I tried restoring from a nandroid backup I made and after the restore, I could only get as far as the i9000 boot screen. I went into recovery to try and flash a ROM, but CMW recovery could not mount my partitions (partitions got messed up by nandroid?) The only quick way I could think of was to use odin and refalsh and repartition.
I restored my nandroid from within CWM recovery. Is there something I am missing in the restore process? Obviously something went wrong.

Hey man, sounds like you tried to restore one system over another,
Forexample, stock over cm7? and that messes up the partitions as you see!
Try to install the rom you are trying to restore before you start restoring!
Should work then!

I did indeed try to restore a ROM which was very different from the installed ROM. I will keep your suggestion in mind the next time I do a restore.
Just to confirm : yes, you need to flash the base ROM you're trying to restore.
I played with ICS over the weekend and got back by flashing a stock - well stock+ - JVZ and restoring nandroid.
Did the same thing, stupid as I am,
the big problem is that none of the computers I've tried with is detecting my phone right now.
I get in to CWM but and to download mode but that ain't helping me since i can't use Odin to flash back to stock rom.
Any ideas?

ok so i was getting ready to flash newvision v3 by jac and drizzy...so i went to bootloader....wiped my ext3 and then wiped my phone... then i did a nandroid backup and I flashed... then restored it...after that its on the g1 screen and i havent tried recovery yet and i just realized that since i wiped before nandroid it didnt really backup anything...what should i do???just reflash if recovery works???

Yeah, you confused your steps a little. Seeing that you did a nandroid after all of the wiping, you essentially just made a backup of your boot, data, recovery, and system images but your cache image is not gonna contain much because you wiped I'm pretty sure. If you flashed your new ROM, you can't flash your nandroid backup as that will take you back to your old ROM. Nandroid isn't a back up tool in the way you want to you use (settings, preferences etc) It is a tool that will restore your system in case you mess something up. If you want the new drizzy JAC build, you just flash that and leave your nandroid for a rainy day or if you screw up a flash and get a bootloop.

I used odin to get boot it back up and then I used ClockworkMod to restore backed up data....
After phone said 'restore complete,' I let the phone reboot, but the phone will not reboot
at&t screen pops up and then black out then pops up again then into android recovery mode.
Any ideas?
Could you please provide a little more information about how you got to where you are? (e.g. what rom/kernel/modem/theme you were flashing, what ODIN you used, what version of CWM, etc.) Anything you provide will be helpful in troubleshooting.
Well I had cognitive 4.5.3 installed and I tried restoring using clockmod recovery
the restore wasn't successful and the phone would stay black screened after Galaxy S logo screen
So I turned on odin3 and put my phone on download mode then hit start on odin3
that successfully restored the phone to froyo 2.2 without any of my data
so I tried using clockmod recovery once again to restore the backup
and then... that's where I am
The phone won't boot. It will just go into recovery mode
Here's the message I got after trying to restore once again

When did you make that nandroid backup? If you made it while on stock, you'll have to go back to stock first, then run the restore command. If on cognition, you'll need to be on the version you were on when you made the backup and restore there.

Do I need to factory reset as well?

To answer your question, doing the master clear will erase EVERYTHING stored in the phone's internal memory. Don't do that step now, as you should be able to get out of where you are without doing that.
I think where your problem occurred is that at some point you made a nandroid backup in CWM, and by trying to restore that on stock, it's freaking out. If you can remember what ROM setup you had on your phone when you made the backup, you could try to get back to that setup to use the restore option in CWM.
Before doing any of the things you're doing now, had you made a backup in Titanium Backup?
I do have backup made with Titanium Backup.

I am currently at 2.2 Froyo, which was the rom I was using when backing up using CWM
You've flashed 2.2 stock? If so just flash the rom you previously had with cwm then let it boot. After it boots reboot into cwm then perform a restore in cwm. If that doesnt work nand backup might not be good and you will just have to flash stock again and just rub tibu and leave it at that.
**Thing about NAND backups is that you have to use the same system when you restore (i.e. you nand backup usng cognition then you flash another rom when you nand restore its not going to boot).

My phone has been saved!
I accidentally did a factory reset while in Safe mode. My first time ever getting into Safe mode and I have no idea how I got in there, only realized after the wipe. Thus, I lost all my pictures, videos etc... I made a Nandroid backup before the wipe so that got deleted as well. I have another Nandroid backup on my SD card that I have been trying to copy to the phone's internal memory but I keep getting errors.
First error on CWM was the annoying MD5 mismatch - I think I was able to fix that with the terminal emulator and the Notepad++ and MD5 calculator. Then the next error was, 'error restoring boot image.' I made this Nandroid backup with Semaphore 2.7.4 and still is my kernel now.
I believe this Nandroid recovery is corrupted. Is there any chance of recovering it? I've tried PhotoRec and Recuva already and they didn't work for me. PhotoRec gave me weird filenames and Recuva didn't find the stuff I was looking for. I still have this untouched backup on my SD and everything else on the SD works by the way.

Have you tried to flash your semaphore kernel + recovery via Odin/Heimdall, so you have a clean recovery?

EDIT: If this isn't working for you, you are always able to flash a stock samsung rom and then get back to your current rom + recovery.
If this does not work, i would guess your backup is corrupted. Had this by myself in the past... corrupted backups

So I already know that I have to use the Abyss Kernel to flash in between Custom ROMs.
How about making Nandroid Backup and Restore?
Should I flash Abyss first, then reboot to recovery (from advanced, not restarting the phone) then make the back up or restore from there?
Or should I use the CWM version of the ROM that I last flash that I want to backup (e.g. Alliance ROM)?
Will it affect restoring from different CWM versions?

Somehow it will affect, and i am not sure you can restore from diff roms.
nandroid backup procedure is same(going in cwm recovery and do backup)

Oh ouch .. that is really a good point. So Nandroid does NOT back up CWM?
If it does not, I guess .. I can only restore from nandroid using only one ROM with the same CWM it used.

I backup and/or restore almost every day. I'm not a cwm-r or android expert at all, just talking from my own experiences.
In the beginning, many months ago, when I just had bought my N7000 I flashed/restored/backup/wiped from all kind of kernels and cwm recovery versions, and it happened that I wasn't able to restore my backups. It was kind of very frustrating from time to time to loose a well tweaked and configured rom. But I was lucky I didn't emmc brick. That I realize today.
Then I changed my cwm-r habits. And I would for backups recommend you just enter cwm-r from whatever rom you are using and make a backup (nandroid). It will backup your kernel and cwm-r too.
To restore I would say it's a good idea to flash Abyss4.2, then REBOOT recovery to full wipe and then restore rom. Make sure you really installed Abyss4.2 and REBOOTED recovery before you wipe because else there could be a risk you end up with a nasty emmc hardbrick depending on if you are on a safe kernel or not. Many people would probably say it's not necessary to wipe, and maybe it isn't. But by the time I didn't it happened once in a while that I got problem with restore, not often at all though, but still it happened a few times. Since I started using this method with wipe, restore has worked fine without any problems hundreds of times (yes, I flash/backup/restore a lot xD, haha).
But once again, I'm just speaking from my own experiences nandroid backup/restore... I don't say it's the proper or best way to do it. It works fine for me though.

I recently rooted and flashed a custom ROM onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. I'm very new to this thing and find everything quite overwhelming, but I want to learn.
I flashed this ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119219 (the v6 No Wipe version because I was petrified about losing my data if I factory reset), but the phone is now extremely laggy and buggy, so I want to go back to the stock ROM (so I can do a nandroid backup) and then try a different custom ROM like Dmod.
So, my question is, do I have to factory reset my phone to go back to stock? Or can I just flash this file (http://hotfile.com/dl/189271016/833...T-I8190N-BTU-I8190NXXALL6-1356151513.zip.html) using the CWN recovery menu without wiping? I'm asking because my phone keeps giving me an error everytime I try to backup using the CWM Recovery menu.

That firmware is a zipped odin-file. Can't be flashed in CWM.
Make a cwm nandroid backup of your "/data" to your external sd (that's your installed apps)
You can also backup your apps and appdata using titanium backup or similar, for later restore.
Just remember to never backup/restore systemapps.
Backup internal sd to computer just to be sure, if you in any situation have to make a factory reset. Make sure any kind of backup is on your external sd before you make factory reset, or it will be lost forever

CWM has NO choice to backup/restore only parts of the device. Only a full backup is possible.
This is only in TWRP. Pity! I only use CWM because TWRP makes corrupted backups (three times) for me.
Or is it possible to pick out only DATA from the backup? And what is happen with the dalvik cache, which
consists of the byte-code for all installed apps, optimized for the ROM which created it?
"advanced restore and restore only /data". Is this the way in CWM that you mean @benz?

Yes that's exactly what I meant, "advanced restore and restore only /data"
You don't have to worry about cache and dalvik because it's automatically created on the initial start.
