[Q] Samsung Galaxy S won't come on after flash - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I tried flashing my phone (to I9000XXJVS)
I've only gotten to step 11, which flashes the phone.
In ODIN, I selected PIT, PDA, PHONE and CSC. All 4 had files.
I selected the following options:
Re-Partition, Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time
While flashing, I got the following messages
<ID:0/005> boot.bin
<ID:0/005> Sbl.bin
<ID:0/005> param.lfs
<ID:0/005> factoryfs.rfs
<ID:0/005> dbdata.rfs
<ID:0/005> cache.rfs
<ID:0/005> zImage

<ID:0/005> Completed..

<ID:0/005> Removed!!
I switched off the phone and tried to turn it back on.
It won't come one at all. It's not showing anything.
It won't even go into recovery mode.
It won't go into download mode.
Pls help.

Take the battery out for 15 minutes and then replace and see if it powers back on.
If it still wont turn on or go into download mode using the key combination then try using a USB JIG.
What rom did you try flashing?

I'm trying to go to Gingerbread 2.3.5 I9000XXJVS.
I waited 15 mins. Still nothing.
Even when I put in the cable through USB, nothing shows up. Normally it shows that it's charging.
See screenshot of my ODIN configuration while flashing:

Try and plug your phone into the PC and then try the 3 button combo with the cable attached.

No difference. Still won't come on.
I hope the board is not fried.

Very strange...
I cant view the image you posted at the moment to see if files were put in the right places because im on works ancient internet browser but from what you wrote in the OP the flash appears to have gone ok...
Might be worth getting a JIG and trying that. If that doesnt work maybe its time for the unbrickable mod.
REALLY stupid question but you have flashed the right firmware for your device right?
I would give the JIG a try. You can buy one from ebay for like less than £5 GBP or you can throw one together youself.
Did the phone reboot fully after the flash before you turned it back off?

Yes, the flash went OK.
What do you mean by the right firmware? I got the firmware from samfirmware. I actually new to this.
And what's a JIG? How do I put one together?
The phone didn't reboot. The screen was blank but kinda slightly lighted. So I tried powering it up but it didn't so I removed the battery.

I got the JIG. I'll try to build one myself.
I'll let you know if it works.
One more thing: the battery was kinda low when I started this operation.
I'm thinking maybe the battery ran out.
But it's not even charging when I plug it in.

What i mean is do you have an i9000 and not an i9000M or another variant of the i9000 and have tried to flash a firmware from an i9000 onto an i9000M or i9000B for example.
I wish i could see that picture you posted to have a better look.
In the PDA box you should have had a file called PDA or CODE... The modem box should have had MODEM or PHONE... and then CSC should have had CSC...
There should have been a PIT file in the PIT box...
You should have had repartion ticked... auto reboot ticked and auto F reset ( ithink its called that ) ticked.
The update bootloader and other check boxes that are below the 3 i mentioned should all have been unticked.

I use a GT-i9003
in PDA i have CODE...
in PHONE i have MODEM...
in CSC i have GT...
in PIT i have a .pit file
I had all three boxes ticked (Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time)
All other checkboxes were unchecked.

It looks like you have flashed incompatible firmware onto your device.
You have flashed firmware for the i9000 which wont work on the i9003.
You have gone into the wrong section on Samfirmware.com. There is a seperate section for the i9003.
You can still try the JIG trick but im not sure if that will work either on your device as the hardware may be slightly different and require a different resistor value to force download mode but im not sure about that part...
It looks like you have flashed bootloaders onto your device that wasnt designed for it which could mean a hard brick.
Maybe the unbrickable mod will help you out.
Im not too sure how to help you from this point on im afraid if you cant get download mode working...
Have a good search through google and see if you can find any helpful information.
Other thing is to say you had an update for it and it broke your phone and try and play dumb and see what happens =/.
I hope you can get it sorted mate.

[Q] Help! Woke up this morning and phone won't turn on!

I woke up this morning and my phone won't turn on! I hold down power and see the Samsung splash screen... then the display goes off and nothing happens. I can't launch into recovery mode... I can launch into Download Mode, but can't do anything from there... (no response to any buttons)
I tried pulling out the battery and SIM - to no avail...
I am running a rooted Bell phone with the lag fix.
Please give me suggestions! What do I need to do to recover this using my PC and adb?
Time to recharge your SGS?
Before i give you the bad news
try Flashing the phone with Odin, see if you can complete a successful flash
However you'll most likely see an Odin error concerning mounting the drive, your Internal SD drive is most likely dead, and it'll need to be replaced by Samsung/Bell service center.
there are many known cases like this related to the lag fix

It's fully charged... it was charging all night. What's weird is that I've plugged it in and it's flashing the battery symbol.... I can't turn off the screen - it keeps flashing this symbol

if you hold the power button, does it turn on at all?
how far does it go into the boot process?
does it get stuck after the pretty Galaxy S swirling logo?

I don't get the swirling logo... I just get the static splash page "Samsung Galaxy S" - it stays for about a second, then the screen goes black.
I'm trying to figure out what to do once I'm in download mode... I have Samsung Kies (which won't detect it...) and Odin (which won't detect it)

that doesn't sounds right
try installing Odin on another machine
seems like the PC you are trying to use has the USB port locked up.
i've had that happen on mine before
if you turn off the PC, remove the power cord
power it on, then put the power cord
and power it on again
that should reset it
Ok, Odin seems to recognize the phone (it installed all the drivers when it was in Download Mode) - I clicked "start" and got the following:
<ID:0/008> Added!!
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/008> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/008> Removed!!
then the phone went back into the flashing battery symbol... I need to grab the official Bell Samsung Galaxy S .pit file I guess.
Samsung Kies just sat there trying to connect when the phone was in Download Mode...
Okay, so I've downloaded the 0803.pit file... I just need to know which firmware to flash it with under PHONE, PDA, CSC, and DUMP...
Would really appreciate the help!
JH2 firmware for all 3 and flash with correct pit file and click partition (but will wipe all data).

I found the thread for JH2, but none of the links in it work!

Got one that you can spare?
Also, 0803.pit works for JH2 right?
Really appreciate your help!
I'm just going to try to find JG9 and upgrade via Samsung Kies... that's if I can find JG9 - these are so hard to find!
Hi Mate,
I just had the same problem - could not reboot from normal recovery, could not reboot from clockworkmod recovery. I had to launch nandroid recovery.
On my unit, it seems that the problem was caused by a conflict between setcpu profiles and the alter minfree settings from ryanza's oclf.
If you have clockworkmod installed and have backed up your rom, you should be able to use nandroid recovery.
I have now changed setcpu not to run on boot, and have not used alter minfree - prob seems to be sorted.
Hope this helps (you or somebody else).
Regards, Paul.

Saw that.. but there's no I-Series... I can't see any firmwares for Samsung Galaxy S there - am I blind?
EDIT: Found it - thanks.
This JH2 on his site is the "updated" version of JH2 that fixes the 3-button recovery as per the Facebook page right?
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150262535205538&id=260085296049
or is this the "earlier" version of JH2?

Do I need Odin v1.3 or is Odin v1.0 sufficient? Using PIT0512
EDIT: Pulled out battery... tried again... now see blue status bar moving along the bottom... fingers crossed that this works!
It completed... and same thing is happening. Can't start it up...

Welcome back in our family.
I bought a New Samsung Galaxy TAB, just two days back, from Amazon.com and was shipped to Washington DC. It's an unlocked version that has no Operator logos on it. It was indeed an awesome thing until I used my magic hands on it only 15 hours after I received.
I had a problem with Arabic Characters; they were disconnected and sometimes reversed. So, I searched over the net for one day and chose to install a ROM from Samfirmware.com. I chose the latest firmware from the table of arabic firmwares. It's P1000JPJM5. (P1000JPJM5 ## P1.PIT Version 2.2 2011 January), so here are the steps that I've gone through:
1. Download the firmware.
2. I use the Odin 1.7 and applied the PIT file first. It finished successfully in 11 seconds.
3. I put the Galaxy tab in the Download mode (decrease volume + Power).
4. I applied the PDA using the Odin 1.7, I chose the TAR file that came with the P1000JPJM5 downloaded file.
5. A light blue indicator started just below the Download logo, the indicator progressed cheerfully, but suddenly stopped. I checked the Odin, and found a "FAILED!" sign. I searched the log, and found the following error:
<ID:0/045> cashe.rfs
<ID:0/045> Modem.bin
<ID:0/045> Complete(Write) Operation failed
<ID:0/045> All threads completed. (Succeed 0/ Failed 1)
attached is a jpg file having the error exactly.
6. Regardless of the warning saying "Don't unplug the target" or whatever it said by that time, and since the application of the firmware stopped, I unplugged the USB cable. I did that after waiting for 20 minutes whereas the Galaxy Tab didn't show any response but that download logo and the non-moving indicator.
7. After I did that, the Galaxy Tab became dead. Whenever I attach it to the computer, it displays a 3 icons screen; a computer, a phone, and a warning triangle with an exclamation mark. I assume that this means that there is an error in the connection between the Tab and the computer.
8. No matter how many times I tried the Download, recovery or any other thing, the phone would only display one of two things, the 3 icons screen that I listed in the previous step, or the Battery screen showing a grey battery.
HELLLLLP!!!!

Go to samfirmware.com download the files for your device.
Select pit file then check repartition - flash
Select pda csc modem, uncheck repartition - flash.

Thanks Lucian, This is exactly what I did in the first place. Used Odin 1.7 and applied the PIT file coming with it, then applied the P1000JPJM5 PDA and CSC modem file.
Unless the P1000JPJM5 is not for my device?? How to know?
Lucian, any clue?
My tab is dead after I tried to install an arabic firmware from samfirware.com. I bought my tab originally from the US. Now, I'll download the "suitable" firmware from samfirmware.com as you advised, but How would I ever know the suitable firmware given that my device is exactly this one (that's where I bought)(my devise is dead now and can only display the download mode):
www .amazon. com /GALAXY-TAB-P1000-16GB-UNLOCKED/ dp /B004AKOVIS/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1305378100&sr=8-1

Khatypically, alive with a zoombie tab
totally unresponsive tab
I have been searching around forums looking for advice and have been unable to locate a solution so here seems as good a place as any to ask for help. I have an unlocked gtp-1000 that has been running overcome 1.4.5 for last month very nicely until tonight when I thought it would be a good idea to get some gingerbread goodness like I have been using on my nexus one. was going to flash Overcome ROM v2.0.0 BETA 2 and was following guide but only got halfway through flashing stock gingerbread with odin when laptop unexpectedly did a restart for an unknown reason while I was away getting a snack. was unsure whether flashing process had been completed so opened odin again and tried reflashing. couldnt get past
setup connection...
so tried to reboot into download mode and then powered down. now tab is dead. battery was at 80% when it died
before I take back to samsung tomorrow any ideas?
I have plugged into wall charger= nothing
plugged into laptop=nothing and not detected
held power and volume up=nothing
held power and volume down=nothing
held power and volume up & home=nothing
no sounds or anything at all on screen
truly bricked?
Updates:
Hi Guys,
I applied the p1000nubjm2 firmware. I downloaded it from samfirmware. It's the latest P1000L firmware for America/Australia. It failed in the PDA file: P1000NUBJM2_P1000NUBJM2_P1000NUUBJM2_HOME.TAR . I was planning to apply the gingerbread update after that.
Now to the results, As you know, before, I was able to reach the download mode, the startup Galaxy Tab/Samsung screen, and the battery displays when connecting the cable. Now, after application of this lovely firmware and failure, nothing (literally "Nothing") takes place. The device became more dead than it was before . It doesn't display anything and it doesn't respond to power or displays the battery. It became a black $500 cost brick No matter how much time I keep it charging (or what "should be" charging), it would never startup again (sigh!) The ODIN and samsung kies no more recognize the device when connected to the computer.
Any additional clues before I decide to convert it to a teacup base?
Regards,
ARK

i would hate to say bricked but it might be!

hey i have samsung captivate i897, and just flashed the ultimate rom to try out, well tried to switch to different rom. When i went to flash back to stock using odin one click to jf6 firmware its stuck in download mode and wont finish. Phone will not boot just goes to black screen and will not go into recovery mode. I can get it to download mode, but it gets stuck at after the loading bar moves a tiny bit.
Ive tried it three times now with no luck, ive tried pulling sim and battery out for awhile and then try but download mode gets stuck when i try to flash firmware. Anybody got any ideas?

What is your build number, located under battery, mine its 1008
You can try this, keep battery our of your phone for a couple of minutes. Then try again. i have gotten stock st that point before. A couple of tried got me through
mine is 1006, why is the build number important?
It can be but I think your build should work with odin
There its more than one odin
Look through this thread hopfully it will help

[Q] keep rebooting and no recovery mode

Purchased two Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy S as-is from local kijiji.
They all performing the same thing, rebooting at Galaxy S logo, GT-I9000M page, it won't go any further. and there is no recovery mode at start-up.
Here are the steps which I have played with for past two days.
1. Trying to get to recovery mode
- tried ADB, but it doesn't work, since "USB debug" is not on, and it won't accept as a device, and I am not able to turn that on, since I can't even get on the main screen.
- tried three key combo, vol up + home + power on, at least a hundred times for past two days, it doesn't work. fortunately download mode is working (at least I have more option to try). and I know how to get to recovery mode, I played with my friend's before.
2. Trying to use ODIN to flash the firmware
- unchecked "re-partition", unchecked "bootloader", pick 512 as PIT and then choose following as PDA
JH2, JK3, JK4, JL2
always successful on refresh, but phone still does the same, stuck at LOGO page
- also tried, checked "re-partition", and checked "bootloader", pick 512 as PIT and repacking following into PDA, Phone/Modem, CSC, still won't work...
JP series, JH, JK series, JL
At the beginning I though it was problem on CSC, I didn't use correct one to match my phone model #, but what's mine??? I can't go into my phone to check. I checked my friend's I9000, he used I9000BMCJK4, and I assume all JK series should work with me, since our IMEI are similar. And I tried many times on different cache.rft as CSC.tar, still no luck for me
I go crazy now, $400 USD gone. Seriously needing help. Any help is highly appreciated.
try the one jl2 download file and samsungfirmwares.com it flashes a special bootloader that may fix things.. it should be a single file you put in as pda nothing else..
if not they may have permantely trashed internal memory and you are sol.

I have tried one of JL2 file from somewhere (don't remember where), but I will get one JL2 file from samsungfirmwares.com again, see if that works.
Do you mean, only choose the file for PDA, left PIT empty, and get everything uncheck?
permantely trashed internal memory? are these the common problem with this model? I got two of these, and both of them have the same issue, I think, there should be a way to slove it, right? Should I give up these thoughts???
anyways, thanks anyways, I will report back after I flesh JL2 from samsungfirmwares.com
Ok, you need to flash jl2 with pda, repartition, pit file and the secondary boot loader... The SBL(secondary boot loader) is what will actually fix your phone
Hopefully it will work.

above message I got from ODIN3 v1.30, it looks fine for refresh, but it doesn't work. the phone keep rebooting, it won't pass LOGO page, again, only download mode I can use.
HELP! HELP! HELP!
any leads???
is "<ID:0/005> Sbl.bin" secondary boot loader???
I got the file for PDA, I9000UGJL2, is this the one? if not, where should I get it? how do I update it?
I did it again, with "re-partition" checked, PIT choosed as s1_odin_20100512.pit, I9000UGJL2_homebinary_add_param.tar (which I just downloaded from samfirmware.com), it still doesn't work.
anything else I can try? maybe something simple I didn't do???
I too am a bell user I had the same problem a few weeks back. This is going to sound messed up, but i'm going to do my best to explain how I solved the problem.
DO NOT MULTI-TASK ON THE COMPUTER WHILE DOING THIS. CLOSE ALL OTHER APPLICATIONS.
-remove external sd and sim card
-go into download mode (hold vol down+power+home).
-turn on ODIN
-plug in usb (both computer and phone)
-check re-partition
-ONLY use the 512 pit file. DO NOT use a rom.
-start ODIN and it should only take a minute. this will wipe your device completely but still allow you to access download mode.
- remove usb close ODIN
- start up ODIN again and connect usb
- use 512 pit and JP1 or JP2 rom.
- After flashing, this SHOULD give you an error and send you straight into recovery mode. you're looking for a specific error code. you need the error to have "sl01" or "sl10" (whichever, i forgot which it was) at the end of the path. if the end of the path has "m(something)" then use a different rom till you get the "sl10".
these errors are internal sd errors which your phone is experiencing right now, but the phone is fixable from the "sl10" error.
continuing...
- once you get the "sl10" error, close ODIN, unplug USB, turn off phone.
- go back into download mode.
- boot up ODIN with 512 pit and ULG2 rom.
- plug in phone
- start flashing.
this can give you two outcomes:
1) fixed galaxy S
2) error code with "m(something)" at the end of the error path.
if it's #2 do this all over again until it works.
This took me 3 days to figure out these steps, 10 hours each day. although it doesnt seem to make sense, my phone is working right now and it is where I am writing all this from. My only explanation is that Bell gets ****ty product from samsung. it's almost impossible to flash custom roms on a bell galaxy i9000 because the internal SD seems to have trouble being mounted.
i hope this helps and i hope it doesnt take long for you to fix this problem.
btw, if it does get fixed data connection wont be available. to enable it go to your apn settings. create new named "Bell" with apn as "pda.bell.ca" and leave all other options blank. data should be restored after that.

great!!! Another option I can try. Thank you.
I will try it out right after my work. so the idea behind this, is bricking it into recovery mode and S10 error code. and then fresh right back with correct ULG2 (is this correct? frist time heard about this rom)
anyways, I will post back with result.
Where can i find this ULG2 rom?
did it work?

yes, lucky I got one of my Bell Samsung phone work. Since I done a million times of refreshing and rebooting and etc... I am not sure what I did, now I still trying to remember last 10 steps I did to make this work.
But definitely, I could not have done this repair without jt_kyle. Thank you so much, jt_kyle.
jt_kyle, Thank you!!!
but none of JP1 or JP2 is givining me the error "tl10", I tried
I9000DXJP1
I9000TGYZSJP2
I9000XXJP1
I9000XXJP2
it come out error started with "m..."
I just keep refreshing each on PDA 3 to 4 times, and choose with re-partition or without. At the end I try a few another ROMs as well, I still get no "tl10", but somehow, just that magicical moment, the screen come out a set of commands that look like format sd card, so I got excited, fresh it with JL2. It is back to work.
still no clue the steps of fixing the problem.
one done, the another one to go.
any more ideas please, and I think I am really close to solve this one now.
Thank you All
FIX

if you have a way for me to give you this file i do have it just not sure how to do so because its 286MB
Could it be dead?
Since you have one of the infamous i9000m's it might also just be a dead SD card? You might try calling samsung and trying to get it repaired under warrenty as they are all under a year old (try and flash jl2 first even it will not boot up). It sounds like no receipt may not be an issue.
Lots of info from allgamer's list of i9000m issues in the general section.
At least you have one in the meantime!
same problem
Hey ive got pretty much the same problem that you had. Only differences are that I'm from Australia and am on Virgin network.
My phone became semi bricked one day when it restarted and since the 3 button combinations did not work i ordered in a USB jig which i received today. I used odin 1.8 to try and flash to I9000BVJJPD which i got from samfirmware.com but it ended up stuck on the logo screen vibrating once in a while. I decided to repeat it with no avail and began to use other roms and use .PIT.
This is where my phone became even worse and is now in it's current position; rebooting at the GT-I9000 page. I tried the method that jt_kyle suggested, substituting australian roms instead but it is still in the same position.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or should i just try getting a warranty?
Look for the ugjl2 complette and repeat what I said

I think I have this I9000M_JL2_JL2_JL2_JL2_UG_BMC file, is the same file that you are talking about? JL2 Complete?
I tried this file many times, it won't work neither.
for past one hour I played around this phone, trying to repeat the steps I did for the first phone. Unfortunately, nothing is working for me AGAIN!
but I got these error page all the time, like following...
update media, please wait
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(I/O error)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
I think that's bigest problem in my case, and for a lot of people in this forum. Do any people has a good solution for this???

[Q] stuck in odin

<ID:0/012> Get PIT for mapping..
does nothing else... Don't know what to do. I mean, I can't plug it out or turn off, right?
I tried to get back to the stock rom... and yes, i did an factory reset and cache wipe etc before..
Anyone who can help me?
NP, this thing happened to me... Is it because you clicked on re-partition...?
I cant guarantee, but i unplugged it, and it was soft bricked, i then flashed it without repartition checked.
Hopefully works for you
GL
you can indeed uplug it in this situation. Pull the battery and let it sit, go back into download mode and reflash the stock firmware.
If you check re-partition, make sure you have a pit 512 file that you are flashing. If you do not have a pit file, then make sure re-partition is unchecked.
Thanks both.
I did not check re-partition. I am not experienced with all this and i'm fairly new.
I just tried to flash the stock rom, because I couldn't boot up properly.
Ok. I'm trying to flash it again. It's actually doing more then it did before. I'll let you know
EDIT
OK.
I tried again but it was stuck again. Now at like 95% of the completion -.-
I tried for the third time. It keeps failing ....
anyone who can help me with this?
btw, i just noticed i posted this in the Galaxy S forum accidently. I have a SGSII instead. But I think it doesn't make any difference?
edit:
After the fourth time it worked..

Lol fourth time...
SGSII your using the correct firmware then right? The link i gave shouldn't apply to you it could brick your phone...
Yh, Odin can be annoying sometimes, you can either wait a while and try again later, restart and try again, or use heimdall. Or you could flash a zip through recovery (not sure if that last one works if you cant get past boot)

Umm no I used the right SGSII firmware. You didn't even gave me a link.
I'm sure I used the right firmware.
the first time I tried (when I posted), it got stuck before it even really started. second time and third time at 90-100%. the last time it worked.
I have no clue why it wasn't working, but this was the only solution for me (no, I couldn't boot, so I couldn't put anything on my SD and use CWM).
odin hangs often for the simplest of reasons, especially a loose usb connection -- test this by plugging into you pc or laptop and see if it stays linked or unlinks after a short duration or if the cable is jiggled -- you then know to hold the cable when using odin, or better still, get a replacement usb cable
