Thunderbolt video watching - Thunderbolt Themes and Apps

Hello there,
actually i don't have to watch videos on my Thunderbolt, i got television and computer, don't go out much so i have almost every entire day to stay home and watch things on big tv screen. But i notice that the stand with Thunderbolt seems to be designed for users viewing pages and watching videos in a more comfortable way, so i come up with the idea of watching some videos with my thunderbolt.
Then i did some dvd ripping things, and i got a question that i don't know which video format is better for thunderbolt, i tried mp4 with H.264 and common mp4 formats, the former one has a bigger video size but the point is i can't see any difference between those two video formats, i mean, since there are so close in picture and audio quality, i guess then everyone will prefer mp4 rather than mp4 with H.264, then why do those engineers develop mp4 with H.264? and i'm not sure which video format is best for Thunderbolt actually, so any reply will be appreciated.

I'm really liking this theme...Sorry I can't be of any help but you might get better luck if you posted on the right section.

On a screen the size of the thunderbolt, it really doesnt matter which format. its your preference but for space size I use the standard mp4...

Top Quality Movie Playback

THIS IS NOT A FIX, JUST A WORKAROUND FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY WANT TO WATCH GOOD QUALITY MOVIES ON THEIR KAISER
SOME CONVERTING MAY BE REQUIRED
Hi All,
I'm posting this to try and help people who are in this large boat of people claiming their TyTN II plays movies terribly.
I know it's all over the forum at the minute, the fact that people can't seem to play movies on their TyTN II, however I experience more than acceptable movie performance, and this is what I do:
I ensure my movies are .avi (if not, I use Kingdia Video Converter which works wonders)
I then Shrink the videos down to QVGA size (using Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn). This ensures that the file size is small, and quality is adjusted for that "just right" viewing size on the phone screen.
And to play them I use TCPMP with the FLV 0.4.2 plugin. Using the settings below:
in "Select Page" > "Buffering" configure it to match the following:
Normal buffer size: 1148KB
Preload at underrun: 5%
Preload for audio: 64KB
Also, if you are experiencing any "out-of-sync" audio, to remove any Lag, navigate to 'Select Page -> Advanced' and set 'Manual A/V offset +/-' to anywhere between'-100 to -300' (fiddle with it untill it's how you want it).
Now i could be getting this all wrong, and my idea of "Good quality Movie Playback" is not actually good quality. However, can I please suggest someone tries my methods above and post's their thoughts? And if you already use the setup above, what do you think?
My personal complaints on the Kaiser's movie playback are to do with the playing of the ripped DVDs over wi-fi from my desktop. It's annoying that my less powerful iPaq plays these files flawlessly, yet the supposedly more powerful Kaiser makes it unwatchably jumpy.
I'm not too sure about other people but I assumed it was the same? I've not actually tried encoding anything directly for the Kaiser to check performance. I've just accepted that for now unless the drivers are released it's just not a device to be used for playing back high quality video .

My two cents is that none of us want to convert movies and waste tons of time. if a movie X in format Y played well on the Tytn I, why can it not play at least as good on a Tytn II? Thanks for the advice, though this is not the solution most of users are looking for

I completely understand, if I could make a solution for everybody, i would
I suppose my suggestion is for people who perhaps want to watch movies while away on holiday, or on a long business trip, etc.
I just want to make people aware that you can watch high quality movies on the TyTN II, even if you do have to mess abit.
As for the time it takes to convert, it's surprisingly quick. We're not talking hours, but minutes.
Anyhow, let's keep our fingers crossed for the guys trying to create new drivers, they will be our true saviour!

Amen to that.
I don't have a huge collection to convert, but enough that it would be a major hassle to have a second encoding of everything. And the reason I like to encode to a higher quality is so that I can play the same vid on any machine I won and get passable quality. If I encode to 320x240 and play it even 1/2 screen on my 12" tablet, it looks horrible. 620 x 480 looks way better and evn look OK at full screen.
Plus, I'd like to just be able to play the little snippits I record on my camera. They are avi from a cheapo Cannon point and shoot which costs less than $200.
***QUOTE ALL REPLIES***
OK then, put it this way:
I couldn't care less if you wanted a file of 640 x 480, or if you find that my suggestion would be a hassle, in fact, I couldn't care less what you do in any aspect of your life, personally I'd rather read a book or watch tv...
The fact is, there is a way to play back movies with Excellent quality, and I have showed you that way. Take the suggestion, do with it what you will, but don't reply complaining that I haven't changed your life forever, i've simply offered a suggestion... that's it.

Once I get a memory card tonight, I would like to try your method. Additionally, I wonder if we could just convert the movie into 320x240 format directly. Sorry I am so new to TyTn II / Tilt as I just bought the ATT Tilt as my first PDA phone. However, I want to convert some DVD movies into memory cards so I can watch it on the road / travel.
Thanks for the suggestions / ideas.

Hi plchan,
to be perfectly honest, I've no idea how other file types play, as all the films I "Source" are mostly .avi's anyway. However TCPMP has codec for loads of different file types, so I don't see a problem with Shrinking different file types straight to 320 x 240.
You shouldn't have to convert the movies. That's the whole problem.

It's not you that people are angry with, it's HTC .
I think you may have put a few people, myself included, into defensive mode with your first post. It sounded to me like you were saying that the video playback problems on the Kaiser were a myth and so you had a few people explaining how it wasn't.
No-one's complaining to you, they're just giving their opinion on how the Kaiser has a video playback problem because from you first post you seemed to not see it.
Yeah your right se0siris, it didn't seem so at the time, but reading back my thread title does give off the wrong impression. I'll get something sorted out...
I know people aren't angry with me (or at least I hope not), and I, too, am angry at HTC for this issue, but watching movies is something I like doing, and am sure other people like doing too, so I just wanted to make people aware that it can be done (even if you have to do it a specific way, using a specific thing, whilst saying a specific magic word, and jumping up and down in a specific way, in a specific location )
And at least I've provided help to one person, which, at the end of the day, makes it all worth while
EDIT: I've added a BIG BOLD Subtitle to stop people getting the wrong impression.
All my movies are resized to 320*240.
It's indeed a bit of a workaround, but then again, smaller movies = less space = more movies
I tried it, and yes it is a nice workaround!

Re-encoding always seemed to me to be a pretty obvious workaround for the problem. Certainly, I've never bothered to drop a 750mb movie on my SD card... Not when I can drop 2 or 3 in that space after a couple of hours!
Mind you, some movies still have problems... Especially if there's a lot of screen action going on.

I agree, However simple things are often missed.
Regarding some movies still having problems... I've never had an issue.. But saying that, I do ensure all my movies are .avi (which I do anyway, regardless of whether its for the Kaiser, cos i can fit 4 or 5 .avi's on to a DVD and watch them on the TV if need be), and all are shrinked using Ashampoo.
I am very against re-encoding. i had a zune and I HATED how you had to rencode all my stuff just to watch it on the device.
That was partially the reason I sold it and bought this device, now I'm just hoping for a fix on the driver issue so that it will be justified.
Now how much faster is encoding a movie so it's big enough to fit on the main memory compare to placing a movie on the SD? Don't have the time to test, but if someone knows...please share your experience. If I was to watch movies on my tilt, I prefer to be smooth quality.
Yea, I am in the process of converting some of my DVDs also. I'm going to try the programs you mentioned because I'm currently using Aimersoft DVD Ripper and even at 320X240, I'm getting 900 MB files
One related question:
What do I change the buffer settings to on the Core Media Player? It's telling me I need to change them but I don't know what values to put in.
Thanks in advance,

Will we ever get smooth graphics on X1?

Im talking about watching movies, playing games - i dont know what the reason its so slow but it is painfully slow. its bothering me a lot. it seems like older much cheaper phones can play video much better than our phones.
is it a hardware fault (no hope) or a software fault ?
its a software fault
if you update your phone to some custom roms the phone runs LOTS faster
anyways, my videos and some 3d games run pretty fast on my phone.
not java games cause those arent hardware supported
I have to say that I am pretty darn happy with video playback on this phone... its fast and doesnt lag... the sound is even in sync with the picture unlike some devices I have tried before... I have not played any graphics intensive games on this phone so far though...
a game like archibalds adventure cant even scroll properly. i mean it looks like it was taken out of the 80s.
Maybe it is because this phone has up to 5 times more pixels then previous phones you have owned?
whats the point in it having 5 times the pixels if it cant cope with them

What videos? Are these videos, by chance a chintzy 320x240? I've tried avi videos in standard DVD resolution, 720x480 and 640x480 and they are both choppy as hell. There are far too many apologists for the really lackluster video playback on this device. I realize it's a driver issue, but when rich multimedia playback is one of the selling points, I think it verges on false advertising when it can't play accepted video standards. Have HTC pony up the money to Qualcomm for the right drivers and I think the X1 and a number of other devices in their stable can really start to live up to their claims.
Yeah, I have to agree. 5X the pixels means nothing if the phone can't handle them
No problem for me with video...
-I recode vidéo in 800*480 with HTC Touch HD Video Converter
-I use Windows Media Player to watch video
rom im using
im using touch it xperience 3.5 but i've heard touch it 2.2 was faster
from now on if it has qualcom in the hardware spec im gonna avoid it like the plague!
I gotta admit, just when I start being happy with the Xperia video.....
I'll look over at some movie my wife is watching on the iphone and just shake my head. The Xperia is NOT impressive in the video dept. I can get video to play to ALMOST lag free and it looks pretty dang good. But c'mon already! With the hardware capabilities of this phone, video should look all around amazing.

I have converted some Chinese tv serial episodes using magic video converter and they came out great, not too sure of the res but by memory its around 640x480 to 720x480 as you comment... no lag and sound is better than I expected... I also have a movie or two that works just as well, again Chinese stuff (as I am learning Chinese I find this is an interesting way to help out with both reading (subtitles) and listening)... I am using coreplayer and have it in full screen mode when watching...
Oh and I am by no means an apologist... if it was crap I would say so, but its not... but then I dont expect my phone to act or have the same capacity as my laptop/pc.... its a phone and does what it says on the tin...
I dont get it. I have a stock ROM and my video is perfect. I downloaded an Ipod converted (m4v) version of Superbad and it looks and sounds amazing FULL screen btw). All i had to do was rename the file to mp4 and it works perfectly! Maybe there is something else going on with you guys phones. I also have Anchorman, SemiPro, and several others running perfectly. Besides TF3D, i dont have any other plug ins installed.
I also have no issues with video playback,
I am running Touch IT 2.2 which i am not willing to replace yet because the ROM is fast as hell and bug free. Just used the HD converter in the sticky on page 1 along with a few speed tweeks from the Mark a Clienti thread and POW!! full screen, top notch quality res and not a single lag or frame drop in sight.
I have noticed that a lot of people are having issues with various applications on their SE X1's but i dont seem to have had any issues at all. I started with the clean ROM and made sure i installed all of my required apps and tweaks in one go, making sure to reset after each install. After that i just sat back and watched it fly, maybe i'm just lucky

You might want to check out what the bitrates are on those videos. Your average avi video is about 1.3-1.4 gigabytes in size for your standard 1.75-2 hour movie. That comes to about 1,500 kbs. Anything significantly less than that and it looks kind of muddy when viewed on a regular sized TV screen. Ideally, you shouldn't even have to recode video you ripped yourself. In theory you should be able to rip once and play on all your appliances that are video capable using a standard codec with reasonable settings. An avi file 1.3 gigabytes in size for a 2 hour movie is entirely reasonable and I highly doubt that you can achieve that with the X1 in its current state. I've tried extensively and the only way you can make it play with any level of smoothness is by dramatically reducing the resolution or dropping the bitrate precipitously. You can't just drag an acceptable video from your computer onto this phone and expect it to play acceptably the way it is right now. As for the expectation that it's only a phone I say that the drivers are the only thing that prevent it from meeting the expectations. I'll bet the hardware is there, but HTC just feels like being cheap. Heck, there are phones debuting at MWC right now that do full motion 1080p playback of h.264 video. The X1, which isn't more than a few months old, can't smoothly play back a 640x480 1,500 kbs video. At $700 retail and their promise of a full-featured multi-media device that is scandalous. I dare anyone to say otherwise.

You sound much more knowledgable than me so I wont try to argue with you, but I have quite a few avi files that are around the 800mb size that play very well and are crisp and clear even on a bigger screen (my laptop is 15.4 and pc is 19inches), in fact I find it pretty rare to have an avi file over 900 Mb for a standard movie (up to 2hours I would guess is pretty standard)... As another poster a couple of posts back mentioned, I notice a few problems that people are having that I dont... thank goodness as with my level of understanding I would be hard pressed to now what it is I need to search for to fix the problem...

Movies on the N1...filesizes!

Since the N1's resolution is pretty much full DVD res, are there any tricks out there besides watching a non-full screen movie to minimize the filesizes? I'm using handbrake and even with 50% quality movies come out at about 1GB a piece...
Using H.264. Any tricks?
Thanks.
-Mike
You need to reduce the bits per second. I've used handbrake, but I usually use SlySoft's DVDmobile. I get excellent results with file sizes between 500-700MB.
Just get Format Factory and use the default settings for HTC. I've been using that and my file sizes come out smaller than the original and quality is excellent. This was discussed in a thread just a month or two ago.
You can try Mp4forHD that was developed by Jandre here on XDA-Devs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478050
You can use the HD settings to produce an mp4 file that gallery3D can read without problem.
Thanks guys. I thought the quality setting in handbrake was VBR and would shrink the size more than it did, but I'll look into setting a hard limit.
Thanks for the heads up on those other programs to.
-Mike
The percentage encode option in Handbrake, despite being their preferred method, doesn't make any sense to me as it's too subjective based on the quality of the input file.
Alternatively, break out the calculator and work out what bitrate you need to use to get x size.
Just use the "target size" option instead. It's not "correct" but it's easy and you know what you're going to get.
You can also try WinFF if you want something really no-frills that gets the job done. It supports multithreaded encoding (pretty sure HandBrake does too). I belive the 64bit version of handbrake is noticably quicker if your hardware support it (which it will).
use DVD shrink and then convert in handbrake. Normal movie sizes are 500-600k after DVD shrink

i use handbrake at ~700-800b/s, good enough for me
I use handbreak and select "target size" for 700MB , quality is good. For music videos i do constant quality RF 23 most of the time it works well , occasional video needs extra tweaking.

Don't use H.264. I use anydvd to rip any dvd on the fly with dvdshrink to .iso files, then I use handbrake to make .mp4 copies for my phones. My Nexus gets files about 330mb and my Magic get movies that work perfectly at about 170mb. Adjust video output for each target device, maintaining aspect ration of the original movie.

Good job sherlock. When you're using Handbrake, you ARE encoding to H.264. Derp.
H.264 is best since the phone has a hardware decoder for it.
I'm confused. I dl a movie online and its usually about 700mb or like 1500mb which I guess is higher quality? I think the nexus can playback 720p but I don't know how to know if I'm playing a 720p video, so what are you guys watching that you can cut them in half to 700? My ignorant assumption is that 700 is DVD quality and 1400+ is HD? I've also seen torrents that were like 6,000mb so I'm not sure what if anything about the file's quality can be determined from its size.
great info. can someone suggest a movie player?

The higher the filesize, the greater the resolution, video bitrate, audio channels, or audio bitrate.
Just because you have a higher filesize movie doesn't mean you necessarily have better quality. If you're watching movies using the screen on the nexus, why would you ever need to make sure it's 720p? Granted, it'd look better on an HD screen, but on the nexus 800x480 screen it's just not needed.

[Q] 1080p mkv/ts/m2ts refusing to play

so here's my issue. it seems the video player itself has issues displaying 1920x1080 video. 1280x720 works fine, same video. same bitrate, same everything. this seems crocked.
do we know of any workaround for getting a 1080p to work. i've heard of people pulling it off, but i've spent three hours on this and i really believe it to be the player. i've tried third party clients and they're about 5fps. it's irksome.
help plz?
You know we have two different video players right? We have video player, and we also have movie player or something else like that. Try it.

What do you expect to get from playing such large videos on the Cappy? I transcode mine to 720X480 in .mkv and they are simply stunning with zero playback issues. The Cappy supports the low end HD resolution of 1280X720, not the Blu-Ray rez of 1920X1080. And it supports that rez in shooting video so that it can be played back on a larger screen. There's no benefit to playing back videos that size on the device. Resize them, you won't notice any difference in picture quality and you'll save a ton of storage space.
I have 315 bluray movies half are 1080p other is 720p so half of my media is watchable on my cappy and my tab. I use Tversity to stream to my ps3 and everything but if there was away to make it only transcode 720p to mobile devices or have a player that will resize it for us that would be awesome.

May be more of a codec problem than anything else.
While I never put anything bigger than 720p on my phone (since 1080p has no appreciable visual increase in quality on the phone screen, but a MUCH larger file size), I definitely have played 1080p on my phone before. Hence why I think it may simply be that 1080p MKV w/ certain codecs might not work. Remember that media files *legally* downloaded from the internet will often have slight variations in the parameters used when converting to MKV w/ x264/VC1/etc codec. Hence just because 2 files are "720p x264" in a Matroska container doesn't mean they are actually identically encoded. And the Galaxy S can sometimes be a bit picky about what formats it "automagically" supports and which it doesn't.
And by the way, as you clearly noticed, the "Video Player" app in Android is the only one to use the GPU to accelerate video playback. Other apps might work, but they will run the CPU way harder, and give you worse battery life. Monitoring the "time_in_state" to see what the CPU is running at, I can play 720p x264/MKV files with the CPU at only 400 MHz. Obviously, sometimes the default player won't play what you want, but it's much better to use it if at all possible.

This is the main reason I stick with the built-in player. I was on a flight from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Louis to L.A. on Tuesday and I watched 3 movies of close to six hours total length. Landed in L.A. with 31% battery still remaining.
my reasons for wanting to play 1080p is irrelevant to the scenario, i'd just like to see it done.
i considered a codec issue shammy, but i extracted a 60second sample from my crank copy and left it in 1920x1080mkv and tried it. no dice. i handbraked it to 1920x1080mp4 no dice. i once again handbraked it to 1280x720mp4. worked fantastical without any change in any settings except res. hence why i think its a limitation on res rather than codec/bitrate.
i am just IRKED all around at this. time to hit the irc and start screaming at people until somebody gives me an answer huh lmfao
Square peg, round hole. Hope you find a big enough hammer.

Yea man I feel ya, why should you convert your movie to a realistic resolution for a 4" screen when you can ***** at other people to make it work. Doing anything yourself is for chumps.

Its nice to be able to play 1080p why convert all your media when your ps3 and Xbox can play it at that size. Don't wish to lose quality on my other devices

How do you lose quality by resizing for the device you'll be playing on? All those extra pixels of HD resolution on a 800X420 screen do not yield better quality, they just require more CPU/GPU to process and more storage space. Nothing is gained by playing HD-sized videos on the Cappy. Absolutely nothing.
I own a small HD video production company in L.A., but don't take my word for it.
I was talking about playing the same media file from my Ps3 on my tv. I'd rather not convert my 1080p files to 720 just for my hand held I'd rather have a better way to do all of it using the files I currently have. Tversity works good but not perfect for over 3G but when I had my iPhone it would play pretty good using airvideo over 3G but there has to be something to make it all work

It would be nice to be able to do this I suppose..but if you don't mind...Why ?
If you play it on any other thing but your phone..you will not really benefit from having it this way..and also..you won't really have enough storage to hold it to be able to watch a full featured film.
Until Samsung gets off their asses and fixes the issue with making the usb-hdmi cable you will never get the output capable of seeing any difference than what you can easily do right now at 720p...If you want to ***** about something...that is what I would ***** about..They had those cables available for 1 month..and not many was ever shipped out to the stores when they introduced the phone...I've e-mailed them every week since October and the only reply is they are working on it...so...I'm not holding my breath on seeing it anytime soon since they are working on the next line of phones already..

i'll probably get xbanned by the-equinoxe for this post, but it'll be worth it.

I was doing my best to not "*****" at you "other people". If I wanted to ***** i'd be obviously *****ing, not laughing about it. How about I send you my 12TB of video and you can convert it all into 480p, would that suffice for you? since you have such an issue with what I do with my device and provide absolutely no helpful solution, you do it! I sure hope you have couple dual 12core opterons sitting around, because it's gonna take you awhile. currently, encoding crank.mkv time remaining: 1h5m. now realistically i'd never convert my entire collection, just whatever video I want to watch at the time. but guess what? When i'm leaving or doing something I do not have an hour to wait. It's almost faster to download a 480p copy, you realize that right. converting while dealing with 1080p is not fast, nowhere near it. I find it unlikely you have any experience in the matter, i'm sure i've put more time and effort into this than your useless 30 second out of line response, so "chump" take the attitude and leave my thread please.

Mac11700:
Why? Because I can. Everyone should want to do. You all see me trying to play 1080 on my phone as insane, and to me it's insane for you to NOT want to watch it on your device. I wont have enough space? i've got 32gb in my galaxys, i can fit three 1080ps. I am not stupid, and you all should not assume I am.
it's very irky that you all jump on a question without any real input on the scenario, except for the basic obvious simplest answer which really isnt helpful to the situation rather than putting in some thought and trying to solve the issue.
now: has ANYONE else made any progress with it. any input regarding 1080p on the galaxys could help solve this issue. please and thank you.
alright ive been doing some more fiddling and came up wiht the following results.
using container mkv, and AVC as codec.
i started with 1920x1080 crank 60s sample gone through handbrake reducing it to about 6mb.
1920x1080 through
1282x726 do not play. at all. unknown file.
1280x720 and below play without issue, and play damn well.
the file is exactly the same codec and container, just resized. so i believe it to be an issue with the player.
http://cerjturb.net/u/crank_test_1080p.mkv
does this play on ANYONES device inside video player.

Ooh, my internet shorthand has revealed me as a fraud. You got me.
Your insistence on trying to play HD videos larger than what the device is designed for brought to mind a good analogy. You sound like a guy who bought a nice sports car and is appalled at finding out he can't run it in the Indy 500.

Could it possibly be that your video is simply beyond what the player and/or the device is designed to handle? Square peg, round hole, I say. 1280x720 is indeed within the scope of the HD specification, so there is no fraud in saying the device can play HD content. It just can't play the high end of the HD spectrum. Live with it or get another device.
He's just trying to find away to not reconvert 3,000 hours of videos... if there was away for the computer to transcode to 720p to the device but leave it 1080p for the ps3 but not make 2 files for one video.... how hard is it to want that??? Tversity works for that but it don't detect the device as a mobile device that wants 720p it either does 1080 or goes way low and looks like crap... we want it to do both 720p for they device Ans 1080p for the ps3 at the same time.

I understand that, but it's like complaining that his old tube TV won't display HD signals. Or that his DVD player won't play BD discs. It just wasn't designed to do it. For a device to transcode 1080p to 720p on the fly would require a lot more horsepower than what the Captivate has under the hood. Accept and move on.
First, I understand why you want this; it's a matter of convenience and I don't blame you.

It may be the same codec and container, but what is the bitrate? A lot more data may have to be pumped through the i/o system and larger frames are going to have to be resampled. I'm not saying it is impossible on the hardware, but it might be. I seriously doubt that it's just a matter of some bug, oversight, or intentional disabling of 1080p without good reason.

[Q] Creating mp4

Hello all,
So i am trying to get the best experience possible after a quick viewing of gravity in 3d from a 2gb file a couple months ago.
I have done a lot of research and used anydvdhd to rip my store-bought Avatar3D to a 48gb file. Copy protection is stripped i believe and it will only let me make an iso because it is 3D.
I am trying to use handbrake to take that iso into the highest quality mp4 because i have to i think?
Although are people now able to go around the cinema? ive been out of it a couple months...
When im in handbrake it is telling me that the source must first be scanned...but i know i already did that.
Any help super appreciated.
Thank you!

I personally just use DVDFab for everything, and I like to use full sbs 3D 720p for my movies (also handbrake doesn't handle 3D encodes as far as I am aware).
Use this guide for encoding 3D sbs-files on your own:

The problem with DVD Fab is it is expensive and having that nagging watermark appear every so often isn't too appealing. Also, I was having a hell of a time trying to get it to rip my Hubble Imax 3D Blu-ray. It was chopping off the edges of the screen.
I also attempted to use IMToo, which worked, but the audio was out-of-sync.

Try following the guide above, it should work for almost all blu-rays. I just find DVDFab easier.
