If Windows / Flashtool does NOT recognize the phone in Flash Mode anymore (Turned off, back button pressed while connecting to the computer's USB) it's a hard brick and it would make yours the third one around here being hard bricked.
This means you're actually out of "do it yourself at home" options to resurrect the device.
While there are two other phones with the exact same problem we have no intel about how a authorized Sony Ericsson Repair Center is going to tackle the repair or how much they are going to charge for the repair (as I'm pretty sure they will void the warranty after diagnosing the brick).
IF you're going to bring, or send, the phone to a SE service center you better ask them for a quote on the repair to avoid a bad awakening at the repair costs (i.e. new phone would be cheaper than a repair - we don't know if they would simply resurrect the device through the means of JTAG'ing or if the would replace the motherboard or whole phone).
Another option would be to find a phone repair shop around your area possessing a JTAG RIFFbox and required skills to JTAG your phone. That could be the cheaper option.
If you somehow get the phone repaired my recommendation would be to stay away from boot-loader unlocking. If you look around the problems you may face ("does not charge anymore" / "hard bricked") is not worth the little 'being able to flash a custom kernel' advantage you gain. GingerDX and a few other ROMs run perfectly fine on the stock kernel - and I'm sure nikolaa and Doixanh will find a way to make ICS (if it can be done) run on stock as well.
Anyhow, my sympathies for your brick - I hope you can get it sorted out one way or another.
do you have a 2011 w8? I remember that there was someone who posted earlier with a hardbricked w8
Maybe those w8 owners should stay away from unlocking their bootloader
yea..mine is a 2011 w8 , i think w8 should not be bootloaded ..it has some problems ~ i did everything correctly but after my phone rebooted it went dead
I think you should get it jtag'ed (sorry if its spelt wrong, the x8 has a small keyboard)
sent from my x8 running gingerdx
this is why i'm afraid to unlock my bootloader, i've tried twice but no luck at all.
so i decided to stick on stock kernel..
Hmm...would you mind opening the back cover of the phone and looking for text on the stickers that says xxWxx? Where x are numbers. This might prevent other users from bricking their devices.
Sent from my x10 mini running the latest version of minicm 7.
haha i sent mine to repair already ...still on warranty ..lucky the retailer didn't know my phone is rooted..still what is so good about unlockinng bootloader?
If you have realy W8 not X8 then your phone is death!Read carefuly before you do something, please! My sorrys!!

unlocking bootloader gives you wings!Like red bull....ha-ha-ha!Realy,you can then install custom kernels and newest custom MiniCM 7 rom with dual touch! Its fun!!!
man..i wan dual touch..i think imma try again once my phone is repaired..
just as aloy has indicated, next time before you do anything with your phone check the back for the code. Because every case that fails it sets a warning to all who want to apply unlock to their cells, and most important of all, alerts the original author that there might be something to improve on recent models.
Last but not least, read CAREFULLY the instructions first before your third attempt. Make a log of what you have done so in case something happen again post it in detail here so others could point out what potential problems may have been.
I wish you best luck on your next attempt.
huh? how do you see the back for information? xxwxx? what does it mean?
imagine you need to change your battery or SIM card you need to open up the back right? Look at the backside of your cover after you yank it open. There you have it.

Hello,
Few days ago I bought my girlfriend an X8.
Since I have too an X8 with all the root and such things done I though it might be a good idea to do that on girlfriend phone.
BUT, second day after buying that phone, and trying to get exact modifications I did on my X8 , her phone got hard bricked and I couldn't boot it up, not even to recovery mode since computer usb didn't recognize it anymore...
I think i was in phase while trying to get root access..
So, I went to the shop to get my replacement phone wich they did gave me...
Soon after I got home, I was trying again to make same modifications, and it was sucesfull... I installed custom rom, with root access and that was it...
BUT here comes the problem - while trying to use Titanium Backup , i was constatly getting the message that my phone isn't rooted so I downloaded root checker from market and yes, it said that i'm not rooted... Funny thing, busybox and superuser worked just fine...Then i though it might be a problem cause I didn't update superuser on latest version, so I did it, and now the superuser told me i'm not rooted...
To make long story short, i came up to flash stock rom, and then back to custom rom to make clean install again, this time I wanted to unlock bootloader too to put a custom kernel for that rom, but after the process, phone quickly restarted 2 times and from then it doesn't want to boot up, just like the first phone, doesn't react on power button not even to usb...
I'm so frustrated because on my X8 everything went fine, and i did on her exactly what I did on mine, but I bricked her 2 new phones and I don't know what to do next
Is there any way to back it up to life again??? (i think they won't replace my phone again at the shop)

what custom room you using to unlock bootloader?
You can't even use the Repair section of the PC Companion?
what ROM do you use when you try to unlock bootloader?
I was using stock rom (Elcair) when i tried to unlock bootloader...
and none of the usb methods works cause it doesn't get recognized by PC...
Uff...to any hard brick, your phone should get flash mode with fleshtool or seus/pcc..maybe its some mistake..to root phone, easier way is with fleshtool..

this is strange.. not reacting on usb..
when u turn off the phone then plug usb cable + pressing back button i call that downloading mode.
I don't know how to help u anymore..
btw what rom u're installed when the phone restarted twice? is it overclocked?
just curious
It was stock rom -> Eclair 2.1
No overclocking modules were installed...
I've came upon some similar thread on the internet, the guy had same problem, and someone suggested him that the only way to restore the device is to put it on RIFF JTAG box
Links are here:
jtagbox.com/jtag-news/riff-jtag-sony-ericsson-xperia-x8a-se-shakira-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
youtube.com/watch?v=ujH_IpsskLg
....
So, my question for now is - Can I buy JTAG box from ebay, and soldered PCB for X8 from here ( multi-com.pl/index.php?itlskel_lang=en_US&itlskel_pgid=details&id_pr=8466 )...
Will that work it out ? Question goes to JTAG users hopefully.
Please modify URL's since I can't put full URL's yet
you just bought the phone rite? send it to service.
no need to buy anything to do it yourself. That riff box costs around $150 and there are people in various cities who might be able to repair your phone (check website of riff box) with fees but try with SE service centre first. You might get it done for free.
If you have followed the steps it really should not end up like that. It is really discouraging to read posts like yours. It makes me ponder twice whether I should go and try the unblock my bootloader myself.

I think SE center won't cost $150 (and if cost that much rather than buying those tools or pay SE i will buy another x8 it cost cheaper than that).
I agree with you, send it back to SE center and tell them u're upgrading phone software but the the power or internet down in the middle of process and your phone dead.
No, the thing is, i've already told them I was upgrading my software and phone crashed when I swaped my first phone, so if I send them back another phone in that short time I'll become suspect, and I highly doubt they'll accept my warranty
btw. I really don't know what could be the reason for bricking
Basebands versions were xxx015 on the both devices...
men try again with seus
just turn your pc/windows on safe mode with networking
ive experience that
then
do this like i said in other thread
try it again with this steps
open pc companion (dont plug your phone)
choose support zone click start
select phone software update
click start
then CLICK REPAIR PHONE
and that its you know the next step
you will see initializing AND downloading the phone software
Will try it tonight but I higly doubt since phone doesn't react with LED anyhow
Thank you for your tip anyway

There's nothing wrong trying right?
Besides if they're not accepting your warranty you will pay anyway...
And if SE center tell you to pay ask them how much in front before doing any reparation.
Maybe $10, $20 etc i doubt it will cost as high as new phone.
help... i am also in the same situation..my phone bricked when i was bootloading , now its completely black and it cant on ...when i connect to pc , pc cant detect ..help please..i just bought my w8 about 3weeks only ..my dad's present ...hlp please

What's your qualification?
You're a hardware engineer / hardware (repair) technician / hardware hacker?
No?
Stop dreaming about home brew repairs (as there is NO option left unless you fulfill the requirement from above, in which case you wouldn't post here) and either send it off to SE or throw it into the trash.

Firstly, you obviously didn't find this thread which would've spared you the trouble.
Secondly, it is a kind-of hardware problem now that you "killed" the phone with a failed boot loader unlock due to the date code being past 11W29
Thirdly, I have no idea what a "experts repair" (to use your words) will cost. So far no one obviously found a phone repair shop where the technicians had the required brains and tools to unbrick the phone - everyone who hard bricked the phone sent it off to SE.

Whoa?! 11W20 hard bricked?
Anyway, since something seems to have went wrong your only option is to send the phone off to SE for repair.
There is, as I already said, NO way for any home-brew repair left - unless you would already own the required hardware to JTAG the phone (RIFF box + X8 JTAG header or Medusa Box + X8 JTAG header).
Get in touch with your local SE service center and ask them how sending the phone in works (and refrain from telling them about what you did - just tell them "I tried to turn it on in the morning and it won't turn on - dunno what's wrong" *1000W angel halo*)
My friend faces same problem with his phone. He hard bricked it. The phone was other one but the logic is the same.
If you phone is still in warranty. Then they wont charge you. As they cannot know whats inside the phone. Is it rooted, unlocked, custom ROM or anything.
Just go to the shop, with this dead phone, tell them you saw this in the morning and something must have happened during the night (like make something up. Ofcourse a good reason) and before you know they will be agreeing to repair your phone with NO COST!
sigh..
guess its a trip to service center..
had that problem too..

It's easy you just have to make a bridge between two connectors (OMX5 and OMX0) and after you flash a software. If this manipulation can make my phone like a survivor i can do it ^^

Don't worry about that the GS2 has a counter who is incremented when u flash a non official software it's a trick that the constructor used to help the Samsung's technicians to know if you can use the guarantee or not but the GS1 isn't equipped of this system, then it doesn't matter.
so @drakester20 are u saying that i can give it samsung and they wont know and charge mer nothing?

Yeah I might want to sell it but i've seen some motherboard Resurrections using riff box i wonder some one might quote me for that job?
So my phone's not yet fixed since the 25th of December due to sudden death - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2585068
We had it checked again last Thursday, January 3rd. The technician said that the replacement of motherboard is not yet clear to be the best solution as the technicians from the Sony Service Center hadn't opened the phone yet. He said that it might have been a cause of a dead or death boot. Has anyone heard of it? He says not only Sony phones are experiencing this dead or death booth, even other brands. Kind of random. He said that the phone somewhat hangs, the screen isn't on but the system is still running which causes the phone to become warm or hot. And he also said that this lead to the battery getting totally drained. As per him, once the battery is totally drained it won't get charged even if I try to charge the phone for a number of hours. So what he will do when I get back to him on Monday is he will first try to shock the battery to see if it will be revived (which I hope this is just the case) and then dload some firmwares or softwares to fix the unit.
I hope this ordeal will be solved this following week as it's been so inconvenient on my part and I terribly miss my phone.
One of possibility is that they will open the back cover, pull out the battery and charge it to full, then they put it back and flash the stock firmware. With battery charged they have enough time for flashing and the phone should turn on. If it's Sony Center to do that they will also seal the phone as original to get fully working waterproof.

I really, really, really hope it'd work. For the waterproofing it would be fine to take it to the Sony service centre just to have the full waterproofness back.:good:

Hey guys, do the devs a favour: NOT EVERY SIMPLE BOOTLOOP IS A BRICKED DEVICE!!!
Just go to recovery and wipe everything, it then should boot without problems.
if it doesn't, first check yourself (e.g. did you flash a 4.4 kitkat without flashing a new kernel for it?)
the answers for nearly all problems are here on xda-developers ... just read, read and read and understand ... if you don't know, what you do with flashing your device, what the partitions data / cache / system are for, what a kernel is or what the differences between stock roms, custom rom releases and nightly builds is, you simply SHOULD NOT flash your device.
If you understand what you are doing and if THAT ALL doesn't help you and you think you have a problem noone else have (i allready had such a thing with my defy+, it got bootloop and it was a dead memory chip) THEN (and just then) post your problem here. The devs simply don't have the time to help everyone who simply can't read the existing threads.
Thanks (and dont get angry on me, just saying so you can do it better the next time)

Thanks, you just said what I wanted to say.
dear, sorry the English, but I need a help from you.
I made the installation of IMG extracted the KDZ and did flash the recovery, however, now my machine not the sign of life, the computer does not detect the device, the device does not turn on, not of any sign of life. already tried in various corners anything to help me have some solution. I did the procedure based on the stock rom flash D405 with img extracted files. After that the only active device the display if I put to load without the battery, which displays the battery with a question mark. The device does not enter download mode, does not go into recovery, does not display anything, as if completely dead. Does anyone have aware and know any solution to the problem? Note: I've tried the LG flahs tools, it does not detect the device.
You have probably the worst case of them all. I suggest you to take your phone to warranty and see if they can replace it (because there probably isn't any way to fix it). If your warranty is void, then, I'm afraid, you will have to get a new device. I have had this issue myself, and it was solved only by replacing whole internals of the phone. Good thing that I still had my warranty, so it didn't cost anything. Good luck.

but this happened to you because of flash ROMS? How long on average it took for you to get the unit back?

Yes. I tried to flash a ROM (which requires an unlocked bootloader), but for some reason the bootloader wasn't actually unlocked, and flashing a ROM caused the device to be bricked. This is probably what you would call a hard-brick.
In my case, replacement took a little more than a week. But this could differ from country to country.

But in time to take the assistance, you said what about it? The unit stopped working alone?

Exactly. Since the device cannot be turned on, I don't think they have any way of checking if it was rooted or tampered with in any way. So your best bet is to just play dumb and tell them your phone doesn't boot up. That helped me to get it fixed for free.

Legal, tomorrow I will even take the guarantee to solve as fast as possible. Really the device not the sign of life at all. I will inform you that the device was carrying at night and just when I catch him in the morning, he was like that.
Thank you for your help. : D

hard reset does not remove all traces of root. There is RCT checking. u can be sure that have no traces of root when RCT was reset. On kit kat we have chance to reset it without reflashing. But on 5.0 only reflash

Did u flash it from 5.0 or 4.4? This problem may have solve without service center. But if u have warranty, it must not worry u.

Hello, I just want to know that while booting, did your phone show the message "Secure booting error"?
I am getting this message at the LG logo and then device just shuts off.
No, I don't think I ever got this message.
Sent from my LG-D405N using XDA Free mobile app.

In my case, the device did not care and neither carried, gave no sign of life. I sent him for assistance in less than one week they made the repair by warranty.
