[ROM] Droid Bionic Webtop Natty Narwhal for Lapdock (pre-release) - Motorola Droid Bionic

Hello All, I am currently in the process of finishing up my alpha release of of my webtop ROM. I currently have Maverick Ubuntu and Gnome running seamlessly (not Gnome-panel, Gnome!). I am in the process of sorting the distribution upgrade to Natty. I will update this thread so you know where I am at until the release which will also be here.

I just had 1000 package push without errors. had to divert sysctl but its all moving again. Once these are sorted I will release the alpha build.
Here is some info on the release:
Ubuntu Distribution Type- Complete
Ubuntu Version: 11.10
Working Desktop Environments: Gnome, XFDE, X11. Default is Gnome
Login/Lock Screen status: Bypassed for now
Ubuntu-Setup Status: Still using start scripts from webtop to initiate session
File Managers: Thunar and Nautilus
Web Browsers: Firefox, Chromium, and Epiphany
Tested on ROMs: Stock and Liberty 2.0
Installation type: Webtop2SD
Bluetooth: Working. New BT daemon from Natty fixed issue. Paired with my car and streamed audio. Looks good.
Sound: Not working yet from within ubuntu apps. All droid webtop apps have sound working fine. Videos playback from gallery app in full frame no issues. Im sure there is a fix for this but im waiting to finish the natty upgrades first. Prob wont make the 0.0.1 Alpha release (this release)
Optical media: Currently have an external DVD-RW connected to the lapdock and it can be mounted and unmounted successfully with a script. Right now the OS cant mount it in Nautilus. Thunar can mount it no problem but cant unmount. I just use Thunar and then unplug the drive to clear the mount. Will look for a way to automount currectly. There are permission issues with automounter. This doesnt seem to effect the sdcard storages though.
Repository Versions (source.list): 100% Natty. No Maverick or earlier source lists
Gnome Games: All work
Webtop droid status bar: On top, still functions as original
Add-Ons installed: OpenOffice, RhythmBox, Powerpoint viewer
Install method Im leaning toward: dd from the command line or possibly by script. After installing Webtop2SD and partitioning the sdcard, you will flash an image with DD which will give you exactly what Im working with. I will be posting a full tutorial on how to install.
Linux experience required: Easy install. A caveman could do it
Sdcard EXT partition size (to start) 4GB (exactly 4096MB)
Required on phone: Root, Webtop2SD, Busybox
Ok everyone, so Im rebuilding this again from scratch with all the lessons learned and it should be ready for a test release hopefully this weekend. Im still having some problems making a proper image of the webtop for restore but I will get it sorted. I had to force a downgrade of Xorg Server as it wont accept our graphics drivers (Major version 8). It expects drivers with major version 10 which are not out yet. The latest Ive found are 1.7.X (Major version 8). Its coming along though. I am working on releasing a less bloated version and you guys can add apps that you want later on.

Will this replace the existing Webtop? My guess is yes, but stranger things ahve happened....

This will leave the stock webtop untouched. It will install to the sdcard so as far as stock webtop files, they will be unmodified. When you boot into webtop though, you will run this one instead of the original. Thats what the Webtop2SD app does. This is of course not my app but I will provide links and instructions on how to use this with my webtop Roms. Hope that makes sense. In other words this shouldnt effect upgrade files passing verification on WebTop. The Webtop2SD app does modify a few system files so system would be changed that way, but system alterations will have happened anyway if you're rooted...

I am also very interested in unlocking the full penitential of this phone but I just don't have enough language skills to do this on my own. So thanks for putting in the work for those of use who are less than native speakers!

I will be stuck with my bionic for over a year, so, since it seems this project was dropped, is there a way to get instructions and anything else so i can do what you did on mine?i don't care if it has flaws.
I'm using eclipse 2.2 and is the only way i got webtop2sd to work.

I thinks its dead, and for a simple reason niw it is likely it wont be picked back up with ics right around the corner they (motorola) has decided to do away with the nornal means of webtop, it is now webtop 3.0 beta which in a nut shell is simple tablet interface with mouse and keybaord,
Youtube ravr webtop 3.0 beta and u can see what they did with it n the ravr

It looks like the webtop 3.0 is just a mirror of the regular android os spread out to tablet mode. Its faster and angry birds does look cool but I think I would rather have webuntu linux even if its not super fast. If I am right that its mirroring mode maybe they deactivate the old webtop that ran on bionic on the sep rom. Then maybe someone can make a hack to run the old webtop and we can choose between tablet 3.0 or a sudo linux os.

[TUT] Ubuntu on Adam Methods - 03/12/11

PLEASE READ FIRST
This post will have info on the chroot method. To find out info on running Ubuntu natively on the Adam, click this link for post #2 below. Enjoy

For now project files for chroot method will be located at this Google Code Project site. Files will be posted shortly, stay tuned.
DO NOT attempt this yet until specified as alpha or beta or otherwise stated as ready for testing!!
Liability:
I'm not responsible for what you do with your device, this is a guide or tutorial for general purposes only.
If you do not have a strong understanding of rooting and how to recover a device from scratch DO NOT attempt this until we are our of beta stages. Wait till you see RC status at least.
Verified working with bugs
Directions:
I'm not sure what file format is needed on the SD card, so make sure it has the stock file format from Android.
Make sure you are rooted using the methods listed here or Notion Ink Hacks Forum.
Download necessary files:
- Main scripts: Download from Google Code Project webpage. http://code.google.com/p/chroot-ubuntu-ni-adam-tablet/
- Ubuntu.img file: Download from MegaUpload. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3ZQTCUUN
Create a folder on root of your Adam SD card called "ubuntu" and download the files from the Google Code Project site to this folder.
Unzip "ubuntu.img.zip" package and copy or move "ubuntu.img" file to the ubuntu folder you created above. Delete all the rest of the files. Do this to make sure you do not confuse the scripts I've put together for the Adam.
Plug Adam into your computer and make sure you have a connection to it.
Android SDK installed on a local computer with ADB functioning.
Make sure you do not have the SD card mounted on your computer. Also make sure USB Debugging is turned on, which I think you need for ADB.
Change the name of "bootubuntu[x].[x]" to just "bootubuntu"! DO NOT use the original "bootubuntu" file.
If you haven't already open a command prompt and type:

Enter superuser mode:

Change directory to the "ubuntu" folder:

cd /sdcard/ubuntu
Run the setup script (You should only have to run this once or whenever new updates to the files are released):

Once the script finished you should be good to go, type the following to run Ubuntu:

Troubleshooting:
If you get any errors, please FIRST, try rebooting Adam and start back at "adb shell" step 7 and try again.

Ubuntu netbook edition
Btw, I am sure you have seen this, but Ubuntu does have a Netbook Edition. It brings all the advantages of Ubuntu to a netbook – using Unity, an innovative user interface super-optimised for smaller screens and also convenient for touch screens.
So, this may be the best version to port to Adam if we can get it going. I unfortunately have no development knowledge to know if it is possible.
Mmmmmh .... i'm using Netbook edition on EEE 901 for my kids but unity isn't mature.
I prefer old version of Netbook edition (10.04 LTS) ... and that's the version used to create Ubuntu Distro for HD2.
Maybe we can ask them for some help.
I'm interested on this too. For the record, I'm keen to get an Adam and wipe Eden, replacing it with Ubuntu. I think Ubuntu 11.04 will be an awesome distro to run on a tablet, and currently Notion Ink's Adam is the only one being made that meets the stats I'd like to see.
The current hacks that exist to get Ubuntu running on the Nexus One (have done that) require running a modified server version from the sdcard, the using VNC to run a virtual session. Has it's plusses (running within Android, for instance), but I'm keen to see Ubuntu running natively. Android isn't mature enough to be a main system yet, whilst Ubuntu is. Cheers.

Thanks for your patience everyone. I've been swamped. This weekend I plan to hunt down some files, look at the scripts, and hopefully we can start trying this shortly!
This is one of the main reasons I have been waiting for the Adam for so long. Hopefully we can dual boot Ubuntu as that is what I would prefer, but if not, oh well. I want to have a tablet that acts more like a computer then a glorified smartphone without phone capabilities... Can't wait to see the development of this!

Dual booting is always preferred yes, but that is not what my method will do. This method will be a bootloader running on top of Android. For many reasons this will be easiest for now.
I'm very excited about this, can't wait to have my Adam and following the developent of ubuntu.
I really think, on another hand, that Android and Ubuntu are majors players in the open-source OS and should therefore communicate better.
I want Adam to be the best friend of my Ubuntu desktop. There are so many possible ways to make these OS interact, at least the way iOS talk to Mac OS X.
i can't wait for my Adam to be here to write apps in this direction!

Currently, my nexus one running cyanogenmod DOES talk to my Ubuntu netbook. And server. Very well in fact. Tomdroid for notes reads all off my desktop tomboy notes, and Funambol, with syncevolution syncs my calendar and address book.
Have just ordered an Adam with a friend, and plan to hack it extensively until Ubuntu is running in full, natively, as it's primary operating system. Android is useful, but doesn't have the functionality of Ubuntu. Would be useful having android as a secondary system, or within Ubuntu, but I won't hold my breathe.
I agree though, the first step seems to be getting Ubuntu running within android. I'm starting to research how the bootloader needs to be hacked to recognise a usb or dvd drive to boot from, and how it would "see" ubuntu installed on one of the internal drives. Will post back with more info soon, even though this is further down the track.

I ordered my Adam Once I saw it figure in XDA forum. My experience with XDA especially with SGS phone has been immensely satisfying. The way Things are going I am sure Adam will be an object of envy before long.

Double Rooting - Webtop and the Atrix

From a development and user standpoint I am of course interested acquiring root for the android side of things but my main interest and focus on gaining the ability to modify and enhance the webtop image that provides the "full feature" capability for Firefox. So in a sense there is a goal for Double Root on Atrix. Rooting first the android side and then rooting the webtop Linux instance.
I am guessing from the looks of it that webtop is based on Ubuntu Light. It is also likely run in a VM otherwise the phone instance of android (Dalvik) and the Webtop could not run simultaneously. Given that the platform is probably something to the effect of:
Linux File System -----> Dalvik VM ------> Android Runtime
Linux File System -----> Some other VM? -------> Ubuntu Light
I am running under some assumptions (not having an Atrix till next week ):
* The "Some other VM" is not Dalvik since I don't think as an App VM.
So some of the questions I seek to answer right away are:
What VM is running (presumed) Ubuntu light
Does that VM have security around the disk image (singed)
Is the (Webtop disk image) encrypted/signed
What is needed to get root access on the Webtop side.
The best way to get root on the Webtop side is to go after the file system. I am guessing that will be signed but it MUST be writable at some level to save state.
Just a bunch of musings. I am looking forward to getting my atrix so I can start answering some questions.
I think getting root to one or the other will make it VERY easy to root ther other.
I for one hope it is ubuntu lite, or something debian based. Hopefully make it really easy to port over a full distro.

It's also possible that they have a Linux variant running on bare-metal, without a VM. I have seen some architectures in the embedded world that allow each CPU core to work together as a typical dual-core system, OR to boot a different OS kernel on each core.
The latter case would be the most interesting in terms of getting the most out of Linux on the Atrix, assuming the second OS can be rooted. This could (speaking with almost no knowledge of Android itself), also be another angle of attack/defeat though if that means the webtop linux kernel also needs to be signed...
Then again, a VM does make more sense in terms of the near-instant boot time of the WebTop mode.

Things I believe to be true right now.
WebtopSession app initiates then session when you plug in HDMI. This is no different than any other peripheral launch.
WebtopSession app (speculating based on other posts) checks you connection type and provisioning. If you don't have a tethering plan it doesn't allow you ton continue. If you are on wifi it allows you to continue.
If you start off on WiFi and then change network state to mobile radio (and no tethering plan) will it discontinue the session?
The WebtopSession App doesn't look like it does anything other than manage the initiation of the Linux (Webtop) session.
There is nothing in the dumps that looks like it could remotely be a disk file which makes me think that there is a partition that is different that the normal android partitions. I would love to see a partition map of a rooted phone.

edit: Erm. Whoops. A little bit of research and it turns out Motorola has left the code in for when they test the OS in "goldfish-qemu", an Android emulator. Sorry ><
It's got to be QEMU. In the retail firmware dump in /etc/init.goldfish.sh:

So what I'm thinking after parsing the information I've got...
... WEBTOP is simply a QEMU (ARM version?) instance running off of some unknown image/partition on flash that outputs to HDMI with some hackery to support local media [mounted in the host OS, Android] and local control and USB keyboard/mouse input, along with special extensions to allow for use of the Android/host OS instance within the VM.

In all seriousness, the Atrix is certainly the most interesting phone from a developers standpoint, but I'm sitting and watching for a bit as I want to see how much of a problem the signed bootloader becomes first.
So does the Signed Bootloader rule out the Double root ? or changes to the Webtop APP/Module ?

It depends. Signed bootloader refers to the fact that the phone boots only if certain partitions match the Moto signatures.
The question is, where does the Webtop mode boot from, and is any part of *that* boot process signed?

Did some looking and it looks like qemu in this instance is related to running some proc emulator for android development sdk support.

Its related to ARM targets for the sdk and in this instance probably not webtop.

Agree. But from the DG's / dump could not find more interesting info except the WebtopSession.apk. I guess webtop stuff live in another patition which is actived when webtop session starting.
Could anyone who has a rooted Atrix dump the phone while webtop on?

I don't have the webtop device. What about while the phone is plugged into the TV? If it'd help any just give me the steps and I'll do it.
Yes if you plug your phone into the tv it will be able to access webtop.

[MOD] Webtop over HDMI Hack for Atrix GB 2.3.4 (HKTW, AT&T 4.5.91, ORFR 4.5.2A)

I am pleased to announce that I've patched the Atrix webtop files, allowing us to run webtop over HDMI on HKTW, AT&T 4.5.91 and ORFR 4.5.2A based system images (yes this will work on custom ROMs too), without the requirements of an official dock!
The goal is to enable the Webtop function over HDMI on any display, not just official Motorola Docks. There seem to be more HDMI display options that are disabled, for example: Clock Widget, Gallery, Music, Home. Sadly, none of these options actually do anything on the big screen, they just display the interface on the phone
However, Webtop works great! Just use the instructions below to replace the original DockService and PortalApp apk's.
Included are two versions of the DockService in the zip attached to this thread, one will enable only the additional Webtop mode for HDMI. The second one will be a "dev" version that enables every option, for those of you that are curious and/or want to try to get some of them to work over HDMI! Only one version of PortalApp is included, which is required for webtop to work, with both versions of the DockService.
One particularly interesting option that many of you are interested in is included in the dev build too: Mirror phone on display . Sadly, as stated above, it does not work (yet?). Will you get it to work?
Requirements:
Have one of the supported build and functional webtop flashed
Be rooted
Be able to work with adb
First, unpack the attached zip-file.
Go into the correct directory for your version.
Now run (in a terminal)

NOTE2: ignore errors concerning odex files if you are deodexed.
NOTE3: If you have issues with the Touchscreen Input not working, try a reboot first. If the problem doesn't go away: fastboot flash a (stock) webtop image for your base ROM. It is currently unclear what causes this problem, but my guess is a bad flash of the webtop partition, possibly CWM related. Reboot/reflash has solved the problem for a few people encountering this issue.

Some extra information on the different modes that are available (but currently non-functional):
Clock: Transform your phone screen into a big clock with perks. See the time from afar, set alarms, play music, view photos and get live weather information. This mode was designed for your bedside but is useful in the kitchen and as a desk clock too.

All I know is when I plug in the HDMI, it restarts into the webtop mode and it works well from there. The entertainment center app crashes but that isn't as a result of this, it definitely did that when I tried to run it before.

I was having the same problem with the mouse I fixed it by reflashing webtop from fastboot.

if by touchpad you mean using the screen of the phone as a touchpad, it's working fine. I don't have a lapdock to test, but I could walk over to the AT&T store in the AM to check it out.
Edit: if that is the case, and something is working on my Atrix but not on many others, I assure you it was just a lucky accident. I may be a systems engineer by date but by night I'm little more than an Android n00b. I'll gladly poke around on my device to collect info that might help others get their webtops sorted.
I successfully flashed the webtop and the touchpad is working fine. But I did notice at times, GUI became unresponsive to the touchpad (touchscreen). It it not perfect, but it works
See now this almost makes me wish I still had my Atrix...
I would love to tinker around with these APKs some more. Especially with the new options cropping up.
But, as it is I am doing it all blind... doing DEV for a phone you don't have is tricky business.

Installed using ADB via OP commands. Never flashed the CG61.img or the Update's for HKTW 2.3.4 - Roll-up of Fixes and Mods (Navalynt's Mod) that included the Webtop Fix and I am having absolutely NO problems using the screen as the mouse pad.
Make sure you followed all commands and set the permissions correctly with the chmod command.
No problems at all here, but I did flash the non-dev apk.... if you flashed the dev apk then that may be where the mouse pad issue is, I can not confirm.

Booting Ubuntu on the O2X

I've spent some (much) time this week with trying to get ubuntu running on the optimus 2x. I have succeeded to boot and get the wifi, X11 and the touch screen sort-of working.
The ramdisk is completely replaced with a busybox executable, some symlinks to it and a shell script that mounts the necessary stuff (/dev/block/mmcblk1p2 as ext3), changes root directory and calls /sbin/init.
USING THE FOLLOWING WILL VOID ANY WARRANTY YOU MIGHT HAVE LEFT AND MIGHT ALSO BRICK YOUR PHONE!
Seriously, don't do this if you don't wish to risk the data on your phone.
I will be providing some demo images for people who don't have a build environment up and running. These images will not work particularly well, don't get your hopes up .
If you want to have a big linux installation (more than 3 GB) you can flash the images to the second partition on your external sd (obviously you have to create this yourself first). You can use the following boot image (which assumes that linux is on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 with ext3:

Things that have been done to get this to "work":

Apart from grabbing the busybox stuff from some nexus one boot image (I'm sorry whoever fixed it, I don't remember where I got it from ) the boot command line had to be modified a bit, changing stuff from the default usually ends up in a phone that won't boot, but I discovered that it's possible to append new arguments to the default ones. So the following have been appended:
console=tty0 root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 init=/sbin/init
The console=tty0 makes sure that you see stuff on the screen while ubuntu get's running. The last two are not necessary to boot, but ubuntu seem to like (need?) them (or at least the init=/sbin/init), since otherwise you never get to the login prompt on the screen.
2. The Ubuntu installation
To make it possible to communicate with the phone at all adbd was put into the /sbin/ folder and a symlink was created /system/ -> /. Also the "/sbin/adbd recovery &" command was added to rc.local to make it autostart.
2.1. Modules and wifi
We need the /lib/modules/2.6.32.9 directory. Most files inside that were generated using the "depmod" command, the exception is wireless.ko which was taken from android, the firmware and nvram files needed for the wifi chip to work were placed in the /lib/firmware/wl/ folder. To make the wifi module autoload with the proper firmware "wireless" was added to /etc/modules and the file /etc/modprobe.d/wireless.conf was created with the contents describing the location of the firmware and nvram.
To make the wifi autoconnect on boot the /etc/network/interfaces file was modified with the following contents:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
(To make the wifi autoconnect to your wireless you need to run the command "wpa_passphrase networkname networkpassword > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf using adb or chroot)
2.2. X11
Getting X up by running xinit produces a simple black screen on the phone. At first I thought the problem was that the refresh rate was set to 106 Hz, indeed changing it with xrandr and pushing a new mode got me a visible xterm on Kubuntu 11.04:

On Ubuntu 10.10 it even gave me a nice colored gdm screen:

But the image I got there was static and wasn't being updated. Turns out the reason the screen was black earlier with the 106 Hz rate and the reason why the screen is now just showing an image is that the framebuffer device doesn't update the screen like it should..
By modifying the kernel source to redraw the screen every 50 ms (~20 Hz) it's possible to get a scren that works. This is an ugly hack in the tegra-fb driver though, so I'm open for suggestions on how to solve it in a better way!
2.3. Touchscreen
By default the only thing the touchscreen does is force the mouse up in the left corner, I think this is due to some multitouch thing. Some more kernel hacking (basically half-disabling multitouch) makes the touchscreen work.

3. Misc
(K)Ubuntu 11.04 uses a new version of libc which crashes with the current nvidia kernel (2.6.32.9) on this hardware (http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/errata-657451-tls-bit-20-cp15-c13-3), so I'm going back to Ubuntu 10.10 until someone ports a newer kernel to the Optimus 2x or this problem can be solved in another way.
edit 1: Ubuntu 10.10 with much more working X11 noted in section 2.2.1.
edit 2: X11 working even more, touchscreen works aswell!
edit 3: Landscape mode works with both X11 and the touchscreen now, getting ready for alpha 1!
Current status:
Working:
- adb (best way of controlling device currently)
- X11 (only framebuffer with hardcoded refresh rate of ~20Hz)
- landscape mode fixed! =D
- touchscreen (probably only single touch)
- wifi (only when running things from console, ubuntus network manager does not recognize it)

Username 'ubuntu', password 'ubuntuxda'. Don't use this if you don't know how to restore the boot partition! (Or else you won't be able to boot back into android!)
Experiments:
Tried disabling the CONFIG_TEGRA_ERRATA_657451 switch in the kernel to make newer linux versions boot. This might be a bad idea in the long run, but this far things are working better than with the switch enabled..
I tried Ubuntu via chroot method posted in other thread, but I'm a noob.. Can you please explain what is different about your ubuntu?? Does it boot without Android and doesn't need VNC stuff?
Yes, it boots instead of android when turning on the phone, but it doesn't work completely, so I mostly put it up here so that people could help test and fix/hack things.
You rock! Unfortunately I'm no dev, so can't help but hopefully others will, so we'll get a fully working linux on our phone, and maybe later even meego. Is there btw drivers for the gpu? Because hdmi, with usb host ofc, would be really useful!

gpu drivers are closed source, and the ones released by nvidia require a newer kernel (2.6.38), so thats not really possible yet.
Newer kernel will be necessary anyway though, since the crashes I'm getting seems to be due to a bug in tegra which gets worked around in 2.6.36. I'm not skilled enough to perform that port though. I will of course give it a try, but most likely I'll go for some older version of ubuntu and/or perhaps meego instead.

What would happen if you changed this to 72Hz instead? I saw that info when I was browsing System Information in some app. Im not a dev At. All. But tell me what you think it's probably a stupid question

I will not provide a complete root file system for two reasons:
1. It's pretty easy to make yourself, grab the omap3 kubuntu mobile image from the kubuntu site, or use rootstock from an ubuntu installation to build one yourself.
2. My upload sucks, and putting several hundred MB onto the interwebz would hurt me.

After some troubleshooting and voodoo magic I realized that it tried to run the screen at [email protected], which is hmm, wrong . So setting up a script at /etc/xprofile, which makes sure the refresh rate is 60Hz, and running it after xinit gets you a xterm!!!

Telling /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to run it makes sure that it gets set up properly by the startx script, unfortunately startx doesn't go through for me on kubuntu because of some weird error caused by a hardware problem in tegra: (http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra/forum/errata-657451-tls-bit-20-cp15-c13-3).
Unfortunately this (probably) means that either we'll have to stay with old versions of libc or get a newer kernel (2.6.36 contains fix). Old libc seems backwards, but porting a new kernel requires a bit more skill than I possess.
2.2.1. Ubuntu 10.10
Grabbed the image ubuntu-netbook-10.10-preinstalled-netbook-armel+omap.img.gz from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/maverick/release/ . After first unpacking the tgz, then unpacking the raw disk image to partition images (with 7zip on windows) and then flashing the 1.img file to the second partition on my sdcard I managed to run a much more bug free ubuntu than before.
Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) uses an older version of som libraries that don't crash with the old o2x kernel.
This has lead to the following:

Obviously touch screen isn't working properly (pressing it puts the pointer into the upper left corner :S) so can't get further than this currently.
3. Misc
avahi-daemon and cups seems to be crashing all the time and restarting, so removing them (apt-get purge if ubuntu/kubuntu) will make the boot much cleaner. Also I get lots of alignment trap kind of errors that shouldn't be there for different kinds of services, (due to tegra bug mentioned earlier).

Most computer screens usually support atleast 72hz also, it's just that it only works with d-sub, and sometimes only at a lower resolution.. It's possible to make special drivers to some screens to enable higher refresh rate through dvi also.
Anyway, it's good the screen on the phone refreshes at 72hz instead of 60 for android, but in linux I really don't see the benefit.. Doesn't hurt to have though. Btw, if we would stay on this kernel, can we use the drivers from android then? Shouldn't gpu also work? Or are the drivers limited and don't allow xorg for example? Sorry if it's stupid question, don't have that much knowledge how android works yet.
Update: X11 and touchscreen work on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick with new kernel (just a few hacks )!
manasgirdhar: sure! Lot's of things to do new kernel is needed for anything newer than ubuntu 10.10, and even here things like sound etc (cpu scaling maybe too) don't work.
kruppin: actually i removed the xorg.conf now, the phone thinks its running at 106 Hz and it works. Unfortunately in practice it goes at more like 20 Hz because of the hack I made to enable the fbdev output in the kernel. Android doesn't use X11, so those drivers wont be of any use. (I will post the kernel modifications to github soon)

I don't think usb otg works since I am basically using the android version of the kernel, I also won't be able to try since I don't have a cable... (will buy one sooner or later).
Dual boot probably works if you flash the boot.img onto the recovery partition instead of the boot partition (/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 instead of /dev/block/mmcblk0p5). I have not tried this though. That way regular booting would give android and booting while holding volume down would give ubuntu, only problem with this is that cwm will be gone and the only way to fix broken things would be to flash with nvflash.
well it is not a major deal if have cifs avail needs kernel support as well. Benee mentioned (might) some otg support, mayb u could ask.
also, you might give E17 a try, it is butter-fast, and has a touch module for keyboard (letter zooming.!..) LINK
this can be compiled on a lot of hw, and gives good response with fbdev non-accel drivers also.
and most linux apps work on it fine. ofc until we have 2d/3d accel and might try compiz/fusion as well

Kernel version is 3.0.8.
If you can install linux distros on the backend of rooted ARM devices it should make sense we could do the same....maybe
Ubuntu on a RAZR I ? Linux x86 apps + windows apps with wine without even recompile? I think this devece needs some love. It can be the next HTC HD2 for shure.

Compile busybox (with more extensions) for x86 and install it alongside root (or after root)
Make a mountable image from an ubuntu clean install and mount it (probably also needs busybox)
chroot into this mounted image
run a vnc X server on a framebuffer
vnc from android
This is how it is done on other android devices, will attempt to compile and try these instructions out this weekend when I meet him but booting native ubuntu is a much better idea (even better if we can make it receive calls ).
And for what Windows on 4,3 inches display? It dont have hdmi.

Go look up the HTC HD2. It can run Windows Phone 7 and Android dual-booted (with Linux from SDCard), and was originally the last, albeit most powerful, Windows Mobile 6 phone ever made.
Even though it is four years old, there is a massive and vibrant dev community behind it, making it reach the front page of XDA forums.
However, even the venerable HD2 is getting old, with 1GHz processor and half a gig of RAM that was top-of-the-line years ago, and people have looked in vain for some kind of successor. Hopefully, the Razr I, with an unlockable bootloader and Intel processor, will be the one. But that remains for us to do.

So I tried this out and there is a chroot-compatible busybox after rooting ("busybox chroot" needs to be called as opposed to "chroot" as there is no properly made link), so anyone with this phone can try (using a PC) install Ubuntu without the grub bootloader using manual partitioning on a single ext3 (I am not sure if ICS supports ext4) partition on a microsd, put into your phone, use a root terminal, mount it, mount the adequate dev, dev/pts, proc and sys partitions and chroot right in. You then might want to install a VNC server in Ubuntu to be able to create a VNC X session in a framebuffer and a VNC client on the android side to VNC into localhost (127.0.0.1), but that should work, I didn't have time to try it this weekend If someone gets stuck post and let us see what happens I cannot wait to see if wine can run desktop Spotify with sound, excited a little hehe.
EDIT: So to make this more understandable you must:
Install Ubuntu (using your computer) to a MicroSD, specifying partitions manually and choosing only a single ext3. Right before clicking install there is a button with something along the lines of "Advanced options", disable the install the bootloader (grub) option.
Insert the MicroSD into the phone and open a root terminal
I don't use Android, maybe it automounts in /media/sdcard or /sdcard, if not you will have to find the device and partition name (probably /dev/mmcblk0p1 or /dev/sdb1) and issue "mount /dev/DEVICEPARTITION /media/sdcard"
mount -t proc proc /media/sdcard/proc
mount -o bind /dev/ /media/sdcard/dev/
mount -t devpts devpts /media/sdcard/dev/pts
busybox chroot /media/sdcard /bin/bash
Now a shell from Ubuntu should open. apt-get update && apt-get install vncserver (maybe the DNS settings must be set in /etc/resolv.conf, not yet sure)
vncserver (or start vncserver, something along those lines)
Now from Android install a VNC viewer and vnc into 127.0.0.1 (or localhost)
That should do it, again if you get stuck post here
i had htc hd2, the most amazing phone in the world. I wanna buy the rarz i for the x86 processor in it. But cpu power without community and developers is nothing :|
Sorry for my bad english.
Yesterday we tried something:
We used dd to put an arch linux image on a micro sd card...
Though my laptop wasnt even able to boot from any sd card, this should work on our phone...
but how to make it boot from the sd card? xD
btw you might have noticed, this will make only linux boot, not android, we dont chroot, may somebody build a simple ubuntu img for complete linux installer?

so right now i am trying to chroot into an img file, mounting it and then chrooting it but all i get is:
chroot: can't execute '/system/bin/sh': No such file or directory
whats wrong?

Good to see there are people with the same ideas. I´ve searched a lot for this thread.
I will also try to get this device for the same reasons when it´s cheaper. Has anybody tried to get Plasma Active or Tizen to run?
I think Active should now be possible through kubuntu Active?

thanks for your post on preparing an arch image (I don't have permision to post in devel forum, maybe because I'm a newbie ), It worked well for me although I had to adjust some things such as path and pts mount
I now have a gcc toolchain and a latex distrib on my phone I had never used arch, found it very good
I've also tried some window managers ... the one I find best for the moment is enlightenment in the touchscreen mode, awesome works great as well.
I would also suggest to use Hacker's keyboard instead of stock android, it is a complete keyboard, very usefull when dealing with terminals ... as for VNC viewer, one should recompile android-vnc-viewer with the patches given in Issues 238 and 239 (can't post links either), it's a lot better

First, Complete Linux Installer doesnt work because its images are compiled for arm not x86 (i tried )

the nexus 7 stuff is interesting and we consider making flashable fastboot for the razr i since we dont have cwm or such you know
i am talking to jordan keyes who recently owned a nexus 7 who probably will try out the ubu stuff and i might get some system info
but i would really prefer a dual boot, capable of booting from sd...
