Voice call echo issue - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently bought my Gnote from Newegg and found there is an echo when I make phone calls. I think the phone is a French version since there were french written on the phone box. It's just the people on the other line that can hear the echo. I narrowed it down to the 2 mics on top of the phone. When I cover one of the mic holes, there is no more echo for the other person.
I'm wondering if my phone is defective or is there a setting that I can change to stop this. I tried turning off the noise reduction and that help reduce the echo a bit. The phone case I have on it doesn't seem to be affecting the echo. Has anyone else have this problem? Phone was already unlocked from the box so I assume it's been rooted. Please help.

I would return it. I've had several Samsung devices with this flaw and it seems to be a hardware issue.
There is no way of getting this fixed by software solution.

Had this problem with 2.3.5 and get solved with 2.3.6
Meanwhile, when placing a call, just press menu and deactivate NR.
Let me know if that works

[Q] Problem with in-call volume

Hello to all,
I have using my Galaxy S without SIM card for a while and now when I put one I notice a problem with volume level when making or receiving calls. The indicator show that the volume level is at maximum but I barely hear the voice when someone is talking to me, even when I am at close and not noisy room. When I put hands-free or put the call in speaker mode everything is OK - I can hear what the people are talking to me.
I search in the setting and put everything for sound in max but there is no change....
I read in the forums about the hidden service menu and I saw that there is an audio section with sections headset and handset but I don't know if this will solve my problem, because I don't know if the problem is software or hardware..
My phone is Galaxy S I9000 - international, Eclair 2.1-update1, JM1, not rooted. I make factory reset just before posting this thread and the problem is not solved....
If anybody have similar problem or anybody have a solution or ideas how to solve this, please help me!
Thanks,

I haven't noticed any issues with my Note so far but if your phone has already been rooted maybe its a software issue. Have you tried using a different software for it, perhaps one of the roms on the forum here. I am currently using rocket v8 with abyss note kernel 2.1 and things are great. I'm no expert but it's worth a try.
I also have this echo issue. This is especially the other end who notice this. I use a Swiss Sunrise SIM card. I tried another SIM from Swisscom and no echo. So i call Sunrise who is working on this.
So at the moment i cannot tell if this is a Gnote or Provider problem.
I will try the Mic suggestion but i thought Gnote has only one Mic??
Where are these Mic located?
I found where are these Mic located. In the quick guide comming with Gnote it is said that top Mic is used only when Speaker or video recording are activated.
Maybe this Top Mic is actvated all the time! How can it be deactivated?

Look here, same issue...

During the call, you need to go to menu and turn off noise reduction. This will solve the echo problem but is only set for that call, ie you need to do this every time.
There is a MOD for this:

However.. since I upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.6 this problem seems to have disappeared for me.

I am GB 2.3.6, and i still have this echo issue.
Same problem here but only a few times. Thought the echo was caused by coverage reception?
Its mostly caused due to RAM shortage,e.g.if a large or too many applications are running in the background at the time when the call came in.
I've had this echo issue for the callers in the other end from when I got my Note in December. Two version of GB and now finally ICS and the problem is still there. Today I went to the service center and the changed a lot of parts in the phone (mainboard, mic, receiver ...) and when I got home the problem was still there. I've been troubleshooting this for a few hours and found that using the phone without any case has the problem, with a case it's worse. And, when I remote the back cover of the phone, the problem goes away completely. Anyone else still have the problem and experiencing the same thing? Just call someone, confirm the echo and then remove the back cover of the phone, for me that resolves the problem completely every time. So, what did Samsung do wrong here? Are the sound travelling in the back cover from the speaker to the bottom microphone? Are there any pressure made by the back cover which cause this? Why is the problem worse when I add a case on the phone?
My solution to echo
I had the same problem. My solution is/was simple -- hold the earpiece tight into your ear. The echo for the receiver goes away.
The echo was caused by the phone picking up the sound from the Note's earpiece. I always have the phone on max volume so this made it the worst.
Latest CM9 nightly turns dual mic off by def.. Fixes echo.

I got my phone completely fixed today. After realizing that removing the back cover fixed the issue, we also found that removing the pen fixed the issue. So, replaced all back plastic, new back cover and new pen, still problem wasn't fixed. So only thing not replaced was the screen, replaced the screen and problem was fixed. The service-tech told me after that the antenna part from my phone and the new parts was different. I had one of the first batches Note's that came to my country. Now the phone is perfect, even when I have it in a case which did amplify the problems before.

My note developed this problem after my charging post was replaced by the authorized service center. Probably something happened when they opened it and re fixed. When I complained of the echo problem they reluctantly took the phone but only to return it after hard reformatting which did not solve the problem.
I noticed the the following:
1. Echo disappears if the phone is pressed hard to ear thus preventing sound from reaching secondary mike.
2. No echo if back is removed and used exposing battery, etc. I am still puzzled by this as sound should still be traveling from speaker to mike.
3. After several weeks of experimentation, hundreds of test calls, reading several posts (many gave placing pieces of visiting card over speaker and mike after opening up the phone and closing the phone-it did not work for me even after several attempts), I found a solution which worked well.
4. Close/seal the secondary mike hole at the top with a sellotape and test. and it worked well. Then I opened up the phone (9 screws, removing back with priser, etc) and placed a small piece of vising card strip inside the mike hole and closed the phone. Thus no unsightly taspe is visible. You can even sell it in second hand market if you haste your phone!
No problem ever since. You can testy it yourself as it is easy to place the tape.
My experience
Sorry for my englisn. I wanna share my experience of fighting with the same echo problem in my note3. I tryed to solve problem about mounth. I have stock rom no rooted. When android changed to kitkat I anderstood that problem was in hardware. I opend my phone and tryed to isolate upper microphone. No effect. Yesterday I brought my phone to service. Master assessed upper and lower microphones by *#0*#. I heard myself that lower microphone was much more queit. He cleared canal of lower microphones and problem was solved!

[Q] Very strange problem with sound...!

Hi there,
I have flashed my ROM to 4.4 official but afther that I've got a very bad problem with my sound.
After I answer a phone call or call someone myself, my cell phone's sound doesn't come out of speaker and it comes from the hearing speaker on top of the cell phone (The speaker that when we call someone hear his voice from it). This problem continues until I restart the phone.
What's my problem? What can I do to solve it?
Oh the pain and agony you must be going through now.

Microphone cutting out during Speakerphone calls

Dear all,
As stated in the subject line, I am experiencing issues with the mic while on speaker. So this is happening whenever I used the speakerphone. It will work fine(ie the other side can hear me talk) but after awhile, it will stop working(the other side cannot hear). I will then have to take it off speaker and put it back on. That seems to work. This happens during normal mobile calls and also whatsapp calls. Unfortunately, when trying to record something with Audio Recorder, I haven't hit that issue, and it was recording for more than 4 minutes.
Has anybody else run into this problem? I am running a completely stock Note 5 out of the box, on 5.1.1.
Thanks in advance!
Best,
Ben

Same issue here, I'm using note 5 duos N9208 64gb. Please somebody help us...I think is some software issue
Edited my other post, putting the information here where it belongs. I found out how to replicate this bug on a SM-N920I with Android 5.1.1 thanks to a rooted ROM, 3.10.95-SkyHigh_TW_v3.9 UpInTheAir #1.
Turning on speaker AFTER a call connects mutes your own microphone, with no subsequent fix by turning on/off speaker during that call.
Turning on speaker BEFORE a call connects (i.e. you have to make the call) does not mute your microphone.

hi
Found your issue interesting and decided to test according to your theory (set out above )
As i use speaker quite a lot when making calls.
Firstly i have a N920 C , not rooted ,stock Rom .Tested calls speaker (numerous times ) with my Note5 and Note 3 .
Repeated , test after call connects and before calls connect etc etc .
.Well i was relieved , that speaker works 100% .No issues.
So its seems to me,
your bug could be limited to certain Roms or software ..? or did you perhaps use Package Disabler to disable some processes and now have a knock on effect ...no ?
hope you can sort issue out .!
Good luck .
Thanks for your reply and thank you for testing it out! I didn't use Package Disabler at all. I'm trying to find out how to go back to Stock ROM, but the baseband version of N920IDVU2AOKC is hard to find and I have, too late, stupidly realized I don't know how I can do it without having the stock ROM to start with.
Edit: Google is my friend. Samsung-firmware website...
Edit 2: Google is NOT my friend. That was a premium cash grabbing page. Link removed.
Edit 3: Google can be my sometimes buddy. http://www.galaxynote5update.com/ga...firmware-australia-and-new-zealand-singapore/
Edit 4: Fine. I'll use Smart Switch since nothing else is not pay locked. :|
Same issue with MM rom...

[SOLVED] In-call Microphone issues

Hello everyone,
First of all, I would honestly like to praise how good the Z3 Compact looks, feels, and performs. I got it 2 days ago (from a non-Sony supplier), and I don't regret investing in it.
I have a problem, though, and it's the only one on this device - the microphone during calls. There's this echo that the other party hears when calling me, and on top of that, my microphone's quality is not the best.
Since it's new, I don't want to open it up and see what's wrong with it, but my guess is that both microphones (the second belonging to the camera) are on during calls and that's what makes the echo - the other party's voice is heard via the second mic and it gets sent back to them with a small delay.
Is there a software-related solution to this? I'm running the latest SliMM (6.0.1) with an unlocked bootloader. Thanks in advance for all your help!
Its most likely just a software problem, try fiddling with the Call Settings in Settings and see if anything there helps alleviate the problem if not, try using another Audio Engine ( e.g Beats Audio, Viper ) and see if that helps.
Also check if its a signal related problem, slurred speach and cut audio are signs of low/poor cell signal. Good luck

Thanks! I will definitely mettle with audio mods, but as far as Call Settings go, I've already disabled the "Mic noise suppression" feature, which makes a difference, but the echo is still present.
The bug is still present, by the way. Should I find an actual fix for it, I will update this post.

Update: It has nothing to do with the Android version nor the ROM...the microphone picks up whatever the speaker plays during a phone call.

I had similar issue. I disabled 'Microphone Noise Suppression' in call settings and it helped. Give it a try.

I have already done that, a long time ago, but it doesn't help. It does make my own voice sound more clear, if anything.
EDIT: I seem to have found the cause of this problem, and more on that can be found here. The thing is, the Google App and the "OK Google" feature are active in the background at all times, which might be what causes both microphones to always remain on. So what's the solution? Get rid of the Google App - freeze it, delete it with Link2SD, whatever.
I will definitely keep checking if that truly is the solution, and I'll definitely ask the mods to close this post, once everything's clear.
