids adore.
Can someone give an honest opinion of its suitability. I have looked at loads of generic chinese tabs but too many of them get poor reviews.
Having had 3 dell computers which have served me well, Im once more heading in their direction.
Hopefully the streak will tick all my boxes so that my daughter will leave my Galaxy S2 alone. Thanks for your help
Regards
Julie
For productivity work, moving from Android 2.x to 3.x is like night and day, it's simply leaps and bounds ahead of froyo/gingerbread, but that's not what you're interested in. The screen on it isnt amazing, but it's not flat out terrible. But I really doubt you'd be able to find a better screen on a cheaper device.
Keep in mind that many of the super cheap tabs wont ever be updated/do not have market access. Even if there are many other alternative markets the android one is still by far the biggest/most important.
There are some games that are not compatable with the s7 with honeycomb installed, but the list is slowly shrinking as developers are making it compatable.
The S7's also one of the fastest (but not THE fastest) 7" tabs you can buy, and black friday is coming up and best buy (if you live in the USA) will be selling it with a black friday discount. If you buy it then it's nearly the same price as those cheap tabs you can buy.
Snag a S7 at $200 or cheaper and you'll be really hard pressed to find something to dislike about it, there's simply nothing that can compete with it at such a low price point. The closest would be the gtab 7, but even then it's still nearly $300.

I take it up stairs and watch movies, skype, etc... no interruptions.

Is this for a 32GB or 16GB? Overall, I think that's still going to be a decent price for either (much better deal for 32GB obviously). If you look forward to putting in the time to install CM11, troubleshoot when necessary, and just want something to experiment with - definitely do it. Has no problems with videos, can't say much about 3D games.

Unequivocally yes! For the cost its one of the best options on a budget. Games run well just take a look at my gaming videos, most of them are on the HP Touchpad. However the screen res is only 1024 x 768 so your HD videos will be cropped, get the Mx video player.

Unequivocally yes! For the cost its one of the best options on a budget. Games run well just take a look at my gaming videos, most of them are on the HP Touchpad. However the screen res is only 1024 x 768 so your HD videos will be cropped, get the Mx video player.

Try to get one with the HP Touchstone charger as that has brought mine back to life on several occasions and is a great stand.
