I've flashed my sgs to ics build 8. why GO SMS Pro can't find the name of person from contact? but built-in messaging can show the person's name. then in contact, there's no multi-select menu. so, to delete many contacts, I must delete it one by one. and I use asisten APN to add my provider's APN, but it failed to add. I hope all of this can be fixed in build 9

The GO SMS contacts problem was not a bug in the ROM, but the App's compatibility issue in Android 4.0
But you'll find its been fixed in the latest update!
Try GO SMS now, its all back to normal!

I've checked and already in go sms pro v4.01.but I'm now in stock rom XXJVX. I loved to use MIUI rom. but since I flashed the ICS, when I try restore the backup,it become bootloop. that's why I'm now in stock rom
SMS's contact = GO SMS Pro v4.01
Editable contact = GO Contact EX
Maybe that 2 apps will be good for that build

I've seen other people having this issue, but no fixes as of yet. Does anyone have a fix for this?
I updated my Captivate with the leaked Fugu kernel of Gingerbread. I thought everything was working fine, but it turns out that I'm not able to answer calls. When I get a call, the screen blacks out, and then the calls get forwarded to Voicemail. I can't answer the calls at all. Also, it kills any connection I have at that time, so 3G and the bars go away, and I get the circle with a line through it. Then after about 30 seconds, everything comes back, with four bars. Everything else seems to work fine, and I can make outgoing calls with no problem. Texts work great, MMS, and web.
Ideas??
Baseband: I897UCKF1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
Firmware: 2.3.3
Build: GINGERBREAD.UCKF1
If u want to stay on the leaked stock i897uckf1, then i suggest u flash designgears Cognition Beta 2 Kernel (it's rooted of course) and if that doesn't fix the issue, then reflash the KF1 modem (or i897 modem of ur choice.)

hey Teejeaux
I have been having the exact same problem. i did gingerbread with fugu also. i had started a thread here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168128 .... and bumped it three times but still no answer. maybe you will get lucky and someone will shine in that knows about the problem.
i am also wondering if the problem happens because we restored contacts and messages. Teejeaux did u restore any contacts and messages using TB or from the export feature in the contacts menu if so then that might be the problem. I restored contacts on both mine and my brothers captivate and we are having the same problem.
Good Luck
edit: stangri and killer_raj had responded but i had not noticed sorry.
edit: prbassplayer replied in my thread with a link to flash just gingerbread without bootloaders here. i would use the one that says "odin 3 file no bootloaders" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145149

and yes restoring data & apps from tibu is cause of forceclose and freeze and lot of times...
not all the time..and when u know what u r doing...so just see after the fresh install everythin works fine..then dont use tibu...
the best n the cleanest..safest way of restroing contats and sms..which i always use...
from contacts..import/export...and export to sd card..u wil hav just one vcf file..having all ur contacts in it..so u can even copy that to ur comp for future use....and restore later when u done flashin..
and smsbackup and restore app by ritesh sahu in market..its free..and it makes a backup on ur internal sd..so copy it to comp or to external sd after taking backup...later after install put that back on internal sd..and install app and restore ur sms...
and i dont use tibu to restore my apps..i always hav the apk's i use ..so i fresh install after the flash...or i download them again from market..so i never had any freeze/forceclose problem ..after any new rom flashin...
Simple troubleshooting:
If <ROM Version Here> starts acting funky (no calls, data, force closes etc..)
I would recommend flashing back to stock - I would also perform a factory reset on the device and even go so far as to format the SD Card (I know might be extreme but you know your phone is def wiped clean)
Re-flash the ROM and don't install/restore anything! Still having issues? Post it on the Q&A of <Insert Rom Name Here> forum or look to see if there is a known issue.
To me this sounds like a bad flash - or the modem didn't flash correctly.
TiBu isn't necessarily bad - but I don't try and use it to restore system data - only application backups/data as your less likely to have issues with force closing.
But... now days I have my app list paired down to just the actual apps I use - so its easier to restore the apps from the Market and restore my Angry Birds saved games
I want to use CyanogenMod on my N700 cause it's been bricked once and i don't want to take the chance again, I installed it and was impressed except for the contacts app, I dislike the change so much that I got rid of CyanogenMod. Is there a way to get rid of the CyanogenMod version contacts and put the original back?
Any advice appreciated

Depends what you mean by 'original' do you mean samsungs contact app? as the contact app in cyanogenmod is the 'original' ICS contact app (i.e the one from google) with extra modification and settings
I mean the one that comes with gb 2.3 or ics, the CyanogenMod is all white and totally different configuration
Hmmm... just realised that the contacts app itself does indeed have a white background, while accessing contacts through the phone app gives a black background.
What ROM are you on now? Did you wipe data, cache, and dalvik? I don't see how you would still have the CM9 contacts apk if you wiped data and went to a new ICS rom. You would have whatever contacts apk that ROM has.
I am on CriskeloRom ICS Note V6 LQ2 Base No WIPE but i seem to have a couple niggly little problems with it but that's beside the point. I have the normal contacts on this but because my phone has already been bricked I would like to go back to the Cyanogen as they are supposedly the only safe ones to easy my mind
I started out by trying to update my dads phone from 2.3.5 android on his i9000 I used odin to root and install the cwm I tried a kitkat rom first and it didnt work right so I had a bit of trouble anyway I have eventually managed to get hellybean 4.3 flashed and running fine..
Before flashing, I backed up his call logs his sms and his contacts with titanium pro. I thought I was safe to go and backed up.
Now I cant restore the contacts, I dont get any kind of fail, it says to reboot but still they are not there.
I also cant restore the sms messages, they are all there in the messaging app and I can see the messages and message count but when I click to see the full threads there is nothing there like I have never received a message from that number. Also when I send a text I cant see that one either only in the previous list that shows all messages.

Try this fix...
Hey, I assume that you tried restoring the old contact app and messaging app from stock 2.3.5 to your newer AOSP Rom. If so, it's most likely not gonna work this way with Titanium Backup. The apps from the stock rom are rely on TouchWiz that is used by Samsung on all stock roms. I'd try to flash back the old stock rom with root access, restore with Titanium Backup and back up again with another app, e.g. SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store. In addition, you can save your restored contacts to a google account or make a vcf that you can import on any AOSP based Rom. After doing this, you can flash back your Jelly Bean Rom. Just make sure to save your all backups to external SD everytime before flashing, so that you won't lose them by flashing over another Rom.

Ok that sounds plausible, where would I get the stock rom from? I was on 2.3.5 and it was bloated with orangeware I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I'm thankful for your input, hopefully I'll be able to get this sorted as the phone was so wasted on that old OS.
Many thanks.

You can find most Stock Roms on SAMMOBILE.com http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9000&pcode=-1#firmware.
Just enter your carrier/country in the list to find the right one. However, you have to register at this website to download them and the roms are not pre-rooted. You have to flash them with Odin. So maybe, for making this easier try to find a already rooted Stock Rom that matches your old version and is flashable zip for installing it via CWM Recovery.
Thanks again for your reply, I thought it was the phone that got rooted and all the roms were the same, I tried a stock one via ODIN last night and got stuck in a bootloop thats when I put my current rom on the device. So confused right now. I hope to learn quick though as this is my dads phone so I'd be happy with anything on it, I have the HTC One though that I'm hoping will be fantastic for customisations

Your welcome.
(PS.: Sometimes, your phone gets stuck in bootloop when flashing different android versions because the partition layout or the bootloader change between newer and older android versions. Then, its necessary to flash the same Rom twice.)

As you are coming from jelly bean so don't forget to use pit file with re-partition option clicked when flash via Odin
Hi, what is a pit file, I actually formatted the phone completely successfully installed the stock Rom with a stock Rom for Odin, and then rooted it again with Odin and a cf root file. Then I installed titanium pro again and got my data restored and backed everything up with super backup, installed MacKay 3.9.9, I had to reboot the phone and then go back in and install 4.3 gapps and then installed super backup again and my backups restored beautifully, nice clean Rom and running very smoothly fathers happy, I'm happy. Time to check out kitkat on my HTC One I think!!
Many thanks for your help @zegovernator your solution fixed my problem. Thank you I learnt a lot in this process.

pit stands for partition information table. It partitions your phone in accordance with stock gingerbread.
Where do you get pit files from do you use them together with the pda packs I use with Odin too?

Usually they come along with Odin. You might search it in folder where you unzipped the Odin software. For the Galaxy S I9000, there are only three pit files available...
512.pit, 513.pit and 803.pit ... This relates to their release date:
(2010-05-12 (12th of May 2010)
2010-05-13 (13th of May 2010)
2010-08-03 (3rd of August 2010))
Actually, it doesn't matter which one of these you flash with Odin. The difference is that there are a few small changes in the size of the two system partitions. But in all versions, both partitions add up to the same amount of storage on your device. Most commonly the 512.pit is used here in Forums.
Hi, used this site for a long time as a guest for info and registered as I have an odd problem I have been unable to resolve. A quick sequence of events. exact problem in bold
Phone updated to JB no problems in 2013.
Rooted using a file from Phil3759 (or something like that) no problems. Used it for about 6 months or so
All Super user installed etc etc, no issues with phone at all.
9 January. Not sure if I deleted something I shouldn't have and the contacts app continuously said "contacts list is updating please wait" nothing came of this.
The phone was running really slow so i thought i would do a factory reset anyhow. All proceeded without issue. Same problem persisted.
I did a "full unroot is SuperSU" or waterer the app is called and the problem still persists with the addition that the software updates no longer work AND it now says my phone is modified where it did not previously.
Fair enough, it is modified after all.
So now, every time I open either the Contacts app or the Phone app the device crashes completely and needs to reset. Everything else on the phone works fine, including the ability to download and install apps from the play store. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix it?
so far I have an essentially virgin device and i have not set up any accounts on it whatsoever, I have also no installed apps other than what the factory reset leaves you with. I also untucked all the sync options previously and tried clearing cache from the google apps i could identify
Am at a bit of a loose end. I can use contacts+ but would rather not.
Since you have root, the rom is now laggy and crashes, it is time to install a new rom. Back up your efs, contact and messages and important data, then go with a new rom. Titanim backup, super back up and hcktool are useful tool from gplay.
Sent from my phone.
you are blowing my mind there. What is an EFS? I have everything i need to back up, backed up. I already had Titanium but to be honest it wasn't worth a crap, it didn't even restore my contacts (which could be because there is a different problem) but as it failed me the only time i ever needed it, i was not impressed.
it did restore a lot of other things mind you, so it could be sour grapes!
i have a phil file, thats how I rooted it, or am i missing something?
this is my status at the moment
Android V. 4,1.2
baseband n7000xxlso
kernel 3.0.31-1103517
build jzo54.n7000xxlsz
I have a file called philz-cwm6-xxlt9-ora-5.08.5-signed.zip which is what i used to root. But the contacts issue and update issues still persist. On the phone app, as soon as any number is pressed it crashes to the point where the phone turns off now. everything else works perfectly well though.
Apologies if i have misunderstood what you are suggesting I do.
There are few issues here if you still want to fix rom rather than install new one.
The PhilZ kernel you use is different from the rom version. That could cause some issues. You should choose the correct PhilZ kernel from his thread in ori dev. About contact and phone app you can download a similar custom rom extract them and replace original.using root explorer. So this also sound complicated. Honestly you should try to learn how to install a custom rom for note. Not that difficult.

OK, will try a customer ROM, if it doesn't work i may go stock, i don't really need any advanced features tbh. My only query left then is my kernel which doesn't seem right. the kernel is listed as 3.0.31-1103517 [email protected] 162#3 SMP PREEMPT TUE JUN 4 20:55:52 KST 2013
that doesn't seem like the normal format. Im on 4.1.2 BB n7000XXLSO build JZO54K.N7000XXLSZ
any ideas? i have CWM installed and can get to it so as it stands I believe i only need to download the rom to an external SD and boot to recovery to flash? sound right? Not sure about that kernel though
The kernel you used is lt9 while rom is lsz. It still work but may also cause problem. So better use correct version for rom. Anyway, if you decide to install new rom you can try Sweet rom 10.5 black. It is fast and stable. Other 4.1 custom rom also good. Android thread. They are all there.

Hey all. Had this phone for a while. All of a sudden after a routine poweroff (cuz I was flying), it refuses to boot up and is stuck on the flashing samsung text. Running the official ICS rom. No flashes/hacks/anything exciting ever done with this phone.
After a few browses at the topics here, I found out that I can access recovery mode (vol up + home + power). It shows the following message:
#MANUAL MODE#

Can anyone help me out here?
First and foremost before you do anything flash a custom kernel which will stop the brick bug from happening:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
Once that is done, do a data wipe in recovery mode. If it doesn't boot then you will have to reflash (a custom ROM or using download mode to flash an official ROM).

Many thanks for the reply. Just a few questions before I jump into it though...does the custom kernel do anything else besides safeguard from bricking? (I'm referring to not being able to access google services and the like)
Next - if I do a data wipe, doesnt that mean that all the data (pics, contacts, sms) will go? Would there be a way to preserve these?
Sorry I do realize these are really green questions...never had a problem with this phone before and never tried experiementing

The custom kernel will stop the brick bug from happening and it will give you a custom recovery, If you have a custom recovery then you can flash other custom ROMs. You won't be limited in any way whatsoever.

I think that if you do it on the stock recovery (the one you have now) then it will remove everything: 3rd party apps, pictures, contacts, smses, settings etc. If however you do it on philz then it will remove your installed apps, settings, smses, contacs, call logs etc. BUT it will not remove all the files on your sd card (pictures and other files).

No problem, better to be safe and sure than having a bricked phone
Also, I read where the smses and call logs are stored (but not the contacts):
mmssms.db (messages and mms data bases)
telephony.db (this one contains call logs)
They are located in:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
You could use ADB or something simpler (if you have that custom recovery I linked earlier) - aroma file manager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108
Then you can copy those files to your sd card.
Also, chances are your contacts are on google: https://www.google.com/contacts/
And also if you reflash and sign into your google account at startup then you may be able to restore your apps (but without the settings to them).
Let me know if you're unsure about anything.
The Custom kernel have a lot of useful tools besides safeguarding from bricking.. It wont interfere with accessing google services and all that..
If you do a factory reset, it will wipe you user account data ( i.e only contacts, sms and installed apps ) and it wont wipe your pics, songs etc.. When i first installed a custom Rom i imported all my contacts from sd card and when it asked me for a location to save contacts, i selected my google account. That way all my contacts are always synced and saved in google.. So whenever you flash a Rom and enter you phone, it will ask you google account to begin with and the contacts will be automatically synced to your phone!
If you are a starter and interested in Rooting and Flashing Custom Roms i would recommend reading Dr.Ketan's guide.

That clarified a bit indeed! Unfortunately, my google contacts are filled with miscellaneous emails and no phone numbers...I should really get on top of making better backups.
Question #3: [EDIT] looks like the original ROM was DDLSC...trying for the same here.
Question #4: It seems one can run a backup directly from PhilZ. Shall I try that out before wiping everything into oblivion?

First of all, rotting doesn't remove or effect of removing google play.. S-Note, S planner and other samsung apps will work only if you are flashing a Touchwiz based Rom.. Those apps wont work in CM, PA and AOKP Roms cuz they need TW framework to work with!
If you are thinking of flashing of TW based Roms, i would recommend 2 Roms to take a look at..
X-Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320871&nocache=1 ) This is the Rom, i am currently using.. It will give your phone a tablet UI, thus taking advantage of your Note's large real estate screen! .. Multi window, floating window and buttery smooth and lots of features!

Question #3: the link asks me to choose a kernel. Can this be random choice or does it mean much?

First go to that rooting guide and root using the 1A method. It will give you philz kernel.. Then install one of the Rom Above! ( If you want a TW Roms that is )..
Then if after flashing a TW based Roms, flash this kernel to get a amazing and battery life ! It makes the ROM buttery smooth too ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2638337 )
Note that this rom only works with 4.1.2 JB Roms and Most TW Roms are 4.1.2 JB anyways!

Question #4: It seems one can run a backup directly from PhilZ. Shall I try that out before wiping everything into oblivion?

Install this app to take nandroid backup without having to go into Recovery ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.onnandbup&hl=en )
Note that this requires root, which means it will only work after you have finished rooting!
Enjoy and Happy Flashing

To install stock Roms check this guide by Dr.ketan ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 )
NOTE:- Just make sure you select Normal method, when you open the Supersu and its asks you to update Supersu binaries..
So finally solved! Thanks heaps to CustomRomAddicts and XxPixX for the help!
Just for anyone else stuck in the same boat:
Problem: Phone won't boot, stuck at the flashing samsung logo.
Tried and didn't work: remove sim, remove memory card, different battery, on charge, off charge.
Solution:1) Installed Philz kernel (found the kernel I require by looking at the stock rom code...mine was DDLSC) on my external SD. You can find this out by looking at the stock roms downloads on Dr. Ketan's page and finding out where you got your phone from in the first place (assuming it wasn't parallel imported).
2) Put the external SD back in, go into recovery mode (vol up+home+power), backup whatever I require (which in my case was a full backup).
3) Factory reset. (Mine did not delete the pictures, songs etc. It did delete all contacts, sms, call logs, applications, settings and updates).
