Hi Guys,
Hope this is the right forum to post this in. Says requests go in 'general', so here goes:
Over the last few days I have scoured the internet as well as XDA for a root on the LTE version from AT&T, branded SGH-i957. I have come across multiple people as well across multiple threads who have also expressed interest. The purpose of this thread is to concentrate work on this in one location separately since rooting and ROM development seem nonexistent at the moment. Also, I am willing to donate to any developer who can help us out. If other people are also willing, we can start a running total to give some motivation.
I have experience rooting and flashing multiple devices, but I am lacking in developmental skills, but I am willing to try if any developer for the wifi version has ideas but no device to try it on. From my limited knowledge, I believe you need to start with a rooted device to pull the ROM Dump from the device to start development.
Root Status:
ROOTED! (Thanks Da_G)
Da_G said:
Here's an odin tar I put together to root the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9, along with a tar that contains the stock kernel.
You can return back to stock kernel immediately after flashing, or keep mine loaded up, works great either way.
Changes in this kernel:
ADB Insecure (gives you # root prompt at adb instead of $)
su, busybox added to ramdisk
script to install busybox and su at boot-up
init.d support for running init.d scripts at bootup
stock android bootanimation (so you can run custom boot anims)
Modded Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/sgh-i957-rooted-kernel-v2.tar
Stock Kernel: http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar
Open odin, put desired kernel .tar in PDA section, flash.
Install Superuser from market.
Done!
Don't have a device, so no overclocked kernel coming from me just yet, if I can get my hands on one expect it soon!

ROM Development:
N/A
Disclaimer: Not responsible for any bricked devices.
The 8.9 already had a weak support time. One ROM and one kernel. Then the ATT version comes out with a DIFFERENT SoC.
I agree. Please also looking to Bell Canada's version as well if possible... I am receiving it tomorrow...
Thanks for Posting this.
I will also donate 30 dollars .
I believe that 8.9 lte is the best tablet out there considering its low weight
I also am willing to assist in development although I have little if any experience this would be a good reason to get cracking on learning that stuff as I don't see anyone rushing to help us out. If there is a device willing to give it some work I also would pony up $50. 00 US greenback to the cause.
Currently Skyrocketing into Android Space!
You guys are so lucky. Canada doesn't get the free GSII-SR. I paid full price for my 8.9LTE ($650CAD!!+tax no less).
The whole reason I bought this even over the mythical 7.7 is because of the LTE chip and supposingly faster speed (I hope... 1.5GHz vs 1.2GHz). So at this point this is the fastest tablet aside from the Prime and should warrant more attention.
Sorry to get off topic a little, but does an launcher app like Go Launcher totally replaces Touchwiz?
Is it running as an APP?
What happens to Touchwiz when Go Launcher is active?
Esstenially does it slow my tablet down?
Thanks
Send a PM to XDA member toastcfh. He or someone on his team may be able to help you guys out. I have heard that root isn't possible, but I have no idea what that means. Did they lock the bootloader? AT&T is involved, so I am not surprised they locked things down...
Thanks motley. I will contact him and let you guys know what's happening.

Don't everyone send him a PM, dont want to flood his inbox.
I dont think the bootloader is locked. I think it is just an issue of this acting like a honeycomb cellphone.

Problem is, the VZW LTE 10.1 unit is still using the same Tegra SoC as the WiFi and 3G versions.
The AT&T/Bell Tab 8.9 is using a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC (same as the GS2 Skyrocket, T-Mobile GS2). And the Skyrocket/T-Mobile GS2 roots won't work because the phones using this SoC are all running Gingerbread, not Honeycomb.

This should be the firmware for the Galaxy Tablet 8.9 LTE

note: it is labeled as smartphone and not tablet, but the PDA matches mine exactly.
I'm still working on this. Sending out pm's to devs who have rooted similar devices.

What's scary is that the HTC Jetstream hasn't been rooted yet either, and it's been out for months. It uses the same SoC as the 8.9 LTE.
I'm sure the stupid high price didn't help the Jetstream though. Just not a lot of them ending up in the hands of the dev-minded.
What's encouraging, at least, is the BOGO deal on the 8.9 LTE/Skyrocket seems to be moving a fair number of Tabs in the US, which could lead to more dev support.

Yikes. Their bounty is $920 along with a free device, and still no one has done it. They do have a few devs actively looking into it though.

Keep us posted Orlando I for one would love to be able to root this and hopefully make it better than it currently is which suckyyyy!
I want to enable tethering from the 8.9. It seems att has removed this feature. I want to root to enable this functionality and I'm willing to pitch in as well. Unless someone has an app that works on honeycomb.

main issue is just finding a root exploit for honeycomb.

+1, I believe so, and they are on the DEV forum, but it looks like the roms are specific to the version of tab you got!!
So be very careful, the WIFI only tabs are "P1010" so make sure you the posts/external websites lnked on the forum of the ROM you are considering to ensure that it works on P1010.
As I almost started the install OVERCOME when I checked the external site, its states specifically not for WIfI Only.
But keep looking.
Good luck
I have a tab wifi -p1010 ,it was a present and it stays on dust because is no usefull.Samsung just wanted to sell to stupids people like us ,their interest are just money,so we will have no updates to gingerbread,honeycomb,etc...I saw in tab development a lot of custom ROM and i am sure that is possible to put in our ,,cheap tab,, a custom rom, but,as long our place is just in in Q&A section,as long we don.t talk with devs ,we will not succed.I am pretty sure that samsung sold a lot of wifi tab so, we should find a way that someone (devs/chefs) see us..

Yes. Buy yourself a proper tab. I will. And it will not be Samsung again.....
having search high and low there seems to be nothing for this tablet - ;o(
I do not understand why this can't be ported - it is on the same TI OMAP SOC that other gingerbread devices use.
See my technical question about this posted at this URL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357414
It can be ported, but devs does't bother to do it. They prefer new shiny superduper tabs, our is packed with old HW.
Well shoot, lets offer them some kind of gift then. Since it should be a matter of removing cell modem and sim drivers, shouldn't be too much work right?
I am willing to kick up 20$ to the dev group for a CM7 or GB update. Any other P1010 owner's want to chip in to such a fund?
Any dev's interested in some holiday bucks?
I would throw in £10 for a gb/cm port

I would throw in $10 for ics ported. About time for a bounty thread.
20 euro from my part for any custom rom with gingerbread
20$ at least from me. Wife bought this for me last year, feel bad cause I get hardly any use out of it now :/ would love to have some new life breathed into it.
U$S 30 from me. GB at least ! ! !....
It seems to me that this phone has reached death. All the forums seemed to have died (here,droidhive,rootzwiki,android-den(which hasn't really taken off) and where ever else) and quite frankly I'm disappointed. There really hasn't been any steps forward in ICS since I don't even know when (hw codecs/bluetooth/whatever else). Unfortunately I'm still 9 months away from upgrading.
I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining because I really do appreciate all of the dev work thus far(Hashcode, sparkyman, and others are the shiz), but its like we've hit a brick wall. ICS isn't complete and won't be and gingerbread doesn't seem good enough. I am grateful of everyones work. I just wish more Could be done.

why? It's about the development - the phone itself isnt dead.
But I agree. I was hoping to use this phone for 2 years (using 0.5 year now). I thought that eventually, we'd get ICS like we deserve. Guess not . I'm not sure how fast/supported this phone will be using gingerbread in 1.5 year
and except Droid 4 and RAZR MAXX..what other options we've got?!
galaxy no way (too big and overrated), and HTCs are all the same: big and no qwerty. nothing to get out of the crowd...like RAZR MAXX.
i used to be a fan of HTC, since S710 days..but now i'm bored by their lack of originality. no qwerty and no good processors for the small ones (<4" display).
not really dead everyone just faced the fact that ics will not happen for the d3 and blame the lack of ram for it..although we have proven that the d3 does and can handle ics and it does improve it no dev will continue to develop it due to the locked bootloader and the work involved to write all new kernals and bypasses fir it..there are 2 great gb roms in development..team haters (my fav) and mavrom{my 2nd fav}..both development crews hang out on droidforums stop by say hi and give their roms a whirl
Because its not development, its venting about our forgotten phone. And while I feel the same as you, its still not development

I noticed the same thing but dont really mind.
Im on a ATT contract for another year and 4 months or so.
Ive always wanted a droid and got the droid 3 because it works on att. It has to be the best sliding keyboard phone out their, and beats using any virtual keyboard IMO.
Even if development isnt strong, we have got it better then a lot of other phones. We have stable gingerbread roms and we can overclock it.
The Droid 3 is still a good phone and i know il be getting a good year of use out of it. .. hopefully then keyboard phones come back to life...
But i never used to post really on these forums but seeing they are kind of dead, i decided to become as active as i can to help around.
Is the droid three dead? Yes, in a way. The phone's bootloader is locked. This is the ONLY thing that is stopping any major developments on the Droid 3. If Moto, or google at this point, decided to unlock the phone... We would have Ice Cream sandwich 100% working (provided that they released the source code as well), and we would be eagerly looking forward to Jelly Bean. I often go on the Google+ Google account and harass them, I know I won't win but I am always hoping for a miracle.
As it stands now, there is a large chance that I will leave Verizon when my contract is up. Their handling of this phone as well as their pocketbooks has left a bad taste in my mouth. After 6/28/2012 (my birthday of all things), any phone being upgraded via contract will LOOSE their UNLIMITED data. You will have to purchase phones off contract to be able to keep your unlimited plan (It's only like $400 for a good android phone). Not only that, you will be charged a $30 fee just to upgrade.
So in conclusion:
Our phone is on life support. We are getting by with such developers as TeamHaters, Maverick, and Hashcode (who's still realasing AOKP updates for our phones), who are doing an excellent job keeping our phones working the best they can with what they have. Until there is a cure for our Bootloader issue... Our phone is stuck in intensive care, and Patch Adams is their to annoy the hell out of it.
Does anyone think googles new PDK will help our device? its supposed to allow low level api for easier porting of android to hardware. Think this could bring around any fixes? Ofcourse the bootloader will be locked but it mite make the making of kernels not take 6-8 months as hash said and help him out.

*sigh* I hate to be the one that has to come in and burst everyone's bubble every time someone makes this argument, but the problem is not the locked bootloader. If the bootloader was unlocked, we'd be in the same exact position. Hashcode has stated this several times. We'd still be without hardware codecs, we'd still be having Bluetooth issues, we'd still have all the same issues because they're all a matter of hardware limitations or lack of documentation on certain parts of the proprietary hardware.

It's more of a "TI doesn't support hardware codecs for devices >1GB data". TI doesn't release source code for those binaries and isn't obliged to, so that's not really an argument that should be made. It's simply that our phone was cursed from release.
EDIT: And as of now I can no longer say "our phone" as I jumped ship to the Razr... goodbye, Droid 3 community, you will be missed...

ICS is majorly different from previous releases under the hood. It uses a different kernel; things have been made more efficient; the APIs have been updated to allow for more possibilities for app developers; certain parts of how the system overall operates have undergone drastic resigns; etc.. All of this came at the price of needing better hardware to incorporate new features, but I say it was well worth it and is a very large difference even without the interface changes.

but anyway hashcode would be able to trial and error approach without deeming the device unusable (loading kernels, and modules and stuff)
it would certainly help to have an unlocked bootloader.
but without source of course it would be time consuming and without knowing when it would have success

This thing is a brick in my pocket compared to galaxy line and most htc phones, check out the quad core HTC One X w/beats audio or the galaxy note etc for "originality" but seems like all manufacturers are using a very similar forum factor. I agree the qwerty is nice to have but it doubles the size of the phone as well(unless maybe desire z) so you kind of have to choose.

Yes i'm VERY Happy to see I will be seeing Jelly Bean before the end of the year. I think AFTER that is when i'll think about rooting the phone so I can get rid of all the damn AT&T bloatware on there.
I am pretty computer savvy and i've built several of my own computers over the years but the thought of rooting the phone kind of intimidates me because I know almost NOTHING about the process and I still as yet have to see a clear thread that says "This is how you do it, This is how you undo it" in case something goes wrong with the phone that's not software related and it needs to be returned or whatnot.
Also there are alot of threads about custom rom versions but they say you need to have the "base" 4.1.1 version first which again i'm a bit lost at trying to sift thru all the forum posts to find. Heh.
P.S. Annnnnndddd...i'm a retard. Somehow right after I made this post when it went back to the post list page for this forum now right there in my face is a post titled "Jellybean rom leak - step by step guide for updating" LMAO.
I do have a more pertinent question of someone with some know how here though also. I saw that Moto has started selling the developer version of this phone which i'm assuming has an unlocked bootloader as from what I understand that is kind of the point of the developer version. So I am curious, once someone has this developer phone will that make it easier for someone to develop something that is easier/faster/more stable to root for us poor schmucks who can't afford the 400+ duckets this phone is costing and also since we already have the phone to begin with?

Yea which is kind of sad considering. I mean it seems to me the only really bad thing about this phone i've found from using it is the lack of much user ROM and the stupid low Mah battery they put in it when the one from the Maxx will fit almost equally as well, and would have fit perfectly if the phone had been developed around it. <sigh>
It seems from the # of forum posts that the Galaxy S III is pretty much "THE" phone to have. I have a friend who just got one a month after I got my Atrix and she likes it well enough, but I can't understand what idiot at samsung decided it was a good idea to leave out USB Mass Storage on the thing, although i've heard that's getting officialy fixed, or may have been already since I don't really follow that phone.
The phone I upgraded from was an old Samsung with a physical slide out keyboard before the android days and the thing was junk to me, about all it was good for was texting because my fat fingers worked well with the physical keys. But almost all the apps on it were useless junk and alot never even ran. So i'm kind of burned out on Samsung right now.
I've been in computers for years and have learned to trust Motorola for reliability and stability and while their products have not always been hugely inspired or innovative, they have always been reliable to me.
I had thought I saw one of the people who seemed to be doing development for this phone in a message say they already had a developer phone on order or whatnot. But maybe it was just my wishful thinking. In any case I hope this phone dosnt die some slow horrible death in here just because it's not as bright and shiny and full of awesomeness as some other phones out now. Once the Jellybean update officially comes out for the phone hopefully there will still be good people in here who can easily make the phone rootable and that will pretty much be good for me for the 2 years till AT&T says I can get the next shiny new toy out then. LOL. Custom roms are nice but i'm mostly interested in being able to get rid of all the AT&T crapware in the phone because it's pretty much just useless spacewaste to me.
Itll come out December 31st

If you have a locked bootloader each partition is signature checked for your device and region/carrier. Bell files will brick ATT phones and vice versa thanks to locked bootloaders.

Since the Atrix 4G-era no Motorolas have gotten bootloader unlocks if they were meant to stay locked.

Are you sure you will be able to retain root with the update? What method did you use to root in the first place by the way?
Thanks.

I really can't speak to the OTA, but I've read that those who installed the JB leak had success with Voodoo Root Keeper. It worked for me when the RAZR got ICS finally... I am just assuming that it will work when we get the OTA.
Deep rooted in the mAtrix HD...

Thanks, is it this one? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
So it would have a better chance of retaining root with the OTA than SuperSU Premium?

I saw on your other thread where you tested the various methods to root the Atrix HD that you mentioned rooting might take you off the OTA path. Do you mean to say that if I use motofail2go to root the phone, there is a chance that I may not be able to get the OTA update to JB when it rolls out?
Thanks.
When is development for the device going to pick up? There's not much out there! I know it just came out but I expected more. I installed the Sky high Kernel after I rooted and I really like it. I have my A15 cores overclocked to 2.1GHz and have all cores undervolted, as well as overclocked the GPU and the device is totally stable!! My only issue with root/SkyHigh kernel (not sure which is the issue) is that my screen mirroring does not work. It will try to connect and say hardware issue. Anyways, everyone just post your thoughts, opinions and such about the device and development. I'd love to hear ideas and info out there. This device is AmAzInG!
Yep the 8.4 got a kernel but nary a peep on any rom activity. I think the problem is that most developers that wanted a high res tab like this already bought the Pro model and are not upgrading to the S.
I'm waiting on someone to port CM over so I can go pure Android and get rid of this excessive Touchwiz javascript lag on pageloads. For that I'd happily give up the gimmicky stuff like split screen that I rarely use anyway.

I personally have been a fan of the Touchwiz UI. And actually like and use a lot of its features. This is a very capable tablet and I think devs will arise soon.

Why not? The Tab Pro line has CM.
There will be more development when we have a working recovery. No one really wants to drop mods if there's no way to flash them. Hopefully Team Win will read my email.

Other than the screen? Same. Unless a Dev is really wanting amoled screen, we might be Sol for a while. Sammy needs to stop making new tabs every few months.

No, only the Qualcomm based Snapdragons, not Exynos based models like the Tab S.

Ur right. Forgot about the Exynos thing.
I'll tell you this,if we get anxious about a new device and the possible abilities. so will the devs
Recovery works well so it won't be long

Beans is looking to bring his super fine Alliance rom to our tab. First he looking for donations to help him buy one. He's a stand up guy so any money you give him, will go towards product purchase and development.

I would disagree. It's better looking, lighter. Software and hardware perform much better

I'm just waiting on a deodexed ROM for T700. Then I'll start theming.
This place is dead. Generic S6 forum is not much better. We have root, but nobody is doing anything with it.
Yeah.. it's seriously making me think of switching devices. I'm used to many custom roms, unlocked bootloaders, xposed, etc.. and this isn't cutting it for me. Sure, great device but.. I'm just not feeling it.
What is it you are wanting? We have cleanrom and a few other debated options and an available framework to let you customize the crazy outta your touchwiz. As far as AOSP or CM, give it time. It's a new device, a lot of hands are on it and after some time, more options will be available. When I bought my G2 on release day, it was a month before root and another before good rom options showed up and even longer before stable rom options we're brought to the table.

I don't understand why people buy a phone like this an expect a ton of development on it. Everyone knows AT&T locks bootloaders so there will be no AOSP ROMS for this device, especially with it packing an exynos processor. The root exploit has been patched in 5.1.1 so don't expect root unless you plan on tripping KNOX or never upgrading again. People really need to do research before they go out and buy a phone. If you need that much development, buy a nexus.

Exactly. I knew this going into getting another ATT phone (Active). It was either getting a phone I knew would work out of the box or getting a toaster oven with an 810 SOC. HTC and LG both failed this year IMHO and OPO2 will also be throttling back the 810 2.1 SOC. I wanted the active because of the bigger battery, but if those wanted ROMs on a S6 they should have just bought an international model outright.
I bought this phone expecting no development. The fact there's even root and roms for it is more than enough for me.

I went from a Nexus 5 (chronic flasher) to a no root Note 4 (now obviously s6) and I discovered that not having root or a million roms to flash caused almost zero issues. Having root and debloated roms on the s6 makes me completely happy. I just flashed XtraStoLite and it's awesome, even more customization and you choose only Samsung apps you want.
I haven't even rooted yet. Works fine for me. First phone I didn't root right away.

Yeah, the issues that made me feel like I absolutely had to root in the S4, S5, N4 are pretty much non issues with the S6 so I'm happy not rooting.

Probably the built in themer.
For everyone: when you buy a phone with a locked bootloader, you buy a phone that will have very limited development support (if a hack is found all the better, but don't count on one being found, they ain't easy to find). If you buy a Lamborghini are you going to complain you can't put the turbo you saw on your friends Mazda on it?

Alliance Framework and soon 3minit. You just need to flash a deodex ROM and to top it off, we are now seeing that you can flash roms from the international thread. I will attempt this myself 4th of July weekend and post videos on my channel if successful.
Honestly I think it's quickly getting to the point where rooting will be an afterthought. I rooted my S6 Edge and flashed back to stock within a week.

It's not hard, most are just an Aroma installer. I'm running one and it works great. The only weird thing was the Aroma installer screen flashes while you're selecting options you want to add/remove. I have an ATT S6 as well.

So I can Flash the deodexed ROM linked earlier with Flashfire then add the alliance framework with flashfire too? Still Kinda new to this(Had the s4 rooted and never flashed anything till after getting the s5 which was rooted with a custom ROM) and it seems like its a different method every phone. Im trying to read up on the different threads but dont have much time usually. Need to take a day and figure it out. Thanks for the help.
I'm not asking for cm or aosp (neither appeal to me), and neither do i want some shoddy kludged together community rom.
What I'd like is to see something like Xposed,,which works without issue on a completely stock+root install.
I've been doing this since the G1 days, and i just dont have the time or patience for it anymore. I have a hobby that to me, is far more satisfying and fun than jacking around with phones.
All i really want is to remove the volume warning and the redundant wifi notification.

Xposed is in alpha or pre alpha for TW devices. So it is in the works, just a ton of bugs and the install is pretty in depth at the moment.
Don't know about the volume warning, but the WiFi notification is easy if rooted. Get the CSC editor and search for WiFi. Blank this value and reboot.

I have up on roms (TW or AOSP/CM) based a long time ago due to glitches and bugs. The last thing I ever did with root was adaway but now many all developers and websites are getting content past adaway and ABP, so no point there even.
I had a problem with my Tab S not taking the lollipop update after rooting then un-rooting which kind of soured me it in general. I got it flashed back to stock at bestbuy and updated, but settings menu still shows status as Custom even though download mode shows Knox 0x0
